'Supernatural' Sam's demon blood detox
Last week, Supernatural took us from bad to worse, leaving us with Castiel possibly becoming a turncoat and Sam being locked up by Bobby and Dean to detox form his demon blood addiction. Could things get worse? Of course!
Sam tries to talk Dean out of keeping him locked up, but Dean sticks to his goods and it's good that he does because not long after Sam begins to hallucinate. First, it's Alastair torturing him, then his younger self asking him why he ruined his life, his mother telling him she's proud of him and to not let her death be for naught and finally Dean, telling him he's a monster and no brother to him. Through all Sam's screaming, Dean and Bobby debate if they are doing the right thing or not.
Since there is no Demon Detox program in existence, Bobby isn't even sure that they aren't killing Sam to save him. Dean, on the other hand, would rather his brother die as a human than live on as a demon. Which sounds a bit cold until you consider that Dean spent a couple decades in hell being tortured by demons. And then he picked up the knife himself. Perhaps what he is really afraid of is that Sam will become what he was while he was in the pit.
Meanwhile, out in the real world, seals are breaking left and right. Dean screams for over 2 hours to get Castiel's attention, but the angel still refuses to tell Dean what he wanted to tell him back in Illinois. Instead, he demands Dean's loyalty and service to god and the angels in order to "spare" Sam. And even that sounds iffy, as Castiel says "If it gives you comfort to see it that way". Not exactly a ringing endorsement. Bobby doesn't think so either, but Dean defends his choice by stating that he would rather trust an angel than let Sam trust a demon.
Speaking of Sam, they have to tie him down as the detox process is flinging him about the room like a rag doll. Which is enough to make Dean want to hunt Ruby down before moving on the Lilith. Unfortunately, he doesn't get the chance as in the middle of the night, Sam's bonds come free, the door pops open and he escapes. And it's all thanks to Castiel. Anna confronts him about letting Sam go free, only to find herself taken into angelic custody as well. Thus it seems there may no longer be any member of the host they can believe in.
But it gets much worse. Dean goes after Sam, tracking him down to a honey moon suite where he nearly gets Ruby until Sam rescues her and she bolts. Sam tells Dean he's not strong enough to take on Lilith and that he knows what he's doing. Dean says that makes it even worse, because then it means that this is what Sam is. And when Sam asks him to clarify, it's his hallucination comes to life when his big brother answers "A monster". The Winchester boys had a knock down, drag out fight, where Sam comes out on top and Dean tells him that if he walks out the door he can never comes back.
And Sam walks.
This can't be the end of the Winchesters, can it? What would you think if we saw Sam defeat Lilith but turn into the full fledged monster Dean fears and must hunt? Dean was taken out of the pit, but is he still looking for redemption? And has Sam given up on such concepts in his search for vengeance?

One of the weaker episodes in an otherwise extraordinary season of Supernatural. This entire Season 4 has been building up to this point and after all the build up, I thought this episode was kind of meh. Maybe that's because the focus was on Sam with Jared P. having a lot of solo screen time. He's a one-dimensional actor, no where near as good as Jensen. So it was kind of boring watching Sam when he was hallucinating.
Here's hoping the finale next week is the real deal and brings some major revelations.
Disagree with the commenter above. I think Jared is a good actor too, but I do agree this wasn't a strong episode. It was pretty good, but not as good as the last 5 episodes have been. I loved the hallucinations since it shows how twisted Sam's mind has become.
Is Anna gone for good? Can we say yes? Things are coming into clear view now. Sam is with the demons and Dean is with the angels. Ruby is definetly manipulating Sam.
Can't wait for the next ep! Did anyone else catch the comment Ruby made about the story where Lucifer twists a human into the first demon? Sounds like what's happening to Sam, maybe this was the YED's plan...
Just because you prefer Jensen's acting over Jared's IggyPop, doesn't mean Jared's a bad actor. Most of this season has focused on Dean so I am fine with this focusing on Sam.
I wish Sam hadn't doubted Dean and left them all behind. I thought Jared didn't a wonderful job with Sam coming down from that demon blood high. His hallucinations of Dean and Mary and his reactions to them were amazing.
I loved seeing Samantha Smith again. I have been avoiding spoilers and had no idea she was going to be on the episode, it was a wonderful surprise.
I'm really confused about Castiel and I'm curious about where he sent Anna. I'm also getting very annoyed with Ruby. I want to know what she's doing once and for all.
I for one thought this episode was quite incredible, even though the ending absolutely broke my heart. I just wish Sam and Dean could go back to being brothers again, but it's looking like it might be a while before they're going to be able to patch things up (I refuse to believe that it is too late).
And is it just me, or do Supernatural fans seem to be fighting more and more the further Sam and Dean are driven apart? It's like there's this incredibly vocal chunk of the fanbase that ***umes we all have to take one side or the other (or favor one brother over the other). Maybe it's just me, but all this bickering that's suddenly going on about who's the better actor, who's had more screen time, who's got a bigger role in saving/destroying the world, etc. seems awfully petty and silly. All the more reason Kripke had better hurry up and patch up the rift between those boys, I suppose.
I personally think that the show started and became popular on the premise of a story about two brothers who fight evil and stick together as a family. To deny either Jared or Jensen's role in making this show as incredibly addictive and awesome as it is is just... well, crazy.
I agree with you Krystal about your take on the brothers, their relationship (sticking together) through thick and thin. I have seen this seperation coming for a long time now and have been dreading it. I am a superfan of this show but I do not like this new direction. I can only hope that this does not last long into the last season. I feel that the show would be much better with the Winchesters fighting it out side by side till the end rather than some big revelation in the last episode of the series.
You know, I'm weirdly worried that Cas may not be getting his orders from God. I don't know... Something seems off there.
And lay off Jared. :) Yes, Jensen is a better actor, but Jared is perfectly acceptable. Even with his overplucked eyebrows.
What I thought when Ruby was talking about the first human Lucifer corrupted, was Eve. Am I remember my Bible School correctly? That Lucifer was a snake and tempted Eve with the apple, yada-yada-yada, right? So that would've been the first human Lucifer tempted into evil. Does that make Lillith Eve? b/c if so, that puts a whole new spin on things.
@ R
When Ruby was talking I thought the same thing. That Ruby is actually in cahoots with Lilith because they needed to turn Sam and he would be the final seal. I still think that may be true but I really don't know. The previews didn't make it seem that way.
I agree with the previous posters who said that the brotherly relationship is the core of the show and should remain the core. I HATE how every year (well, at least the last 2) they make it seem like it will be brother against brother. Just leave the core relationship alone! They can still find plenty of conflict for these two guys without always having them turn against each other or not listen to each other, etc.
I was very disappointed with last night's episode. Of course I hated seeing Sam and Dean fighting, but that wasn't the only problem. It was poorly written and boring. Where were the snappy lines from Dean. Where was the fun! Think of someone tuning in for the first time last night (we do want more people to watch don't we). They would have been totally lost and probably would not watch again. I beg the writers -- please go back and re-watch seasons one and two, and give us back something exciting, entertaining and fun. Let's see the brothers united, with help from Bobby from time to time, fighting evil creatures and monsters. I love to re-watch those episodes. I will never re-watch last night episode.
I grow immune to Jensenfans's attitude. So I will leave them alone.
Awesome Jared's performance. Does sera watched Buffy alot? Some of the lines makes me cringe. Its like poor version of Joss whedon writing, such as " I finally found my line(?)", Big bad wolf in the sea of pig(?), etc.
