Melissarycroft_tonydovolani_dancingwiththestars_290Tonight's cast culling has all the earmarks of predictability. But as Lil' Kim's early exit last week proves, "Dancing with the Stars" isn't always predictable. Though it most likely is this week. Plus it was wonderfully light on filler.

In a bit of a change, Raphael Saadiq opens the show with his very Old School Motown flavored "100-Yard Dash." I love this new vibe from him and Raphael, his band, and quartet of back-up dancers put on a great show. Woo!

After the recap, we get a commercial break and then the encore dance - Shawn Johnson & Mark's Argentine Tango. I dug it just as much tonight as last night.

As is the custom at this stage, we get some past champs - Brooke Burke, Helio Castroneves, and Drew Lachey - to weigh in on the Final Four. I still find Brooke to be bland but I'm sure she's a lovely girl.

Next up, our potential pro finalists will be teaming up with show regulars to choreograph and perform two numbers. Mayo Alanen & Kym are first up with their Tango to the "Addam's Family" Tango piece. Kym's dress is fierce. I really liked his choreography and that it was something that a celeb could conceivably do. It wasn't as fiery as it could've been but that's open to interpretation. Len says it epitomized what he likes about Ballroom, Bruno says he provides a great frame for his partners, and Carrie Ann is impressed by his dynamic yet traditional choreography but wants to see a little more personality in the next number.

Anna Demidova & Maks perform a Quickstep next to "It's Almost Like Being In Love." Fab choreography from Anna - it covered the floor like nobodies business, was high energy, and had a ton of personality. She might win this round. Bruno loved that her technique was "magnificent" and that she performed so well. Carrie Ann agrees, adding that any celeb would be lucky to be her partner. Len says she brought the best out of Maks.

We've past the thrity-minute mark and nary a single result. The "Design A Dance" number is up next, featuring costumes designed by contest winner Rebecca Farmer. It's a Quickstep to "It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" featuring audience selected pros Lacey, Julianne, Mark, and Derek. I'm not surprised by the choices, honestly. Great job on the rip-away costumes, Rebecca. And my, that was a crazy number. In a good way. Lots of energy, lots of personality. Four thumbs up.

Mayo & Kym return with a Cha Cha to "Shake Your Groove Thing" by Peaches and Herb. I scrunch my nose at giving him a Disco song, a classic "DwtS" trap, but I've got to give it up to Mayo for keeping focused and not falling prey to it. It was fun and well choreographed. Carrie Ann thinks his a great dancer but doesn't know if he's versatile character-wise. Len didn't dig this, which I was expecting, but says he's a great choreographer. Bruno agrees and gives the tip to be very careful when to take chances since the judges can be fickle. I'm a little perturbed because it's almost as if the producers wanted to sabotage him by giving him one of the most Disco of Disco Era songs. They might as well have given him "Stayin' Alive."

Immediately following is Anna & Maks with their Samba. I don't know what the song is but it's pretty terrible. At least it's a more legit Samba song. I wasn't feeling this number as much. Sure, it had a lot of personality but I think I was just put off by the crappy cover song. Len says if she's not in next season, he'll "show his bum at the supermarket." Bruno called her a "stunner." Carrie Ann wants to see more of her.

Ok, so after fifty-one-minutes, we get to the results. At least it wasn't all filler like last night. Gilles Marini & Cheryl are the first couple officially in the final followed by Shawn Johnson & Mark. Yay!

Now it's down to just Melissa Rycroft & Tony and Ty Murray & Chelsie, though they're "not necessarily" the Bottom Two. After a some sunshiny, time-killing words from Bruno and Len, it's revealed that Ty & Chelsie have fallen just short of the finals.

After a few parting thoughts from Ty, host Tom Bergeron tells him that it's not always about the steps, but about the total entertainment package. And he and Chelsie were the total package. Their last dance is to "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye."

Yay for Ty but it was time him to go. I'd be happy with either potential pro and kind of hope both of them get on. But I'm fairly sure Anna's the show's favorite. Are you kind of irritated that they gave Mayo a Disco song for his Cha Cha? Excited for the finale? And, a week early, have any wish-lists for next season?

I'm glad I'm not the only one that notices this "Not necessarily in the bottom deal" thing they're randomly inserting in random episodes. Poor Melissa who probably wasn't even in the bottom 2, having to suffer through it just for the sake of drama.

I like Ty, but he's ruined my Best Top 5 Ever and Best Top 4 Ever. At least I'll get my Best Top 3 Ever. :)

This is the first final that I really have no idea who'll win because all 3 are great. So I'm going to wait till all 3 have danced next week to decide who to vote for. Whatever the outcome, I'm happy to have three of my favorite dancers in the whole series getting to dance all three times. :)

Thank god Ty is gone. Should have been gone weeks ago. Go Melissa!

I think the simple fact that he was in the Top 3 unfocused Ty because he has no other excuse for how poorly he danced Monday. I'll miss him but I'm glad to see him go.

Has anyone asked Wil Wheaton if he's interested? I think he'd make a great geek entry next season! :D

yes, thank god Ty's gone. imagine the final 4 had l'il kim been in it.

I think Shawn has an advantage with the freestyle. I can't wait to see her freestyle because she could do things the others can't do. Go Shawn!!!!!

So happy! I really was worried Shawn would go. What a great finale competition this will be! Strongest final 3 since Apolo, Joey and Laila.

The judges definitely favor Anna but I prefered her personality and choreography to Mayos anyway. The best thing about Mayo is his height that would allow for taller female celebs, bit otherwise it's Anna all the way.

Not surprising that the public picked Derek, Julianne, Lacey and Mark. I actually think Derek and Julianne may have won again, but since that might look bad they made it a top two couple routine. Interesting that Julianne and now possibly Derek and Mark are taking next season off. Will that be a nice change or will it hurt the show (since they are so popular)?

Looking forward to next week- so much better than last years top 3!

I agree that Julianne, Derek, and Mark are popular but I think taking the season off is a bad idea. What if they are replaced by even greater and more likeable pros? They may not be as popular if/when they come back.

Disagree. Ty is what show is about. The others are, oh let's see--a professional dancer (Cowboys cheer) with ballet background; a gold medal gymnast (!); and someone who really just loves to dance and does it well.
Personally, I was hoping Shawn got cut. She is a terrible bore and her chunky body wasn't born to dance. Gilles is my favorite, of course, but this show is increasingly about people with very strong physical backgrounds and even dancers overcoming the poor shlubs like Ty who worked his *** off and has more charm than all of the others except possibly Gilles.

and not for nothin' but CHERYL's dancing in her waltz with Gilles was maybe the best dancing I've ever seen from anyone in the number of seasons I've watched this show. Bravo Cheryl.

I have to say, Nadine, I think Shawn's "chunky body" is doing just fine. You notice how she hasn't lost much weight this season? That's because it's all muscle, and she's using those muscles!
