Jessespencer_house_s5_240 I was really looking forward to tonight's episode of House and exploring why Cutthroat Bitch was back, even if just in a hallucinatory sense. Why, then, do I feel a little....discontented?

The POTW is a teenaged wrestler who drops a match when he begins hearing debilitating imaginary explosions. Which is extra interesting, since he's deaf. And he's been deaf since age 4, when he lost it due to complications from childhood meningitis. Which also means he is a good candidate for a cochlear implant, but he decided to remain deaf as it became part of his cultural identity. Which is something House cannot accept and while doing a brain biopsy has Chase put in  an implant anyway. The POTW rips it out less than a day later, causing the arrhythmia in his heart to manifest, proving one of House's theories right. But not right enough. However, we'll get to that later.

Chase and Cameron have decided against a prolonged engagement in favor of getting married in 2 weeks (I smell season finale), so we have a subplot of House taking over the planning of his bachelor party. A task he steams over Cameron and Wilson to get to and they completely let him get away with without so much as a single prank or word of real protest. Which seems disingenuous.

Throughout the differential and the party planning, there is Cutthroat Bitch. Much like the previous hallucinatory alter-ego that helped House discover that Amber was the Jane Doe on the bus, CB spends her time goading him and dropping clues that lead him down paths without him really knowing why until he gets there. But all of this falls more flat than it seems it should. None of the clues have anywhere near the impact of "What's my necklace made out of?" Perhaps because we've seen it done better before or perhaps because we are not emotionally invested enough in the POTW, or perhaps because some of the clues have to do with the name of a stripper House hired for Wilson's last bachelor party. It's Karamel - with a K.

I seem to recall it being mentioned that Karamel was from a party 9 years ago - do strippers stick in the profession that long? That aside, CB thinks House should hire Karamel in order to break up Chase and Cameron on the weak premise that she had a cat and so does Chase and they can bond over that, which leads to cheating and no wedding. And not because House wants Cameron. Just because he doesn't want anyone else to be happy. Which is something that I don't think is inherently true about the character. Sure, House is cynical and misanthropic and doesn't believe in happy-ever-after at all. But him actively working to break up a couple just because he can? He's a jerk, not a sociopath.

Which seems to be exactly what they are implying when House hides in the bathroom at the party until Chase does a body shot off Karamel and promptly goes into anaphylactic shock due to her strawberry body butter. Making House consider the possibility that his subconscious just attempted to murder Chase since he knew about the butter and Chase's allergy. His earlier self-congratulations and lamentations about his team not contributing to his brilliant diagnosis disappears in favor of sleeping pills to get rid of the CB hallucination. The team goes on to properly diagnose and save the patient - as it seems Taub was right all along - and House wakes up...to CB.

Overall there were some great moments, such as House's boom box dance to Public Enemy's Fight The Power and Wilson stumbling about in his boxer shorts. But that was overshadowed by the character inconsistency, such as House's turn as a potential killer, and Wilson and Cameron totally rolling over without a word of argument. What do you think is really going on? Was CB accurate in her original estimation that his guilt over Kutner triggered his guilt over her and that's why she is the hallucination of choice? And why is she there at all if she is not a hallucination due to sleep deprivation? Is all of this just a dream dealing with House's guilt over lost colleagues, his anger over his disability (several mentions made to it this episode), and his ultimate sense of isolation and loneliness as his co-workers all seem to be pairing up in one way or another?

As a Deaf woman, I have to say that I'm REALLY disappointed in the writers. House is supposed to be an unethical a**, I get that...but deciding out of nowhere that the POTW should have cochlear implants and forcing Chase to do the surgery without consent? Waaaay out of line, even for House. I don't think the writers did their research this time and, to Deaf viewers, it showed.

Oh, and the weeks and weeks of adjustment needed for implants were totally ignored. I'm just saying.

Anna I respect you feeling offended for the handling of the Deaf character, but this is how House, as a show, usually handles everything. I'm reminded of when Isaac Hayes left South Park when their lack of respect for ANYTHING, turned to his religion. House treats everyone this way, it didn't offend you until it was someone like you. It also made sense character-wise as House, a disabled character, was angry at the idea of someone choosing a disability in the face of people who give anything (like himself) to freed of theirs.

Anna, if you don't mind, do you recall how long it took you to learn sign language? I am not deaf, but have always had interest in learning signing. I know the alphabet, but not more than 3 or so words. I have a friend who is 70% deaf and reads lips. I don't need sign with her, however, I would still love to learn.

I see ppl say all the time how they think French is a beautiful language or Spanish is a beautiful language. I agree!! But, when I went to a play with my hearing impaired friend, and she had an interpreter do sign for her during it, I was so mesmerized at the mere "beauty" of sign, that my interest in it increased.

I hope you don't mind my asking.

Very interesting show. I agree the Amber hallucination did not have the impact of the show last season, but it was still interesting. As far as Wilson and Cameron not putting up more objections, I don't see that as anything more than lack of time, it is a 60 minute show afterall. I thought the bachelor party was fun. I was happy to see the team come up with the correct answer, House hasn't slept in days and wouldn't be as sharp as usual even though he felt he was smarter - thanks to Amber. That House wanted the boy to hear made sense, but is something he likely wouldn't have done had he not been sleepless for so long. Glad the mother finally took a stand on the implants at the end of the show, something she wouldn't have done without House's action - and the son tearing them out. It will be interesting to see what happens to "Amber".

Can I just say that your headlines are ridiculously spoilerific. If I look at my RSS feed before watching House it gets ruined every time (happened with Kutner too).

JoJo,

I never learned ASL because I was born into a hearing family and was raised in the hearing community. I am oral and I read lips to communicate. But you'll need to take cl***es if you're serious about learning sign. It is a whole language, after all, and more importantly, it's a culture (which Foreman so House-ingly rejected with that comment about earplugs...grr)

Derek,

Your points are well taken, but I can't help feeling that the research into Deaf life wasn't very thorough.

Ah well. They tried. We all know this episode was all about the bachelor party anyway ;)

For some reason, I see the "cochlear implant" storyline played the same way on every show. It's as if the writers go "How could a deaf person POSSIBLY not want to join the cool kids who can hear?". They did it on Scrubs, they did it here. Both times it sucked.

"How could a deaf person POSSIBLY not want to join the cool kids who can hear?"

Indeed. How could he/she?

Sound is amazing. The sound of early morning birds, the majestic orchestra, the sound of children's laughter, all incredible. Why would someone chose not to experience that if he has a choice?!

Living without sound is not impossible. It's just far far less magical.

Deaf culture is just as "magical"

Ever seen someone signing poetry? It's absolutely beautiful.

Besides, the kid didn't try to gouge out House's ear drums, did he? I agree with Anna...it was totally unbelievable that he would force the surgery.

Get a clue, writers!!
