'Hell's Kitchen': Ramsay shutters the restaurant

Giovanni_hellskitchen_s5_240 It was black jacket week tonight on "Hell's Kitchen," and true to form, Ramsay opted to scare a couple of chefs before handing them out. I like that sort of thing -- give out a few heart attacks here and there for no other reason than the fact that you're the boss and people will believe anything you say. Play with the little people, pull the strings. Be the puppet master, it's a good thing.

After giving Ben and Andrea heart palpitations making them think they were going home in a beginning of the show elimination, Ramsay opted to simply hand them black jackets. Personally, I would have liked to see Ramsay send Andrea home instantly. I may have supported her in her spat with Carol, but she's still not my pick to win. I'm happy to announce that my pick (which I've been silent on until now) is Danny. He's my guy, and to this point has never been at risk of elimination, never.

As for Ben, well, he won the challenge tonight. Ben did however badmouth Danny's dish (Danny came in second) to the camera, which really didn't help my opinion of the guy. What do you think? I'm saying that he's become increasingly obnoxious over the past few weeks. Hasn't he?

Giovanni, who seemed awfully lazy during the punishment this week, continued to have issue during dinner service. He was unable to cook Ben's challenge winning chicken. More than once Ramsay sent food back to him and after getting in Giovanni's face sent the poor chef away from the meat station. After Giovanni's performance at the punishment I was pretty convinced he had given up and his actions during service only confirmed it. He even put a hot tray into the fridge. Giovanni knew it was hot but didn't tell anyone else, so when Robert tried to grab it from Giovanni, the big guy ended up badly burned.

Andrea didn't have a particularly good night either. She had some potato problems and then couldn't remember an order even after Ramsay repeated it. She got booted from the kitchen.

Now, while I was all for Ramsay booting individuals willy-nilly during service when that started a few weeks back, it's since become almost de rigueur, and that I'm completely against. It has lost its shock value. Andrea wasn't eliminated during the service -- JP talked her back into the kitchen (have I said lately that I love JP) -- but she seemed pretty close to just walking out the door.

I'm pretty sure dinner service didn't get completed tonight. I never heard Ramsay say "shut it down," but he did walk out of the kitchen before service was over. Paula was named best of the worst, though Danny didn't seem to get in trouble either.

It wasn't hard to guess that Giovanni and Andrea would be nominated, they were certainly the two I would have nominated. It was Giovanni, once the shining light, who lost his jacket tonight.

Oh, that wasn't where the show ended though. It ended with Ramsay calling the chefs downstairs at 2:14 in the morning. He explained that he was upset with the performance of the final six and that he was going to close Hell's Kitchen

. The promos at the end of the episode indicated that he may actually decide to reopen the place. If sarcasm worked well in TV recaps I might say something like "Really? Truly? He might reopen the place? He might be giving them one last chance? I simply can't imagine. I simply can't. Surely he means to close the place forever." But, sarcasm doesn't work well in these sorts of recaps, so I won't.

Questions, questions:

  • As I said above, I'm thinking Giovanni just gave up, I don't know why, but it really looked like he did. What do you think happened there? Did he simply decide he didn't care anymore or did he just have a really, really bad couple of days?
  • What's Ramsay's game? What's the stunt with closing the restaurant? You know he's not going to just end the competition in the middle, I know it, the chefs (I hope) know it. Are they just going to rebrand the restaurant? Is it a ploy to try to get the final five to work harder? What's the deal?

The best comedy on TV!!!

I think he'll bring Gio back because.. he ALWAYS gives reason as to why he booted someone.. and we never saw the "burning image" of Gio tonight. Also, when he called the chefs back in the kitchen at 2AM, he said.. something was wrong.. and mentioned "six" chefs.. when in fact, IF Gio is really gone, would be 5 chefs remaining, not 6. So, I am thinking Gio is not gone. I think he may have felt to give up that night or just had bad couple of days. Also, I am thinking that the "medical emergency" may also be connected to Gio.. where maybe a family member may have been ill and may have been the reason why Gio had been off his game and perhaps things took for worse and Chef said.. the person leaving tonight is for the "right reason"..... In his eyes, the right reason would be to by bedside of your loved one who may be battling last moments..

Anyway, I am a Gio fan and am rooting for him. It was between Danny and Gio always.. but Danny was not a good sport tonight when he did not show genuine happiness for Ben winning.. He was ****ed that Ben did not take him and took Robert instead.. he was not being a good sport.. but he had no problems saying Ben was the worst chef.. so, the way I see it is.. if you don't want someone to mis-treat you, you shouldn't also do the same to them.. While I don't like Ben, I agree with him taking Robert tonight.. and Danny didn't have to be so ****y about it...

We're rooting for Gio still.. cuz.. it ain't over.. 'till the Hell boy sings:).

fanoframsey, you waaaaaay over-thought that.

I think he'll give them a last chance along the lines of "you now have to cook dinner for Rosa's quinceanera. Screw it up and Hell's Kitchen remains closed, you donkeys."

I agree, fanoframsey, did u forget to take ur meds? But, Gio was holding the pan with a towel, big guy should've figured out it was hot. I don't really like any of them left and I don't think I'd hire any of them as a head chef. And did they really need to show the big guys fat rolls when he was in bed. Kind of gross.

glad to see gio gone lazy, and ben should of been gone also. i think it will come down to paula and danny. i like them both. andrea should be gone also. talk talk and more talk from her

The show will definitely continue. If you had listened to chef Ramsey, you would have heard him say that by letting them think Hell's Kitchen was closing, it might give them better incentive to work as a team.

Andrea deserves to win if for no other reason than she has to take all that crap from chef Ramsey week after week.

Danny should be the next one to be kicked out the door. I believe he was the one who got into a shouting match with chef Ramsey, who should have taken his jacket right then and there.

Robert is an overweight whiner who thinks he's better than everyone else - probably including chef Ramsey. It's time for Robert to make his exit.

If Andrea can't win, then my second choice is Ben.

Everybody might do their jobs better if someone put some duct tape over chef Ramsey's foul mouth.

@Jim- Andrea takes crap week after week? No, she screw up week after week. She only takes crap for legitimate reasons, AND LET US NOT FORGET LAST EPISODE Jim, she couldn't even repeat an order, and when Ramsay told her what it was, SHE STILL COULDN'T REPEAT IT. That's twice. She can't even own up to her own mistakes, NEVER ADMITS when she is wrong. SHE EVEN MISCOUNTED THE DELIVERY OF LOBSTER, and she couldn't even say "oh my bad," or "my mistake," or better yet, "I'm sorry you guys had to chace down the truck driver and get him on the cell phone to call his company, only to have him hang up because I recounted and found MY mistake." Week after week my ***. If anyone, Ben takes it up the arse week after week, atleast he can actually whip up a nice dish. I wouldn't put Andrea in my top 5. I will agree with you though, in that Robert should go; he is arrogant in that he thinks he is actually a chef. Danny is winner. Maybe Paula is runner-up.

@fanoframsey- Not sure if you've noticed, but Ben is is just as arrogant as Robert. He talks a load of mess, and a lot of it. Danny saying he was the worst chef WAS NOT AN INSULT, at some point on the show you will be asked that, and he had two people to pick from. I don't know if you've noticed, but Ben has a whole bunch of insulting remarks, where-as Danny is mostly quiet and reserved, not to mention, CONSISTANT IN THE KITCHEN. What planet are you on? Does anybody here watch the show? or do you guys pick a couple bad episodes and form your opinion on that? Bring some logic or don't bring it at all.

I agree with fanoframsey 100%. I have hot missed an episode over the last 3 years and Ben likes to act like he is the end all be all of chefs. He is an idiot trying to make himself look good. Danny does actually look like he knows what he is doing all the time. I haven't seen Danny in harms way at all. Robert is just a shadow of whoever is doing well and gets yelled at because he is very slow. Andrea is worthless as well. She can't remember the orders or cook garnish. I could do that for crying out loud. Gio CAN'T cook meat or chicken. He just can't. Enough said about Gio. Paula is the only other strong chef left and I think either one of them would do well to win. IMO.

Thomas, I think you mean you agree with "The thing is" not fanoframsey.

Face it Ben & Robert are loud mouthed jerks, I am tired of watching them, I am sick of Andrea and wished JP would have let her continue walking.

My vote is for Danny.

I would like to know how these people made it on this show to begin with. I still can't forget Lacy crying "I can't cook meat chef!" WThe? Or that they couldn't tell the difference between Chicken, Pork and Beef (except for Danny). My kids can do that! My vote is for Danny. The guy has alot of energy and seems to be quite resilient. Paula only seems to be able to make good Risotto, Andrea is overated and useless as is Ben. Robert doesn't seem to take any pride in himself - he often appears as if he needs to sit and rest. Not to sound cruel but he needs to be addressing his obesity problem before doing anything else for his own good. The dude makes me nervous just looking at him. Is that why the ambulance comes tonite? They should bring LA back and boot Andrea she's all talk and no action.
