'Supernatural' I love you - Ditto.
Let it not be said that "Supernatural" doesn't know how to follow up a hiatus with a healthy reminder about how much you love this show. Because you do. Just admit it. It's unholy and your as hell bound as Dean.
The boys get a lead from Bobby that no one has died in a small town in over a week, despite terminal cancer cases and one man having been shot through the heart (he's insane and he gives love a bad name). And if "Dead Like Me" taught us nothing else, it's that unreaped souls are not a good thing at all. Dean is reluctant to check it out but Sam is relentless. However, when Alastair shows up Dean is more easily convinced there's a case here. At least, he could have been if he were not unconscious from Alastair flinging his aside like a rag doll. A trick he tried with Sam as well and found himself unable. And exorcised.
Bobby, having done some digging, informs them that the reaper has been kidnapped by demons who are planning to kill him under the solstice moon the next night. Breaking another seal. Faced with the challenge of how to see a reaper, they enlist a disinclined Pamela to send them on an astral journey. On the way they meet up with Tessa - the reaper who tried to collect Dean after the accident with their dad. They also meet Cole, the last person to actually die in the town who is also a 12 year old ghostie Yoda. Or, the role of Stephen Wright from the movie "Ghost", but instead of teaching Patrick Swayze to push a penny, he teaches the boys to kick incorporeal ass.
The demons get ahold of Tessa too and when Dean and Sam get to the location of their ritual, they find the building covered in inscriptions invisible to living eyes. They try out their fancy ghost-fu on a demon but end up getting caught in a trap set by Alastair, who traps them with iron chains and then demonstrates how much rock salt loaded shotguns suck. Meanwhile, Pamela finds herself fighting a demon of her own.
Dean and Sam use their spectral telekinesis to crash a chandelier into the binding inscription, freeing Tessa before Alastair can kill her, allowing her to free them of the iron chains just in time for Pamela to wake Sam the instant before she gets stabbed in the gut. Of course, with no reaper operating just yet, she's got some time. For whiskey. At least, thats what I am imagining she was drinking. She doesn't seem like the Malibu Rum type.
Dean is looking for Sam when he runs into Alastair instead, but their confrontation is short lived when lightening strikes Alastair's head and Castiel shows up. That's some good smiting! Dean is less impressed, though he's mollified when Castiel tells him the inscriptions on the building were there to keep angels out. Dean asks him to spare the unreaped people in the town, but we all know it doesn't work like that. However, Tessa asks him to go with her to reap Cole and the scene is actually pretty comforting. At least, it was until she reveals that there is no happy ending for Dean at the end of his service to the angels. And then reaps Pamela.
The Funny:
www.flooredbytheLord.com. Comedy gold!
Dean: I think I have a concussion.
Sam: You want an asprin?
Dean: No thanks, "House".
Sam: Pamela, you are a sight for sore eyes.
Pamela: That's sweet Grumpy. What do you say to deaf people?
Dean: (with his ghost hand in Sam's chest) Am I making you uncomfortable?
Sam: Get out of me.
Dean: Such a prude.
The episode ended on quite the down note. Not only with the revelation that Dean can't count on redemption through good works like John Constantine, but also with Pamela telling Sam that the darkness within him does not equate the good intentions he thinks he has when he exorcises demons. Given what we've seen of the angels and their questionable tactics, is it possible that there really is no "better place" in the "Supernatural" world? Do you think there's any chance we can see the return of Pamela in another form? And what about Sam lying to the kid? Is his ability to do wrong exceeding his humanity? How much darker will it get before we see whatever light there is?

I have missed our boys.
Oh, Tessa. You are so cynical. But I love you anyway.
And, Pamela. Our boys have brought you nothing but pain and suffering. Thanks for telling Sam what he needed to hear before you left us. I will miss you.
And, Alexander Gould (aka Shane Botwin on Weeds) was our little Yoda.
I can't wait until next week's episode!
I not only missed the boys but I also missed our pretty angel, whom we haven't seen since NOVEMBER (4 months!).
I too thought the episode, while probably one of the better episodes since the winter break, was a total downer. Pamela died and Tessa bascially took away any sign of hopes and sunshine. Really left me with a bad taste.
Another great one:
"Who's Mr. Miyagi?"
First new episode in 2 months and our local affiliate (Memphis) decides they'd rather air baskeball games.
Guess I'll have to look for it on HULU.
Man - I missed hearing '****s' on television while Supernatural was on break.
I didn't think the ep was a downer, but it was dark. When Sam was lying to that kid - man I just had a lump in my throat.
Loved the kid teaching them the ghost-fu though.
'having been shot through the heart (he's insane and he gives love a bad name)' Good one Jessica !
Was caught by surprise when Castiel admits to Dean that Bobby was not the one who called afterall. Loved Castiel explaining that the reason for the subterfuge is that whatever they ask of Dean he does the opposite.
Ya know, I KNEW this was on last night, but noooo, we got preempted for a stupid basketball game! This sucks!
Great episode. I was psyched to see Pamela & Castiel again. It's too bad that we won't see more of her, she was pretty awesome. Also I love the Dead Like Me reference in the recap. That was another great show.
First off, I am glad that Supernatural is finally back on the air! : - ) Next, this episode was absolutely amazing with the return of not only Castiel but Alastair too! I must say that Sam is getting darker and darker each episode and my bet is he will probably be completely evil by the season finale. I must say I'm not where Dean will be by the season's finale. Will he turn into an angel or maybe even into a fallen angel? Nevertheless, I can't wait to find out during the rest of this season!
When Pamela died all I could think was of course she has to die everybody that the boys have in their lives either die or disappear unless they're like Meg or Tessa. More bad news and distrust between the brother's just makes me sad. Why can't they catch a break. I wish things weren't so hard for them, but I guess that would mean no conflict and that would be a bad thing on a drama series.
thank you Kripke! For giving us the first Castiel scene of 2009!!!!!!
