'Scrubs': A preview of next season?
As we've all heard, it's up in the air whether "Scrubs" will return for another season. Tonight, we got a preview of what that season might look like - a vision of Sacred Heart through the eyes of the interns. And I gotta say, though it was a bit scattered, it was far from terrible.
JD is being treated with a "newfound sense of respect" thanks to his role as the guy who gets Dr. Cox to say, well..."no," most of the time. But, um, at least he asks? Turk is perhaps a little jealous (or, more likely, irritated by JD's newly huge head - what kind of person actually takes a comparison between themselves and Martin Luther King, Jr. as anything BUT sarcasm?), but they don't really take it too far.
Most of the focus tonight is on the interns - as it's a "Their Story" episode, we hear their thoughts and, more hilariously, see their fantasies instead of JD's. Denise's story was the highlight for me. I love her character in the first place, especially now that they've toned down the unfeelingness towards patients, but hearing her bitingly sarcastic thoughts made me feel especially good about the prospect of a "Scrubs: The New Class" scenario next year. Denise convinces Elliot to do a biopsy on a patient that wasn't necessary in the end, and her fantasy version of Elliot's venerable "I Told You So" dance - spiced up with French AND the splits - was probably the high point of my day. And though it is better in Denise's head, I'm glad to see that Elliot jazzed up the real version with The Robot.
So I totally love Sunny. At first I wasn't sure - she seemed annoyingly, relentlessly happy. And while this is still true, she's grown on me. And thus, shame on the Janitor for crushing that (albeit temporarily) by calling her weak. Shaaame! Also shame on the totally weak payoff for the "hypnotized by the word 'popsicle'" prank. I think we both know you could've done better than that, buddy. My forgiveness can be bought for the price of one motorized supply cart. But only if it brings me iced tea, too.
As a bonus, tonight we were introduced to Derek, a new surgical intern. He spends most of his first day getting between JD and Turk, biting his tongue while thinking of cutting remarks, and being generally a little boring. But I found myself cheering for him when he finally snapped, speaking truth to power and shaking things up, Jordan-style. Turk receives the worst of it, getting called a "giant bald seven-year-old who's obsessed with his best friend." Yeah, that's pretty spot-on. But hey, that's why we love him! And Derek is now a member of the Sacred Heart family...perhaps an important one come next year's hypothetical ninth season.

scrubs has been one of my absolute favorite shows from the beginning and while I fear what may happen if they drag it out for a ninth season...i have hope. After a lackluster 6th and 7th season, the show has certainly been revived this year and I have to believe that the writers could keep up this quality in a ninth season. As for the new faces, I've been pretty happy with the outcome so far. Denise is ridiculously hilarious and I would love to see another season or two of her alone.
I've always liked Sonny's character, and Denise has grown on me. I thought Derek's introduction was mishandled, but I'm interested in seeing where they're going to take him. I'm a little bummed how much Katie's character has devolved, but the aforementioned trio would be better replacements for JD et al.
I've been in the spin-off camp over the continuation idea, but I would only be on board if Dr. Cox was the central character, and since that's not going to happen, I'm weary of a 9th season. I'll still watch it, but it'd be out of habit more than anything.
It just wouldn't be Scrubs without JD, Cox, Turk, and Janitor...
I would second that opionion. While it was an awesome episode that I laughed through, most of the interns machinations were based off stuff related to the main characters. Without these mains I don't think the interns could survive on their own and it would seem hard to intrduce a bunch of new mentor characters to these guys without having acomparison to their interaction with the current ones, which has been excellent. I'd give it a watch though, because i do like the characters.
Lastly, did I imagine it or did JD call Denise "Angry Bear".
If most of the main players plus the new interns were back I would watch
I thought it had already been confirmed that this would be the last season of Scrubs?
I just wonder about Zach Braff and Bill Lawrence. They spent eight years complaining about the lack of network support. 'Scrubs' finally gets a network that wants it and supports it...and Braff and Lawrence abandon the show. I think it's an insult to all of the fans who stayed with the show for all these years.
I would watch a 9th season but If it does go to a 9th season then they have to go with a spin-off and not countinue under the Scrubs name!!
I thought this episode was better than most, although the Famous Jett Jackson not getting any flack for ripping on the old-timers seemed a little odd. I don't support a 9th season, but would possibly watch if JD loses the half-beard.
Just to clarify: I meant better than most of the past two or three seasons.
