Balthazargetty_brothersandsisters_240 For a few minutes there on "Brothers & Sisters", it looked like Tommy Walker was turning into a responsible adult and a decent human being. Hah! Plus, Ryan continues to get his creep on, Kitty suffers new-mother syndrome, Robert is oblivious and Kevin gets more action than anyone.

The Walker boys go down Mexico way for some peace and quiet and sense-talking. Alas, they neglected to look at their calendar. "It's Spring Break, bitches!" one of the drunken co-eds yodels at them. Oh, joy. Of course Tommy thinks this is kismet -- after all, they came down here to help Justin get over Rebecca, right? Well, no -- that's just the excuse Kevin and Justin used to get Tommy to go with them, because god forbid Tommy would consent to doing anything related to impending felony charge. Le sigh.

After much screeching and drunkenness and a visit from the Shot Hottie, Justin loses it -- yes, I am completely broken up over Rebecca, and it's all your fault, Tommy! We're fighting because of your stupidity! Kevin finally admits that they came down to Baja so he could broach the idea of Tommy taking the plea -- I mean, you are guilty, and if you goes to trial, it will probably turn out badly. Tommy is pissed.

It takes Justin getting menaced by an entire drunken fraternity to make Tommy see the light -- you guys are right, I screwed up, let me take steps to fix it. Then he waxes rhapsodic about the state of grace of the drunken college students surrounding them. They haven't had time to screw up yet! What if we could just start over, have a clean slate? Which is why there's no way Justin and Kevin should have been surprised when they discover that Tommy has fled -- sure, it sounded like he said he was taking the plea, but what he really said was "I'm taking the see... as in see-ya!" Ah, Tommy. You were doing so well for a few minutes there!

Calistaflockhart_brothersandsisters_240 Meanwhile, Kitty is dealing with both an infant and a big baby. Robert isn't taking his recuperation well, and he flatly rejects the idea of taking medication to deal with post-heart-attack depression. Kitty is too damn tired to argue with him -- and I know Robert is recuperating from a heart attack, but does that mean he's not physically capable of folding laundry?

Kitty ends up popping Evan in the car and driving out to Nora's -- ostensibly to meet Ryan, but in fact because she's at her wits' end. She puts on a brave face for a while, and even perks up a bit when she starts arguing politics with Ryan, but she eventually admits that she's exhausted and overwhelmed and misses having adult conversations and wonders if she'll ever get the chance to shower again. Nora FINALLY goes into nurturing mode and sends Kitty to bed. Sarah warns Robert that it looks like Kitty is giving up. When she fights, it means she cares. When she doesn't... well, that's not good. And indeed, when Kitty gets back the next day, she can't be bothered to argue with Robert. Uh-oh.

Finally, creepy Ryan creepily creeps around Rebecca. She asks if he's got a thing for her, and he denies it. After the political argument with Kitty brings up family values and a mother's love, Ryan goes back to Rebecca's and confesses that he thinks his mom killed herself, and that William Walker was somehow to blame. Dun dun DUN!

The Walker Family Annoyance Index

Tommy:
  • Trying to deflect the blame for his felonious activity onto Holly again, saying she got her share in the company through fraud. As far as I know, lying to the cheating husband who's bedding you about the parentage of your child isn't illegal. Not nice, but not illegal: 1
  • Abusing Sarah's hospitality by hogging the upstairs bathroom, stealing the phone and using questionable language in front of the kids: 1
  • Laughing out loud when he hears Justin's med-school plans: 1
  • Being pissed that Kevin advises him to take the plea:  1
  • Whining that the family always goes to bat for Justin, but never tries to help him. Grrr: 1
  • Admitting he broke the law, and saying he's going to have to take responsibility for that: -1
  • Admitting that following in William's footsteps had gotten him into trouble: -1
  • Agreeing to take the plea: -1
  • Wimping out, fleeing in the night, and leaving a note for his family saying "don't hate me. Too late!: Approximately a billion
Annoyance Factor A billion, give or take.

Ryan:
  • Being WAY too familiar with Rebecca -- you don't know her well enough to try to jolly her out of a post-breakup wallow, young man!: 1
  • Lying like a rug that he wasn't hitting on Rebecca: 1
  • Arguing politics with Kitty: 1 for gall, -1 for effectiveness. Did he know it's what she needed or was he being a punk kid?
Annoyance factor: 2. Creep factor: Umptillion

Sarah
  • Appearing on Kevin and Scotty's doorstep and pounding until they were forced to answer: 1
  • Asking Kitty why she didn't ask for help. New mothers don't  have to ask!: 10
  • Going to Robert to tell him that Kitty is having trouble:  -1
  • Admitting that she's about to overstep and stick her nose in when it's none of her business -- and then doing it anyway, because it needed to be done:  -1
Annoyance factor: 9

Kevin
  • Being supportive of Justin's plans for med school: -1
  • Promising he won't say anything abut med school, and then immediately telling Tommy: 1
Annoyance factor: 0

Justin
  • Saying "you promise not to say anything...." to a fellow Walker. Dude, when has that ever worked?:  1
  • Getting his act together and finishing his essay: -1
Annoyance factor: 0

Robert
  • Being so pissed off about his own recovery that he can't see what taking care of him and the baby is doing to Kitty: 1
  • Denying that anything could possibly wrong between him and Kitty when Sarah came to him: 1
Annoyance factor: 2. I'd normally give him a pass because he's dealing with his own illness, but in this case, my sympathies lie with the frazzled mother.

Nora:
  • Trying to be more-hands off towards her kids: -1
  • This statement: "When your son is charged with embezzling from the family business, it does make you pause and rethink your parenting strategy." -1 Remarking that Kitty "usually looks better.": 1
  • Being hands-off to Kitty, who is OBVIOUSLY struggling with a new kid and a sick husband, and come on, Nora, you had kids, you know what it's like!: 10
Annoyance factor: 9

Tommy Walker wins, off course, but Sarah and Nora are a close second. Look, Sarah and Nora have both have had kids. They know how strung out and insane and exhausted you are when you've got an infant in the house. No way should they have been telling Kitty that she needs to ask for help. When there's an infant involved, you just assume that the mom needs help until she tells you to go away -- and you don't get offended by anything until about the third month, or until the parents have had at least four consecutive hours a sleep for at least three nights in a row. It's the law.

(And lest anyone cry sexism, hell yeah, I think the guys should have been just as involved. However, since they were sent to Mexico, I'm forced to let it slide. Next week, I expect to see them changing diapers!)

I am going to argue with you about Nora and Sarah. Kitty should have asked for help. It is not Nora and Sarah's child. Many new moms don't want help because they see that as being a bad mom. If Kitty really wanted help she would have called Nora and asked her to babysit so that Kitty could sleep. And yes I am a woman.

Hey, T -- but that's my point. New moms often don't ask for help because they DO think it will reflect badly on them, but they're in the grip of hormonal fluctuations and exhaustion and god knows what else, so it's up to the people around them to at least offer, and not ***ume they'll be asked.

But this is a thing with me -- It's just what you do, you know? Your mileage may vary.

I ahve ti disgare with you about asking for help. This is Kitty we are talking about. She would deny help before asking. By them waiting for her to kinda reach out and them helping what just what needed to happen. If it was the other way around we would added that to The Walker Family Annoyance Index (btw I LOVE).

As we all know, Kitty is too strong willed to ask for help, and they probably didn't want to get b'd at for asking if she WANTED help....

How about the brothers lack of concern for Justin being at Spring Break...

Yes, Ryan = CREEPY!

And on top of her contrary nature about help can't kitty afford a nanny, or a maid or someone to provide some minimal basic help.

I mean she didn't even ask(okay tell) Robert 'here's the baby I'll see you after my shower and see if I can take a nap.) If he's so hot to be active...

Also, given we've explicitly called Kitty on her p***ive aggressiveness are we going to continue to sympathize with her martyrdom? Lay down the law on Robert's less sensitive issues. Duh

i agree that kitty could do more however new mothers seem to get baby-brain. i do hope that the writers do not go down the road of a split between kitty and robert; make them fix it and be stronger. and, really, did the boys need a bonding session or just some more work in their lives vs. adding to their older sisters workload!

Like I said last week, B&S cannot have another failed sibling marriage!
-How many times do we have to see Rebeca open the door to find Ryan standing there?
-I feel like I have no interest in Ryan's storyline - its too soon to have him get such a big storyline- the audience isn't invested in him yet. Show us more of how Julia is coping with Tommy instead.

This show sucks. I can't believe shows like Pushing Daisies and Eli Stone get canceled, and dreck like this stays on the air. Those clowns in suits at ABC really have their heads up their collective @$$e$.

Sarah - what hormonal fluctuations would Kitty be having considering she adopted the kid? I'm so sick of her character acting as if she gave birth to the damn thing herself. Yuck!

To Soul Reaper: ABC isn't public television: they're a commercial enterprise. B & S does well in the ratings, Eli and Daisies weren't. the former means renewal, the latter cancellation.
