'The Secret Life of the American Teenager': Ricky's secret, yet incredibly obvious, plan
I foresee a future for The Secret Life of the American Teenager where, if things continue apace, there ought to be four or five rugrats running around the place by the end of season three. I firmly don't believe that any of the teens have learned anything from what's going on around them. Why should they, after all, let's face it, the show is almost entirely populated by crazy people.
Right off the bat tonight, Ricky declared his love of Amy to Doc Fields. What?!? Since when? Have you seen anything that indicates that Ricky loves Amy? I know I haven't. Ricky figured that maybe that's why he got Amy pregnant -- because he loves her. He then said that he was going to pretend like he was okay with the adoption for a few weeks before pulling the rug out from everyone. I don't know about you, but that's totally how I show love -- I lie to those I care for about the most important things in my life. Yeah, I wasn't buying what Ricky was selling and I hope you weren't either.
Fortunately, Ricky wasn't quite as slick as he thought. Anne knew exactly what Ricky was planning, and Doc Fields confirmed it for her. Even Donovan and Leon knew Ricky wasn't going to accept the adoption. For that reason and several others they opted to pull out of the whole thing.
Amy was feeling distressed that Ben didn't want to talk to her (Ben did, but he was upset about the Ricky situation). I hope it was simply out of despair, but Amy suggested to her mom that perhaps she would be better with Ricky than Ben. She also told her dad that she was pretty sure that Ricky liked her and that it was hard not to like someone back who liked you. I think I may have to start an online petition to prevent that relationship from happening. On the upside, by the end of the episode, Ben had declared his love to Amy once again, and while angry, Amy told him that she loved him. I'm not sure any of these kids will stay together, but it does seem like those two have the best shot.
I really do like how George has stepped up to the plate recently. He may not deal with everything in the best way, but I think he's quietly become the smartest guy on the show. He recognized that Amy's wedding to Ben was real, at least emotionally. Also, he explained to her that she ought not marry Ricky just because she only wanted to sleep with one guy in her whole life. Plus, he knew when he saw Ashley with a cigarette in her hand that there was no way she was smoking. That George has it going on.
Speaking of sex, and really that's what this show is all about, Grace was handed birth control pills by her mom tonight. Later she even told her mom about all the things she was thinking about sex (there was talk of nakedness and sweatiness). That family definitely doesn't teach abstinence only. They teach it as the best policy, but not the only one. Grace didn't plan on taking the pills she said, but she wanted to keep them. She also wanted to start seeing Ricky again, if Ricky wanted to see her.
Predictably -- and awesomely -- Adrian was not happy with that last bit of news. Upon hearing it, she instantly declared that she was going to go home that night, make out with her brother, and then invite Ricky over to have sex.
I wonder when Adrian will hit upon the idea of being with both guys at once. I'm convinced she's headed there, after all, when her brother showed up tonight she told him that she thought when he asked her to go to dinner and a movie that it was code for him wanting to come over to her place and have sex with her. A threesome with Ricky and her brother can't be that far from her mind. Of course, had she known that Grace decided that she really didn't want to see Ricky (Grace didn't answer a call from him that night), Adrian probably would no longer have been interested, although after her date with her brother she may not have been interested anyway.
Crazy people I tell you, crazy people.
And, my question to you -- how long before Grace pops those pills? I'm saying she doesn't wait too long to pop them even if she continues to debate abstinence.

I don't want Amy with Ricky but I don't want Amy with Ben. I can't stand Ben, if I could go on the show and kill one person off, it would be Ben.
I think Ricky is probably best suited with Grace. With Adrian, she really does not want a relationship, and she only seems to want a guy if there is competition or if it is forbidden.
I like that they are using Adrian and Ricky to show to people that often sex and love are confused. Adrian doesn't know how to have a relationship that does not revolve around sex. Hopefully, they can use her to demonstrate to teens the concept of sex plus love is the only way.
My personal opinion is that Ricky should be with whom ever he really loves. And as for Amy she needs to make the best decision and that needs to be made upon her and the child she is carrying. I have to agree with T though the first person I would kill off would be Ben. As for Adrian can anybody say HO?? She deffinitley dont know what love and a relationship is thats not based upon sex and cheating. As for Gracie she has got issues to and I dont think she would be good with Ricky either. As for Ricky's real father he is STRANGE and PSYCHO!! He needs to be a father to Ricky and not be such a jerk. And as for Amy's parents why would they slit up? That is going to make one hell of an impact on Amy and her sisters life. And the baby to come. I think Amy should keep the baby no matter what anybody tells her. And I am sure she wont have any regrets about it in the long run!! Thats That..............
This show is such a hot mess that it's impossible to predict what might happen. It irks me to no end that Amy is trying to do the right thing (recognizing that she's not ready to be a parent and find a suitable adoptive couple) and yet her parents sit idly by while she gets railroaded into keeping and raising the baby by two 15 year old boys who are putting their own interests first and who will ultimately grow up and go away, leaving Amy to raise the baby alone. Or at least, that's what would happen in the world everyone but Brenda lives in.
I can only hope that teens are smart enough to see through this tripe and recognize that this show is a handbook for what NOT to do if you find yourself 15 and pregnant.
Ah well, I agree that George is the smartest one on the show. Ben's father is pretty cool too.
I find it interesting that Amy is (and has always), acted like a tramp to Ben. He is finally seeing that she is and always was indifferent to their relationship. I know that Ben is a putz, but even a putz can only take so much disrespect from his so-called girlfriend.
Adrian? How can you not feel sorry for her? Especially after her first real date?
She actually cares for Ricky in her damaged way. Remember the way she responded to Ricky's confession?
Ricky? Well, he is messed-up by his father. At some point, he will have to choose for himself. Be a permanent victim, and blame everyone else for your problems, or grow up and take responsibility for himself.
I personally hope to see Adrian and Ben get together. She needs some loyalty and love, and he definitely needs some fire in his life.
Every time I see Amy I have this feeling that she is channeling Dexter, the serial killer.
I just hope Ashley is not around when Amy shows her true colors.
JOSH: I agree that these characters are C-R-A-Z-Y! I think that's part of the reason why this show falls into the so bad, it's good category. I can't believe this show consistently gets higher ratings than Gossip Girl (which has some iffy writing, too, but at least the acting is good and the clothes are pretty). :-0
I could tell right away that someone other than Brenda Hampton had written this episode. Brenda's episodes tend to focus solely on underage characters wanting to get married right away (just like the characters on her previous show, 7th Heaven).
I liked this episode much better, since some people were actually talking rationally, like Leon, Donovan, Anne, George and the therapist. I could live with a spin-off featuring only Leon and Donovan, their foster kids and Ashley could come and babysit for them! ;-)
I hate how the characters are written so schizophrenically. Onw week Amy says that she's in love with Ben, now she says she should marry Ricky because she should have sex with only one perosn for the rest of her life! WTF????? One week Ricky is like, I don't have time for a baby, since that would interfere with my sex life with different girls. Now he's like, I need to be in both the baby and Amy's life, and Ben has no business dating her?
Please, I'm not expecting Shakespeare from this show, but the writers can't seem to make up their minds about any of the characters. I would say the most consistently written charcters have been Jack and Ashley. And one more note, I think there are too many secondary and tertiary characters on this show already! Did they really need to give Jack an older girlfriend and her kid brother??? :-(
If every time a character on this show says the words "have sex," we drank a shot, we'd all be drunk on our rear ends by the time the show ends. Has anyone else noticed how many times that phrase is used in every episode??
ben's dad is the coolest, but ben himself just drives me crazy, he needs to man up and stop being such a pansy
personally, i just love how the title makes it seem like the show shows the life of the normal american teenager, i don't know about you guys, but i don't sleep with my brother
this show is great. How often as teens did we make up our mind only to do a 180 moments later? I totally agree that this show should be a "what not to do" rather than "everything will work out just fine". I'm sorry. It if my 15 year old got pregnant, adoption all the way unless I plan on raising the baby myself.
