Karelixalicea_flykhicks_abdc_s3_240 On this, the penultimate episode of Randy Jackson Presents: America's Best Dance Crew, our final three crews will be whittled down to the final two. And, even though my DVR made me miss the first showing, it didn't stop me from enjoying this throwdown.

Fly Khicks, Quest Crew (aka "the last men standing"), and Beat Freaks all wait onstage while host Mario Lopez fills the time by running down last week's judges' comments. The crew that is safe is guaranteed a spot in the finale and that crew is...Beat Freaks. I can't say I'm surprised - I figured it'd be them or Quest.

First, Layla Kayleigh runs down the challenge, dubbed "The Hip Hop Decathlon." With the help of a member of some of the past two season's crews, we get demonstrations of the styles our groups must tackle utilizing the same sets of tracks: Mike from Kaba Modern (tutting), Taeko from Fysh n Chicks (housing - do people still do this?), Frost from Supreme Soul (krumping), Ronnie from Supercr3w (threading), and K.B. from Jabbawockeez (waving).

1. Beat Freaks
The energy wasn't as high at the beginning of the number as it was at the end. Overall it was strong - they go from waving to housing to threading to tutting and wrap it up with the krumping. I dug the krumping. They were most worried about that part in the rehearsal package but it came off great.
Judges: Shane loved the tutting totem poles and slow-moes Maryss' housing solo. He's proud they came with it tonight. JC thought the krumping section was their strongest and dug the attitude they brought. Lil' Mama said it wasn't their best performance but they worked it out. She agrees the krumping was the strongest part.

The Bottom Two:
As usual, the coin-toss determines the performance order of chopping block crews.

Brianhirano_questcrew_abdc_s3_240 1. Quest Crew
Their order is threading, tutting, waving, housing, and ending with krumping. Wow. They weren't playing around this week. I dug the whole routine from top to bottom - the transitions were strong and the balance of humor and straight-up dancing was perfect. They got a reimbursement for the lunch money the Beat Freaks took during Magic Week. And they got a standing ovation from everyone including the judges.
Judges: Lil' Mama could tell how much they want the title and says they dominated the tasks. She slo-moes the tutting section, which was very cool. Shane slo-moes Steve's indian-style sit into a no-hands backflip and Dom's elbow windmills. He also slo-moes Hirano ripping off his shirt (thank you, no really) because he didn't expect him to be buff. Obviously Shane thought it was sick. JC thought it was amazing from beginning to end and calls Hok "King Tut" since he came up with that section and revisits Steve's sick flip.

2. Fly Khicks
The Teflon Dawns find themselves in the bottom once again...however, the ladies aren't as experienced in these specific styles. They were having the most problems with threading during rehearsal. Their order is housing, threading, waving, tutting, and, like everyone else, ending with the krumping. The threading and tutting sections lost some momentum, possibly because they needed to have multiple height levels or two sets of choreography going on at the time. The Khicks did admirably considering they only had two days to learn foreign, highly skilled maneuvers. Following Quest's fab routine didn't help. Quest rummaged through their mini-fridge and all that was left was an apple with a bite taken out of it.
Judges: JC slo-moes how three of the girls did one-handed back-handsprings at the top of the routine. He thinks using their shoes on their hands during the tutting section may have slowed them down a bit but give Karelix and Tracy props for having great charisma and energy today. Lil' Mama likes the imagination they showed and slo-moes Wendy doing her flip at the end while the girls throw their sneakers up in the air. Shane agrees and gives the tip that when you're tutting to slow music, you have to do it at double-time. And, Shane being Shane, slo-moes the Booty Pops.

After a commercial break, Quest Crew and Fly Khicks stand onstage enduring Mario's reiteration of stuff we just heard to create false tension. The inevitable result is that Quest Crew is safe and gets to perform their second number.

Fly Khicks are a great crew and I respect what they've accomplished on the show. They take the announcement well and didn't seem too surprised. There are some tears from the ladies as the farewell package plays. Tracy throws in a little caterpillar for good measure as their banner falls and they walk it out.

But wait! There's more show! For this last challenge, the Beat Freaks and Quest Crew get to make their own music (with the help of producing duo District 78) for a boundary-free final routine.

Mariecourchinoux_beatfreaks_abdc_s3_240 2. Beat Freaks
They create an electo-beat heavy tune they entitled "Freak the Dream." They have a giant hand-drawn boombox on stage where all but one of the Freaks emerge from after a brief solo. I liked it - it very much represented who they were, straight up B-Girls. They didn't throw a lot of tricks but the number featured everyone and showed a lot of personality. Honestly, I wish it were longer.

3. Quest Crew
Since Ryan plays piano, he provided the melody to the song they've entitled "OrQuestra." They're going to do their best to include that in the number. And include it they did. They did a lot of tricks on top of that piano. Ryan actually plays it while Dom spins on top of it. And at the end, Steve does a flip and, in mid-air, gets pushed over the backs of two of his bent-over crew members. Sick and wrong.

Judges' Final Thoughts: Shane thanks the Beat Freaks for coming on the show and helping "change the game" of dancing. Lil' Mama says Quest is inspirational and that, if Dom was a chick, his name should be "Charisma." JC says that the two best crews are in the finale. He says that you're only as good as your weakest link and he sees no weakness on stage.

Assorted Bits & Pieces:

  • Wow. Quest certainly made this hard today. They really stepped their game up and good for them because, if they didn't, it'd be an easy call that Beat Freaks would've won. It could totally go either way right now and, no matter how it turns out, I'll be happy and sad at the same time.
  • Let's take a moment to compare and contrast the two. They both have a similar core skill set but Quest is more about power moves while the Freaks are more about finesse. If that makes sense. Both crews have a lot of personality and had their theatrical moments. Both have had awesome moments. If you look at their overall resume this season, it's pretty darn even. I'd be interested to hear why people vote for whomever they vote for.
  • My one tiny quibble with Beat Freaks is that I feel like there's still a big, jaw-dropping trick in their bag that they never pulled out. Regardless, I do love them and in my book they have the best number of the season (the Levitating Ball).
  • To be fair, my one tiny quibble with Quest Crew is that I don't think they fully capitalized on the non-breaking/flipping choreography they're wonderfully capable of. But they started the season strong and finished strong. Can't argue with that.
  • The usual past crew suspects were on hand at the taping this week (that I spotted) including Ronnie from Supercr3w, Taeko from Fysh n Chicks, and most of Fanny Pak. I also saw Wesley Jonathon (City Guys, What I Like About You, Roll Bounce) floating about backstage, who no doubt was there to support the Beat Freaks since he's in the upcoming movie B-Girl with Lady Jules.

Okay folks, what are your thoughts? Were you surprised by anything that went down tonight? Who are you pulling for and why? Who do you think will win? And are you *gasp* tired of my various lunch-taking metaphors?

I'm really hung right now about who to vote for. I was a little disappointed by the Beat Freaks, today was not up to their standard of their last two weeks. And Quest just demolished any doubts arising from last week. This is really tough..I really do admire the bgirls for being strong women who dont rely on sex appeal. But I'm still leaning towards Quest. In the end, the deciding factor for me is that the Beat Freaks appear to be a group of the very best female dancers in Cali who just decided to get together and compete for the show..tjhough they formed in 03, they all seem to have very independent schedules. But Quest seems like a real crew, theri friendship is evident, and more like the underdog unprofessional crew I think ABDC set out to discover. Quest is my vote

No idea who should win.. but wow Quest was sick tonight! It's definitely gonna be one of those moments where you're happy for the winner, yet sad for the loser! But I wouldn't have any other way :)

Agree- it's a toss up because Quest was amazing tonight! I'll be ok with either winning. And JC said it right- FINALLY the actual best 2 crews are in the finale! (Kaba Modern S1 and Fanny Pak S2 were robbed of their spots IMO)

I agree Quest Crew really brought it this week and although Beat Freaks have been good throughout the season, today's performance where it really mattered was much weaker than other weeks. I do admire that they don't use the sex appeal as mentioned but all in all Quest is the best crew and the friendship between them is different.

I actually saw on youtube that Beat Freaks have been in music videos before so they are somewhat considered professionals already and on the other hand Quest is just a bunch of guy friends who can really dance. My vote is 100% for Quest Crew!!!

i love me some Quest, but it's a damn shame that Beat Freaks fumbled the rock during the 2-minute warning drive!!!

i was all set to crown them the champs...then, i was shocked to see a sub-par(for them!) performance. it's not like it was "bad", but it kinda looked a little like Fly Khicks--and, that's not a good thing.

they did like Carla did on Top Chef...they didn't come with THEIR flavor in the last challenge--they were thinkin' too much!

i won't be upset if america gives it to BF, but long live the Q!!!

Between the consistently great Beat Freaks and Quest, who just owned this week, I don't give a flying swear word who wins.

Quest has definitely been the more consistent crew and they destroyed it in this episode. This was the equalizer episode. This tested what each crew can do when given the same music and parameters. So of course this episode matters more than any other. No gimmicks. No varied props that favor one team or the other. I used to love BF. I think they're all highly qualified and I can see why folks wanting a female crew to win would pick them--it'd be hard to imagine a better, more legitimate all-female crew. But to me they're like Super Crew--talented but generally flat, uncharismatic and over reliant on their cred. Quest has the charisma and talent for the win!

george - I think the problem with Beat Freaks this week was that they were concentrating a little too hard. It's not that they're uncharismatic, they just weren't living in the moment so to speak.

Breann - Just because the members of BF have worked professionally doesn't mean they're not a legit crew and friends.

Quest Crew is every much as professional as Beat Freaks with three members previously competing and touring with So You Think You Can Dance. While I like both crews I lean towards Beat Freaks because they are true dancers with tricks sprinkled on top like the cherry on a sundae. Quest relies too heavily on acrobatic b-boy tricks in place of choreography. Beat Freaks looked a little tired and under-rehearsed last night but they were still the most versatile and entertaining crew of season 3 for me.

quest is best
they will win
no question
