Joaquin Phoenix brings his own brand of crazy to 'Letterman'
We're not sure that Joaquin Phoenix did his new movie Two Lovers any favors with his appearance on Late Show With David Letterman Wednesday (Feb. 11) night, but people will definitely be talking about him for the next couple days.Wearing dark shades and a black suit, Phoenix squirmed when Letterman innocently asked an icebreaker about his full beard and needed to be reminded that his co-star in the movie was Gwyneth Paltrow.
He did take it in good stride though when Letterman asked, "What can you tell me about your days with the Unabomber?" and seemed genuinely baffled when the audience laughed at his describing his music as "more hip-hop."
And, to his credit, when Letterman saved his harshest lines for the end of the interview -- "Joaquin, I'm sorry you couldn't be here tonight ... we owe Farrah Fawcett an apology" -- Phoenix chuckled, "You're funny ... You're a funny dude."
Witness the lunacy below:

This is Andy Kaufman all the way -- and done well too. Joaquin is a phenomenal actor, and the readers at EverHype (www.everhype.com/?utm_source=bc) gave Gladiator a high 4.25 stars and called it "Fantastic." Hip hop? I think he can pull it off well if he trys. He's brilliant!
Crispin Glover, you've been replaced.
There is no way this is an act. Why? It would not get him any business in either the movie world or the music world. Although- maybe it is. I never bought Andy Kaufman's "genius" either. He was also crazy.
I have always respected Joaquin Pheonix as an actor and I was always surprised he wasn't more messed up in the head about seeing his brother die. I am thinking that and the pressure of Hollywood has finally made him snap. He was so not there for any of that interview. I don't think Dave Letterman should've have been laughing at him though. He seems to be mentally unstable.
This is obviously staged. For whatever reason, Joaquin Phoenix has been trying his best to get in the news...and this is a perfect example. You can tell he's acting up there b/c when Dave makes the Unibomber joke, Joaquin cracks a smile but quickly closes his mouth and puts his head down to hide it. Funny interview.
If you ever watch previous Joanquin Pheonix interviews with Dave, they are always this Joanquin-is-not-quite-here experiences with extreme awkwardness from Dave's part. But man, that really takes the cake.
Wow, them's some serious drugs he's on.
Apparently, Joaquin and friends are supposedly doing some sort of film/mockumentary about his band and I'm wondering if this is a part of it. Anyone else know about this? And if it is, it ain't working! Andy Kaufman and his Tony Clifton thing was weird too bak in the day. But he managed to pull it off.
lk to Line", he was excellent.
He seems to be acting like Johnny Cash now.
That's right, Katie. I forgot about the do***entary (I heard it was a do***entary not a mo***entary) that I think Casey Affleck is directing. That could be it. I just think it's a major mistake if this is all an act. But, the alternative is that he needs serious psychiatric help and I'm not sure that is any better.
That was really messed up all around.
Jaoquin was *not* always such a good sport during this interview and Dave definitely started getting mean...
It wasn't really funny. I felt kind of bad for both guys; it's a highly uncomfortable situation.
