'The Biggest Loser: Couples': Opportunity wasted
Hey kids! Let's play spot the hypocrisy this week on The Biggest Loser: Couples! Compare the statements people make at the beginning of the episode with those they make at the end, when it's time for elimination. It's fun for the whole family!
This spoiler does not consider fried chicken a salad item.
We pick up this week right after Jerry's departure, and everyone is sad and a little indignant. Mandi and Blaine seem particularly peeved.
Temptation challenge! The team that consumes the most calories gets a private day with their partner and trainer at home. Teams Purple, Pink, Red, Green, Black and Brown choose not to eat anything. Mandi gets tearful at the thought of spending time at home with her kids, so she nibbles a slice of pizza. Aubrey ate nothing and encourages her sister remember why they're playing the game, prompting more tears form Mandi. Filipe ate nothing, but Sione noshed on pizza and tacos in hopes of getting Bob to come visit and whip him into shape. Joelle went so far as to put a donut in her mouth, but she didn't actually eat it. Carla, one the other hand...She consumed three slices pizza, five chicken nuggets, one taco and two cupcakes. Holy crap!
Team Silver gets the prize. But wait -- what about Team Orange? They are conspicuously absent from the challenge, and I call foul. David chose fried chicken during regular meals. Are we supposed to believe he turned down the good stuff when he had a quasi-legitimate reason to eat it?
Bob travels to Detroit with Joelle, and it's painful. When he tells Carla that Joelle is slacking, Carla gets crazy. She screams at Joelle, loud enough to make other people in the gym stick their head in the room to see what's happening. After Carla repeats how horrible Joelle is for the thousandth time, Joelle basically shuts down. Joelle is acting like a petulant child, but I can't say I blame her. Nice going, guys -- you made me feel sorry for Joelle. Thanks a lot.
The Challenge
It's time for a "classic" Biggest Loser challenge -- the swing hop! The last one standing who doesn't break the bar get immunity. Joelle thinks that she'll be able to do this -- but breaks the bar on the first swing. Ron, Dan and Helen follow quickly. Damien and Filipe last longer, but they end up breaking the bar as well. Then Mandi's out, which prompts tears. Again.
That leaves Tara, Kristin and Dane. Blaine yells that Dane can't let the girls beat him. Haven't you learned that those playground tactics just make the girls want to kick your butt? Indeed, Dane breaks the bar soon after. Kristin and Tara keep hopping for 2 hours and 19 minutes -- more than 1000 jumps. In the end, Kristin loses focus first and snaps the bar. She's devastated, and even Tara feels bad about it. She comforts Kristin, that goes off to puke. Again.
The Weigh-in
Tara has immunity -- but this week, she doesn't need it. She posts an 8 pound loss, and is thrilled. Teams Black and Brown both have crazy good weeks -- Brown loses a combined total of 20 pounds, with Mike losing more than his dad for the first time. Team Black drops 30 pounds combined. That's just nuts. Dan also has a stellar week, dropping 15 pounds, while Filipe kicks butt with a 14-pound loss. Wow.
Helen, Kristin and Mandi are in the mid range -- they lose 6, 7 and 8 pounds, respectively. Damien has a disappointing week, dropping "only" 4 pounds. However, he has some hope -- Joelle drops "only" 6 pounds, which means she's the other person below the yellow line. Surely she's going home... right?
Both Damien and Joelle are members of Bob's team. The other team members are all for sending Joelle home. Jillian's team consults with Bob's folks, saying they respect their decision to boot off Joelle. At the vote, things seem to be going according to plan: Team Brown, Filipe, Kristin and Helen all vote for Joelle. Joy!
But Jillian's team suddenly changes its tune. Mandi, who at the top of the show complained about Joelle being "wishy-washy," is suddenly concerned with Carla's well-being. Blaine, who said "Joelle doesn't work as hard as everyone else and is just crazy," now thinks Joelle needs this. Tara, who asked Joelle point blank if she wanted to stay (Joelle hemmed and hawed and couldn't answer), thinks Joelle deserves another chance. Dan rounds out the vote for Damien. It's a tie, and because Damien had the lowest percentage of weight loss, he's going home. Argh!
Both Damien and Nicole look damn good in their at-home interview -- Nicole has lost 76 pounds, while Damien has dropped 74. I'm happy for them... but I'm so freaking mad at Jillian's team that I can hardly even focus on them. Argh!
Highlights, thoughts and odds and ends
- We got more evidence of what life on the ranch is like when Bob calls back to the ranch from Detroit, and just about everyone on his team seems to be icing their legs. Don't try this at home!
- Dr. H. talks to Don and Blaine about their medications -- specifically, how they don't need them any more. But two of Blaine's meds were for depression or anxiety. While weight loss and exercise can certainly help, I'm not sure exercise endorphins alone can make up for a chemical imbalance in the brain. Plus, those are meds you have to carefully wean yourself off of-- just quitting can seriously mess with your head. It seems irresponsible for them to imply that once you start working out, you can pitch your Prozac with no ill effects.
- I almost think that Dr. H took all those pills from Blaine so he could feed them to Bob, who looks like he's about to lose his mind from dealing with Joelle and Carla.
- Carla goes bonkers on Joelle, screaming and berating her at every opportunity. Carla: That approach is not working. Shut it.
- Carla really needs to pay attention when Bob talks. She started heaving a barbell to show Joelle how much harder she works, while Bob tries to get her to stop because her form was lousy and she risked serious injury. Pay attention to the Bob!
- David seems to be having the most trouble at home. He goes out to eat with someone, who asks if there's a salad bar. Yup, says David, picking up fried chicken. "I can't believe you're eating fried chicken and Daniel is working his tail off right now." the friend says. "It's only one piece -- depending on how hungry I am when I'm done with it," David replies. Sigh.
- Dr. Jillian spends some time with Mandi, who is hitting an emotional wall and crying a lot. I know this show is a hell of a thing to go through, and Mandi is dealing with years of psychological issues, but I wish she didn't cry all the freaking time....
- The other constant refrain - Tara puking. She was apparently throwing up in her mouth throughout the challenge. If we establish a Biggest Loser drinking game, Mandi crying and Tara puking would definitely be on the list. We'd be smashed within minutes.
- Filipe looks about ready to kill Blaine when he votes for Damien. Next week is going to be interesting...
- Why did Jillian's team do it? Are they trying to weaken Bob's folks by keeping the weak, annoying and distracting link there? Are they hoping to see Bob lose it again? Or do they just hate me and want me to suffer?

It looks like Jill's team is getting revenge on Bob's team for the seasons past of transgressions. Why else would they keep Joelle?
Also, I wanted to stab David in the gut. WTF? Fried chicken? And wasn't he eating hot dogs last week? Dude. Seriously. You might want to start picking out your coffin.
"It's just like jumping rope, right? I can do that!" The second they showed that footage, I knew Joelle would be the first out. I did think she'd get more than 0.5 jumps in, though.
That's a good point about dropping meds cold turkey, but itwas shocking that it was a $700k in medicine he was able to stop taking, especially considering his estimated lifespan couldn't have been that long. If health won't motivate people, money might.
Carla was really annoying, but it's got to be hard being the one working alone, then finding out your partner is goofing around. She and Daniel need to switch partners.
I don't think there was any group plan by Jillian's team (surely the producer's would have shown that sort of scheming). I'd guess more just individuals realizing Joelle won't last much longer anyway and Damien was more of a threat. Glad to see both Damien and Nicole looking so good.
Great episode. We really are enjoying this season compared to the horrible last one.
The voting was a shock, but I guess when you think about it Joelle was the much weaker threat so it makes sense. And..it will provide for some good TV next week when Carla returns. Can't wait to see that. We're still rooting for the Silver team to win it all. Definitely not the popular choice, but Carla has provided all of the entertainment so far. That outburst in the gym was cl***ic. Did you notice the gym employee running into the room near the end of her screaming. He must have thought something was going down in there.
Boo Hoo Mandi, we hope you go home next. So you have kids at home and think you should have won the temptation challenge and been rewarded with a home visit. As if no one else there has anyone important at home they might want to have visited? Get a life. Judging by the number of times that one was seen crying she either has a serious emotional problem or she's trying to copy Michelle's initial behavior from last season. We're also getting tired of Helen's ego too.
Yeh, what was up with that fried chicken. Dude it doesn't matter if you eat one piece or three..you are still eating FRIED foods. At least show some attempt at making a change to your life when you've been given this great opportunity.
Can't wait til next week.
Did they ever say why the orange team dude wasn't at the challenge? If they did I missed it. I am done with team Silver. The screaming that went on last night was too much. It does seem as if Joelle had some serious mental health issues, but that Carla, good grief, put a sock in it already!! It looks like from the previews that both the youngest players will be up for elimination. Thanks for taking out the surprise producers. Oh, and I love the blue team. Filipe is so funny!!
Cl***ic case of viewer manipulation. It appears the show through judicious editing leads the viewers to conclusion just to sucker punch them into being outraged at the results. I'll ***ume that cameras caught Jillian's team strategizing how to vote and giving the reasons they chose Joelle.
We might ***ume they want Joelle around to pull low numbers the final week of singles so they had a better chance of getting their partners back to the ranch. The joke's on them if Joelle finally loses double digits, but they are betting that her past behavior will remain underperforming. It's a good tactic if it works AND it gets their partners back.
I tivo the show and start watching it about an hour in and I usually finish it in about an hour. I FF'd all of the screaming. I was watching it but I got so sick of the same thing being said. Besides, I don't think Carla is working as hard as she says she is. I want the silver team off as soon as possible. I thought we were free of crappy contestants once Vicki & Heba were gone. I don't enjoy watching people tear each other down.
I doubt the doctor's just stopped those people's meds cold turkey. That was obviously for the benefit of the viewers. I am sure they are being responsible about it. I like Dr. H and can't see him putting anyone in harm's way like that.
I know that a couple of those medications were for depression and anxiety since I was also on one of them and I was surprised when they mentioned it. But, I will say this. I was misdiagnosed for almost 3 years with depression when it was discovered I had sleep apnea. Doctor's are so quick to just give medication. Everyone also seems so quick to say depression but the symptoms are very similar. I lost over 65 lbs and I sleep better and am medication free and I don't have to wear the mask.
Very suprised that Damien got the axe; funny that it only took two weeks for them to turn from a friendly weight loss contest to a cut-throat one. From the looks of it, Carla looks like she's possessed to drop 250 pounds. I'm starting to think that if Joelle survives next week everyone is in for a rude awakening with Carla's return.
Maybe if they hung a donut within arms' reach Joelle would have done better than half a second. Seriously, how she got on that show and really doesn't seem to care when others no doubt want to be there is ridiculous.
A couple of things:
Joelle is a 41yr old acting as if she's 12. She still lives with her mother. This person my friends, is a loser and not in the weight loss sense. I wish she'd have landed on Jillian's team. Jillian would have killed her by now, and it would have been 10x Bob's little temper tantrum the other day. Carla has no room to talk about diligent weight loss and healthy choices. That pig ate 2700 calories of garbage food in one sitting!!! David is headed to an early grave. Fried Chicken at a buffet when he's been given a chance to get healthy? He's destined for failure. I don't know about anyone else, but I am fed up with the repetitive bullcrap this show does. I want to see the day to day stuff. Meals, training, recovery in the training room. I want to see just what all these people have to go through to drop such extreme amounts of weight in such a short time. I don't want to see a screaming match between a bully and a retard. Joelle, please complete a sentence.
hmmmmm....I too think they should show more day to day "stuff". This group had me fooled I thought it would take them much longer to start "game play"...they seemed so camp***ionate to each other becaue of their size...so, it means they only kept Daniel around because he is the weaker link not becaue he "needs" to be on the ranch.
