'Desperate Housewives': 2009 is the year of the crazy mom
Desperate Housewives should resolve to give Lily Tomlin more to do this year, because Roberta is officially my favorite thing about this show. And after tonight, Lee is a close second. Listening to opera in a kimono instead of having to work is my newest aspiration.
Lynette: After Bob busts the Scavos on the whole Preston/Porter switcheroo and gives them two days to sort it out before he reports them, Lynette tries to pressure Preston into telling Porter to come home so that they don't lose the restaurant when Porter's bail is forfeited. Preston tells her about Mr. Schilling's threat, and throws down one of my favorite lines of the night: "I'm not gonna let my brother risk his life so you and Dad can sell pizza!" Well, when you put it that way...
After an ominous talk about keeping her family safe, Lynette shows Preston a bar where Mr. Schilling goes every night, and implies that she's about to run him down with her car. Um, yeah, even though it was clear that she was bluffing, Lynette's crazy mom act is way too believable these days. Though Preston convinces Porter to talk to Lynette, she doesn't have a chance to sway him before her crazy mom hangs up his phone and tells Porter not to trust Lynette. Yep, he's staying with grandma! Definitely didn't see that one coming.
Bree: Elsewhere in the crazy mom department, Alex's unemployed cocktail waitress mom comes to stay with the Hodges. She gets off to a great start by "calling" Christmas with the boys. Bree honestly seems more upset about her rough manners than her clearly manipulative nature, which is kind of funny. Although drinking and then crushing beer cans on Bree's stoop may be a worse offense to Bree than being manipulative, I suppose. But when crazy mom tries to get Andrew and Alex to move to her town, since real estate there is cheaper, the gloves come off and Bree announces that she's bought them a house in town. Game, set, match. Crazy mom totally deserved it - taking your host's seat at the head of the table is beyond rude.
Susan: With Jackson out of town, Susan goes clubbing with Lee. She finds out that Jackson has been offered a job in his old town, and considers going with him. Lee hits her with an awesome "it's closing time at the bar and you're just going for the guy who's there" analogy, and then they get drunk and wind up in bed together. Susan, upon seeing the evidence of a smooth jazz CD in her stereo (HA!), assumes they had sex. Uh...can she really not tell? Bob comes over later to worriedly ask Susan if Lee really stayed at her place the night before, and after Susan awkwardly confirms it, Bob admits that "when Lee's got a few drinks in him, he'll bang anything with a pulse and facial hair." Snap. I find this just as hilarious as Gaby did.
After Lee reminds Susan that he's gay, and they definitely didn't do it, Susan says that she still wants to move in with Jackson. The reason she gives, however, is that HE loves HER. Um, yeah, that's really not enough. Especially when you'd be moving your son away from his dad! Lee is the total voice of reason, suggesting that she hold off until she loves Jackson back. These two are totally cute friends!
Gaby: Carlos quits his masseur job at the country club because it turns out that when you can see, "naked people are gross" (TOTALLY FAIR), and Gaby isn't very understanding. An old business associate offers him a well-paying job, but Carlos would rather work with the blind. I can understand Gaby's frustration there, I guess, since they have two kids to provide for. When Gaby has the associate and his very bitter wife over to dinner, it becomes abundantly clear that the busy, high-pressure job totally ruins your family life.
Gaby still wants Carlos to take it though, asking that he take a turn caring for everyone after her years of dealing with bounced daycare checks and overdue gas bills. And again, I do feel some sympathy here, though it quickly diminishes once Gaby happily admires a fancy new pair of shoes after Carlos takes the job.
Dave: Dave has run out of a prescription medication, and is having a rough time holding it together. Which is apparently illustrated by rouging his cheeks like a psychotic clown. When Edie walks in on him crazily whispering to himself, he spins around and hits her. Scary. After he later admits that he was married before he and Edie met, and his wife died, Edie kicks him out. I'm surprised she waited for that - if it were me, his ass would've been out the door with the crazy whispering and hitting.
In a side plot that goes nowhere for now, but is quite amusing, Mrs. McCluskey and Lily Tomlin camp out in Dr. Heller's waiting room, stonewalled by the receptionist until they annoy her into admitting that Dr. Heller went missing while out of town. Seriously, I need more Lily Tomlin in my life.
Any new insights into the mystery? How do you feel about the Susan/Lee dream team?
Thought this episode was a bit flat and needed more pep and energy. I think they need to speed up the Dave storyline a bit.
It takes a lot to make me sympathize with Bree but Alex's totally horrible mom certainly accomplished that. I'm still finding the transformation of Bad Andrew, hit-and-run driver and seducer of his mom's boyfriend, into a stable husband and potential father a bit of a challenge to accept.
Lots of sympathy for Gabby and none for Carlos. He should do the job and bank the money for a few years, then quit and fulfill himself.
Not missing Jackson at all.
I did not really like this episode. I thought Gabby was being selfish even though i understand your point about how they have two kids to support. I wished Lily T. had more to do too, she is great. I want to know more about Edie and Daves relationship because what has Dave told Edie about his past and how did they end up married. It was really obvious that Susan did not sleep with Lee. Lynnett is going crazy!!!!!

DH Lover | Jan 5, 2009 9:54:35 AM | #It started again last night, lover. I loved the episode. Seems like prime DH. The only ones missing last night were Mike and Katherine. I did miss them. Otherwise, another great episode in a stellar season. Loving the Dave mystery plot this year. So intriguing and I don't think we really know what it is all about--I think some of things revealed to us are just red herrings--like in an old fashioned Agatha Christie Miss Marple murder mystery. WEll, one can hope can't one.

I, too, was confused by Edie's decision to toss Dave out because he hadn't told her he was married before. So much more he's done has been worthy of showing him the door!
I gotta say, I'm with Carlos. If it hadn't been for that ridiculous pair of gold stilletos, perhaps I would be more sympathetic to Gabby's cause. Perhaps if she had said to Carlos, "Just do it for a few years so we can save up a nice 'financial freedom fund' then go do fulfilling work." But no, she gleefully puts her ugly gold shoes that made my feet hurt just looking at them in the closet after forcing her husband to sell his soul and his family for the almighty dollar.
Jen | Jan 5, 2009 11:49:24 AM | #I liked the episode except for the forced/fake device of Lily and Mrs. M. walking out of the doctor's office just before the receptionist mentions that the caller lives on Wisteria Lane. Stop dangling plot development like that and give us some actual plot development! Sure, they come all the way to Boston, wait for hours, hear the receptionist finally tell them the doctor is missing, and have an opportunity to listen in on a phone conversation, and at precisely that moment, Lily decides she has had enough and they leave? Poor.

Barb | Jan 5, 2009 1:45:22 PM | #Carlos is being selfish to his family. I understand that he wants to give back, but he needs to bring in an better income. Gabby has been the one who had to be stressed regarding their finances. She sacrificed a lot.
Susan & Lee are fun. I'm glad that "Desperate Housewives" did not ignore Jackson by providing a voice and figure the viewers will forget Jackson even existed.
Missed Katherine.
Carly | Jan 5, 2009 1:45:28 PM | #Lee made me like Susan again. Not having Katherine (Dana needs more to do) did allow me to notice (and appreciate) Bree's return to form. Though, come on, Alex had to be highly aware of his mother's over the top behavior. Tad contrived.
Lynnette- still over acting and not interesting, though her mom is a good twist. Gaby v carlos - no sympathy for haggy, but carlos still needs to take a job that will cover basic costs. Happy to see Eva didn't magically shrink back down to twig size, btw.
What's left? Dave who cares. Edie- good for you. Lily and Karen - teehee.
More Katherine and Bob and Lee. For Bree's story they really should be giving some character development time to Andrew and Alex.
Speaking as someone who has friends who said they would do "corporate" for a few years and then look for something more fulfilling, it really doesn't work that way. Few really broke out of it. Once you're used to a certain lifestyle, it is hard to give it up. I think the story is setting up for Gaby to get her come-uppance.
Eric | Jan 5, 2009 10:11:37 PM | #I'm with Gaby. Carlos has two daughters that need to be put through college. Suck it up for a few years, save a lot of money, and then do what you love after you've secured your family's financial future. Not too much of a sacrifice, I don't think.
Lynette is completely off her rails. I think she got brain damage from falling on her head or something. That was some bad mothering in that car with Preston.
I like Susan and Lee as pals. I'm glad Bob and Lee are getting more face time on the show. Lee is definitely a 'desperate househusband'.
I've always liked Bree, and this season has shown her more human side a lot more. She's still every bit the Republican Überhomemaker, but the way she's embraced Andrew's fiancé, to the point of buying them a house so they'll stay in Fairview, is very touching.
Love Mrs. McCluskey and her sister. Lily Tomlin is one of my all-time faves.
I liked the Dave and Edie stuff, but I don't think I'll ever manage to sympathize with Edie. I was hoping the Dave storyline would rehabilitate her a bit, her character needs to grow in some way.
I missed Katherine. :/

Agree that I loved the scene where Bob comes to ask Susan about whether Lee spent the night. Very funny.
The high powered well paid job for Carlos was rather convenient but surely he could have got something in between no-pay community work and high paid soul-less capitalist?
This was a pretty fun episode.
Wasn't crazy about this episode.
Susan should certainly know if she had sex with someone.(Who writes these things?)
I was somewhat bemused that Edie decided her marriage was over because Dave said he'd been married before. At their age, most marriages take place between people who have been previously wed - like Edie herself. She had plenty of other reasons to call it quits, but that shouldn't have been one of them. The background to their marriage has never made much sense. As a motivational speaker, his bio should have been readily available.
Maureen, Edie said she gave Dave the boot b/c he lied to her, not b/c he had been married prior. So, we are left to infer that he told her he had never been married.
