Week 9 results on 'Dancing with the Stars'
While many Dancing with the Stars results shows are jam-packed with throwaway segments that sometimes make me want to poke out an eye, this week's managed to entertain me pretty much the whole time. Amazing!
Spoilers
In the recap hour preceding the results show, the Junior contestants took the stage since there are about 1,458 musical performances on the following hour. In case you're wondering, here's what happened:
Kirill & Hannah - Tony was their pro mentor. He was impressed by how quickly they learned and applied his pointers. They danced a Cha Cha to "Get Ready" by The Temptations. Hannah's lines were fantastic. They're both really great dancers.
Mitchell & Maria are next. Julianne was their mentor and she says she doesn't think she was this good at their ages. They do a Samba to "Mas Que Nada." They were good too - very smooth.
Craig & Samantha close it out. Maks is their mentor and teaches them a sliding step amongst other tips. They do a Jive to "Rockin' Robin" by The Jackson Five. Wow. They're crazy good too. Both of them have really great lines and dance with such personality.
They were all good but I'm a bit partial to Mitchell & Maria. They just have a little extra something to me. The good thing about it is that no matter who wins, all three couples will get a trip to Disneyland ("in the interest of corporate synergy," says Tom Bergeron).
The results show kicks of with a performance of "Chain of Fools" by Aretha Franklin. The pros dancing with her are Karina, Anna, Louis, and Dmitri of So You Think You Can Dance fame. I have to digress a moment here because they cut to the singers in the band and that one, you know the one, was all cleavage and chandeliers (both on her head and hanging off her ears) and a shiny black dress that looked like it might be made of some sort of plastic. I know I'm just feeding the fire by talking about her but Sweet Buttery Christmas! Anyway, Aretha was good as always but not fully up to form. But who cares because it's Aretha. Bow down. Also, Karina and Anna's hair was all fuzzy and huge and crazy.
After the requisite mini-recap (they love their recaps) and some commercials, Leona Lewis graces us with a song - thankfully "Bleeding Love" and not the new single which I don't think does her voice justice. Maks and Kariana are our pros for this one doing what appears to be a Rumba. I normally don't dig Rumbas but I really like this one.
Post-leaderboard standings, Tom and Samantha ask the judges what could send each contestant to the finals. Len says Cody's enthusiasm could take him far. Bruno believes Lance's creativity and interpretation are special. Carrie Ann of course credits Warren's sense of showmanship. And...another commercial break.
Julianne Hough gets to sing, probably for the first time on TV, her single "My Hallelujah Song" as Mark Ballas, Lacey, and Derek dance. She also dances some, nothing too strenuous. Lacey does a really cool turn sequence during her solo at the beginning. All and all, Julianne did well. She has a lot of potential.
Back from them trying to sell us stuff, John Legend takes the stage with his new single "Green Light." He's got a bunch of dancers and he's working a modern American Band Stand/Soul Train vibe at the beginning. He moves to a Kryptonian/Fortress of Solitude type stage in the middle of the floor while his dancers work it out in front of him. They even do a Soul Train line. Awesome. I like the 60's soul vide a lot of the music is adopting now.
To allow the stagehands time to break down the Last Stage of Krypton, there's an interview package with loved ones of the Final Four - Warren and Cody's moms, Brooke's fiance, and Lance's granddad (who says how he votes with both his cell and landline). Oh...and more commercials.
Musical performance #456 is the return of Aretha Franklin singing "Respect" as current champs Kristi Yamaguchi & Mark perform. It was quite impressive - you'd think she was on this season.
More filler! A segment of faux trash-talking from the last four contestants. And by trash-talking, it's really just saying what makes the other dancers so good and why they're "dangerous." I like how they're all emerging from smoke and fog in the footage. Hilarity.
Finally we're down to business. The first couple in the finals is...Lance Bass & Lacey. Yay! Also moving on is Brooke Burke & Derek. Not surprised at all. Tom clarifies that Cody and Warren aren't necessarily in the bottom to but, really? Come on...
After one last word from our sponsors, the axe has fallen on young Cody Linley & Julianne. He takes the info as well as he could and expresses his gratitude for the experience. They play a farewell package (which Susan Lucci nor to my recollection Maurice Greene got) with an inset of the two watching. And of course they play him crying again. I think the biggest up side is Cody's new hair. So much better than when he first started. Their goodbye song is "You Can't Always Get What You Want" which Cody and Julianne do a little butt-shimmy to.
Was anyone surprised by the results? Did you think they could fit that many musical performances into one show? Any assorted thoughts you'd like to share?
Julianne actually sang earlier in the year on 'The View'.

A R E T H A ! ! !
cactus | Nov 19, 2008 2:42:04 AM | #Julianne's also sang on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" last week.
LudHugs | Nov 19, 2008 4:51:29 AM | #Aretha was once amazing, but it's over now. I think she gets out of breath too easily to really belt it out. Both of her performances were terrible. We don't need to pretend she's still good just because she was an incredible singer in her prime.
Jake | Nov 19, 2008 6:31:36 AM | #Perfect results show. Next, I don't care who wins as long as it's not Warren (although I adore him).
cynx | Nov 19, 2008 8:07:20 AM | #what's up with Warren kissing on Kim johnson she looks uncomfortable with it
jm | Nov 19, 2008 8:14:11 AM | #Julianne performed at the CMA Fest and it was broadcast on ABC (she also hosted it).
Jill | Nov 19, 2008 9:13:15 AM | #Anyone know the name of the song that Lacey and Lance did the Mambo to on Monday's(11-17-08) episode??????
YZD | Nov 19, 2008 9:20:09 AM | #Lance and Lacey did the mambo to Straight to Number One (Duck's Radio Mix) by Touch and Go. The band did a pretty decent job. You can find it on YouTube.
Brooke will be in the finals. I think her dancing the last couple of weeks has been a disappointment. Her knees are always bent and her foot work isn't very good. I think everyone telling her how good she is has gone to her head and now her dances suck. Lance has improved the most. Warren isn't very good in the footwork department either. My vote goes for Lance, at least his dances have been creative. Brooke just relies on her looks and lack of clothing to get her thru. She isn't that good.
Carrie | Nov 19, 2008 10:04:08 AM | #I'm torn, I really like Kym, but I don't want Warren to win. I really liked Julianne's song. I've seen her on shows perfoming her songs too. I liked seeing Kristi and Mark again.
This season's mirror ball trophy will go to a couple where the professional dancer has never received one, (at least in our American version) so that's great, it's good to have some variety.
Penny | Nov 19, 2008 10:07:59 AM | #Kristi looks like one of the pro's... I wonder if she has continued practicing. The stars this season clearly do not measure up. Warren is adorable and Lance has improved a lot, but, still. I guess I have to say that Brooke should win if she performs up to her standard, but this week she was awful. I do appreciate her pushing herself to get that "wow" factor. Oh, well, one week left! And then we get to wait for the unveiling of next season's stars!!
Michelle | Nov 19, 2008 10:35:10 AM | #To John Legend's performance, what in the world was that "dance" action??? They looked like young kids trying to learn how to dance. Ridiculous!
Loved Julianne's singing. She's my fav dancer also. Sorry to see her leave.
boo hoo...so sorry to see Cody (& Julianne) go. i think it hurt him to have the partner change right when he was starting to really get it.
Warren's fun but i don't think he deserves to win. and please NOT Brooke. so, i guess it's all about Lance now. if he dances as well as he did in the semi's, he should be a shoe-in to win! (if he can keep his shoe on, hee hee).
old(er) or overweight, Aretha's still got it and i enjoyed her performances SO MUCH. could've done without John Legend.
enjoyed the kids more than usual, they were all amazing. i voted for Kirill & Hannah.
Tamara, love your chandelier reports! (every show i now specifically watch for them)
Glad and not so glad of Cody's elimination. Cody's elimination has made the competition for Brooke & Lance even harder. If Warren was eliminated, Cody would obviously be the one in third place and Brooke's competition is Lance.
I'm torn between Brooke & Lance!
Wonderful to see Kristi!
How did they manage to squeeze in so many musical guests?
So glad I watched the recap hour, I didn't know that the junior competition would be in the recap episode.
Carly | Nov 19, 2008 12:42:53 PM | #Ah...I knew Julianne was appearing on stuff but I didn't know she'd performed that many times. See what happens when you don't look at your Tivo enough? You get all out of touch.
Jake - Even though Aretha isn't as good as she used to be, she's still better than a lot of people selling millions of records right now. And it's also hard to stack up against your past when you were consistently AMAZING.
Tamara B. | Nov 19, 2008 2:05:51 PM | #Loved the whole 2 hours, but did not want Warren in the finals, those feet of his got to go, sorry. Its going to be a fight between Lance and Brooke, I can't decide and can't wait until the next show. WOW
Char | Nov 19, 2008 2:29:44 PM | #I was hoping Cody would stay (and Warren would leave instead). Brooke is not my favorite, but at least there is one woman in the finals.
Go Lance!
No surprise to see Cody go as I'm sure I'm not the only one who got sick of his weeping and wailing over Julianne. At first he was cute but then he became just embarrassing.
Honestly, does Julianne have to bed ALL her partners? LOL!
I was hoping that Warren was the one to leave last night as he's obese and ugly and I can't stand him. He has no charm which everyone keeps dribbling on about. He also can't dance. His shuffling and ass shaking isn't much better than Master P's quite frankly.
Too bad Toni didn't make it into the finals as I thought for sure she would have. That's someone who actually deserved to be in the finals.
I'm guessing Lance will win.
Crystal Diane Stevens | Nov 19, 2008 2:39:40 PM | #Brooke has the technique and looks, but no personality (and just compare her to Kristi to see how much Brooke lacks). Warren has the personality, but his dances are not as difficult as the others, so that leaves Lance, who I'd probably give the trophy to just for dancing to some crappy music all season (except last night), who has both the showmanship and the harder choreography to show for it. History shows that the winner is "popular/feel good-- Helio, Emmett, -- over technique, so that means Warren wins, but I'm pulling for Lance.
J | Nov 19, 2008 3:35:41 PM | #Wow some harsh statements about Warren! In my humble opinion both Warren and Cody have their strengths and charms that have taken them this far. But both are a step below Brooke and Lance - maybe in different ways, but a step below nonetheless. So for me personally I didn't much care who went first so long as they both go before Brooke and Lance do. I'm kind of hoping for Lance to win but will be happy either way.
Loved loved loved the junior competitors this season! I voted for the first pair - the little bitty ones - because I thought that for their age their cha cha cha was unbelievable. They weren't just cute and small, they were also technically very good. Adorable!
I thought this was a dancing program and not a gymnastics one. I enjoy the dancing but not the tossing of the bodies. Why not have new judges for th enew season.
That was a whole lot of filler. For those of us only interested in the results, it would have been possible to turn on the last 7 minutes and not miss a thing.
It was time for young Cody to go. I'm hoping the winner is either Brooke or Lance.
Warren's actual dancing isn't enough to warrant a win of a dancing competition. He would be the worst of all past winners, including Emmitt and Kelly.
Brooke and Lance have the best combo of technique and performance with Lance being better at performing and Brooke being a bit better with technique. A win for either of them would be fine by me. This is the first season ever I am not pulling for one particular couple to win.
Erin | Nov 20, 2008 7:07:50 AM | #This is an marvelous reality show
which is full of fun and spirituality. Tom Bergeron does a good job hosting. The judges are good, well, except for Bruno. Bruno is creepy. If you watch this show I think you will find out what I mean when I say. One thing that really gets to me is Cheryl. She is constantly a contestant and whenever she is one of the celebrities she always wins.Catch it Download Dancing with the stars Free
