Love flowers and deflowers on 'Friday Night Lights'

Zachgilford2_fridaynightlights_s2_2 Due to popular demand from at least two readers, it may be time to check in again on the residents of Dillon, the quarterback-swapping Panthers and the rest of the Friday Night Lights gang.

[Obviously this recap will contain spoilers, so if you haven't been watching on DirecTV, you may want to hold out until NBC airs the episodes, eh? Exactly.]

Actually, two weeks ago would have been the best time to check in after "Hello, Goodbye," which wasn't just the season's best episode to date, it was probably the series' best episode since Season One.

Last week wouldn't have been as good a time to check in. "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" was full of silly or retreaded subplots -- Julie gets a tattoo! Tami worries Tyra's a bad influence (again)! Matt gets pouty with his mom! -- and was probably the season's worst episode.

This Wednesday's (Nov. 5) DirecTV episode, titled "It Ain't Easy Being J.D. McCoy" put the show back on solid footing and included at least one massive plot development.

Matt and Julie finally made sweet, sweet love!

Some people will probably feel like Julie and Matt (or "Mulie" if you're one of those people who likes to combine couple names) rushed into the sexy-time, but they'd done the protracted build-up before. It yielded "I Think We Should Have Sex," which ranks as either my second or third favorite Friday Night Lights episode ever. But in the context of this season, the impetuous decision made a lot of sense. With his grandma, his ma and his benching, Matt has been going through a lot lately, while for Julie it was a bit of over-obvious symmetry that last week she got flowered (on her ankle) and this week she was deflowered. And, honestly, thank heavens she didn't sleep with The Swede or John From Cincinnati.

Aimeeteegarden_fridaynightlights_s2 Their first time was handled in that trademark, sensitive Friday Night Lights style, which is to say that after they started passionately making out and fell to the ground, everything was handled in dialogue-free, montage fashion. We got lots of shots of them sweetly driving home in the early morning all-aglow and we saw Julie staring into her mirror examining herself with an "I'm a woman now!" grin. There was nothing tawdry or salacious, which I'm sure disappointed a few viewers.

Julie and Matt were one of those couples where neither has ever been nearly as appealing as individuals or when paired with anybody else, so for the sake of Aimee Teegarden and Zach Gilford, I'm pleased.

But I have one major concern: Friday Night Lights is the sort of show where if we don't see characters using protection or discussing using protection, they probably didn't. Since this wasn't something that either of them planned and since Matt hasn't been getting any action since his grandma's nurse went back to Central America, it's unclear how prepared anybody was. I just don't feel like dealing with a "After having sex for the first time, Julie has a pregnancy scare" storyline. That sort of thing is so very FOX or The CW and yet it may well be inevitable. After all, the show is still dealing with Jason Street and his Miracle Baby.

Can I just say again how much I hated that plotline last season? Jason Street knocking up a waitress after a one-night stand and convincing the already financially struggling stranger to keep the baby just because it seemed like a biological impossibility still rubs me the wrong way, but the past two episodes have handled that arc well, if only because of how very good Scott Porter has been.

Even though Friday Night Lights has had to largely write out Gaius Charles' Smash and Porter's Street, the series has done well by its two originals. Charles was absolutely Emmy-worthy in "Hello, Goodbye," while Porter has gotten one great moment after another the past two weeks, particularly working his magic on Buddy Garrity last week and singing "Hole in the Bucket" to his son this week. Yeah, the stuff with Street, Herc and Team Riggins flipping Buddy's house has been beyond out-of-left-field, but it has been important to position the wheelchair-bound former-QB1 as a responsible father willing to do whatever it takes to support his son.

This contrasts him with bland rodeo clown Cash, who only seems to be around to make Tyra realize how great a guy Landry is and since I never believed in the Tyra-Landry romance last season, this isn't helping. Does anybody out there actually believe that Cash is telling the truth about the woman claiming to be the mother of his child? Me neither. The problem is that I don't care. Tyra's been on a poorly written rollercoaster this season, obsessing about her future one moment and falling into old habits the next. I'm assuming that she's on the verge of falling for Landry again, which will come just in time for Landry to have begun to romance the new Crucifictorious bass player.

Jesseplemons2_fridaynightlights_s2_ Am I think only one who thinks that Crucifictorious is a joke that's funniest the less we see of the band? Also, I continue to prefer Stigmatalingus as a band name. Mostly, though, I don't get why Landry suddenly has so much free time for band rehearsals and try-outs. Shouldn't he be at football practice? I'd become convinced that they'd dropped that stupid plotline this season -- he was really only playing to impress Tyra, which doesn't matter now -- but this episode featured two Landry Plays Football references (in Matt's dialogue and with his presence at the Naked Mile). I guess he's got lots of free time now that he's quit killing people.

Other thoughts on this week's episode:

  • Was this the show's most Applebees-tastic episode yet? Two scenes at the restaurant at at least two dialogue references to Applebees and its fine menu items. We should all be glad that Julie and Matt didn't have their romantic first time take place in an Applebees bathroom or something.
  • Where do you think we're heading with Robo-QB J.D. McCoy (still not to be confused with Texas QB Colt McCoy, who has the best name ever for a college quarterback)? If he's going to have a Todd Marinovich-style arc, they're going to have to rush it.
  • Good to have Minka Kelly back for an episode, if only for the outfit she wore to greet Riggins at practice.
  • I think if it weren't for Teegarden, I would really dislike Julie. The character's teenage girl petulance and lectures on hot dogs and burritos are only palatable because of the actress.
  • Tyra's whole Student Body President campaign was based around dance-planning and *that* was the best she could do? I like Rice Krispies squares too, but I'd expected more.
  • I'm always impressed with Kyle Chandler's ability to do great work even when he doesn't have a piece of any of the main storylines. He got great scenes with Grandma Saracen, Street, Daddy McCoy and with Mrs. Coach at the dance, all without having an A-plot.
  • Best throwaway jokes: The "We'll Finish in the AM!" note written in what I assume was blood on the load-bearing wall. Also, Coach Taylor's "Honey-Do" list.

OK. That covered a lot of ground, I think... Is anybody else watching the DirecTV episodes? If I get responses, I'll do more recaps... If there's silence... Well... I don't wanna make threats...

Thanks for that. I'm watching now and I'll be watching again on NBC. This is such a great show...even when it falters, it's way better than anything else on the networks. Your recap and comments were spot on. Pleae keep it up.

oops, Please keep it up :)

I am so ready for this show 2 get back on NBC. I miss my FNL!

I love this show and am so glad it is back! The whole Julie/ Matt relations always seems genuine to me. They seem like the only two who are "high school" students. Must say I even enjoyed the whole "Dillion Tour" Riggins provided to One-Two. Best line... Riggins "Lisa lives down this street"...McCoy "Who's Lisa?"... Riggins " Oh you'll know". Still have no clue how this show has not been nominateed for an Emmy. Hopefully more people will tune in when it starts on NBC :) everyone I know who has ever watched one episode falls in love with it.

Thank you for the recap. You captured everything I wanted and needed to hear. But just one thing -- no comments on the wedding dress.....lol

I have been watching FNL on DirecTV, so thanks for the recaps! There are so many good young actors on this show, but my personal favorite has always been Scott Porter. It's so uplifting to see Jason trying to be a responsible father, especially since there are so many dead-beat-dads on this show (Riggins, Saracen, Cash). I know this might be an unpopular opinion, but I would rather watch any storyline with Jason than watch Tim deal with any one of his many lady friends! :-D

It was nice to see Matt smile after all the bad things that have happened to him this year. I hope Matt and Julie stay together for a while, as I don't think there are any other stable couples on the show (besides Eric and Tami). Sorry, I know that a lot of people love Tyra, but I really don't care about any of her storylines. The writing has always been hit-or-miss for her, and I absolutely HATED that Tyra and Landry became a couple because he KILLED SOMEONE (**worst mistake made by the FNL writers**).

Best part of this episode was the expression on Coach Taylor's face when JD walked into the office naked. The Coach didn't have to say anything, just thinking "Not again!" ;-)

Also, I liked how the writers remembered that Landry is still part of Crucifictorious (which I think is a lot easier to pronounce than Stigmatalingus). :-)Realistically, Landry shouldn't have much free time after football practices, but at least they show that he has interests other than football. It was pretty obvious in that scene that Landry has a new love interest.

I knew a *lot* of girls like Tyra when I was young, probably because I was like Landry: perpetually and hopelessly trying to save them from their mistakes and get them to think of me romantically. Last season was unbelievable, but I find Tyra's rollercoaster ride this year very real and very sad.

As for Matt and Julie, in my review here, I said they finally consummated their love off-screen. The flirting and preamble were all there to see, but the rest was out of the spotlight where it belongs. For most people, sex isn't that dramatic, even the first time. You always remember your own first time and it usually feels momentous when it happens, but it's just not a big deal to anyone else. That was the perfect way to cap that two-year long buildup.

I have to vote for more FNL recaps. It seemed to lose it's way a little last season but with the pared down cast it's much tighter this season and it feels like such a fresh take on most topics, avoiding outlandish storylines for the most part. I find it hard to distinguish the actor Kyle Chandler from his role here, it's the part of a lifetime for him. The scene with Matt's grandmother was priceless; she was ready to beat him up and he managed to charm her effortlessly. Definitely happy to see Matt and Julie back together, they have great chemistry, very adorable. Wish we could see more of Smash but I'm just happy to have the show around for another while; I worry that this will be the last season but I'm enjoying every minute of it while I can. Laughed at the honey-do list too and loved the Riggins tour of Dillon!

Please keep up with your blog. It is so difficult to find any sites that actually like FNL. I love this show. Actually I love Kyle Chandler and would watch him standing and reading the phone book. He really gets no respect from Julie and Tammi - that bothers me. Keep up the good work

    more recaps please.
