'Grey's Anatomy': I love you, I always have. Ditto.

Sararamirez5_greysanatomy_240 I'm guest-blogging for two shows tonight and one of them is Grey's Anatomy. I'll be honest... I was head-over-heels for this show when it first started. The writing was strong, the acting was great and the storylines were interesting. It lost me a little with the we-have-no-chemistry-whatsoever-couple of George and Izzie happened. But Mary McDonnell is guest-starring now and she rules the school, so let's see what is happening tonight at Seattle Grace...

We open as Christina crawls in bed with Meredith and McDreamy, delighting in the Wicked Witch Hahn being gone from the hospital. A strange blonde woman knocks on the house door and leaps into bed with Meredith, calling her "Death." Her name is Sadie, Meredith's backpacking partner from before med school. Christina and McDreamy lament in the kitchen about her invasion into their lives.

Seattle Grace. Sadie is there to start her residency. Alex tries to get Izzie to talk to him about the Hahn-Denny thing, but she won't let him in. Inside, she sees Denny's spirit walking about and talking to her. 3 is sent off to plastics by Christina because of her scratched-up arms (Christina suspects her of cutting herself) and Alex informs Christina that he's working on a heart transplant that day.

Dr. Hunt, Callie and Christina wait for some crash victims to arrive at the ER. The victim is a man they had to fish out of a working garbage truck. He is impaled on his own femur. Dear lord. Sadie tries to jump in on the emergency but Christina smacks her down. Dr. Hunt has called in McSteamy to help.

Meanwhile, Bailey is charged with showing Dr. Dixon the ropes. That's Mary McDonnell, being very Rainman. She does heart, she does hearts. Wapner's on at 4:00. Bailey tries to give Dr. Dixon a tour, as she blathers on about the history of heart transplants. They introduce her to the patient, who has a small heart piggy-backed on his own 6 years ago but now needs a new heart. He's Navajo and has been seeing visions of the woman who gave him the piggy-backed heart ever since he got it. Dr. Dixon lays it out for him, saing he'll have a slow, agonizing death if he doesn't go along with the transplant.

Back with Impaled Man. They are going to yank out the femur from his chest. One, two, three, HEAVE! Except the patient wakes up screaming in mid-extraction. Oops. The patient is homeless and says he can't survive if he can't walk, so they have to save his leg. Dr. Hunt says the surgery is off then. McDreamy and McSteamy confront Dr. Hunt about leaving the patient to die. He storms off. McDreamy asks Callie if she can figure out a way to build the homeless man some legs.

She says the right femur is toast but that she can take some bone fragments and hardware and figure something out.

Navajo Heart Guy. He wants his old heart back after the transplant but Rainman Dixon won't hear of it because the rules say the heart must go out as medical waste. Bailey goes to Chief and asks that they specify in the hospital rules that they respect the beliefs of their patient so that they may give him back his heart. This will help the patient and pacify Dr. Dixon. The Chief just declares it a rule. Heh heh.

Christina introduces herself to Dr. Dixon, who dismisses her, so Christina goes to Callie to find out what happened to Dr. Hahn. Callie says they had a fight and subtlely reveals to Christina that Hahn was her girlfriend. Christina has the werewithal to ask if Callie is okay and she says she's fine.

McDreamy guilts Meredith into talking to Lexie about her problems and Meredith VERY subtlely asks if Lexie is a "secret cutter." Smooth, Meredith. Before she can answer, McSteamy asks "Little Grey" if she wants to scrub in on a surgery and she says yes and runs off. In the basement, Lexie submits The Tale of the Secret Cutter to the Secret Intern Societ and says they need to shut down for awhile because people are getting suspicious. Sadie is there and encourages them to keep at it. She demonstrates by taking off her shirt and cutting her own shoulder blade with a scapel, then asking who wants to stitch her up. WOW.

Izzie talks to Navajo Heart Guy about her Denny-spirit sighting, wondering if he is bringing her heart transplant patients.. He then asks her not to be in on his surgery because he doesn't need any extra ghosts in his operating room.

McDreamy and Dr. Hunt talk to Homeless Femur-Stabbed Guy. They tell him that his refusal to have live-saving surgery is not smart and that they need to operate and figure the rest out later.

Surgery. Dr. Dixon is going all ninja on Navajo Heart Guy's transplant. Bailey tells her about respecting the patient's beliefs, stressing that it is a RULE declared by The Chief. Rainman Dixon then instructs Dr. Karev to return the heart to the patient after the surgery. Up in the gallery, Denny talks to Izzie as she tries to ignore him. She tells him that previously she would've given anything to be able to see him again, but now being able to see him and not touch him is killing her. She  worries that she's somehow sick  because he cannot be real. But he insists that she touch him. She won't.

Heart surgery. Navajo Heart Guy's heart is beating on its own after they remove the piggy-back heart. Dr. Dixon starts to freak out and Izzie stands gobsmacked in the gallery. IN recovery, they tell the Navajo Heart Guy that if his heart continues to fuction this way, he won't need a new heart. They say that his heart had 6 years to rest and must have repaired itself. He is relieved not to be haunted by his piggy-backed heart owner's spirit anymore.

Femur-Stabbed Homeless Guy. The reconstruction is going very well. Callie is building a leg from titanium and Lexie is out-pulley stitching McDreamy. The Femur-Stabbed Homeless Guy suddenly starts flatlining and they call time of death. Callie is furious because she built his bones from scratch and all the rest of the team had to do was keep him safe and alive while she made his bones. Christina shooes everyone away while Callie cries. McSteamy hugs her. Nice job there by Sara Ramirez. She's fabulous.

Izzie gives the piggy-back heart to the Navajo Man, who says they will burn it now because the spirit can cling to any part of it that they don't burn. Izzie realizes she still has things of Denny's that his spirit can cling to.

Dr. Dixon goes to leave the hospital and Bailey congratulates her on an excellent job. Dr. Dixon tells her that she likes the regularity and rules of the human heart. She then tells Bailey that she has Asberger's Syndrome, which is a social impairment that she suffers from. She does point out that she CAN recognize when she is being manipulated, which she knows Bailey did with the "rules" business.

McDreamy and McSteamy have a chat about Lexie where McDreamy advises him not to let Little McSteamy anywhere near Little Grey. Snerk.

Izzie says goodbye to Denny's spirit because she's trying to let him go so his soul can be at peace. He says that he IS at peace, but she says goodbye as Alex observes from down the hall.

Locker room. Christina confronts the interns about their Bitch n Stitch circle and tells them to shut it down because practicing on themselves is insane.

At the bar, Callie mopes about Hahn, Christina watches Dr. Hunt and McSteamy gazes lecherously at Little Grey. Christina catches up with Dr. Hunt outside the bar and he yells at her then they kiss passionately but she then walks away. Huh. Back at McDreamy's, he asks for a story from Meredith about med school with Sadie and she obliges.

At home, Alex finds Izzie holding Denny's sweater and she asks him to burn it for her, which they do in the fire place. She then sees Denny again in her bedroom and cannot believe he's still around. He tells her to touch him and she reaches out... and he's solid! She puts her hand on his chest, all Dirty Dancing-like, and they kiss. Um, what? What in the hell is happening here? Where is "Unchained Melody" and the potter's wheel?

Is this a little too soapy for anybody else?

If this show hasn't jumped the shark, I think this show, and in particular, that ending did it for me. I understand it's intent, but there's certain lines you try not to cross in a show like this. The motivation was good, the though and actual execution was a bit iffy, to say the least.

I went from the total STUPIDITY of this episode to the poignancy of ER which I haven't even WATCHED for three years and which gave me goosebumps last night. Guess which one I would pick?

I don't know how much longer I can take Grey's - Callie yearning for a really good mangled body to keep her occupied and the total silliness of Izzie and Denny at the end. It's just too much.

The way Denny kept repeating "I'm here FOR YOU" really freaked me out. I wonder if they are foreshadowing that something is really wrong with Izzy. This would seem to fulfill the rumors that the writers are opening a door for Katherine Heigel to make an exit this season.

Chris | Nov 14, 2008 3:41:04 AM | #

i gotta give kudos to katherine heigl for her superb acting last night. and although i liked denny, can't we just put him to rest already? are they really gonna go towards the "izzie's sick and is simply closer to death because of it?"

i did not enjoy the way they exited hahn's character. it's definitely burke 2.0. do they really believe that they'd leave because of a fight? okay maybe for burke...barely...but for callie? no way. it would've been more believable if she left for other reasons: say the integrity of the hozpital or lack thereof...a report to unos because of izzie's past could add to the storyline...or she transfered back to mercy west. i dunno...something believable.

poor george. he's definitely the izzie of last season, shafted by little to no storyline. we only saw him once!

john t. | Nov 14, 2008 3:53:14 AM | #

If what she's seeing is a ghost, I hate it. If it's actually some sort of psychosis, I love it. Although if Denny is a hallucination, he's a pretty unusual one (visual, auditory AND tactile?). I'm no doctor/psychiatrist, but I don't think that's very realistic.

Ryan M. | Nov 14, 2008 4:55:41 AM | #

I'm a total sucker for Denny... lol. I know that in a show like this there shouldn't be any ghost touching or kissing, but I'm a total sucker for this! Anytime they even mention Denny's name (even in episodes past) I tear up. And then seeing him.... sigh. I know it's stupid, but I love it! lol

Myriam | Nov 14, 2008 4:55:54 AM | #

First I think you want to reference Ghost not Dirty Dancing but I could be wrong.
I think they are setting up the Denny Izzy storyline because there were rumors the writers were going to put her in a coma for a bunch of the season due to a brain tumor. This would fit--she is having hallucinations.
I also did not like how the handled Hahn's exit. What is interesting is the writers had the characters saying what all of us has been saying. What happened to Hahn? She just left with no explanation? Why did she really leave? LOL Funny writers.

I thought last night's episode was the dumbest, most frustrating episode of Grey's ever. It even tops all the Meredith dies episodes. I don't know what to think when Meredith & Derek seem like the 'normal' couple/people on the show. I wouldn't even know where to begin to list all the things wrong/annoying/boring with last night's episode. OTOH, even though it may not be the show it used to be, ER still knows how to keep you glued to the TV. Thankfully I could end the night on a good note with the superb episode they aired last night.

DG | Nov 14, 2008 5:23:08 AM | #

As a devoted fan, I think that this episode may have pushed me over the edge. Izzie is making out with a ghost-seriously? Her character has been completly horrible and needy lately. They need to push her into the background again like last season, or just let her crossover with Denny-good ridance.

concerned | Nov 14, 2008 5:26:37 AM | #

I like Denny rather watch him than George or Alex. MerDer was actually on the show with scenes FINALLY keep it up and don't go back to 24 seconds a show. Good episode!

Anna | Nov 14, 2008 5:44:48 AM | #

Personally, I think the Izzie-Denny thing is a good way to completely break Alex and any potential he has of being a good guy; she promised she wouldn't go crazy and look at her now!

Based on the previews, if GA hasn't jumped the shark yet, it's sure aiming to next week. "Let's do a dirty, can't-be-properly-sedated, unnecessary surgery in the basement." Realistic and AWESOME!

I also agree that saying Hahn left because of Callie is ridiculous. She has every reason to not want to be in a hospital where interns kill people and attendings cover it up and the writers blame it on a parking lot fight???

BTW, it's asperger, not asberger.

Carrie | Nov 14, 2008 6:25:49 AM | #

I admit, it thought of the jumping of the shark too. But, like a poster before...I'm a sucker for any Denny face time. Jeffrey Dean Morgan sucked me into Grey's the first time around and I only have watch it now half way to keep up. Denny will suck me in any day. Even for how unrealistic the storyline is, how great was it to see him again.
On a separate note...Kevin McKidd is doing such a great job. So sexy.

Sharyn | Nov 14, 2008 6:51:05 AM | #

Hahn left because of Izzie stealing Denny's heart and the Chief not DOING anything about it - you know - breaking rules and LAWS?

You sorta have to feel that that much was realistic no matter how messed up everything else was.

I love Denny, too - but the fact that he isn't actually there is sorta screwing everything up.

I agree that it could be because Katherine Heigl has been on bad terms with the powers that be of Greys ever since last year when she pulled herself out of Emmy contention while complaining that she hadn't had any good storylines all year. They could just be tired of all that and they're going to kill her off or something.

Jan | Nov 14, 2008 7:39:45 AM | #

Count me in too. LOVE seeing Denny no matter what. Yeah they could have done a way better job with why Hahn left.I was giving up on GA BUT now HAVE to stick with the Denny story.

Kate2 | Nov 14, 2008 7:44:16 AM | #

I can't believe we've had over a month of shows and Meredith is still happy and fairly sane! Of course now Lexie has lost it, must be something in that 'Grey' gene.

And I still find it funny that Denny has returned from the dead more than the same actor has returned on 'Supernatural'

Also the Native American heart patient was an interesting story. I however believe that if the story was involving a Christian and their beliefs; the staff wouldn't be so supportive.

| Nov 14, 2008 8:42:12 AM | #

I suppose from the previews next week Meredith will get the first solo surgery, whether she wants it or not.

Stitching up small cuts is one thing, but removal of an appendix is nuts.

Wow, Sadie's a new doctor, do all the doctors at seattle grace come from central casting. She could be McSizzle, McHottie, or McCrazy since she did cut herself.

Shark...consider thyself jumped.

Seriously.

Rob L. | Nov 14, 2008 9:22:01 AM | #

I absolutely LOVE Denny (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and the relationship he had with Izzy. I hated seeing him die. Literally. That couple of past episodes made me teary-eyed and I don't do that. It was incredibly well written and acted. Wow!
I love seeing Denny back with Izzy. And while I'm a HUGE fan of Supernatural, UNLESS Izzy is dying or going into a coma or something, I don't believe ghosts belong in Grey's Anatomy.
Having said that, if Izzy IS going into a coma I would LOVE to see her with Denny while she's between both worlds. Now THAT would be a cool sideline. She could even be a "bug" in her co-worker's ears or something. After all, she'll have the "inside scoop".
Did Denny have a Twin brother or a double out there? He's the real McDreamy. Bring him back that way for Izzy. ?

IZZIE HAS A BRAIN TUMOR CAUSING HER TO SEE AND FEEL DENNY.

J | Nov 14, 2008 9:48:24 AM | #

Hey it's sweeps month. So I've come to expect some of this, but seriously?

This was bad.

JC | Nov 14, 2008 10:02:49 AM | #

That works too. :o)

Johanna | Nov 14, 2008 10:03:15 AM | #

I read about that brain tumor thing somewhere a while back. But I thought they had abandoned that particular storyline. Oh well, maybe I'm wrong. But hell, it IS good to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan. LOVE him. He's... how'd Christina put it a few weeks back (although talking about Burke) "He's a MAN." lol. Would also love him on Supernatural. There it would at least make some sense to have a dead guy back ;)

Myriam | Nov 14, 2008 10:04:31 AM | #

Are the writers on crack? What doctor actually believes in ghosts? If she has a brain tumor, she should get a scan, not make out with hallucinations.

About the interns practicing on themselves- interns at other places seem to learn things without mutilating themselves, so what's up with Seattle Grace? And Melissa George slicing her back- what hot woman would give herself a scar?

About the doctor with Asperger's... are with meant to find her funny? That is so not cool. Boston Legal does a stellar job with Jerry, but I don't see the point of this storyline.

I don't like George, but he is getting no screen time. Maybe it's time to pick a few interesting characters rather than keep adding new ones since the old ones have nowhere to go.

AC | Nov 14, 2008 11:04:02 AM | #

Bo:

I referenced them both. When she put her hand on his chest it was like the "ga-gung" scene in Dirty Dancing when he teaches her the beat of the dance they're doing at the Sheldrake.

Andrea | Nov 14, 2008 11:28:37 AM | #

Your all idiots, Denny is the tumor, stop being dumb and act like you watched tv before tonight.
