'Dirty Sexy Money': A Toast to Family

Jillclayburgh_dirtysexymoney_240_2 While Dirty Sexy Money has been handling the "dirty" and the "money" part just fine, the "sexy" part has been lagging a little. Nick's been up on his high marital horse, Jeremy and Nola have been way too gooey, and Tripp has constantly stood by his unfaithful bride. Tonight, DSM finally dove into the deep end of incestuous waters. Everyone was swapping partners to and fro, sneaking dirty little kisses, having torrid sex, and coveting thy neighbor's wife. This is more like it.

These spoilers think your wife is hot.

Letitia's paranoia: Thanks to Jeremy's affair with Nola, Letitia is now a free woman. What better way to celebrate than with one too many mimosas and a fast convertible? Unfortunately for her, she was too busy pretending to be Thelma and/or Louise to notice the girl on a bike. Tripp is already working damage control and brings the girl to the mansion to stay, rather than take her to a hospital. This would be a much easier way to avert the tabloid fodder. Letitia's not buying it. She thinks this girl, Wrenn, is trying to pull a scam. Wrenn assures Nick that she's not planning on suing; she's just enjoying the maid and the thousand thread count sheets. Nick makes her stay for a couple of days to recuperate.

Tripp seems to have taken a liking to this mysterious new girl. It's hard to tell whether it's a parent/child type relationship, or if Tripp has some romantic feelings for a girl half his age. With this show, you never know. She tells him how admirable it was that he stayed with Letitia despite her cheating ways for 40 years. He simply says that she was the woman of his dreams, but thanks her for being so blunt.

Williambaldwin_dirtysexymoney_240 Patrick's decision: Patrick is faced with the big decision of which committee he'll represent now that he's a big bad Senator. Tripp, of course, wants to put him on the road to the White House and recommends foreign affairs. Nola, who is trying to persuade the family that she doesn't hold a grudge, thinks agriculture would be the way to go. It's not as high profile, and the last thing Patrick needs is more attention. Jeremy spots his ex-lover leaving and isn't too keen on the idea of her involvement with Patrick. He also thinks that she's just using Patrick to get to him. Someone's a little conceited, no?

It's hard to have a respectable relationship with your son's chief of staff when it's the same person who tried to convict you of murder. It's good that they're not trying to be civil, because it would all be a lie. Letitia then not-so-subtly spills the beans about her and Jeremy's little plan of seduction, which ruined Nola's law career. And the hustler just got hustled.

Brian's manipulations: Andrea's cancer is getting worse by the day, and it seems chemo won't do much but make her really sick. She doesn't want to spend the rest of her life bed-ridden and refuses treatment. Brian demands that the doctor sign her up for a new experimental trial, but the doctor says there's a 12 month waiting list. Brian, ever resourceful, threatens to take back money the family had donated for a new children's wing unless he gets her in. That's the spirit!

The next day, Brian tells Andrea that he got her on the medical trial. It seems she'd rather continue her homeopathic treatments and refuses. Then the name calling begins, but quickly morphs into a quickie on top of the yoga mat. Is it sad that this is probably the most functional relationship on the show? Later, Andrea decides that she couldn't possibly leave Brian Jr. alone with all these nutcases and agrees to the medical trial.

Peterkrause_dirtysexymoney_240 Nick's fidelity:  Nick tries his best to woo his wife back with a fancy meal, despite two weeks prior asking Karen to leave Simon to be with him. She falls for it and agrees to move back in. She also tells Nick about her interesting conversation with Simon, who offered Lisa a look at the security tapes of Nick and Karen. He's more than a little peeved and goes to Simon's work to threaten him. He kind of fails, though. Simon showed him the video of the conversation Nick had with Karen, and, well, Nick was left without a leg to stand on.

The next morning, Karen's at Nick's office for a "closed-door" meeting. He tells her that he has to try to make things work with Lisa. Karen was more than willing to leave Simon for him, but can't say she was surprised. Nick swears that he'll always love both Karen and Lisa. Well isn't that special. Meanwhile, Lisa calls Nick's office, but Daisy won't put her through. Lisa figures out that Karen is there and is so livid she decides to view that security tape after all. This can't be good for the marriage. Lisa decides to confront her lying hubby at the family dinner and all hell breaks loose. Champagne is thrown, names are called, and accusations are made. Then, just like a "Dear Penthouse Forum" letter, Karen and Lisa were entangled in an all-out cat fight.

The fallout: Wrenn, the relative stranger to everyone here, decides to be a brazen little hussy and flirt shamelessly with Nick. The poor guy is feeling a little insecure after losing both of his loves, but Wrenn's there to pick up the pieces. She also offers up her tongue, which he gladly accepts. Standing in the background watching intently is Tripp, who is either being completely pervy or completely jealous.

Nick's not the only one being adventurous tonight. Lisa's gone ahead and wooed Jeremy back to her art gallery for a little comfort. And by comfort I mean sex. Tripp sees this also. Just kidding… that would be gross.

Patrick thanks Nola for her constant support, unaware that he's being used. Apparently, Simon has forced Nola to recommend the agriculture route for his own bio-fuel plans. How would he go about forcing her, you ask? Simple. He's kidnapped her little brother and is holding him hostage so she does whatever he wants. It's all part of the plan to take over the world. Later, Nick grows some balls and threatens Simon. But hey, Simon offered to give Karen back to Nick when he's done with her. That's kind of sweet of him, right? It's like recycling.

What do you think of Nola suddenly being the good guy? Why is Patrick suddenly so dense? Is Lisa sluttier than she pretends to be? And who else is excited for the return of the missing twin Juliette?

I think it's out of character for Lisa to have sex with Jeremy. She's been more of a moral center than Nick thus far. Yes, she kissed Jeremy when drunk, but she pulled up from going there because she was married. I just don't see her doing this.

And how cliche that the new chick is entered into the show. Sheesh.

alia | Nov 20, 2008 8:04:30 AM | #

this was one of the better episodes though the way the new chick was introduced was ridiculous

That is the beauty of Lucy Liu - able to look like the queen of mean on the outside, but that vulnerable inside. I love her as an actress because it is impossible not to love her characters! I actually think she may be the moral center of this family!

I like Lisa and understand the need for a hook-up after putting up with a husband who loves someone else, too, and telling him to get lost... but they should never put her next to Karen! Karen is approximately the size of Annie on 90210 (I am a size 2, but really, can people be that tiny). Karen is so skinny she makes poor Lisa look fat (NOTE - I am not saying Lisa IS fat, I am saying that Karen is way too skinny!!!) I love Karen but am glad that Lisa clocked her.

Who knew that I would grow to hate Simon when he arrived? He is not only manipulative, he is downright SCARY!

I loved Sarah Carter on Shark, so I am happy that she is here as Wrenn. But definitely think she is not what she seems... I think Letitia has her number (because, really, who on DSM is what they seem to be??) Totally voting for the Tripp affair vs. the Nick thing (I would like to put Nick in a sensory deprivation tank for about a month and then see if he can get his senses back!)

Oh, and Brandon, Patrick isn't suddenly so dense - he is DENSE!!! Your best line in your re-cap... "Tripp sees this also. Just kidding… that would be gross." LMAO!!!

Can they really just swap all of their partners like this? Rich people are wack.

I liked Jeremy/Lisa flirting and drunk earlier last season, but the "sex" last night just seemed so...contrived (and plus there was something a bit unsightly about Lisa's legs in the air shot). I like Brian jr., but am still wondering about Brian's wife 1 and daughters, and Wrenn might be interesting but why is she there as a "daughter" character when they are bringing Julliett back. We'll see if the writers can figure out why Julliet and Wrenn are there this season, since they didn't know what to do with Juliett last time around.

i love this show. but really, it was missing an essential tv show staple, the pretty young blonde, without which no show can function. sheesh.

I think that this Wrenn girl is a weird stalker of Nick's. Just the way she asked him if he ever thought there was anyone other than Karen or Lisa just made me think that she is someone from his past that he obviously doesn't remember. Even if I am wrong there is something off about her and the way Tripp took to her is just creepy.

I was hoping, actually, that this would mean Lisa is off the show. Guess not. I have not liked the character at all from day one. Just something about the actress that really bugs me.

Lisa to Karen:

I'd kick your ass if I could find it.

I was so glad that Laura Palmer, I mean Andrea realized that you have to fight to stay alive when you have a child to depend on you. It changes everything that you might have thought about dignity and treatment when confronted by a life-threatening disease.

I don't think Juliette coming back adds anything to the show. I haven't missed her since she left.

Lisa I wish would just go away. She's a decent actress and all but I find her in general unlikable and her stunt with Jeremy last night (my exact words were "OMG what a slut!") was just ridiculous.

I think Nola would be wise to give Patty and Tripp a heads up on whats going on. They are Darlings and have all sorts of money, they can probably buy him back. I see Patty winning her over eventually too; that "denseness" makes him more likable even to her.

I love the show!

I thought it was pretty clear that Tripp's feelings for Wrenn were more than paternal. At the end of the episode, by the elevator, he told Nick that Wrenn made him consider the possibility that Trish might not be the woman of his dreams. He seemed to have said this as a way to discourage Nick to start anything with Wrenn (after he saw her kissing him).

Eric | Nov 20, 2008 1:31:32 PM | #

Patrick *may* be behaving more dense-like, but I prefer that character to be occasionally dense over just plain stupid and immature as he was throughout his wife vs. Carmelita storyline. That was just unbelievable.

I can excuse a former attorney general and now senator of NY being a little 'out of touch' over one that behaves as if he's a dumb, spoiled teenager.

Dan | Nov 20, 2008 1:44:09 PM | #

PS - I haven't missed the Juliette character at all.

As J noted above, the writers didn't know what to do with her the first time around.

I think more than meets the eye is up with Wrenn, but then again I don't know how she could of got hit on purpose.

Also I think it was totally out of character for Lisa to sleep with Jeremy. As much as she hates the Darling family..she could have found someone else to have a quicky with and you know what is probably coming. She will get knocked up and not know who the father is and claim it is Nick and it will probably be Jeremy's. I hope they don;t go there, but I can see it happening.

RIP DSM

Jen | Nov 20, 2008 8:04:05 PM | #

Boffing Jeremy is too big a plunge from grace for Lisa!

And did anyone else feel that Wrenn was a tad too knowledgable about Darling family matters?

Dean Speir | Nov 21, 2008 12:37:36 PM | #

Put it on FX!!!!

to heck with ABC!

TOM SYKES | Nov 22, 2008 2:49:42 PM | #

Although not as hyped as I am about other shows, I was a fan of DSM. But now I read that ABC has "failed to renew" it for this year. Without saying cancelled, it looks like that is what will happen. I am surprised, Brandon. Didn't you hear this or mention it? Anyway, as with other episodic shows, will this be left up in the air or will the writers be able to tie the 173 loose ends together before we lose the Darlings forever?
I see no benefit of Juliet's character but the writing has been so intriguing that I will watch with interest, if not anticipation.
I have never like Lucy Liu's character in anything I have seen her in, this being no exception. But like the ever-diminishing Heroes, I find it increasingly difficult to remember who is good and who is bad. Too many characters can't seem to choose a side.
And even for a soap, a couple of plot lines don't hold true for me---the idea that Nola's brother (where are her parents?) is HAPPY in his gilded cage even though kidnapped (calling Simon by his first name? WTF?)and Lisa "deciding" to have a "tonight" moment of weakness with the still-vulnerable (and too altogether emotionally-stable) Jeremy. There are few scenarios where this ends well, methinks.
Let's see, eh?

Lou | Nov 22, 2008 11:22:20 PM | #

damn lack of edits....
I have never LIKED Lucy Liu's characters....
and
the emotionally-UNSTABLE Jeremy.
Sheesh.
Hey, I am three days behind in my viewing and it's after 2AM on Grey Cup Sunday. Give me a break!

Lou | Nov 22, 2008 11:25:00 PM | #

The reason (to be blunt) Lisa picked Jeremy was simple~"You (Nick) fuck one Darling, then I will just fuck the other." Quid pro quo in her mind. That's why it wasn't particularly sexy; (however, she DID enjoy Jeremy's company when Nick was late for their dinner date and he showed up first instead. AND he did 'help' her get the art gallery. One may feel beholden to someone so 'there' for her.) Otherwise, it was simply 'payback' time.

The Darlings don't do things without a reason, so I am very curious as to how Wrenn was positioned to be hit by Leticia, unless she was already waiting there and Tripp called her as soon as Leticia left on her first legal outing. Maybe he even plied her with some drinks beforehand.

I find myself not liking Wrenn at all. There is indeed something stalker-crazy about her. Maybe she was waiting for NICK to arrive and figured an 'accident' could work to her advantage. Nick wasn't all gung-ho-ey on her. He sort of stood there and 'took it.' Me thinks he's being set up, too. (Simon's doing? Or Nola's, to get back at Leticia and Jeremy's duplicity.)

I am chagrined and bereft that DSM is not being renewed! Peter Krause is excellent in every show he is in, starting with Sports Night and continuing with 'Six Feet Under' through DSM. This is the kind of show that would benefit from being a cable show; imagine the language and risque moments that would add extra flavor to each character! Donald Sutherland and Jill Clayburgh are just masters of what they do! I like Brian, because he's fiery. Karen is spoiled but somehow likable, too.

Simon is like a black panther, just waiting to pounce.Everyone is good in their parts. I shall miss DSM and hope there is a fabulous ending in there somewhere.
