'Desperate Housewives': Lily Tomlin!
Many thanks to Tamara for covering last week's eventful installment of Desperate Housewives. Tonight's episode kept the action moving right along, with several more jaw-dropping reveals. Plus, you know, Lily Tomlin! With Katherine Joosten! My life is finally complete.
Lynette: Lynette accuses Tom of cheating. A comical misunderstanding ensues, but is rapidly replaced by less-comical horror when all parties realize that Porter is sleeping with his best friend’s mom. Yeah, EW. Porter claims to love her, and agrees to end it but threatens to move out if they tell Ann’s “psycho” husband. In the bathroom at a PTA meeting, Lynette finally loses her cool (after holding it for an admirable time) and shoves Ann into the wall, slapping and threatening her after Ann claims to love Porter. Again, given the situation, I'm going to say Lynette is showing admirable restraint here.
Later, Ann meets Porter secretly, tearfully telling him that she’s pregnant. WHAT!??! She calls him later, saying that she can leave town Saturday and making sure he has “the money.” After getting off the phone with Ann, Porter tells Lynette that he appreciates everything she and Tom have done for him. Lynette clearly is too relieved to realize how unlike him that is. Because seriously, Preston saying something thoughtful? SO out of character.
Gabby: Gabby and Carlos relax by the pool at Mrs. Hildebrand’s, where Gabby wants to stay the weekend as invited. Carlos resists, not wanting to mix business with pleasure, before being browbeaten into it. Mrs. Hildebrand rapidly gets a little too cozy even for Gabby, forcibly inserting herself into their family movie night by climbing into bed with Gabby and Carlos. And then giving the kids a room in her house and having them call her Grandma. Wow.
Gabby immediately wants to bail, but Carlos says they need the $100,000 from the Europe trip, and Mrs. Hildebrand has too much influence at the country club. So basically, Gabby and Carlos are taking turns being whores. They go home with an excuse about Celia’s birthday party, but Mrs. Hildebrand shows up at the party herself. Gabby tells her to knock it off, calling her creepy and saying it’s like she’s trying to buy them. Unfortunately, to the watching party guests, it looks like Gabby is just yelling at a generous old lady. An old lady who then claims to the country club that Carlos is molesting her and gets him fired. Oops.
Bree: Orson and Bree fire their employee, Charlie, for stealing $200 from petty cash to buy pot. Orson hires a girl with strong references to replace him, and Bree’s cookbook gets a great review in a Christian magazine. These two happenings are hot enough, apparently, to induce Orson and Bree to do it in the catering kitchen. And, of course, Charlie winds up with the surveillance tape (stealing it to deny them proof of his guilt, and getting an added bonus). The scene in which Andrew explains this to them is priceless. Shawn Pyfrom really needs more to do on this show.
Rather than pay the blackmail, Bree tries to get Andrew to steal the tape back. He gets the tape, but it’s not Orson and Bree at all – IT’S MIKE AND KATHERINE! Not like we didn't all see it coming, but still! Bree returns the tape to a giggly Katherine, and suggests that Katherine tell Susan about her relationship with Mike. Katherine’s having the time of her life, though, and doesn’t want to ruin it with being a good friend. Fair enough?
Susan: For Susan's part, Susan and Jackson go out on a “first” date, complete with no sex afterward. Or on the next date. Or the one after that. Jackson doesn’t love the no sex thing, but gets on board with “getting to know each other,” confessing to Susan that he loves to paint art, but hasn’t been able to create anything new in a year. This situation leads to a rapid realization that celibacy helps him paint. So much so that even when confronted with Susan in a corset, he demurs. Maybe if she had worn that red number Bree wore in the first season... Jackson's painting, of course, is of Susan, and proves to her that he really knows her. I gotta say, this plotline didn't really do anything for me.
Dave: Dave has signed the guys up for a Battle of the Bands in a week, using one of Edie’s connections to get them in without auditioning. The only problem: they need an original song. Orson hilariously shoots Tom down when Tom claims to know a little about songwriting. Aww. Dave decides to work on the song with Mike that evening, but Mike claims to have plans (Katherine!). Dave gets all creepily interested, asking what her name is, and then talking about Susan and Jackson. And then he’s all, “just so long as you’re having fun...” It’s creepy to the extreme.
Roberta ferrets out from Dave’s phone records that he has a psychiatrist in Boston whom he contacts once a month – a psychiatrist specializing in treating the criminally insane. Never mind that that's not really a psychiatric term so much as a legal one. Roberta and Karen call the psychiatrist to try and get info out of him and the psychiatrist quickly shuts them down, but is clearly stunned to hear that Dave is in Fairview. So much so that he books the next flight out there. Dum dum duuuuuummmm!
What do you think about Mike and Katherine's new relationship? Who's worse in this situation - Gabby, or Carlos? Could Dave be any creepier?
I think Dave's psychiatrist is not long for this world. Dave is going to do him in before he can reveal Dave's secret.
Because we know Mike is going to end up with Susan, (Mark Cherry promised this a long time ago), any suspence they try to introduce by having them with other people doesn't really work.
Mike's role has been to stabilize and ground flighty Susan. Katherine doesn't need him to ground her; I'd like to see her with someone a bit more exciting.
Also Susan's beau, Jackson, doesn't seem convincingly heterosexual to me. I think it's the haircut. He does not have a straight male haircut.
good episode. susan's storyline also did nothing for me. which is a shame because i'm one of the few who like her character.
i liked it when lynette went all UFC on ann. i don't think she's pregnant. she's probably using that excuse just to be with porter, giving him the guilt trip and all.
i saw the old lady molestation complaint a mile away. it was bound to happen. she does give me the piss jitters. it'll be interesting to see what her ulterior motive is. is she just that psychotic? which is why she's estranged to her family?
katherine and mike? not complaining, but i'll always be a mike and susan shipper. it'll happen eventually.
i feel that dave's mystery is being handled really well. it's set at a nice pace. i do hope though it's not too drastic or over the top (like season 2's ridiculous applewhite mystery).
john t. | Nov 9, 2008 10:23:22 PM | #Porter has an identical twin brother, and another brother close in age. Where are they while all this is going on?
I wondered how much money he has, and where he got it. Whether there might be a possible connection with the kitchen employee who stole from Bree (perhaps Porter is his supplier since he alluded darkly to other things his parents didn't know about).
Is this the first time that we've heard the town name? Wisteria is in the "Eagle State", but I don't think there has been a previous reference to Fairview.
Dave... I agree that the pace is good, story-wise. However, it's difficult to see a payoff for Dave (revenge or otherwise) that would require such a slow, complicated build-up.
Maureen | Nov 9, 2008 11:08:08 PM | #I just figured Porter stole from the pizza place.
Will | Nov 10, 2008 12:37:17 AM | #Oh, Gaby, Gaby, Gaby. Way to ruin what was getting to be a pretty hilarious storyline. You don't diss a creepy rich lady like that! And not after you've been whoring yourself at her like that. I can forgive her for being greedy, but for being super stupid? I was liking this storyline so much too.
Lynette's storyline took a turn for the better this episode, climaxing with Lynette beating up on the pedophile chick. Then of course, it took a nosedive for the worse with the oh so played out pregnant woman and Porter running away. Nobody cares.
Bree made me really mad today. She is such a horrible mother. She is screwing Andrew up so bad. She definitely needs to get punished for that. Telling him to do whatever it takes to get the tape back, even when she know's he WOULD do whatever it takes! And then not wanting to know about it. What a hypocrit!
I'm gonna be the first one to admit that I'm not that crazy about the Mrs. Mcklusky and Lily Tomlin storyline.
Katherine and Mike, meh.
I don't think I even need to comment on the Susan storyline. I'd be demanding better storylines if I were Teri Hatcher.
eahilbert | Nov 10, 2008 1:27:02 AM | #What a great episode last night! Def a lot of shocking news!!!! I thought the most interesting twist is the sex tape where you think it was Bree and Orson and turns out to be Katherine and Mike!
Im def a Susan/Mike fan and would love to see them back toghether...AGAIN!
Wasnt interested in Susan's storyline...anything that has to do w/ her new boyfriend, whom I cannot stand, pushes me away.
Curious to know...why is ppl so curious to know where the other Scavo kids are? Who cares....do they need to be in EVERY episode.
Danielle | Nov 10, 2008 6:31:54 AM | #LOL at previous comment. What the heck is a 'straight guy haircut'?????
OK..did anyone else not catch that Dave Williams is NOT his name???
When Roberta called the shrink he did not know who she was talking about until she said 'Fairview' prompting him to book a flight.
the last scene when he does book the flight they show Dave's file and the name Dave Williams is nowhere to be found!!
Manny | Nov 10, 2008 10:00:06 AM | #An OK episode...some of the stuff worked for me, some didn't. The Rundown:
Susan: If I was not watching this on abc.com I would have fast-forwarded through this. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Haven't we suffered enough with the romantic-comedy life of Susan the first four seasons? Please give Teri Hatcher something else to do! It was so much better when Susan had Julie to play off of.
Lynette: I don't think Ann is pregnant for a second. I also think Lynette was a little restrained during her smackdown with Ann. I was waiting for her to really beat the hell out of her. Although the theory about Porter selling Mary Jane is interesting because I don't think that one scene where we saw Charlie was just a throwaway scene. Maybe there is a connection.
Dave: I didn't think he was any creepier than usual this week. Although the big "mystery" didn't really move along. I hope Lily Tomlin gets a bigger role. Its no fun when the characters find out stuff we already know (Dave being criminally insane)...give us some stuff we don't know yet! Also, where in the world is Edie?
Gaby: Who didn;t see this one coming? Perhaps they will delve into more about why Mrs. Hildebrand is so estranged? Maybe there is a Dave connection here.
Bree: I really wish that Andrew had more to do other than one scene per ep. Give Bob and Lee some marital discord and have one of them turn to Andrew. Have Andrew hook up with Charlie...anything, really.
Sometimes I think this show had so many characters that its hard to give everyone the airtime they need. Perhaps some pruning is in order. We also did not have a scene with the principal housewives together..which is also kinda weird, The episode seemed very compartmentalized.
dJintheATL | Nov 10, 2008 10:33:51 AM | #What struck me as funny, was thepsychiatrist actually "booking a flight" on the phone, like in an old movie!...I guess they couldn't show him loggin on to Expedia.com or Obitz!
Katie | Nov 10, 2008 10:50:12 AM | #How funny was Susan's line? im tipesy, im horny, im easier then a 5 year old homework! LOL
jp313131 | Nov 10, 2008 11:11:28 AM | #The Porter \ Ann affair is awfully reminiscent of Gaby and John when the series began. If I recall correctly, Gaby told John that Carlos was violent.
The money aspect is really puzzling. Ann is a realtor. Porter is 16. Has the housing market become THAT bad?
Maureen | Nov 10, 2008 12:10:42 PM | #Since Dave Williams is not his real name that blows my theroy about him being related to Bree's ex, George the pharmisist. I'm sure it will be that Mike killed his brother in prison (self defense of course) and he's out for revenge.
Lisa | Nov 10, 2008 12:26:12 PM | #Manny, thanks for raising that question! Hmmm ... straight guy haircut ... whatever!
Yes, Andrew needs more to do ... as does my personal idol, Lily Tomlin!
I didn't notice the name thing on Dave's file and didn't notice that his doctor didn't recognize the name (I thought he was just being careful/discreet).
Best line was when Bree told Orson to shut up and let Andrew do his thing! lol And Tom is still the biggest wuss ever in the history of husbands. I love Lynette's mama cat personality - too good. And will they let Gaby be pretty again? Really? She is not Gaby - would Gaby really care if some old geezer was creepy??
Michelle | Nov 10, 2008 12:29:22 PM | #dJintheATL: the more i think about it, i think there may be a connection between mrs. hildebrand and dave. she does mention her nephew a few times...and the fact that dave and carlos are similar in size.
john t. | Nov 10, 2008 12:39:58 PM | #I like Susan & Jackson. She needs someone to be with in the now and not have to be concerned with planning a future with. The thing that I like about Jackson is that besides being hot he has captured Susan's personality.
Bree was right- Katherine needs to let Susan know about her & Mike, even though she is with Jackson. Susan will find out at a bad time like in front of Bree, Gabby, Lynette, Edie, everyone else she knows, & Jackson who will get hurt by Susan's reaction.
What was Gabby thinking about ticking off a good deal?
You go Lynette!
To dJintheATL: <> That is a brilliant idea!
Carly | Nov 10, 2008 12:52:39 PM | #Hmmm, so Bree frowns upon Andrew when it comes to hit and run but is totally OK when it comes to pimping him out to get her home repairs done and criminal activities when it comes to stealing her sex tape back. Gotta love her! The scene where he told them about the video was too funny. I definitely think we need to see more of Andrew on the show.
Snoozan, whoops! I meant Susan is still such a bore. I think I might have found her amusing the first season, but as she's still the same flighty ditz since then I have grown totally bored.
It was great seeing Mrs Landingham and Debbie, er, I mean Karen and Roberta together. McClusky just wasn't born to be covert when it comes to finding out things, was she?
Dave is creepy. Then again, I've always found that actor creepy. He does a good job at it. It'll be interesting to see who exactly he's out to get revenge on considering Mike, Carlos and Orsen have done jail time.
As for the Porter thing, other than him being a teen involved with an older married woman, it doesn't ring all that much of John and Gabby. Gabby and John were funny, Porter and Ann are kind of creepy. I don't think she's pregnant. I do think she's using him for something. Maybe setting it up so he kills her husband for her or something like that. Interesting about the money. I wonder where he got it.
jen | Nov 10, 2008 3:24:58 PM | #I can't imagine Dave seeking to get revenge on Carlos for having killed his brother while incarcerated considering Carlos' imprisonment was for a white collar crime and Carlos would not have served time in prison such as the one that Dave's brother supposedly served; therefore the brother and Carlos' paths would not have crossed. Carlos was an executive in mergers and acquisitions when DH started and he seemed to be pretty well off if not living a pretty lavish life style. He took a plea bargain and served time. As for Orson, I guess he served some prison time for his hit and run of Mike. Just trying to see how Orson's and Dave's brother's paths might have crossed in prison; certainly not Carlos'.
Christopher in ATL | Nov 10, 2008 4:52:02 PM | #I've read that Mike dies in the fire next week. Good. I've been able to stand his boring ass.
I'm sick to death of Lynette and her constant nagging and snarling. She's like a dog. And looks like one too these past couple of seasons.
Crystal Diane Stevens | Nov 10, 2008 6:56:37 PM | #Wow, both of Jed Bartlet's secretaries in one episode!
MM | Nov 10, 2008 11:20:25 PM | #Jen, you are correct when you mention Andrew's hit and run. It seems like people forgot about that, including Bree! I forgot how she said it, but she made it sound like he's such a good boy and wouldn't do anything bad to anybody. I guess hit and runs don't count.
Mike | Nov 11, 2008 10:06:38 AM | #Regarding Bree, uh OK. But still:
Orson: A few ground rules, like no arson, no violence.
Bree: Now Orson, let's not inhibit the boy.
Michael | Nov 11, 2008 11:53:32 AM | #Lots of ex-con husbands on this show (Mike, Carlos, Orson, possibly Dave). It's Mike who killed someone in prison, out of self-defence.
