Week 5 results on 'Dancing with the Stars'
Oh, Dancing with the Stars. What am I to do with you. You managed to deliver one of the least painful results show yet but...well, you did not end like you should've.
Spoilers
As they go through the first round of recaps, in addition to the couples' reactions, they inserted some clips of the judges justifying their scores in some cases and just explaining themselves overall.
So...Michael Flatley, Lord of the Dance, will be the guest judge replacing Len. Wow. I don't know what to say about that. Anyhoo, Cody Linley & Julianne get the encore tonight - I agree with the decision. Even though the scored Brooke all crazy, I have no real desire to see their Jitterbug again.
The hype meter for tonight's Macy's Stars of Dance segment is already set on "major." Apparently it is the huge.
Back from a break, the Brian Setzer Orchestra (all donning leopard print jackets) performs "Rock This Town" while Louis Van Amstel & Karina do the Jive. I love big bands. Twas fantastico.
We get our leader board recap while Brian Setzer and company vacates and the couples take the stage. Revealed in no particular order, the first two couples saved are Warren Sapp & Kym and Cloris Leachman & Corky. Ugh. Not that I don't like Cloris, I'm just saying.
Back from the break, we get our kid couples. Anthony & Alisa (12 and 11) have only been dancing together for a year and a half. They do a Jive to "Fun, Fun Fun" by The Beach Boys. Anthony's a little stronger (his kicks had more snap) than Alisa in this dance but they're still very good.
Mitchell & Maria (12 and 13) won nationals in 2007 but are really serious about winning this competition. They're no joke. They do a Paso Doble that was crazy good. I'm most impressed by a close turning section - they kept their spacing very well. After barely surviving an interview with Samantha, Mitchell & Maria are named the winners in a split decision. As always.
Artistic directors/choreographers Rich & Tone (who've worked with people like Madonna and Jennifer Lopez). Their concept is "Dancing through the Decades" and hits the 30's, 80's and the future among others. There's crazy amounts of costumes, set pieces, and dancers. They had to completely reconfigure the stage.
And so it begins. The 30's piece definitely has the Nicholas Brothers vibe they were going for, complete with jumping off levels of the stage. The 60's are next. Oh yes, it's James Brown themed. Get some. The lead has a great pompadour. There have freerunners kick off the 80's breakdancing segment which also has two dueling breakers. Next is The Future, complete with robotic costume pieces to "Universal Mind Control" by Common. This is by far the coolest segment I've ever seen on the show. I wish I had more hands so I could give it four thumbs up.
Our next bit of filler is the stars talking about which of their fellow celebs have been surprising them. With some bits of scripted smack talking. Two more safe couples, in no particular order, are Cody & Julianne and Maurice Greene & Cheryl.
Back from our (hopefully) final commercial break, we're down to the final four. Brooke Burke & Derek are safe, no surprise there, but the first couple in the bottom two are Toni Braxton & Alec. Lance Bass & Lacey are safe too leaving Susan Lucci & Tony also on the cusp of elimination.
Unfortunately, it's Toni's time to go. But she's appreciative of her time on the show and has met her goal of improving her health. She takes it surprisingly well, as does Alec, though they're both sad. The band plays "Take the Long Way Home" by Supertramp for their farewell dance.
So Cloris has survived yet another week thanks in part to mercy scoring from the judges. I love the woman but I can't see her handling the three dances next week (two couple, one group) very well...
I can hear your boos and gasps of horror from here. Let's have it then. Do you agree with the results tonight? Wasn't that dance segment fantastic? Any other thoughts?
I was watching HOUSE!
Gotta have me some Hugh Laurie!
I was watching Priviledged instead.
Glad Toni went home, but I would have been thrilled if it had been Cloris instead.
Ashley | Oct 21, 2008 8:35:50 PM | #oops. Spelled "Privileged" wrong. :)
Ashley | Oct 21, 2008 8:36:26 PM | #So what makes you think Cloris won't make it through the three dances next week???
Check out her resume. . .it seems she's done pretty well making things happen up to this point. VOTE FOR CLORIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm sick of the "stunt" casting. No more Cloris, Master P, Heather Mills, Marlee Matlin (although the last 2 WERE pretty good) et al next season. This show doesn't need a "hook" to get people to watch - just get good celebs who have some shot at actually competing.
Mimi | Oct 21, 2008 9:50:45 PM | #Muffet - I believe she'll have problems because it's hard enough for her to learn one dance let alone three. And yes, that can be said of all the celebs but not in the same way.
Tamara B. | Oct 21, 2008 9:52:42 PM | #In addition, I think Cloris was brought on this year because Susan Lucci balked at being the oldest woman yet to compete on the show. Bad for her ego...and as All My Children is also an ABC show...the network complied.
Mimi | Oct 21, 2008 9:53:21 PM | #Mimi - Master P was an aberration. His son, at that point I think still going by Lil Romeo, was supposed to do it but couldn't because of some other reason. That was pretty terrible. Frankenstein would've done better.
Tamara B. | Oct 21, 2008 9:54:30 PM | #You're right, Tamara. And I felt so sorry for his partner, Ashly. That poor girl was so sincere and danced her butt off around him each week - even bought him new shoes - which he was mighty ungrateful for.
Mimi | Oct 21, 2008 10:00:24 PM | #"...the judges justifying their scores in some cases and just explaining themselves overall."
yeah because the judges know their scoring this season hasn't been based on the dancing. the scoring this season has been really extra shady! the show knows it owes some explanations, it can smell the fans mistrust at this point.
i could care less about dancing thru the decades. and toni did nothing for me, so i didn't mind seeing her go (kinda glad actually). but still want cloris to go asap.
the kids were good tonight. didn't feel creepy like it sometimes does.
I don't think Toni would have won, so when she went really isn't that big a deal, but she was better than Cloris and Susan for sure. For some reason, I don't think Susan will take her eventual exit all that well. I wonder if Toni's exit this week was some kind of notice to the judges for picking on Lance and Lacey (b/c Alex/Toni were in "head-to-head" comp w/ them). I do think the judges overall have underscored L/L this season, though yes, Lacey's pushing their "rebel" status a bit. She needs to focus on winning, not putting her "flavor" into everything. Lance is doing as well as Joey Fatone was IMO and the judges fawned all over him. After Cloris, Susan, and Maurice go, then the real competition can begin. I don't know why, but Brooke's dancing doesn't do much for me; she doesn't "emote" well.
J | Oct 22, 2008 1:56:31 AM | #this is the last straw...who wants to cloris to be voted off next week!!...don't vote for cloris next week...period
the competition needs to get serious...michael flatey as a guest judge...it will be interesting to see how he rates the remaining dancers...don't vote for cloris next week!!!...the dance number last night was huge and all that!!!
I really feel that it is high time that Cloris went home. I respect that she has actually tried to perform the dances for the last 2 weeks, but her antics and camera-hogging are inexcusable. To not even allow those little kids to have their moment with the mike without stealing their scene was disgusting behavior. I guess she's missed the limelight, but it really isn't fun anymore.
Lance and Lacey are being underscored. I'd like to see them in the final 3 with Warren and Kim and Brooke and Derek.
romana118 | Oct 22, 2008 7:00:46 AM | #I agree with Mimi about stunt casting! Just get us celebs that are really trying and can improve. This is the first season of DWTS that I don't religiously watch. I surf and watch the dancers I think are actually improving and then get who leaves from this recap. Why waste my time on antics? I think the viewing percentage will drop this season.
Alia | Oct 22, 2008 7:12:35 AM | #Wow. Cloris "Leech"-man is really annoying. Why did she have to interrupt the kids' interview? Does she need that much attention. Very disturbing. Samantha can't interview even when she isn't distracted. Let alone when a senile old woman is stalking the kids.
I'd rather watch paint dry that this train wreck. It's too bad. There are so many talented dancers (pros and celebrities) to enjoy.
Mickey66 | Oct 22, 2008 7:33:54 AM | #I admire Cloris and her stamina, but come on this is supposed to be a competion not make a senior feel good, she is no competion for the rest of the dancrs.. I resent the show using her to gain veiwers, and give their sympathy votes to Cloris. I also don'f find it entertaining that she wanders and wastes time for other dancers and their critic. I was especially disgusted with how rude she was buting in on the kids interview..I liked her in her shows but definitely it is time for her to go.. Next seson PLEASE don't stray from the original intent ofthe program!!!!
Not sorry Toni left, hopefully
Susan, Maurice & Cloris soon!
Am I the only one that finds the two youngest doing a jitterbug funny? The only one born when the jitterbug was popular was Cloris. If this is ballroom dancing, then let's stick with ballroom
we don't need gimmicks! No jitterbug on earth could ever compare to Louie & Karina's jive! That was WONDERFUL!
I am glad others were as disgusted as I was by the master P's....there are enough others in the wings that would like to be on you don't need gimmicks. Wednesday nights the first hour is wasted, you already stretch out the second hour so much now it could really be a half hour show.
Is anyone else out there grossed out and offended by Corky's obscene hip gyrations and the way he puts his hands all over Cloris? It seems to be happening more and more in their dances--this week was way over the line of "dancing."
Stacie | Oct 22, 2008 8:51:19 AM | #Yes, Stacie, the way that Corky man-handles an 82-year-old woman horrifies me weekly. However, I think inappropriately touching any woman, gimmick or otherwise, is not entertaining and it certainly isn't dancing. It is just so offensive! I just grit my teeth and do something else when they are dancing. This week with his hip gyrations, grabbing her breasts and his maniacal facial expresseions - I just truly cannot imagine who is voting for this carnage.
romana118 | Oct 22, 2008 10:24:22 AM | #How would Cloris feel if her great grandchildren had been the ones on tv and someone had interrupted them?
I hope that the man from Lord of the Dance will be a fair judge. It will be interesting to hear what he has to say.
I don't think that Susan would take it badly if she had to leave.
I liked that Cody and Julianne were the ones picked for the encore dance. He really seems to be improving.
Penny | Oct 22, 2008 10:34:27 AM | #I was so aggravated to see Cloris butting in on the kid's interviews last night. A mature adult might could handle it, but kids? Come on, Cloris! Give them a break! I admire her for doing as well as she has done, but it's time for her "comedic turn" to go home!
Sue | Oct 22, 2008 10:36:49 AM | #Stacie and ramona 118, I totally agree with both of you. I get embarrassed for Corky every week.
Cloris has got to go, her behavior is inexcusable. She should be ashamed of herself for interrupting the young dancers during their interview. Carrie Ann should also be ashamed for encouraging Cloris's disgusting behavior. Please, people who are voting for her, STOP doing so.
I am confused by the decisions the PTB are making this season. Are they begging to be cancelled? If you're tired of this job let someone else take over. I want to continue to watch stars who are serious about dancing.
Trupen | Oct 22, 2008 10:56:53 AM | #Cloris, what a terrible example you are teaching your grandchildren. Shame shame shame on you.
Jen | Oct 22, 2008 10:59:43 AM | #Cloris needed to go, not Toni.
Poor Julianne having do to an encore with a stomach ache.
Corky is annoying me. He's hammy and his facial expressions are obnoxious. Monday's dance was inappropriate.
Very interested to see how Michael Flatley will judge.
I got really confused on The Stars of Dance segment celebrating Macy's 150th birthday. Where were all of the dances performed? The first beginning and the last dances were at the "Dancing with the Stars" ballroom. The dances in between looked like it was being filmed at a different location and was pre-taped.
Carly | Oct 22, 2008 12:52:09 PM | #i think that Cloris needs 2 go. i always hate that people get cut but thats the show! that chef needs to go first though!!!!!!!!!!!!
