Week 3 results on 'Dancing with the Stars'
After an uneven performance show and some heartbreaking news regarding Misty May-Treanor's exit due to injury, Dancing with the Stars sets forth to kill a lot of time and possibly eliminate someone. Though I doubt it.
Spoilers
After the recap from last night, instead of an encore the show kicks off with Maks performing the Jive they were supposed to do with Edyta and dedicates it to Misty (via Tom Bergeron). Oh, and Misty had her surgery today and is apparently doing well.
Revealed in no particular order, Brooke Burke & Derek are safe as are...Cloris Leachman & Corky. Wow. Huh. Those senior citizens must really be picking up their phones. I'd say I smell doom
Ah commercials. As a tie-in to the premiere of Life on Mars, apparently ABC is "celebrating the 70's" with a medly performance by Kool & The Gang. They start out with "Jungle Boogie" and it doesn't seem like they're playing life for some weird reason. Instead of just two pro dancers, there's a total of six - three women and three men. "Ladies Night" is the next song and it still seems that they're not playing live. I feel like I'm watching Soul Train or Solid Gold. And of course they end with "Celebration."
Next up is a package in which the celebs talk about the skills and attributes they have that help them in the competition. Susan "Viva La" Lucci mentions that she's been doing Pilates for 12 years and that helps her keep the postures in the dance. Very interesting. Pilates is the ish. After said package, Maurice Greene & Cheryl are let off the hook.
Post-commercials, we get the Macy's Stars of Dance performance from the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes. I appreciate how they've maintained an Old Hollywood/Classic Broadway sensibility all the years yet don't seem dated. I kind of feel like I'm watching Annie. "Let's go to the moviiiiies..." Good times.
Our next special guest is Oscar Winner Jennifer Hudson performing a remix of her single "Spotlight." I love her haircut and outfit and she sounded great of course. The dynamic brother/sister duo of Derek and Julianne dance (though I kind of think Julianne stole her costume from Edyta).
Our next bit of filler is a package about creating different numbers for the show and some of the trials and tribulations that come with working with novices. Choreographers extraordinaire Brian Friedman, Dave Scott, and Travis Payne offer insight. It's more interesting than usual to me because I find anything where knowledgeable people talk about the inner workings of art fascinating.
After even more commercials, Tom points out the spot on the floor that Derek has come to call "The Bermuda Triangle" - it's where Misty, Derek, and Karina all suffered injuries. Apparently, Derek hurt himself yesterday too. Good gravy! Get a priest, a rabbi and a monk over there, stat. This serves as a segue into a "everyone gets hurt all the time" package. Terrible. They showed Susan post rolling her ankle and Derek who got hurt two days before the show. And why did they show Misty hurting herself again?!? Yargh! They show Maks on the phone wiping away tears as they ambulance drives off with Misty. Argh. No. Stop. Stop it. Never show it again.
Warren Sapp & Kym and Toni Braxton & Alex are saved before yet another set of words from our sponsors. When they come back, Tom announces that there will be no elimination and that the totals from this week will be combined with next week. He admits that it's not a surprise. Samantha adds that they will, however, reveal who would have been eliminated.
Susan & Tony are safe as are Cody & Julianne. Between Lance Bass & Lacey and Rocco DiSpirito & Karina, Rocco & Karina had the lowest totals and would've been eliminated. But they're not. So...you know, at least there's that. And I think they may have cut Samantha's mic off at the end of the show.
Your thoughts on tonight's show? Anything surprise you? Are you on the "no more injury replays" train with me?
I can't believe stupid Cloris is still on the show. Insane.
I'm losing interest in the show *fast*. Two couples I liked (Ted and his partner, Misty and hers) are gone. I'm rooting for Lance and Lacey, even though I know grumpy Len will try and stop them from winning. Grr...
Did anyone else think (tonight especially) that almost ALL the women looked like they had had "work done" on their "girls"?
Lucci must have...right? But it just seemed like everywhere I looked there was massive amounts of pushed up cleavage.
Ashley | Oct 7, 2008 11:04:22 PM | #Cloris is the best thing to have EVER happened to this show. :)
John | Oct 7, 2008 11:44:31 PM | #Okay, I am really NOT trying to be a hater here, but the hair and makeup folks need to stop strapping dead cats to Samantha's head on elimination night.
Admittedly, last week's was worse than this week's, but still...
It's bad enough she stumbles every time she speaks, TelePrompTer or not. (Which is made ever so much worse because Tom is so very awesome at what he does.)
So please, give the phony hair a rest, ya'll!
Oh... back to the actual show:
No elimination, we all knew that was coming, but here is what I'm hoping will happen next week:
Rocco is so adorably earnest and tries so hard. Hopefully, he will improve. People know he's in trouble, so will throw sympathy votes his way. This will take away from what has to be the Cloris sympathy vote. Cloris goes home.
Seriously, what was that she did this week? It was hardly even dancing, let alone a jive. I know she's 82, blah, blah, blah. But this show is supposed to be a DANCING competition. She's had a fine run on the show. It's time for her to go.
quisquilian | Oct 8, 2008 2:37:26 AM | #There's always one each season - someone that should leave right away but for comedic or whatever reasons, they stay on while better dancers leave. This year it's Cloris. Part of life. Try not to get too upset about it.
I didn't watch last night, but I'm glad to hear they cut Samantha's mic off at the end. They should do that more often. ;)
Terry | Oct 8, 2008 6:37:34 AM | #Best part of the past TWO shows were Maks and Edyta and Derek and Julianne's dances. Awesome!
Kate2 | Oct 8, 2008 7:11:25 AM | #The thing is - yes, there IS always somebody - usually of the senior persuasion - who starts out, stays a couple of weeks due to sympathy votes, and then gets booted.
BUT OMG - Cloris acts like she's in the first stages of some sort of dementia and I don't find it charming at all; I find it nauseating and have since the first week. That ridiculous gyration that was supposed to be a jive was embarrassing to watch. And since I just got my first Social Security check, I think I can comment on this fairly.
Rocco's not that good, but he deserves a chance if for no other reason than that he has tried so hard, and I find it appalling that Cloris stays week after week when we almost have to turn away from the screen when she "dances."
I was a big fan of hers when she was acting, but she's not even doing that - she just looks and acts silly.
Jan | Oct 8, 2008 7:58:25 AM | #Does anyone else think that it's becoming obvious that Tom can NOT stand working with Samantha? Lately he gets this horrified look on his face everytime she opens her mouth, sort of "what is this dumb bunny going to say now" look. He is so terrific hosting the show and he apparently has been forced to put up with her silly and disorganized banter.
ANA | Oct 8, 2008 9:07:23 AM | #I have been watching DwtS since the first episode, and I admit that I'm getting tired of all the filler and faking the 'SHOCKING!' results every week. I really wish that the results show were only 1/2 hour long, but that will NEVER happen, since DwtS is ABC's highest rated show ( and they want to sell more commercials). How many times do we have to hear about how hard it is to learn a new dance in 4 days, how much the celebrities' bodies hurt, how tired they are, etc? Also, I think ABC has already repeated Misty's injury footage enough times! Remember how many times they showed Marie Osmond fainting, and Jennie Garth falling a couple of seasons ago? :-(
What was the point of waiting until the last minute to tell us that no one would be eliminated this week due to Misty dropping out? Most people would remember that the show did the same thing when Sara Evans dropped out a couple of years ago (and American Idol does this also when a contestant has to leave early).
Karina really looked like she was in tears by the time they announced that Rocco should have been eliminated. Why do viewers keep voting for Cloris? Rocco isn't the best dancer, but at least he's genuinely trying and not mocking the competition like Cloris does. Maybe viewers are 'Voting for the Worst', just like they were encouraged to vote for Sanjaya a couple of seasons ago on AI. At this rate, Cloris could end up being in the final 5 if it weren't for the big fanbases of Susan Lucci and Lance Bass keeping them alive (I'm assuming these two had a lot of fans before this show).
Good luck to Misty, and I hope the injury doesn't end her volleyball career. :-)
Too bad they don't keep Sam's mike off.
Deb | Oct 8, 2008 9:28:32 AM | #Sam is totally unneccesary. Please get rid of her.
Deb | Oct 8, 2008 9:29:41 AM | #I'm also shocked that Cloris is still on the show. I'm so embarrassed when she dances. She does seem to be less than lucid, and the "dances," well they are totally free of any dignity. Remember when George Hamilton, a senior man with many physical limitations, was on the show. He certainly wasn't the best dancer, but the routines that Edyta built around his limited abilities were charming and adorable. I'm just so embarrassed for the slapstick, slightly sexual farce that is Cloris' weekly routine. Please, just let her go home and stop embarrassing her!
romana118 | Oct 8, 2008 9:49:49 AM | #I'm not wasting anymore time on this show. They are spending way too much time on stupid stuff. I want to see the non-pros dance and get eliminated accordingly. If the TV audience can't be rational, leave it up to the judges. Good grief is this show about good dancing or not!!!
Carol in Annapolis | Oct 8, 2008 9:58:59 AM | #All the votes in our house go to Cloris. She is a hoot, spontaneous, unpredictable and fabulous for someone in her age group. Rocco needs to get back to chef'in. Brooke is way over-rated.
Scootzville | Oct 8, 2008 10:08:33 AM | #I can,t understand why anyone would vote for Cloris. This is a dancing competition, not a comedic relief show. Rocco is not a dancer by any means, but is making an effort. By the way,I am not a fan of his. It would be interesting to know how the competitors feel about Cloris. IMO the Cloris factor is unfair to all the other people involved.
Trupen | Oct 8, 2008 11:23:06 AM | #Since they ultimately didn't eliminate anyone last night, what was the point of the episode? I agree with most posters that Cloris should not still be on the show. I'm not really going for Rocco either, but agree that he deserves to be there more than Cloris.
Penny | Oct 8, 2008 11:29:04 AM | #Ashley - I don't think anyone's had any work done on the twins. The wardrobe people are just pushing them up and perhaps adding a little padding if need be. Having augmentation as a ballroom dancer would be detrimental. Just look at Brooke Burke and how hard it was to keep her chest away from Derek two weeks ago....
| Oct 8, 2008 11:43:50 AM | #I was listening to the radio this morning and one of the DJs was talking about last night's episode being too disturbing, because he believed that Julianne & Derek's dance was too sexy for siblings to dance to. The co-DJ and news reporter didn't think that their dance was disturbing. Who thinks that Julianne & Derek's dance was disturbing?
It was so sweet to see that Maks has an emotional side.
Cloris needs to go home!
I think that Samantha Harris is a good co-host. I think she is a hundred times better than the co-host from first season. I feel bad that she has to deal with Cloris.
I have an issue: why did they announce who would have been eliminated this week if Misty did not have to withdraw? They made it seem like that Rocco is a total loser. What if she's actually been the second to the lowest voted person (which I doubt) since there is no paticular order? That is very insulting.
As an All My Children Fan - I can attest that Susan Lucci has definitely had augmentation in the last couple of months.
Monica | Oct 8, 2008 1:22:18 PM | #Penny,
You must be joking - Susan Luccis chest is totally phony. Her breasts look like two coconuts and with the typical flat chesters large valley between them it's hard to believe the wardrobe people make them so visible. Maybe they dislike her? FYI - I have implants (small) so I what I'm talking about.
Also - Cloris must go, Rocco may not be the best dancer but she IS the worst. Rocco is the reason I started watching the show - he is my 'dream' guy, tall dark & handsome, athletic and he can cook!
Brooke is good but still over-rated. I hope Warren wins.
amanda | Oct 8, 2008 1:25:18 PM | #Adding to Carly's comment: It's also very unfair to single-out Rocco/Karina because, as unlikely as it may sound, there's no way to know for sure if Misty/Max might not have had a TOTALLY BAD dance and not get enough viewer votes to continue on.
Monica | Oct 8, 2008 1:26:27 PM | #amanda,
I didn't say that. The post after mine is someone else.
Penny | Oct 8, 2008 1:39:25 PM | #To increase the odds of cloris leaving, VOTE FOR ROCCO!!
i also think brooke was over-scored this week and is way over-rated.
I'm really sorry Misty had to drop out, she was one of my favs, but OMFG how hot was Edyta in that schoolgirl Jive outfit?!
Sean | Oct 8, 2008 4:00:26 PM | #Next week I may vote for Rocco - performance quality irrelevant - in order to get rid of Cloris (guessing that she is next in line, vote-wise). Her first appearance was entertaining, but enough is enough.
Maureen | Oct 8, 2008 5:57:33 PM | #Lets be honest! If you voted for the worst performance each week Cloris would win hands down, but how can you judge her against the people who are really working hard each week, its unfair. Eventually your going to start losing a lot of viewers if this keeps up, if you already haven't.
