'Californication': Dinner And A Show
Family holiday get-togethers are bad enough, but when you have the roster of friends that Hank has on Californication, random gatherings aren't all that much better. So many dynamic personalities in one room can only lead to the mother of all train wrecks. Please to enjoy: the dinner party!
And these Spoilers you can not change.
Previously... Sonja's pregnant, Hank began writing for Lew Ashby and Trixie unintentionally ruins everything. Oh yeah, Becca has a gentleman caller.
Hank's rocking out the Guitar Hero to Freebird. My question is do you have to play all eight minutes of it? Karen's back from Whole Foods and gets Hank active for a dinner party. She's ready to make dinner while Hank insists she make her way to the patio, now covered in fancy rose petals. He gets down on bended knee and sweet talks his long-awaited proposal. Karen listens but isn't buying it. You can tell how serious he is by the volume of his voice... which is practically non-existent. Her body's saying let's go, but her heart is saying no. Hank is ignoring all this and is using her half smile as his confirmation.
Later, Mia wonders why she's at the dinner. Her creative use of words sets quite the uncomfortable scene. Becca has changed clothes in to something slightly less goth, but still not to Karen's liking. Hank uses the blender to keep the peace. The lovebirds embrace when a knock at the door reveals Becca's new boyfriend, Damien. If that wasn't awkward enough, Hank finds Marcy and Charlie making it well past third base right behind him. Hank quizzes Damien on his abortion stance when the "romance" becomes too much. Oh those two... they're as goofy as ever.
Get this party started! Charlie hugs Mia, hoping she'll say hello to his little friend while Hank insists Becca's bedroom door stay open at all times! Sonja and Julian arrive kissing everyone in sight. Once Karen tells of the "good" news, Sonja tells her that Julian can marry the two of them. The guys (and Becca) converse over Guitar Hero. Charlie is clearly high... on life! He inappropriately begins to rub Julian's pants. Another knock at the door reveals Ashby and his arm candy Destiny, Hank's mistaken encounter from the Laurel Canyon party. She is highly pissed at the both of them.
With the entire party at the table, Becca offers grace... for Satan. Marcy and Charlie are still enjoying each others company in a most uncomfortable way. The dinner talk is off to a rousing start. Becca defends her reading of the Satanic Bible to Julian, much to Hank's delight. Sonja tells everyone who didn't already know that she's pregnant. Julian reveals he's not the father, even though he "smelled" the pregnancy on their first date. To take the moral high road, he's willing to raise the child as his own anyway. Mia does the mental math to determine that Hank could be the father, based on their encounter at Bill's that night he threw up all over the painting. Karen sits in silence looking less than pleased. Mia toasts to "another fine mess."
Hank emerges from the bathroom to find Marcy, Charlie, Ashby and Destiny doing lines in Becca's room. If he thought that was bad, he then notices Julian emerging from the bathroom holding his sides... the bathroom where he forgot to flush twice. Even yet, the worst is yet to come. After Hank finishes cleaning up after Julian, he hears a thud in the kitchen. He rushes to find a foaming Ashby on the floor. It's no big thing as Hank gives him a couple shots the good record producer already had on him. Turns out, Ashby is allergic to sushi... and Destiny had some before proceeding to stick her tongue down his throat. Perfect.
As the party's winding down, Mia leaves with Ashby and Destiny for more fun elsewhere. Damien leaves, walking to his nearby house, furthering Hank's anxiousness over his daughter's rising libido.
Meanwhile, Karen isn't all that thrilled of Hank's baby daddy drama, but isn't mad either. She's not mad because she ultimately tells Hank that she can't marry him. She doesn't regret jumping in the car because marrying Bill wasn't the right path, but marrying Hank isn't right either. Because of this revelation, Hank says he can't stay. On his way out, he tells Becca he's going for a walk, and she says he did all he could... it was nice while it lasted. She looks bummed, and I finally feel something for her. Hank pops into his car and drives off.
If this wasn't the prime example of why you should never be ruled by your emotions, nothing is.
Next time on Californication, Hank's staying at Ashby's in the interim and has already found a new woman while Charlie's being accused of forever ruining Daisy's budding career.
Getting the entire cast in one room for one crazy episode... did it work for you? Which future episode do you predict Marcy and Charlie's relationship will crash and burn? Now that Hank and Karen appear on the outs, will Damien become the source of comfort and protection Becca craves?

I want to see Hank and Karen get there crazy **** together and make it work! The show could still be funny, they should be together not her throwing him to the curb because he isn't a perfect guy!
Hank never cheated on her and hasn't yet or would. Karen should be lucky that Hank took her back! The party scene awesome!!

Wow. Explosive episode. Top notch.
I very much enjoyed the whole thing.
It is a bummer about Karen and Frank though. But, at least now we get to see more of Frank's galavanting.
Brilliant episode. I must admit I got choked up in the scene between Hank and Becca at the end. The look on Hank's face when he's looking at her is just heartbreaking. Wonderful acting and powerful story which proves that you don't actually have to see sex on Californication in order to enjoy it.
This is a really good show. I loved the dinner party, that is when this show is at its best.
Adding Callum Keith Rennie to the cast was a perfect decision. Every show out there needs its own Cylon! He is a great character on this show.
I love that Karen and Hank are the only two people who actually seen to care about Mia's well being. Hank is so protective of the one who stole his work. When that truth surfaces, things are going to get very interesting.
Another good episode.
