'America's Got Talent': Top 10, baby!
Welcome to our special half-hour results show for America's Got Talent. To recap, I think the following acts should be the Top 10: Donald Braswell, Nuttin' but Stringz, Eli Mattson, Jonathan
Burkin, Sarah Lenore, the Tapping Dads, SickStep, the Cadence, Xtreme
Dance FX and then ONE of Queen Emily or Neal E. Boyd, Opera Singer. Hopefully those are the 10 who make it through.
Jerry welcomes us to the show and we say hello to the judges. Sharon is wearing a white sweater! With sparkles! What is going on here? Where's the black? Weird. We get an unnecessary recap of the first night and then they bring out those 10 to narrow down to 5. WTF? I thought it would be the best 10 out of BOTH nights? Dammit.
The first duo is The Wright Kids and ZOOperstars. Oh man! Neither of these deserves to go on to the Top 10. This is CRAP. Some really good acts from last night aren't going to make it because last night was stacked with talent and the first night was so crappy. The Wright Kids are through. Good for them. They aren't good enough. Blech.
The next duo are Neal E. Boyd, Opera Singer and Queen Emily. Well, at least only ONE of them is going through. The one who gets through (Sharon and The Hoff look gobsmacked that there's only one of them going through) then... wait a minute. Jerry tells us they are both through. Gag me. I'm already so annoyed tonight I could just spit.
Next is the James Gang and Xtreme Dance FX. Aw man. If we're doing 5 from each night, both of these should be through and the Wright Kids should be going home. And then they are BOTH leaving?!?! WHAT? Holy crap! Ugh, I can't believe how upset I'm getting about this show, but I really am.
The next duo is Paul Salos and The Cadence. This should be The Cadence, but seeing as how tonight is going... who can say? Then Paul Salos goes through!?! OH MY GOD! What is WRONG with people? WHAT is WRONG with PEOPLE?
So far, not a single act that has gotten through tonight was BETTER than the acts last night. This is disgusting. There are going to be some very good acts from last night going home and the Wrong Kids, Stank Sinatra and Backwards Hat Crier and BBW Crier have no business continuing on. Ugh.
Our last duo from the Sucky Night is Soldier Daniel and No-Daddy's Girl Jessica. I really don't care for either of them, I can't believe one of them gets to stay. Jerry starts with The Hoff, which genuinely seems to catch him off-guard. He chooses (after a REALLY long Word Salad spew of nonsense) Jessica. Sharon votes for Daniel "as a mum," whatever that means. Way to give Jessica a Mom Complex too, Sharon. Piers is the deciding vote. He says he's going with the act he believes has the talent to compete in the Top 10 and that is Jessica. Ya know, if Jessica makes it and Sarah Lenore doesn't, based on the weakness or strength of their respective semi-finals, that is REALLY unfair. Because Sarah is clearly better than Jessica.
Wow, we are getting crunched for time. I hope the judges can shut their yaps for the final choice.
Our first duo from last night is SickStep and Kaitlyn. Hmm. Well, welcome to the Top 10, cutie pie. I hope she wins the whole damn thing, just so the producers have to give a 4 year-old a Vegas show. That'll teach 'em to stack the deck this way.
The next duo is Donald Braswell and The Tapping Dads. Bye-bye, Tapping Dads. You did awesome last night. Sigh. I'm so annoyed. Donald was good too, though. Nothing against him.
Next we have the Taubls and Nuttin' but Stringz. I swear to all that is good and holy, if the Taubls get in I will throw my shoe through the TV. And then Nuttin' but Stringz makes it and YAYAYAYAY! Phew. Thank god.
The next duo is Sarah Lenore and Eli Mattson. NOOOOOOOOOO! NOOOOO! Oh my god, NO! Are you kidding me?!?! Queen Emily, Neal and Jessican are all Top 10 and one of these guys is going home? That is a travesty. And then Eli makes it through. That's great, I love him, but Sarah going home when Jessica stays is NOT RIGHT.
The judges' decision comes down to Elvis and Jonathan Burkin. WOW. I cannot believe the Baton Twirler finished 5th or 6th in the voting. That really surprises me. Piers says it's a hard call because the acts are so different. PIers says he believes there is more to see of Elvis, so he gets the vote. WOW. That is NOT right. Sharon buries her head in her hands (Jonathan looks ready to vomit right on stage) and then gets the names mixed around, finally voting for "Baton boy." Wow, I think Sharon might have dipped into a little of Paula Abdul's stash tonight. That explains the sparkly shirt, then.
We go to commercial before The Hoff has to decide. They are really cutting it close on time tonight.
By the way, whichever commenter got my hopes up about picking the Best 10 from both nights is on my list [big hairy eyeball]. (Just kidding, but seriously... I was really excited.)
The Hoff votes for Elvis. I am just beside myself. What a [redacting] [redacted][redacted] load of crap. Ugh.
There's no one to watch now.
***sniff***
Sara | Sep 11, 2008 5:58:03 PM | #I agree with the comments about Kaitlyn. Most egregious result of the night! Definitely would serve the producers right, not to mention hurt them in their pocketbooks. Couldn't stand her from the very beginning. This is supposed to be a TALENT show.
Barbara | Sep 11, 2008 6:33:53 PM | #I missed the show :( please advise who the top ten are. the blog is good but still confused
ginnyb | Sep 11, 2008 6:45:00 PM | #That was a stupid ass decision for elvis; thats a preety crapy top 10; Nuttin But Strings and Eli Mattson are the best thought!
me | Sep 11, 2008 7:33:56 PM | #I would have kept both of the last two acts and voted off Springer.
JW | Sep 11, 2008 7:39:30 PM | #Braswell, Stringz, Mattson, Boyd, Queen, Wright, Jessica, the little kid, the Sinatra guy, the Elvis guy.
Top 10 | Sep 11, 2008 7:43:36 PM | #Way to go JW!
I think Jerry is way past his prime, and it's time for him to go too.
SAD... Baton Boy gone? NOT FAIR!
Not watching this next season.
R | Sep 11, 2008 8:48:09 PM | #So 9 singers and no Xtreme DanceFX-the second most talented act behind Nuttin' but Strings-brilliant.
Joe | Sep 11, 2008 8:50:35 PM | #The fact that 9 singing acts got through is despicable. This is not American Idol.
Nuttin' but Stringz all the way.
Claire | Sep 11, 2008 10:33:16 PM | #NINE out of 10 are singers. The producers worked hard NOT to get it this way. I don't know why America continues to vote for Kaitlyn. There is no way she could do a show for an hour and half. She'd have to have shows within the show of other acts. And, then I think her attention span would be gone in a few minutes. I believe if she left right now, Disney would give her something.
Melody | Sep 11, 2008 10:37:39 PM | #They should keep the way they separate the talent into categories during the callback stage for the rest of the show. Then have the final consist of the best singer, best impersonator, best dance act, best variety act, etc.
Nine out of ten singers is absolutely ridiculous and the only act left that entertains me in the least is Nuttin but Strings. Please, please, I'm begging you let them win.
Mumbo | Sep 11, 2008 11:30:36 PM | #WOW. This has to be such an amazing top 10! I can't wait to see how they do. The voters actually got this right. There is nothing I can complain about too much.
The Wright Kids are much better than the ZOOperstars, someone needs to pop apin through them.
Neal E. Boyd and Queen Emily are both very talented. Glad they both survive. Am I the only one who seems to think he is a good singer? So what if he's big. He's very talented and will go places.
The James Gang and Xtreme Dance FX: Eh. Good but won't miss them too much.
Paul Salos is a very talented singer and glad to see him continue. What is wrong with people when they don't think he can sing like Sinatra? He's terrific!
I think Jessica is a better singer than Soldier Daniel and deserves to move on as well.
Kaitlyn: Doesn't she just tug at your little heartstrings? She's only four and is adorable. My mom is in love with her. Glad to see her continue but could be a problem if she ends up winning.
Donald and Tapping Dads: This is so unfair! They are both really great and I voted for both. While Donald deserves to continue, I hated to see the TDs leave. True story: My dad knows one of the Tapping Dads, so I was rooting for them.
Nuttin But Stringz was a little better than the Taubls and it makes sense for them to go forward.
Wasn't sure between Sarah and Eli. They were decent, but Eli is better.
Elvis and Baton Boy: Both are very good, but I was pulling for Elvis (Joseph Hall). He plays the king quite well. We need another King here!
So with the exception of the Tapping Dads, it went down pretty much like it was supposed to. And if any of the other people I voted for went home, that would have been crap!
And if Jerry is past his prime, it's hard to tell because he's so excited and full of energy.
Shaun | Sep 11, 2008 11:52:18 PM | #I have a problem with Donald Braswell competing on this show. I think all the other contestants in the top 20 are amateurs.
When he first appeared on this show, we were told that he took the stage "for the very first time" since his accident.
Check out his website, donaldbraswell.com, or his mySpace page. This man is no amateur.
He was a PROFESSIONAL operatic tenor (trained at famous Juilliard!). After that, he received a prestigious grant. He has been a student of some of the greatest teachers in the world.
He performed in Opera houses all over the US - and the world (he was performing in Wales at the time of his accident.)
The last couple of years he has been performing in the San Antonio area.
Oh, and about 6 weeks ago he released a CD called "New Chapter", produced by a Grammy-award-winning team.
Great timing for him to be on America's Got Talent - I'm sure it will help his CD sales! (you can get it at Amazon and a lot of other places).
C'mon, seriously! What is this guy doing in a competition with the likes of raw people like Eli (who I love!) and others? Gimme a break!
Well, I see most think this is awful.
It took enough of me to get over the fact they didn't even let Xclusive into the Top 40 over people like Ronny B and Male Tina Turner.
Then America (evidently) votes Kaitlyn #1, and the judges knock out Burkin. WTF?
Evidently, America is overpowered by a 4 year olds cuteness, and can't see the forest from the trees as far as talent goes. As I've said before, I have a 3 year old daughter, Kaitlyn makes me smile from a cuteness perspective when she makes me think of my daughter. But, on pure singing, she is not that great to listen to for even 3 minutes, let alone 90.
But, who cares now, she'll just weedwhack over all the other singers (some of which are good, but, none of which really stand out that much in a "WOW" kind of way).
DaveC | Sep 12, 2008 5:22:04 AM | #that's it. i'm DONE. i am not watching another America's Got Talent again. I feel like I have wasted HOURS upon HOURS of valuable life sitting in front of my tv waiting and HOPING for "talent" and have been hugely disappointed. This show has gone down the toilet, along with my expectations. BOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
jen | Sep 12, 2008 5:24:46 AM | #oh my gosh! i missed the top 10 announcement and am now so ashamed!!!! jonathan twirler boy was fricking wow!!!! oh my gosh! what a mess this show has become!!! i even think the top 40 had some bad talent too!!! wow! so disappointed that twirler boy will not be around to do another awesome job!
bdubya | Sep 12, 2008 5:47:07 AM | #i CAN'T BELIEVE A 4 YEAR OLD MADE IT TO THE TOP 20..THE JUDGES SHOULD BE FIRED FOR ALLOWING THIS TO GO ON IN THE FIRST PLACE. I HOPE SHE WINS JUST TO MAKE THE POINT.WATCH THE ADVERTISING REVENUE FOR NBC GO DOWN. IF I COULD AFFORD TO ADVERTISE ON THIS TIME SLOT,I WOULDN'T DO IT. DESERVES THEM RIGHT...
PLATO | Sep 12, 2008 6:19:45 AM | #Regarding Kaitlyn, two words: Sanjaya Effect
jack | Sep 12, 2008 6:39:10 AM | #Unfortunately someone had the incorrect listing on Brighthouse in Lake County Florida. They said the show was to air @ 8:30PM instead of 8:00PM. The network would no rerun the show.
Just a added note: The network choices to air the Casey Anthony story almost non-stop yet they can't put entertainment on the air. So Sad!
Susan | Sep 12, 2008 6:39:14 AM | #I'm so disappointed that Jonathan did not make it through. I had him pegged for the top 3. Nothing against the Joseph, but Elvis impersonators in Vegas are a dime a dozen, whereas Jonathan's act would have been unique. I feel bad about Cadence, also.
grace | Sep 12, 2008 6:39:49 AM | #I agree with the comment above - Vegas already has enough Elvis "tribute artists"..and let's not even mention the fact that he's cute and entertaining but a pretty mediocre Elvis.
Nuttin' But Stringz is the only thing keeping me watching the show at this point.
jimsmuse | Sep 12, 2008 7:22:13 AM | #"I have a problem with Donald Braswell competing on this show. I think all the other contestants in the top 20 are amateurs."
Neal Boyd has a music degree from a conservatory. He won some voice competitions for music teachers and sang at Carnegie Hall and later at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. Certainly, his vocal technique isn't good enough for opera, and is not nearly as good as Donald's but he is hardly an amateur.
Other performers had some history as well. Past winners had performance history as well, even Bianca Ryan. I believe the rules allow it, just not a major career.
As to Donald - if you look at his biography, you'll see a large gap between his early performances in opera and his trying to start a new career with lighter music. Notice, he doesn't sing operatic arias now. Could there be a reason for it, like his voice not being able to handle it, maybe yet? He is trying to build a different career now maybe because he is cannot sing opera any more, at least not a full opera in a theater with orchestra and without microphones, or maybe because he is too old. Why is he less deserving of a break than anybody else on this show?
One other thing. Why would you consider an amateur to be more deserving of a break than a professional who spent years and a lot of money trying to build a career and couldn't because it is very difficult to make a living singing? Would you pay to listen to an amateur trying to perform a virtuoso piano or violin piece and lacking the technique to do it well, when you can spend the same amount of money and listen to a famous professional? Classical singing is the same.
kitty | Sep 12, 2008 7:26:13 AM | #One other thing about amateurs vs professional things. If they were not to allow professionals on this show, they should really not bother with any performers of classical music, or even Broadway. Because this type of music and singing requires a lot of training.
Similarly with dancing or circus acts - can anybody who hasn't studied dancing since the early age hope to be good enough that people will pay to see them? Or any acts that require years of training.
kitty | Sep 12, 2008 7:37:56 AM | #I wanted Johnathon to make top ten.I am so upset he got beat by a robotic 4 year old singer with no personality.
I hope bigger and better things are waiting for Johnathon Burkin.
Caitlin's parents should be ashamed of themselves.
Rebecca | Sep 12, 2008 7:52:30 AM | #Wow...is the American Idol? I can't believe there are 9 singers and only one truly talented act!!! Nuttin' But Strings will hopefully win. They are the only ones I care about at this point. I don't think I will watch the rest though, I'll just see what happens afterwords. This show STINKS!
