'High School Musical: Get in the Picture': Goodbye, audition rounds!
Tonight on High School Musical: Get in the Picture, audition rounds are finally over! The 12 finalists begin their lives on campus in a competition-free episode that's refreshing in theory, but a bit boring in reality. But hey, at least there's a "Tiny Dancer" sing-along. I can get behind that.
We begin with a "get to know you" game in which the new students share their remarkably accurate first impressions of each other. It's fairly dull, aside from when Isaiah calls Christie a "dumb blonde," and it goes on waaay too long. Just show us the highlights, editors!
After 20 minutes of this, we follow the kids to the set of High School Musical (for the record, very much like a real school). Specifically, they gather at the set of the massively hilarious "Stick to the Status Quo" song. They're really excited, but even more so after the director and choreographer of HSM, Kenny Ortega, shows up. He talks about how when the original cast gathered to film HSM, it was all innocence and hope. Not so much anymore, eh, Kenny?
The kids are beyond excited to meet cast members Lucas Grabeel (adorable!), Olesya Rulin, and Kaycee Stroh. Kaycee tells a great story about taking her dance students to the audition for the first HSM and being spotted by Kenny, who created a part for her. After the Q&A, our students do an informal singing audition. They sing "You are the Music in Me" and "Breaking Free" together, and Kenny pulls them out one by one to sing solos. Briana forgets the words, a problem she had in past auditions, too. Stan excels, and Ether breaks out of his shell to rock his solo. Tierney and James were also standouts, but Christie's voice just doesn't do it for me.
After the jam session, Kenny takes them to a filming location for High School Musical 3 where they get to be fans in the crowd for a basketball game scene. They're very, VERY excited. And just as a side note: I totally didn't get to have my makeup done by professionals when I was an extra for a TV show. Lucky kids.
They move on to a dance class with Regina, who teaches them some simple dance/workout steps in what Briana calls "the ancient styles." Oh, Briana. Someday you won't be 17 years old anymore, and you'll feel bad for making fun of us unhip folks above 20. Anthony's struggling a bit since he doesn't like to dance OR exercise, and I'm totally feeling his pain. Ugh. After Regina gives the contestants a quick pep talk, we go to commercial and are treated to a trailer for HSM3: Senior Year, as they're calling it. Something tells me it won't be the last ad we see...
Are you feeling the HSM love, or is this just one big commercial for the movie? Who's your pick to win?

It IS pretty much one big commercial, but I enjoy watching enthusiastic, talented young people ... EXCEPT Briana! Am I a bad person for saying I dislike this girl? She gets on my last nerve. That comment about ancient dance style was the rotten cherry on top!
Hard to predict who might win. The ones I really like aren't necessarily the most talented. I'm a sucker for the back stories & sincerity.
I think it was bailey rather than Brianna who said that about the "ancient dance styles." I get those "B" names mixed up and went with you, Liz, but now I think Brianna's the one who always forgets the lyrics. ANYWAY, it's the blonde who thinks she's the incarnation of Sharpei (sp?) whom I dislike.
I'm 90% sure it was Briana who made the comment about ancient dance styles. That said, I find both she AND Bailey annoying. Briana mostly because of that comment (and her inability to learn simple lyrics), and Bailey because, well, the Sharpay comparison is pretty apt.
