Finalewatch: 'Shear Genius': Head to Head to Head

Jaclynsmith_sheargenius_240 It's been a long road on Shear Genius, littered with the burned-out shells of some genuinely awful hairstyles, some real talent that just fell short in a pinch. I can say confidently that I called two out of the final three finalists standing after the first episode.

And oh what a final challenge they're handed. But before they find out what it is, they each have one-on-one conversations with Linda Wells, editor of Allure. She discusses their strengths and weaknesses with them -- all of which they all seem pretty clear about already. Honestly, the sessions seem kind of useless, since they don't get a lot of insights from her -- like the heart-to-hearts Tyra Banks has with the girls of America's Next Top Model, but at least there someone cries.

For the final challenge, the stylists must tell the story of a woman's life through different hairstyles she might wear at ages 18, 30, 45 and 60. They must cut, color and style the hair of four clients -- in three
hours. That's insane.

Charlie gets a blonde, Dee gets a redhead, and Nicole gets a brunette. They get locks of hair "for inspiration." Now, I don't know about you, but the only lock of hair that inspires me is the hair that falls out in the shower. But that's more panic than inspiration. But I digress. Maybe if I had a lock of George Clooney's hair. Nah, that'd be weird.

The stylists get to think overnight about what they're going to do and what their stories will be, and at home they all talk about what they'd do with the $100,000 prize.

Dee_sheargenius2_240 Dee's story for her models is about a young girl, a natural redhead, who has a passion for music. She moves to New York at 18 and gets her big break at 30, when she releases her first CD. She becomes a successful producer, and by the time she's 45 she's been through two divorces and has raised three children. By age 60, she has grandchildren, and they call her Mama Red.

Charlie's 18-year-old blonde was a child star who's dying to prove herself as a serious actress. By 30, she's won her first Oscar. She makes a Hitchcockian suspense film at age 45, and by 60 she's a director.

Nicole's story is about an average woman who grew up without much money, but who at 18 was the It girl. At 30 she met the man of her dreams and decided to raise a family. By 45, they've made money and become successful, and at 60 she sees her grandkids up on the fridge and feels proud of herself.

The stylists also get to pick clothes for their clients -- some of whom have complicated hair textures, some have new and extreme dye jobs, others don't want to cut much length (if you're squeamish about cutting your hair, why volunteer to be a hair model?). And as the three hours tick away the stylists are each (understandably) feeling a little frazzled.

Then it's time for the hair show. Dee's 18-year-old has her signature bob, with long pieces in front and the wispy spiky things at the crown. The 30-year-old model, with her long, curly layers, looks unstyled. The 45-year-old is very straightforward -- straight hair with bangs and good color -- polished and nice. Mama Red, which I had some doubts about, given that the model came in with Bozo red, curly hair and a really hard to work with texture, came out beautifully. Dee added some different shades of red and gave her a jagged cut, which played to the curls and really looked great.

Charlie_sheargenius2_240_2 For his 18-year-old model, Charlie creates a "futuristic, modern '40s up do." It's actually cool, despite Kim Vo's declaration that it's a "hair burrito," and it's really nicely done. The 30-year-old has nice color and finger waves, but looks a little drag. The 45-year-old has a French twist updo -- very Hitchcock blonde, if Hitchcock had ever used a 45-year-old blonde. And the 60-year-old model has a more caramel/almond color, with a short, slightly spiky haircut. Looks fantastic. Whatever you think of Charlie, in this challenge you have to admit that his styles were clean and well-executed, and the color was beautiful.

Nicole really rises to the occasion, creating a long, straight style for her 18-year-old and soft waves with both straight and curly pieces for her 30-year old -- she says this woman isn't put together at all, but that didn't read on camera; I thought it looked nice. She takes the 45-year-old model to a lighter color with a very cute bobbed cut. But the 60-year-old model looked as though there wasn't enough time to style her. An OK cut, but the end result just wasn't finished.

It's clear the judges are impressed -- they say a lot of nice things that don't sound like just lip service, and they seem to appreciate the variety of techniques and expertise being used. It helps that all of the stylists actually stepped up more than they had throughout the season.

Nicole_sheargenius2_240_2 It turns out that the story Nicole was telling was her mom's -- which gets both her and Jaclyn Smith crying. It's a sweet moment, right before they gently take Nicole to task for the 60-year-old's haircut. Nicole is the first of the three to be sent home. Her goodbye is classy and charming, and combined with what she did tonight she proved her mettle far beyond what I would've thought she was capable of.

So it comes down to Dee and Charlie, clearly the two most talented and accomplished stylists this season. In the end, it's Dee who wins -- and she's so excited, dancing amid the crazy confetti, that you can't help but cheer her on. Way to go, Dee.

What did you think? Were you surprised that Nicole held her own as well as she did? Do you think the right person won?

The wrong person won!!

Firsty-first

Obviously our intrepid reviewer is a charlie fan! But props to staying neutral in your review. As for my review, I have been a Dee supporter from day One...so YEA!!!!!! I liked dee because she would throw charlie's crap right back in his face and had the cuts to back it up! As for Nicole, obviously she has some emerging talent to keep up with the other two experienced pros...so you go girl! Now Charlie.......I'm sorry but every week he got worse and worse and kept getting rewarded?! He may be a damn good hairstylist but I felt his 'styles' never fit the person or the challenge. So the right stylist won and all is good in reality tv land.

The right person won!!! I always liked Dee, as well as some of the others, I couldn't stand Charlie and his hair-don'ts. I always come across hairstylists like Charlie and run very-very fast.

In styling, he only styles what HE likes, not what the customer wants!

You go, Dee!!!

oh god dee won. that same old bob style week after week?? charlie deserved the win because he was creative and he DID listen to the client, whereas i knew what would come out of dee each time. even the judges called her on it. but they obviously wanted her to win because they never cut her despite this.

i tivo'ed and knowing she won is enough to hit DELETE. but thanks for the great review.

I am so glad Charlie didn't win!! I was absolutely convinced he was going to win, based on how many challenges he won throughout the show. Some of the wins were not deserved, in my opinion. Also, I do feel character should count for something, and he was a weasel.

Dee wasn't necessarily my favorite, but she has talent and she seems like basically a good person. She also seemed to put forth her best effort each time. Regardless of whether she might have fumbled now and again, she didn't just give up on any challenges, as some of the stylists did on challenges they didn't like.

I still think Glen got robbed. She should have made it to the end. I still can't believe they sent her home, when she was at the bottom with Nekisa.

I think it reveals a big flaw in the way these types of competitions are judged. Since the idea is to find the best hair sylist overall, they shouldn't base eliminations solely on the individual challenges. Overall performance should factor in, at least a little bit. Particularly when it is a close call between two competitors. Otherwise, mediocre competitors can end up sliding through much farther than they deserve, based simply on luck because somebody else just messed up a little bit worse on a challenge.

i'm so mad nicole didnt win.she wasalways my favorite.

i ove her cute little hair and i think shes so talented for only being 24!charlie was okay and if he wasnt such a jerk he would have been okay.i lke some of his hair cuts.i love dee's bob with an edge and i'm getting my hair done like that but i don thnk she should have won because she only ever did the bob.you have to show that you can do any hair anywhere in any shape and i dont believe she can do that.but oh well.I LOVE YOU NICOLE! =]

The right person won.. I was really rooting for Nicole, but Dee did do a GREAT job, especially with the craziness that was Mama Red's hair.

I did think tonight was Charlie's to lose as they LOVED him. I think he took the easy way out by doing up-dos and it cost him.

So wanted Charlie to win. I got so tired of Dee's usual bob--move on to something else!

I agree with Becca about Glen and Nekisa. Nekisa should have been cut much earlier than she was.

Yes, the right person won. Hooray for Dee!! She's been great all the way through! She was my pick from the beginning. Someone above said Dee should not have won, but you're going out to get her haircut? That's her signature haircut (who else has one in the top three?), which is so cute! I love it! Her highlights are perfect. All four of her models looked younger (but she kept the 18 year old, 18) and they all had a different hair style. She's excellent! She didn't always do the bob, like someone said. What are you watching? The judges told her once ... she since changed it up. Gosh, if you really want to go there, Charlie kept doing the up-do styles more than Dee with her bob, but she had other styles too, my goodness.

Charlie had a problem. The first two models' hairstyles should have been switched, as well as the last two. They all looked older! He does fine ... but he's not my type of hairstylist. No way will I wear any of those up-do's!

I never cared for Nicole's hairstyles, or the way she treats her clients. The best one she did was the 18 year old and that was too easy and too dark! Tell me, what 60 year old says, "Im going to go darker now, so I don't look so young,"? What?? She also made her models look older. I would never have Nicole cut my hair. She never listens! She does what she wants, and the model always looks worse to me than she did before the cut. Scary.

Anyway, Dee deserved to win ... and again, I am happy with the winner of Shear Genius!!!
