Week 4 results on 'So You Think You Can Dance'
Another Thursday, another cruel cut on So You Think You Can Dance. It just gets harder and harder every week.
Spoilers
The group number is to "Money Money" from the New Broadway Cast Recording of Cabaret. I wasn't too much into it but it might just be because of the insane number of unnecessary camera cuts. Oh. It was a Tyce Di Orio number. That also explains things. I don't always dig his stuff. But at least Cat Deeley looks good tonight.
Katee & Joshua and Kherington & Twitch are the first two couples on stage. Neither of them are in the bottom, to both their delight and that of the crowd. After the commercials, Kourtni L. & Matt have gained no reprieve in their seemingly constant Bottom Three status. Chelsie H. & Mark are safe but Courtney & Gev take their first dip into the bottom, mostly likely thanks to the uneven showing in their Hip Hop routine.
One more break and our last two couples are finding out their fates - Comfort & Thayne and Jessica & Will. Rounding up the bottom are...rats. Comfort & Thayne. Boo. I'm not particularly attached to Thayne, though he is probably the best male partner in the group (him or Gev), but I'm totally biased about Comfort. It's much harder this season as I like far more of the girls
Robert Muraine returns to entertain us. He's dancing to C&C Music Factory's "Everybody Dance Now," which I find hilarious for some reason. If ya'll don't remember him, his that crazy, mutant, double jointed Popper who bailed during Vegas week. Nigel wants to see him battle Phillip, that other Popper who's all crazy and double-jointed. And not a quitter. Robert would be down and certainly can't back out now that Nigel asked if he'd "chicken out" again. Them's fighting words.
1. Kourtni L.
"No Man" by Nina Storey
2. Matt
"Sweet Contentment" by Bradley James and the Roadies
3. Courtney G.
"What's Another Day" by Maria Mena
4. Gev
"Everybody Loves A Carnival" by Fatboy Slim
5. Comfort
"Hit the Floor" by Twista feat. Pitbull
6. Thayne
"I Want To Break Free" by Queen
These eliminations are getting harder and harder to call. As much as I like Kourtni & Matt (more so Kourtni), they may be going home since they keep ending up in the Bottom Three.
OneRepublic, who broke big partially thanks to this show, return with the single "Say (All I Need)." It's a nice enough song but I'm starting to wonder if they have any uptempo tunes. I don't have their album, if you couldn't tell.
Okay. Now for the results. Nigel says he doesn't think he's ever cared more about a group of dancers in any other season and looks forward to handing the decision reigns over to the audience. Courtney G. is safe, as I expected. Nigel told Comfort that her solo wasn't that great but, as the votes were split, she gets to stay. Kourtni, sadly, must leave. But she says that she's excited to see how she grows after this - she hasn't plateaued.
Gev is staying, which I also expected. Apparently it was unanimous and Matt is being sent home, leaving Thayne to continue to bond with Comfort. The judges felt he came into the show at a high level but didn't really grow as much as everyone else.
Did the judges get it right or wrong? Were you surprised that any of the couples ended up in the bottom? Any other thoughts?

I actually like Matt. I was hoping that Thayne would go home because I find him forgettable.
Send Comfort home now! She's an experiment that failed.
I think Comfort is certainly a talented girl who tries hard, but she is overmatched by the other women at this point in the competition. I think Kourtni should've stayed. However, if Matt's elimination was unanimous, that pretty much spelled Kourtni's ousting b/c she is too tall to dance with either Gev or Thayne. I think she went home mostly because her partner got eliminated.
Comfort can do her hip-hop thing but she just isn't good enough to do the other styles. I actually don't think Thayne is that strong either.
I'm glad we got to finally see Gev and Courtney's solos, they looked very strong. I wish their partner routines would utilize their talents more.
I think the bottom 4 were the right choice (I'm excl Gevalliano) and so I was okay with whatever decision, but I agree it was all or none for both couples because of the height. I was ready for Comfort and Thayne to go, but oh well. I'm a little afraid they'll keep Comfort one more week just to get her into the travelling show. As long as its Jessica I won't be disgusted, but still... Thayne's a goner though. I feel bad for him, he's been saddled with problem partners the whole time.
Love Cat, love this show!
I had to finish watching My Boys first, Kyle Howard is so cute!
I was kind of hoping they'd give the tall folk one more chance, they had a lot of interesting lines. Though last night the judges made their plans pretty obvious with the overenthusiastic praise for Comfort and Thayne.
I agree with the above in that either of the eliminated people or Thayne and Comfort would have been ok with me especially since I'm expecting Thayne and Comfort to go next week now.
I think it's fairly safe to say that Thayne and Comfort will be bottom 3 next week regardless of how good they do next week. Ditto for Twitch and Kherington and Josh and Katee being in the top 3 next week.
The only question remains who will be the other couple to be safe/bottom 3 among Gev and Courtney, Will and Jessica, and Chelsie and Mark. I think next week does determine the fate for those 3 couples.
Poor Kourtni. She was doomed by her height. Most of the choreographers didn't understand how timing needed to be adjusted for her and Matt.
I had no idea how the show would handle partnering her with those short guys later in the competition. I don't think SYTYCD knew what to do with her either and copped out by eliminating her.
I mean Comfort is a beautiful and talented woman, but she can't compare to Kourtni's breadth of dancing ability.
Do you think there should be a height limitation for the contestants?
I remember last year that I thought the first girl to be eliminated lost mostly because her partner was too short and they looked bad dancing together.
I thought all 3 guys did strong solos tonight; of the gals, I liked Courtney's the best.
Didn't like many of Matt & Kourtni's routines over the weeks, so was neither surprised nor disappointed to seem them go.
Robert M. was awesome as usual. Nigel just needs to shut up and get over himself (and I say that as someone who has usually rolled his eyes at people whining about Nigel).
Cat did indeed look good tonight, although the ginormous 'bun' they put her hair in totally put my in mind of Bride of Frankenstein. The Cleopatra collar was nice, and the dress.
I liked Kourtni and Matt but they *have* had a few off moments. Truly, I wonder if it isn't just the choreography - look at what some of our favorite groups have had to work with... a Mia Michaels routine for this pair alone probably would have hugely increased the fan love and kept them from the bottom 3.
Still, I'm okay with them leaving. Neither of them was going to win the competition. I'd also be happy to see Comfort and Thayne leave, though I really enjoyed Thayne's solo last night (much as it pains me to say it as, after one commenter's suggestion a few weeks ago, I see the "gentlemen" from an episode of Buffy whenever I see Thayne's grin).
After that though - Thayne and Comfort's ousting (her solo last night was awful), I don't want anyone else to leave (maybe Jessica, but Will needs a partner!). So I propose a change to format... Everyone sticks around for the remaining weeks and at the end, we vote for the most entertaining overall couple and they get the prize. :)
Seriously, Thursdays are going to be hard heading into the next half of the season!
These idiot judges got themselves in a bind. They chose tons of contemporary dancers and, to maintain some sore of variety in the tour, they are saving people like comfort over Kourtney, even though Comfort can't hold a candle to K's overall abilities. Comfort is a one trick pony.
