'Meerkat Manor: The Next Generation': Mister Independent
Antonio Banderas has nothing on our new Don Juan of Meerkat Manor: The Next Generation. Zorro most definitely makes his mark tonight. I swear, if the family-swapping keeps up the torrid pace it has, I’m gonna need to create one hell of a flow chart.
These Spoilers are Commando friendly. You have been warned.
After quite the harsh winter, at least in terms of quality and quantity of food, the stage has been set for one heck of a smorgasbord. With their newfound strength, five of the Whisker males band together and set off to find some quality ladies.
This week, we turn our attention to Zorro, the man of the hour. With quite the life experience, he tackles and overtakes a poisonous beetle with relative ease. Can he have the same luck with the ladies as a rover?
Zorro and his younger Jazz Quartet brothers spot foragers ahead, but being that they’re Commandos makes the possibility of hooking up slim at best. Young Duke makes the mistake of being too headstrong to start and blows their cover. The boys make haste and chase. Nikita, however, is determined to keep the rovers at bay. Round one goes to Nikita, but for Zorro and the Jazz Quartet, they know it’s a marathon and not a sprint.
Meanwhile, Sophie continues to roam alone. Being evicted from the family brings her no favors out on the harsh Kalahari. She wistfully observes her former clan foraging in the distance. Her own hunt for food has been fruitless, not to mention the fact the ticks are eating her alive. Her little brother Axel breaks ranks from the Whiskers to offer relief to Sophie.
Vultures have taken a liking to the Commandos, hovering in their neighborhood. Also hovering are the roving Whisker males, waiting to strike the subordinate females. Round two is on, but only after the vultures lose interest in the meerkats. The boys spread their offense to effectively cover the Commando burrow. Duke makes a move independent of the Quartet and lands himself a larger Commando female by the name of Rosie.
Back at the showdown, both Nikita and Zorro have their respective groups aimed squarely at each other… not noticing the crafty owl nearby. When the owl makes its move, the ensuing panic causes the two warring factions to take cover in the burrow together. Once the males emerge, Zorro scent marks the entrance, but this quickly turns into quite the burrow raid. He leads a party into the burrow and corners Nikita and a couple other females.
Zorro lets Nikita go, but she is dismayed at the stench of Whiskers all over her compound. If that wasn’t bad enough, Zorro makes quite the power play by scent marking Nikita herself. In a stunning turn of events, these two opposites have definitely made quite the love connection. Duke and the rest of the Quartet pile on and turn the lovefest into an orgy of sorts. The rest of the Commandos watch in stunned disbelief at their leader’s sudden change in attitude. The old Nikita certainly would have never allowed such behavior from sworn enemies before!
Another quick storm brings new life to the Kalahari. Zorro has come out of nowhere to become the dominant male of the Commandos. Nikita has finally found a suitable male to replace the legendary Hannibal at the top. When it rains, it pours…
Next time on MM:TNG, Rocket Dog battles to protect her unborn children while life at the Commando camp turns nasty in a hurry.
Will the Nikita and Zorro coupling be successful for very long? Could good fortunes find Sophie in the near future? Are the Aztecs just that uninteresting to warrant no airtime yet again?
Has there really been no dominant male with the Commandos since Hannibal died? I thought Nikita had a new mate, who was off with some other Commando males foraging this episode. I kept expecting a big clash with Zorro when the others returned.
Next time, "Life under Nikita" is more difficult than expected . . . . I wonder if she leads Zorro et al on a raid on Rocket Dog and the Whiskers (hence RD's struggle to keep her pups alive.) That would be another big drama.
George | Jul 7, 2008 10:35:33 AM | #I look forward to recaps. I tried again to watch but the narration just doesn't do the show justice. What was the scoop about Sean Astin not coming back, money? If so, pay him please. Until then thanks again for the recap.
jt | Jul 8, 2008 7:53:24 AM | #I think they stated the next episode does have Rocket Dog and the Whiskers fighting with Nikita and the Commandos, giving her undue stress. RD just never gets a break.
I am interested to see though what Zorro and the rest of the male rovers will do when they square off with their former group, and with Nikita's probable insistence at that. hmmm.
Charlotte | Jul 8, 2008 11:45:36 AM | #I feel sorry for RD. You're right, Charlotte. She NEVER gets a brake. And when she does break she dies.
Hayden | Aug 1, 2008 9:45:41 AM | #I know right? Just as she is looking strong in her leadership role, like her mother Flower was, she is senselessly killed in an idiotic manner. At times though & when alive, she is/was careless, but the role of Whisker's df can't be easy & she was just really coming into her own.
I wonder if they will show it next season or if they maybe did not catch the "hit and run" accidental death of RD on film as it supposedly happened this past April/May when they stop filming the series in February. Perhaps we'll get a blurb at the beginning of next season of her unfortunate passing on.
Keep an eye out for Ella, who I don't remember them having ever mentioned, who takes over as df of the Whiskers.
Charlotte | Aug 2, 2008 6:48:30 PM | #I know she did some stupid things but you gotta think she was just now DF of a group over 50. That's a lot to take over in one night.
