'Big Brother 10' Kinder and gentler

Libra We are one week into Big Brother 10, but it feels like so much longer. Only this time, it's not because the HGs are insufferable idiots. Well, OK, it sort of is because of that. But they are insufferable idiots in a totally new and unique way for Big Brother! This time, they are playing to win...as if they were 6 weeks in rather then just past 6 days. ish.

But first, let's review! Libra, April and Ollie banded the house together to take out Brian, who tried to use interpersonal skills and sock puppets to save himself. While he still ended up leaving the house, he did manage to gather enough of the easily entertained into his thrall despite the allure of a $500,000 pay day to ignore the guy everyone agreed to vote out. As such, Steven and Angie find themselves filed into the ranks with Dan as Brian supporters. The sock puppets were fun, but where they $500,000 worth of fun? Brian pegged Memphis as the biggest threat, but it's Jessie who won the HoH.

Honestly, there's a lot of petty bickering, such as Keesha muttering that April is a "Barbie Bitch" for jumping into Jessie's arms when he won, which she says was fake and Angie declares a strong dislike for everyone on team Jessie...but really, nothing much interesting gets said or accomplished until the reveal of the HoH room. It's about what we would expect, about 1 picture of Jessie with family, 1 with a friend, and then the rest are all of that which Jessie loves the most: himself. He points out to the other HGs how "freaking ripped" he was, all the way back in May, going into great detail to describe his deltoids and abs. It's the sort of conversation that would make me want to use chopsticks to deafen myself. Sadly, it seems no chopsticks or even sharp pencils were provided to the HGs. It should be termed cruel and unusual punishment, frankly. I'm considering writing a strongly worded missive to CBS.

Jessie likely couldn't write a missive, or even a post-it note to Mrs. Chen's husband, but he is more than a little upset that Steven decided to sit out his stunning lecture on his own pectorals. He waits until only Libra, Ollie, April, Michelle and Memphis are in his room to discuss who he wants to put up. He seems to be leaning toward Renny and Steven, but the rest of his alliance are against that. They want Steven and Dan. They give Jessie valid reasons why, but as time goes on and he insists he wants to put Renny up, they get increasingly fed up until finally Libra tells him that putting Renny up is a stupid idea and he needs to let it go. I'm liking Libra.

In the downtime, Jerry talks to some of the girls about his wife of 54 years, who is his best friend and who has Parkinson's. He tells them that he started getting in shape when he promised her that he would always be there to take care of her and would never put her in a nursing home. The girls cry and I have to admit, it's one of those hopelessly endearing things that you can't help but feel for. He goes on to say that she told him to put her in a home and not let her illness ruin his life and he starts to cry himself as he says he couldn't do such a thing to her.

Less emotionally sincere is Dan, who asks Steven about his experiences as a gay man, including whether or not he is out of the closet (well, he's out on national TV, so...yeah), if he waited to tell him last because he was Catholic, and if he's ever been with a girl. Dan just lived up to a bunch of Catholic stereotypes, which is a shame since he's already proven that he doesn't know the dogma that well. Steven answers all of Dan's questions graciously and then moves on to talk to Keesha about being dog owners. They both agree that sometimes they like their dogs better then people, but when Keesha goes one further by saying she likes her dog more than her significant other, Steven looks horrified. Rightfully so. But he also artfully crafts the conversation towards discussing how their dogs might forget them while they are in the house - and what if they get sick? Well, you would almost be GLAD to be evicted, wouldn't you? Keesha looks worried.

Angie Angie, meanwhile, is not interested in little yappie balls of fuzz as much as she's interested in saving her own behind. She goes up to Jessie's room to tell him that she doesn't want their relationship to remain as it has been for the last 24 hours. He points out that they haven't had a relationship for the last 24 hours, because she aligned herself with Brian. She tries to deny that, but all her arguments fall weakly in the face of the fact that she spent 30 minutes trying to get him votes. The conversation ends with it being quite clear that Jessie is planning on holding a grudge.

Food Competition

It's called Stop Your Whining - which sounds promising, however when I notice no duct tape is involved I lose hope for the blissful silence I had briefly envisioned. Instead, they refer to "wine". The house is divided into 2 teams - red and green. Each team has two team mates to plug the holes in a large vat that is being filled with wine, one team mate to search for corks and toss them up to the pluggers and the rest of the team is set to gather up the wine falling from the holes in the other team's vat and try to fill wine bottles. The game is over when one team manages to plug all their holes (hee! Yes, I'm 12) and the winner is whichever team fills the most bottles. It's not much of a competition, with the green team filling 1.5 bottles and the red not even filling one. This means that April, Jerry, Renny, Libra and Keesha are all on slop. It doesn't seem to much bother Renny, Jerry and Keesha, but it really infuriates April and Libra who both yell and snipe at each other until finally going to pout on their own for a bit.

After the Food Comp, Dan asks to use Jessie's restroom - the standard ruse when you want to talk to the HoH. A fact Jessie is blissfully unaware of. Dan stays in the room, monitoring the TVs and waiting for Jessie to come upstairs. Which he finally does - with Ollie in tow. Dan puts the remote back as he found it and scurries to the bathroom while Ollie and Jessie hang out. A few minutes later, he flushes and they look at each other, wondering who is in the room. It would almost be comical if it wasn't so sad.

Speaking of sad, Libra suddenly asks Memphis why he is so unemotional. He says it probably has to do with a bunch of factors from his life and she challenges him to name 2. He starts off with losing his dad at age 15. It seems his dad left his mom when he was 2, but reached out to him 13 years later. Within 3 months he was diagnosed with terminal heart disease and died another 3 months after that. Memphis moves on to tell about how a girl broke his heart because she knew what kind of guy she wanted, and he wasn't that guy. April and Libra both "Awwww" and he's quick to continue that he's head over heels in love with his current girlfriend. In fact, it's the first time he's put his heart out there for anyone in about 10 years. So, tonight it's been a softer, gentler Big Brother, apparently.

Dan finally gets his time alone with Jessie, saying he wants to clear a few things up. He explains how he gave Brian his word, and so even though it hung him out to dry, he kept his word. He admits that he has nothing going for himself, asking if Jessie has any ideas and promising to give him the same sort of loyalty if he wants it. Jessie thanks him for his honestly and tells him that he admires how he handled the situation, but commits to nothing. Because for as strong as Jessie wants to seem on the outside, he doesn't seem to be able to make a decision for himself. So, he went with the alliance's choice. The final nominations are Dan and Steven - much to Renny's surprise.

What do you think of the nominations? How long do you think the alliance of Ollie, April, Libra, Jessie, Memphis and Michelle will last? Anyone else seeing Libra and Memphis as the strongest players, or is that just me? What about Renny's amazing attempt to bring back tie-dye tonight?

I knew I didn't like Jessie from the beginning, but come on. He really is a tool. Too bad Steven is going home, he's semi-fun.

Oh, PLEASE! Nothing is happening here! There is just NO drama this season. Or am I missing something? All I am seeing is minor interactions, molehills being made into mountains by the editing. I was intrigued by the food competition, however. THAT was an interesting thing not seen before in any season I've watched. I'm still wondering, what is the twist for this season?

xyzzy | Jul 20, 2008 9:59:32 PM | #

The twist is Jerry is really the gay guy and Steven is not

barock | Jul 20, 2008 11:46:01 PM | #

jessie spoke with a french accent all sthrough zee food competio-one. how do the french say TOOL?? and full-of-zeeself??

jesse should write a book on how to win friends and influence people...NOT!!!! he pisses people off even when he's trying to say something nice.

still hard to find a fave but still leaning toward memphis. stephen seems okay too.

dan made a good play but jessie...doh.

i thought rennie made a better than usual (for her) fashion statement tonight (pink hat). she chalked up her surviving last week to her cleverness, but in fact it was due to her lameness.

i hope stephen or dan win the pov and they both stay and someone else goes home (but not memphis).

the big alliance is already showing cracks.

Jessie's arrogance will be his downfall, as much so as Brian's gameplay was.

I really can't stand Jessie...talk about needing to get over yourself! And Jerry annoys me too...it's been all downhill for him IMO since the Nixon comment...Also, why wasn't Jerry wearing any military garb when he put up Brian? I wish he would would explain that for me.

Last night on BBAD Angie, Memphis and Stephen had a hilarious conversation trying to figure out what the twist is for this season. It reminded me of last season, when the HGs were reading significance into the blocks in the hamster cage.

Boring. Boring. Boring. That's the twist this season.

Jessie seemed like a great, humble guy who happened to have more muscles that all the other HGs combined. Now, after winning HOH he seems a little too arrogant and full of himself. I didn't understand how not going up to see his HOH room was disrespectful? Why is Steven up on the block? I can understand Dan, but Steven.

I'm starting to like Libra, Renny and Steven more and more. And Jerry and April, less and less. The rest are just boring Big Brother wallpaper.

By the way, I'm writing this comment without any military garb. Well, actually I'm wearing almost nothing at all!

BillyBob, Linda, where are you?

Peace.

Truthfully, when I read the profiles for the host guests before the show started, I thought I would adore Libra and dispise Dan, but it seems to be the opposite. Dan is more open minded than I thought, and Libra is a catty b****h! I want to see April and Libra turn on each other and I hope Dan and Steven can stay.
Also, the two sides need to develop team names... But something better then Team Christ, please!

Libra is interesting to watch for the most part, but she's doing what Brian got evicted for with the rest of the house, trying to control it. I think that unless she tones it down a little, she'll be out the door quicker than she thinks.

Hi JVice, I am here. True storey, was folding up my dinner-for-one folding tv table and got my pajama pants caught in it and it dragged me down and pinned me naked to the floor. Thank God Joshie came home in time to free me so I could watch last night's episode.

As a gay man, I thought Dan's questions to Stephen weren't that bad. I would have been ok answering them. As a 1/4 French Canadian however, Jessie's attempt at a French accent filled me with rage and I then broke the TV table over Joshie's back. He thought that was foreplay and we made out like bandits all night long. Why am I so bad on names this season. I like the girl who doesn't like April. Libra doesn't completely disgust me. Stephen would do just fine if something terrible ever happens to Josh. Maverick's lack of emotion makes me want to watch him take a shower. Can someone please tell Jerry to stop doing his Jack Klugman impersonation!

Glad to see you back JVICE.

Billybob | Jul 21, 2008 9:14:16 AM | #

Billybob you make me laugh...you and JVice on here are betten then anything on the show so far this season...

I love stephen tho...Billybob dont get mad but after dealing with josh last year I am so happy to have stephen this year...he is my favorite...josh was there way to long and now poor stephen is gonna be gone...doesnt seem fair...

I still dont like Libra April Ollie Jessie or Michelle...I do like Stephen Dan Angie Memphis and Keesha

Jerry started out on my like side but is moving closer and closer to the dont like side...and Renny the opposite

I wish both dan and stephen could stay but that wont happen I hope whoever stays gets HOH or at least Renny Angie maybe even Keesha someone other then the other group

Linda | Jul 21, 2008 9:54:21 AM | #

Hey Linda,

thanks for the props. I can understand how Joshie could make people want to beat him with a stick. I do like Stephen, he seems so calm and pleasant to everyone. I do think it was a big mistake though, with him not going up to Jessie's HOH room. Granted he missed nothing but it is kinda tradition and automatically put him on the outs. What is with everyone sleeping in the house this year? Maybe there is some sort of gas leak? Give Julie Chen a canary and get her to investigate!

Billybob | Jul 21, 2008 10:10:28 AM | #

I love this cast, they actually do fun things and are very creative. When Natalie and Adam were there it was like an X-rated show all the time, the houseguests this time are really cool people. I like Dan and Keisha.

denise | Jul 21, 2008 11:36:42 AM | #

BB (BillyBob), I'm so happy you and Joshie are getting along, or is it "getting it on". I forget. Anyhow, I think the HGs are sleeping so much because they're bored! We need a medical emergency or some sort of twisted twist.

I think the twist should be they bring in HGs from international editions who don't speak or understand English. It might be fun. Or better yet, have Julie move in with them and see if she can survive a week with these people. Would she still look fabulous in her flight attendant outfits? Or would she go over the deep end and wrestle Renny for her wig and hat collection?

'till next time. Peace.

JVice | Jul 21, 2008 11:44:23 AM | #

Brilliant JVice! I would love to see Julie in the house, crawling through honey or chowing down on a big bowl of slop and no spoon! :)

Billybob | Jul 21, 2008 12:12:11 PM | #

Jessie may be an arrogant tool, but OMG he is HOT!!

Wes | Jul 21, 2008 12:28:36 PM | #

jessie is an arrogant ass...and if i have to hear him say "i'm not just a body, i have a brain" again i will stab myself in the eye with said chopsticks!! if he has a brain then why is he letting everyone tell him who to put up...and they're not just telling him - they're insisting...i thought libra would put him in a choke hold if he chose renny over dan...
i still very much dislike jerry, and if he were hoping for pity votes on account of his dedication to his wife, might someone ask him then what he is doing in the big brother house, and not taking care of her for 3 months...and the little grabbie-grabbie on april's boobs - speaking of april - what an irritating bitch...i would love to see keesha or angie toss her in the pool!!

Kelley | Jul 21, 2008 12:48:50 PM | #

Jessie hott??? noway...his head is to small for his body...

Linda | Jul 21, 2008 1:29:01 PM | #

omg, Billybob Linda JVice (and me) :) all together on the same board, the reunion is finally official hi everyone. I agree y'all crack me up and are more entertaining than the show so far!!

Billybob, i thanked you for your props a couple boards back but don't know if you ever saw it? anyway nice to see you back and i'm glad that you've recovered from your unfortunate accident and fortunate rescue by joshie....

dl | Jul 21, 2008 5:27:14 PM | #

I like team Libra. Slop is really getting to her. Otherwise she would be controlling the game. Most people sort of lose strenght and thought patterns when their not eating. Its obvious the other girls in the house is use to starving. I think she'll be alrite when she gets to eat. Until then she needs to just lay low an I beleive she jus realized that a couple of hours ago when she was talking to Ollie.
