Week 2 results on 'So You Think You Can Dance'
Results shows are always a mixed bag for me. On one hand I get to see group numbers by all our So You Think You Can Dance finalists, which is always enjoyable. On the other hand, two dancers must go home.
Spoilers below
We open with the group number which indeed is to "Elevator" by Flo Rida feat. Timbaland (with a touch of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" in the mix). It was great...too bad the directing sucked. But Shane Sparks is still the man.
Our first three couples take the stage shortly after the introduction of the judges (Mia, Mary and Nigel). Joshua & Katee are the first couple safe. We see the recaps of the performances of both Kherington & Twitch and Chelsea T. & Thayne before finding out that Chelsea & Thayne are in the bottom. I'm mildly surprised, but it makes sense unfortunately.
After the commercial break, Chelsie H. & Mark are safe. Between Kourtni L. & Matt and Jessica & Will...neither of them are in the bottom, much to both of their delights.
Cat tosses to another break and, after we return, the final three couples step up to the firing squad. Susie & Marquis are in the bottom as well. No shock there. Comfort & Chris and Courtney & Gev are the last partners standing. Unfortunately Comfort & Chris find themselves having to dance for their lives. The only good news is that we get to see Comfort do a solo finally.
Our guest dancer tonight is Timo Nunez, a Flamenco dancer who auditioned the first two seasons. But not just any Flamenco dancer, one of the best. And is he easy on the eyes.
All right, it's solo time.
1. Chelsea T.
Song: "Time Is Now" by Moloko
2. Thayne
Song: "Belief" by Gavin DeGraw
3. Susie
Song: "The Anthem" by Pitbull feat. Lil' John
4. Marquis
Song: "Stop And Stare" by One Repbulic
5. Comfort
Song: "Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambaataa
6. Chris
Song: "Again" by John Legend
Marquis' solo was super trick heavy but I have to say he's impressive. All the flips and whatnot, he was so airy and graceful. It's hard to say between the guys because they're equally skilled though Marquis may be in trouble. Comfort mastery over body waves and ripples is a sight to behold. I adore Chelsea and thought she made good use of the stage. While Susie has skills, she didn't traverse the floor as much as the other two.
As the judge are off to deliberate, Flo Rida graces us with a song. He's pretty buff. He must be part of the Underground Hip Hop Body Building Club with Busta Rhymes, Dr. Dre and Timbaland.
The girls are first to find out their results. Nigel makes a point that just because you're leaving tonight doesn't mean you're not a great dancer. Chelsea is safe. Yay! I heart her. Susie was chastised for not utilizing the stage as well as she could've and that she needs to regain the fire she first had. Comfort was told that she's never found her potential on the show but, since she came alive during Shane's number, she's been saved. So Susie's going home.
Nigel sums up the judges' thoughts on the guys: Thayne is told he has a lot of potential, they were "frightened" by Marquis' trick heavy solo (essentially there wasn't enough artistic content), and Chris is commended for exhibiting his personality more and dancing with a lot of passion tonight. And Marquis is going home, much to the displeasure of the audience (who were probably booing more because Nigel's comments to him were on the rude side - there's a better way of phrasing that).
Do you agree with the results? How'd you like Shane's number? Any other thoughts?
I know that its a show and they are trying to get ratings but I have to say that the judges got it worng tonight. Comfort and here partner should have left the show tonight. I can't say that I will stop watching because I love dance, but I will not vote for Comfort or her partner cause to me they are eliminated.
Michael | Jun 19, 2008 7:43:44 PM | #I thought they got it right--esp for the girls--Susie needed to go home!! Not sure why she even made it on in the 1st place!! The guys for me was a toss-up, as I really liked all of them, although I guess it was Marquis time to go!! Boy, this is a really gooooooooood year-- I really like alot of the people!!!!!!!!!
Michele | Jun 19, 2008 8:27:15 PM | #I feel like the judges don't want to disrupt any partnerships yet...
While I completely agree with Susie going home, I think I would have sent Chris instead of Marquis. But to me it was a close call.
I agree that almost all of the dancers are incredibly strong and I like them all already. I really hate seeing anyone go home.
Varris | Jun 19, 2008 9:53:38 PM | #Sorry to say, I think the judges got it wrong. Marquis had shades of Danny, and they sent him home. Not cool.
SansMerci1013 | Jun 19, 2008 9:58:08 PM | #WHY can the audience not stop screaming for 5 seconds? I wanted to enjoy the flamenco dancer, as well as the musician and singer backing him up. I couldn't hear his heels hit, nor any of the vocals.
I really thought Chris was heading home after a lackluster solo - while Marquis was "trick-heavy", he really gave it his all. Oh well. I felt bad for him being tied to Susie, who no one seemed to like.
Nonnie Muss | Jun 20, 2008 5:23:59 AM | #Does anyone know the name of the song they played during Susie's exit montage? It sounds like Idina Menzel, but I can't be sure.
I think that they nailed it with Susie, she certainly seemed to be the weakest one. I'm not sure I agree with Marquis, but of the three, yeah, I guess so. There were a few other guys I thought deserved to be in the bottom three, but their female counterparts were so strong it kept them from being eliminated. That's the only drawback of the first five weeks--you can't vote for the individual. I think that having the judges choose the first half to stay/go home is fine, as the dancers are learning and so on. But Marquis is a stronger dancer than a few of the other guys, and it's hard to say that he was the worst of the nine.
My feeling is that Joshua and Katee will end up in the final four on talent, and Twitch will carry Kherrington there on popularity.
Kelly | Jun 20, 2008 6:20:36 AM | #i have to say i am mad marquis is gone. i tought they wanted people to give their all and sorry but in the 30 seconds they each had chris was just running from a corner to the other corner the dancing itself was just bad.marquis should have stayed.i just think they did not want to break couples but give me a break he danced his heart out,and that personality reason for chris was not good enough imo. i have to say susie had to be the one to go she had to be !her dances lacked something!
dancing_queen | Jun 20, 2008 6:56:47 AM | #First off to Nonnie Muss....the song IS by Idina Menzel and it is called Brave from her cd "I Stand".
Secondly, while I agree with the judges choice to send Suzie home, it feel a huge mistake was made with the men. Chris should have gone and a few posters before me have already nailed most of the reasons why. I also just find something artificial or lacking with him personality wise. While I agree with Michele who believes the judges don't want to break up any partnerships yet, I would rather see new pairings than lose good dancers like Marquis.
Sorry, I misread...it was Kelly who asked about Idina's song. Oops.
Sean | Jun 20, 2008 8:45:20 AM | #My predictions for final 4 guys and girls: Will, Josh, Twitch, and maybe Thyne based on his solo; Katee, Kerrington, Chelsea T (personality) and probably Comfort or Chelsea H. Marquis was better than Chris last night.
J | Jun 20, 2008 8:56:22 AM | #I also agree on Susie - I never cared for her & was suprized she made it! However, I realize Marquis wa doing "tricks" but he was thrilling to watch & Chris was just boring to me.
gr8k8 | Jun 20, 2008 9:20:00 AM | #If anyone else feels a gross manipulation by the judges took place last night, please copy or forward your thoughts to FOX or the SYTYCD message boards. They need to know that we saw last night's show and that we were not FOOLED with the logic of the results. The judges themselves have helped the viewers understand talent over the previous three seasons and we KNOW the wrong guy went last night.
Would Marquis win the season? Surely, not. Is he America's favorite dancer? Doubt it. Did he deserve to stay last night over Chris? WITHOUT A DOUBT!! Only one guy and girl goes every week and the wrong guy went last night. The studio audience showed their feelings about the decision and we the viewers need to add our voices. In my opinion, they are keeping Chris at this point only to showcase Comfort (who I like , as well). His weaknesses make her appear even stronger. I think she is up to the challenge of a better partner and anything less is a gross manipulation of her, the show and the viewing audience. I hope my favorite show is not headed down this kind of path. If it continues, instead of reaching out in message boards, I will have to reach for the remote control.
I agree with a lot of what Sean said. IMO Marquis more than earned another week with his solo and Chris was the weakest.
Another thing that I truly believe is becoming a big issue on the show is that the relationships amongst the judges and choreographers has gotten too tight. It's almost incestuous at this point. The dancers dance and then we have to watch this total lovefest all the time, stroking the choreographer's egos and blaming everything on the dancers if it didn't work. The judges are completely unwilling to ever make one criticism of the choreography itself, and I do believe that sometimes it is in fact the choreography that missed the mark.
If the judges cannot speak their mind for fear of jeopardizing personal relationships and bruising egos, then I think they should (a) get new judges with less history or (b) put the power of elimination 100% in the audience vote.
I have always loved this show and will still watch because the dancing itself is great but I am finding myself increasingly frustrated with everything else.
PM | Jun 20, 2008 1:15:08 PM | #Agreed - the only time I ever remember a Choreographer get dinged was the Fox Dance - which might have even been an experiement in how stupid you could make a dance and still get positive remarks. I enjoyed the Fox Dance - don't get me wrong, but it didn't work for the show or demonstrate the dancers' abilities. What if a choreographer REALLY screws up? They can call out the costumers when they make an oopsie.
Nonnie Muss | Jun 20, 2008 1:48:04 PM | #I am appalled at the judges
everyone has their opinion
but the elmination of Marquis was a joke.
he is clearly like danny
fine line fine technique a lot of heart and soul.
he is fabulous.
The other guys are strong too but clearly Marquis had the best solo of the night
men and women!
SOMETHING MUST HAVE GONE ON!
only thing I can think of = he happened to be partnered with Suzie who should have gone
technically not strong enough
more Pussy Cat dolls then real dancer
I think FOX needs to know
i agree
very very sad
