Finalewatch '08: 'Farmer Wants a Wife'
At last, the rather undramatic first (and likely last) season of Farmer Wants a Wife comes to a close. Does Matt find the little woman to make him feel loved, manly and well-fed with pies?
Spoilers ahead keeping company with a deer carcass.
So, it's down to religious, reserved Brooke and her nemesis, the raunchy, multi-piereced Christa, each vying for the opportunity to rustle up a farmer husband. Frankly, I've never understood the extreme animosity that has been perpetuated by Christa, who blew TP-Gate way out of proportion and conveniently forgot that her good buddy Amanda was also part of the trio that "ruined the most perfect date in my life."
I'm not rooting for either of them. Not only am I rather lukewarm about the whole finding love thing on TV, but if I had picked anyone for Matt, it would have been Amanda. Oh well.
First thing, Matt tests out his girls' wifely skills by ... yup, putting them to work. He assigns each of them a set of errands to run.
Christa picks up his rebuilt carburetor, no problem, and then when she goes to pay Matt's store tab, she adds some beef jerky and the ugliest excuse for sunglasses this side of Max Headroom. She also tries to buy condoms, but not only does the store not carry them, but she's informed there's no sex shop in town either. Shocker! Methinks townfolk shop out of town for their prophylactic needs and to satisfy their other secret desires ... sushi!
Hmm ... as we heard from Christa's best friend last episode, she's actually still a virgin (much more stealth than Brooke), so is she looking to seal the deal? Finally, with much wrinkling of her nose, C drops off Matt's latest hunting kill at the taxidermist. She's the first one back and gets to present Matt with the sunglasses. She gets points for finishing first. Matt feels out Christa about the taxidermy, asking how she'd feel if those trophies were adorning their futre house together. Props to her for actually voicing her opinion (ick) but proposing a trophy room compromise.
Meanwhile, Brooke snags three chickens and trades them to Miss Frannie for a couple pies, picks the correct starter (12 volt) for his 4430 at the shop (otherwise, she would have lost $100 by taking both and returning one), gets splattered by fish flesh at the butcher's and grabs some crickets from the bait shop, only liberating one by mistake.
It's a mad -- okay, sorta mad -- dash back to the farm for lunch, but poor Miss B (the only one Matt ever gave a consistent nickname) gets caught at the train tracks, letting Christa soak up the glory.
Each girl then gets a single date. First Brooke is told to dress casual (I guess a purple tube top counts), all the better to go four-wheelin' in the fields. She's lovin' it, but still feels shy about uttering the "L" word to him at a romantic picnic. She does the clutching him around the neck thing instead. He's rather disappointed, but I don't fault her. How often on The Bachelor have we seen the guy push a girl for some show of commitment and then he picks the other? How fair is that?
Christa's date is more formal, warranting a slinky black number. When Brooke gets a glimpse of the white horse-drawn carriage, she's in a tizzy cuz of course she got the "friend" date, but Christa gets the romance, the big gestures. "I'm toast. It's over. I'm done," she tells no one while the camera is rolling. Christa gets all huggy with Matt and visits his house for the first time. It's filled with buck trophy heads and a beaver rug (I don't make this stuff up!) in the bedroom. Dinner on his porch goes well because she lays it on the line and talks about finding a job there. She even simulates what it would look like to wear a wedding ring.
Brooke is dejected and jealous. Not only was Christa's date better, but she determines that Matt "really kisses" Christa, but holds back with Brooke.
After the requisite reminiscing montage during which Matt voice overs his first impressions of the girls and says it's the hardest decision of his life, it's Judgment Day.
Okay, I get it that the town is part of your decision, Matt, but really? Really do you have to have the whole town gather outside with a stage, a microphone, the mayor and the mayor's dog's mother-in-law? "What better way to do it than invite the town and my family," says Matt. Oh, I don't know, maybe some privacy for the big moment? Maybe privacy for the poor eliminated girl instead of live public humiliation?
Anyway, since the best elimination ceremony already happened (more cow pregnancy tests please!!!), Matt hires a crop duster to pull a banner across the sky with the name of the woman he wants to get hitched to.
"Matt (hearts) Brooke," it reads.
After a quick kiss with his lady, he decides to twist the knife by telling Christa -- still on stage in front of the whole town, mind you -- that he had a connection with her, he just loved Brooke, that he had a blast and that he would never forget her. Another nice thing to say to another woman in front of your future wife. How horrid!!
Oddly, Brooke says nice things about Christa and then, reminiscent of a rural Can't Buy Me Love, sits with Matt on his tractor as they smooch and ride into the sunset.
Ugh. What's your take? Did Matt make the right decision? Any Amanda fans? Have you seen the ads with him and flat-ironed hair?
I thought Amanda was the best choice. When she got home, I was rooting for Christa. I hated Brooke. I am so disappointed
Vanafrica | Jun 25, 2008 8:06:35 PM | #I am soooooo Proud of matt!!!!! I could not be happier!!! Excellent choice!! I knew brooke was the best from the start! I was screaming when I found out he chose her!! I've never been that excited since my own engagement!! Awesome!! I love it!!
Sarah | Jun 25, 2008 8:26:34 PM | #I love that brooke puts god first. That's awesome. Good job matt
Dawn | Jun 25, 2008 8:28:01 PM | #I couldn't stand Brooke either!! She is fake and the only time she pulls the God card is when it suits her. Amanda would be the best for him and if it couldn't be her it should have been Christa.
Toni | Jun 25, 2008 8:31:12 PM | #I had thought Amanda was the best wife material, with good domestic skills and a ladylike and sweet demeanor. Matt appeared to want something different, but at the end, he chose someone a lot like himself, who could be a pal, not just a wife.
Blanca | Jun 25, 2008 8:53:13 PM | #I only watched bits and pieces of this show. I think he made the right choice, as far as it goes, who knows if it'll work out. I believe Brooke has the best chance of making a go in his world. Christa would have been totally out of place.
Darlene | Jun 25, 2008 9:01:35 PM | #matt picked the rite girl, there is no way christa would be able to handle him going hunting and killing things.Brook may gross out a time or two, but I think she'll make it ok.She will be just fine for matt. They really make a cute couple.
brenda | Jun 25, 2008 9:05:12 PM | #I THINK HE MADE THE RIGHT DECISION, BECAUSE I WAS RAISED ON A FARM AND IT ALL COMES DOWN TO GETTING DIRTY AND GETTING THE JOB DONE. THE CARRIAGE RIDE WAS A TOTAL HOAX. MOST COUNTRY FOLK DON'T DO THINGS LIKE THAT, NOW 4 WHEELERS, YEAH!!! IT KNEW THE MINUTE HE DID THAT THAT SHE WAS THE ONE. PLUS SHE'S A GOOD CHRISTIAN, AND A VIRGIN, WHO WOULDN'T WANT THAT, IF YOU ARE A GOOD OL' BOY!
FARM GAL | Jun 25, 2008 9:09:54 PM | #I was so worried at the beginning of this episode with the difference in dates that he would pick that horrible christa girl! I knew from the first episode when Brooke said she was from Texas, she would be the one. Even though she's from the "city", you can't get more country than Texas. Plus, while the other girls were freakin' out about the tasks, she only flinched once (crickets and I would have, too). She likes to do the things that don't cost money, whereas, Christa wants to be wined and dined. As a farmer, your income isn't always steady, so it's better to be able to occupy yourself with things to do that don't cost money. He made the best choice!
Krystal | Jun 25, 2008 9:19:23 PM | #I am a city girl who has been dating a farmer now for 3yrs. I had a great time watching these girls find out about farming the same way I did. I was so happy that Matt chose Brooke! One things these girls don't understand is the hard hard work farmers put in. Brooke, with her bubbly, happy attitude will be just the thing Matt needs to come home to at night. And Christa, well, lets just say she would be less than thrilled with the time NOT spent with her. Good choice Matt!
Sarah | Jun 25, 2008 9:29:29 PM | #i loved brooke from the begining! i always hoped it was brooke...i never liked christa though. when the finale was on and the plane thing was plying..i was like BROOKE BROOKE BROOKE!! really loud! and when it said brooke i was really happy!! MATT(L)BROOKE! yayyyy
priya | Jun 25, 2008 10:11:42 PM | #Matt made the absolute best choice. Christa would have been bored out of her mind in 1 month - talk about a quick honeymoon. Way to go Matt - can't wait to see the wedding photos....Loved the show!!!
Goya | Jun 25, 2008 10:25:42 PM | #I feel like true love won. I wanted Christa to win (as the underdog), until I thought that she was actually going to win! I cannot wait for follow-up details - will an update show be on soon?
Alison, San Elijo Hills CA | Jun 25, 2008 10:33:58 PM | #Did we all forget that Amanda was hanging out with Christa? She could be just as Raunchy. I hoped it would be Brooke from the beginning. She wasn't fake, just a bit young. But she will grow up on that farm. He made a great choice.
amanda | Jun 25, 2008 11:29:33 PM | #Well I can honestly say if he had choose Christa I may have had to shoot him myself...Brooke was a nice girl and Christa was the one that was fake and putting on a show, the only thing Christa wanted was to WIN it had nothing to do with Matt. Good on ya Matt for seeing thru the facade!!!!!!
By the way Thanx for the site I worked and the dnag machine did not record the DVD so I lived vicariously thru this blog Thanx again
I origionally thought Amanda was the best choice too But I think because she was so tight with Christa it made me not like her as much and made her appear shallow.
Brooke was the right choice anyways
Crista's piercings were hideous, Brooke was a fake, her tatoo on the back certainly isn't permitted in the bible . Amanda was probally the way to go. Crista also came off as demeaning towards rural life with her constant yee haws, mimicing an area's perceived mannerisms isn't complimentary.I am a new yawker myself and found crista pretty annoying. I am actually suprised he was considered a hunk with his odd-looking facial features. The show did however portray farmer's in a positive light as well-spoken , educated, refined, and sustain the entire world, someting which will no doubt be ignored by urbanites and comedians, who would be out of material if they couldn't portray them as hicks, bumpkins, rednecks, hayseeds, hillbillies, rubes, trailer trash, white trash, inbreds, simpletons and podunks. Shocker, they may be actually normal well-adjusted beings.
Mike | Jun 26, 2008 1:37:44 AM | #Amanda was my favorite, too. She was genuine, and I noticed how she interacted with the town folk at the county fair. That impressed me.
I'm glad others thought Brooke was fake. Christa would've been more fun and spontaneous than Brooke.
Can you believe my satellite signal was lost just as the crop duster was arriving with the banner? UGGGGGGGHHHHH!!! I would LOVED to have seen Christa’s facial expressions once seeing that Matt chose Brooke! I felt that Christa was being so cocky and rubbing her victory in Brooke’s face, and she could clearly tell it was working on Brooke. WOW, some women can be brutal! :o) I was hoping that Brooke would win the entire time, but after watching WHAT I WAS ABLE TO WATCH before the storm came in and took out my signal, I thought for sure he was going to choose Christa. Yea for Brooke! :o)
Audrey | Jun 26, 2008 5:50:43 AM | #As I fellow Missourian who know lives in Texas, I think I need to get my ass to MO and kick some butt. Brooke was so the wrong choice. She was not innocent, just played it. She was childish and annoying and acted so fake around Matt. Christa was herself the whole show because Matt did see her raunchy side. Plus, just because she is from Texas does not mean she is country and she did flinch more than Christa on tasks. I think I am more country than Brooke and I am 100% the opposite of country.
T | Jun 26, 2008 6:03:11 AM | #Whoa...well, Matt got a grade above what he deserved. There is definitely some good growing for both of them to do as a couple..as it should be..good growth..give and take...making it about the other person..not yourself anymore...if that is still the case: all about you..don't get married.
#2 Christa was a ho..sorry. She was a foul mouthed, drunk loser. She killed it with the anti deer thing...the where would I work comment..that was the nail in the coffin. Apparently after all that time on the farm..she still did not get what being a fulltime farmers wife..or being on a big farm was about...WORK? you got to be kidding or stupid.
Nope she would have broken his heart, their family and their home eventually..typical city selfish brat. CYAHHHHHH.
P.S. Hey Mike...yes us country folk like it when those nice edumacated fancy pants city folk come on over to see us here in the country...dog food is expensive and we are always itching for new targets to practice on. :)
Brent Lee | Jun 26, 2008 6:34:22 AM | #I want to know where they are now!!! I know Missouri is underwater, but how are the newly weds doing? Did they get married right away? Ah, I have so many questions! haha

I am so glad the Matt choose Brooke fromthe 1st show i already knew. christa was so fake and just wanted to win. she had no class. i would love for them to have a follow up show. so we could find out if Matt and Brooke are still together.
This was an awesome show! I cant wait to see follow ups and hoping for more shows like this..Whenthe show first came on my hubby and I made fun of it and missed the first 2 episodes, then 1 night when nothing else was on i decided to give it a whirl and was hooked..Im sooo happy he chose Brook, at first i thought Amanda would win it but im so glad he saw her true colors! Christa was disgusting and could never have survivedthe country life, No Brooke did not flinch on her tasks so she sorta did when a cricket jumped on her she got down on that floor and got him, Christa would have tried to redecorate Matts house she did not like the animal heads in his house, and she could not have found work in the country because there were no strip joints or sex shops there..Very Happy ending!
lynn | Jun 26, 2008 6:43:12 AM | #i think brooke was the best choice bc christa is a total bitch and probly would of tryed doing it with one of his friends and she just comes of as a bitch and brooke is the BEST chhoice that he could of mad ever so congrats. Mat and Brooke!
