'The Big Bang Theory' of humor measurement

By Jessica Paff

Jimparsons_bigbangtheory_240 I never had a brother, much less a genius brother. Tonight's episode of The Big Bang Theory made me more than glad of that fact. Of course, my two sisters have found plenty of ways to embarrass me over the years. Then again, I showed my older sister's dates her most humiliating baby pictures and convinced my younger sister she was adopted, so I probably had it coming to me.

We start off with the guys noting the pharmacology department is looking for test subjects for a new medication that could be used to treat... well, Rajesh. But that fact escapes all of them as they suddenly notice an incredibly attractive girl in Sheldon's office. They speculate on why she is there, but a moment later she informs them Sheldon spent nine months with her legs wrapped around his head. Because they are twins. And if that is not inappropriate humor on every humorometer, then I don't know what is. They are all introduced and when she asks Rajesh to repeat his name... well, he dismally walks away and off screen. Only to reappear a few moments later to collect the pharmacology flier and leave again.

Thus kicks off all the guys vying for Sheldon's sister, Missy. And I do mean all the guys as the drug works rather well for Rajesh, giving him a chance to deliver some of the funniest lines of the show and to outshine Howard's general skeeviness. At first, she is just passing through on her way to a Disney wedding, but the guys soon talk her into staying the night and continuing on in the morning. And allowing Leonard, Howard and Rajesh to debate who is most worthy of her attentions.

In an attempt to gain the upper hand, Leonard points out to Sheldon that his twin sister carries the same genetic material that created him. Which rubs me wrong, since Sheldon had already pointed out that they were not mono-zygotic and thus each have unique DNA, but whatever. He's the man of the family and he should have a say in who boinks his sister. You see where this is going, right? Could it go anywhere else?

Of course, Missy overhears part of a conversation in which Sheldon tells Leonard, "Eat this cheese without farting and you can sleep with my sister." Sure, it's an attempt on his part to prove the point that each of his friends have genetic deficiencies, but what is comedy if not argument taken out of context? Through some good old fashioned strong arming... or crotch punching, perhaps... it is decided Missy can date whomever she wants. Giving the guys all a chance to battle it out amongst each other and decide who is most worthy of her using that test by which all men are proved worthy: Nintendo Wii.

Of course, none of them are quite prepared when she decides that none of them are worthy. But Sheldon ends up the most humiliated, when he finds out that his twin sister brags to her friends about her brother, the rocket scientist. As he says, "Why don't you just tell them I am a toll-taker on the Golden Gate Bridge?"

The good:
Reintegrating the opening into the show's theme, as Rajesh remains confident on his psychopharmacological high until the very end of the episode, when he is reduced back to a whimpering mess at the precise moment that Missy shows interest in him.

The bad:
Not really "bad," but I sure felt sorry for poor Rajesh by the end of the episode. Kunal Nayyar sure knows how to pout!

The funny:
There were some great sight gags tonight, such as Howard's "magic" tricks, but these were my favorite lines:

Missy: Sheldon doesn't like company. Even as little boy he sent his imaginary friends away at end of day.
Sheldon: Those were imaginary colleagues.

Missy: (relating a story of how Sheldon turned her E-Z Bake Oven into a high powered furnace) I burned off my eyebrows baking muffins. I went through second grade with crooked eyebrows my mother drew on.
Sheldon: Really? I had thought the second-grade curriculum had made you quizzical.

Rajesh: Have you ever heard of the Kama Sutra?
Missy: The sex book?
Rajesh: The INDIAN sex book. If you ever wonder-wonder who wrote the book of love... we did.

Rajesh: Do you enjoy pajamas?
Missy: I guess.
Rajesh: We Indians invented them. You're welcome.
Howard: Oh yeah? Well my people invented circumcision. You're welcome.
Penny: I'm going to get my nails done, do you want to come?
Missy: God, yes!
Penny: You're welcome.

What were your favorite lines? Were you surprised to see Leonard mention Mike to Penny and in the same breath ask out Missy (I didn't think he had it in him)?

Loved this episode. Didn't understand why Sheldon's sister had an accent though. The rocket scientist joke was great, but my favorite of the night was (not an exact quote):
"I'd kill my Rabbi with a pork chop to sleep with your sister."

AC - Sheldon's sister has an accent because she still lives in Texas. And by the way - she did a pretty good Texas accent (and I'm a native Texan so I can say that!).

I did enjoy this episode, but then I really enjoy the series. I loved it that Rajesh played a bigger part - it was so much fun seeing him being able to talk to Missy and to Penny AND show that the medication had side affects too. How fun.

omg this was the funniest episode, IMO, since the grasshopper experiment (the first one i saw). i just love love love these nerds! and i think you were right on with your rabbi/porkchop quote. funny as well, was the part where raj and howard were competing and raj says how his people invented pajamas (you're welcome), and howard counters with 'my people invented circumcision..you're welcome.'
only flaw: if missy and sheldon are fraternal twins, he couldnt have spent nine months with his legs wrapped around her neck, bc fraternal twins have separate amniotic sacs. im an obstetrics nurse, so, just saying...

She's not smart, she wouldn't know that

Missy was played by Courtney Henggeler.

Good episode, this show just gets better each week. Hope we haven't seen the last of Missy(Courtney Henggeler) just maybe she'll get written in as a roommate to Penny.
Lots of good funny lines well done, the side effects of Rajesh trial medication to his hand movements was so funny I'm sure you could almost read more into it if you wanted too.
Hope we get to maybe see some of Rajesh siblings as well as Leonard. I believe so far we've only seen Sheldon's mom and Howard's mom in the background.
Hope CBS will repeat this season over the summer, anybody knows if it's been picked up for the fall season? Because of B B Theory I've hung around to watching HIMYM which I've find is pretty funny at times I don't feel like I've missed much by not watching it before BBT came along.
Peace Out people, keep it real

My brother is a certified genius. I never bothered. His friends complain that to see us together is like watching Frasier with his brohter set in Woodstock.

A program not that far beyond the realm of the possible. And yes, there ARE negatives to missing stuff while reading encyclopaedias. I did alright. Became a radio person. Does bore the ladies a lot to realize it's a show.

OMG. I did the same thing I convince my little sister that she was adopted and told her that Iwas being nce by telling her because our parents don't want her to know that she is adoted. I also told her that they wil deny it if she asked them. She believed i to be the thruth for over three years until she reaized that she has ospitl picture with my mom. LOL I love the show and never missed any episodes. I want to see how sheldon deals with someone who has a crush on him.

Ron, yes the show has been picked up for next year.

Great ep. I loved the balance that was exhibited in the ep in that the ep, while focused on Sheldon, didn't spend too much or too little time with any of the chars.

This is one of the few shows that I've continued to look forward to the next ep since the end of the writers' strike.

I have to say that there are very few shows anymore that will actually make me laugh out loud anymore. BBT makes me laugh alot!! Sure theres parts that are hokey..but what show doesn't have those.

My favourite line in this show was Howard's "Is it because I'm Jewish? Because I'll beat my Rabbi to death with a pork chop!"

I think this show is one of the funniest on tv!

I married a man who studied to be a rocket scientist, who thinks I'm serious when I'm being wry or sarcastic, and who needs me to explain puns and double entendres (sp?).
He LOVES this show!!!!!!!

I work with a group of guys, that this show totally fits. They spend most of the day on our internal chat room being extremely nerdy, and then they will jump right into online gaming conversations. Watching this show just cracks me up even more, because I live it daily.
