'One Tree Hill': "I hate you!"
And lo, a great cry went up across the land as this episode of One Tree Hill came to an end and the word was revealed. Blasphemy! Cried the followers of the Church of Leyton. Divine revelation! Countered the parishioners of the Brucas sect. And Mark Schwahn did look down upon the masses as he chortled with glee.
You know what heals a broken heart more than anything? Spoilers.
OK, I don't know how to start with anything but the big news: Lucas declared his hate for Peyton. You read that right, sports fans: Hate. See, Lucas finally heard from Lindsey, and his cockeyed optimism was crushed when Lindsey told him she was seeing someone else. Buh... wha... she's supposed to come back to me! I told her so! Apparently not.
So Lucas makes an ass out of himself at a basketball game, nearly assaulting a player from the other team and getting kicked out. (Who does he think he is, Bobby Knight?) He repairs to the Only Bar in Tree Hill to get plastered, and Peyton finds him. She drags him home, puts him to bed, sympathizes with his plight, and then gets this earful: "Peyton ... I hate you. I wish you never came back. You ruined my life."
I get the distinct impression that Mark Schwahn is chortling to himself and rubbing his hands together in Mr. Burnsian glee.
See, this flies in the face of what absolutely everyone has been telling Peyton and Lucas -- dude, you SOOOOOO love Peyton! It's obvious! You wrote about her in your book! Your mouth says no, but your prose says yes! Lucas finally got as sick of people telling him what he thought as I am, and snapped. I don't know if he truly hates Peyton, but he's making it pretty damn clear that they're not getting back together any time soon. So much for "meant to be," huh?
Of course, other stuff happened. Brooke took Angie in for her surgery, and therefore spent most of the episode crying photogenicly at the hospital. She's so worried about her borrowed child that she doesn't pick up on Lucas' pain, and she doesn't realize that her hot pediatric cardiologist is most likely hitting on her. Most likely that will break through in the next episode. I can't really blame her for being oblivious, as knowing a kid in your care just got her chest cracked open would tend to overshadow everything else.
Haley learns that she should listen to me when I yell at the TV, as Jamie finds the card he made for Dan daintily placed at the top of the trash can. Jamie does not approve, and he stalks off to deliver the card to Dan himself. Cue Haley feeling like the worst mom in the world again, as she tries to explain to Jamie that Dan's a bad guy and she's trying to protect him. None of this would have happened if she just made sure to bury the card under the coffee grounds like I advised. Silly fictional characters, not listening to my advice!
Mia returns to Tree Hill unannounced to fit in a couple of product placements, film a Rock the Vote commercial and bolster Haley's flagging self esteem. Look, Haley, I admire you immensely -- you've got a great family, you're making a great album, and if I'm where you are in four years, I'll be thrilled. Aw, Mia's sweet.
Mia also pumps Peyton for information: "Am I allowed to ask what's going on between you and Lucas, of is that kind of like saying Voldemort?" Hee! She counsels Peyton to get Lucas drunk and then divine his true feelings. Peyton laughs it off, but you can tell she's thinking about it when she helps the completely wasted Lucas stagger home. That's why the "I hate you!" is even more of a gut-punch than it would be otherwise.
In other news, Mouth gets his shot at broadcasting fame when he covers the ravens game, but that also means he caught Lucas behaving badly on tape. He decides his friendship is more important than his career, and he destroys the tape. Back to the cutting room for you, young man!
Nathan is working on getting back in shape, and he's using Jamie as a conditioning tool. It's completely adorable to watch him running while towing Jamie on his scooter. When Nathan flags at a hill, Jamie offers him his cape. Seriously: Most adorable TV kid ever.
If only he didn't give Dan something to live for... Dan discovers he's second in line on the heart transplant list. His idiot doctor tells him who's ahead of him. That's... not good. When we see Dan at the end of the episode, he's looming over his heart-transplant rival, contemplating eeeeeevil. Yay!
Also, Deb is internet dating/flashing an anonymous man via webcams, and discovers that her swain is Skills. She's appalled, but as he's already seen her bodacious tatas, he's all for continuing the dalliance. Let the bodice-ripping commence! That's got to be a sign of the apocalypse right there.
Plus, we had water balloons, Jamie's basketball strategy succeeding, Quentin falling afoul of a coach who took the wrong message from Karate Kid ("Sweep the leg" wasn't supposed to be a good thing), Mia singing a song that needs to be retired from television from overuse, Lucas telling Brooke that "love doesn't need words," Dan confessing that Jamie is his best friend, Dr. Copeland extolling the virtues of Brooke, and Skills extolling the virtues of bacon. But let's face it -- you know you really just want to talk about the Leyton debacle. Have at it!
One of the best episodes. the I hate you caught me by surprise, but I saw the Mouth, Skills, Brooke, Haley story a mile away. Jamie is adorable, almost makes a guy who doesn't want kids to maybe have one.
Jason | May 12, 2008 10:52:13 PM | #oh boy. GREAT episode. i was stunned by the end. i thought the previews showed them hooking up again..no?? oh well, i guess if they get back together, a lot of pain is going to happen first... or maybe they won't end up together? (oh my gosh, did i really just type that?)
ahhh, i love my tv shows!
steph | May 12, 2008 11:55:01 PM | #Skills and Deb?
Okay, SERIOUSLY!!
That's the only storyline you can come up with for Skills??
SERIOUSLY!!!!!
Not cool. Writers really need to step it up.
Nicki | May 13, 2008 1:48:47 AM | #Sigh...please don't go there, Brucas is over. The doc is HOT!!!!! I bet he takes Mouth to Vegas!
Mel | May 13, 2008 5:54:58 AM | #Skills hooking up with Deb was CLASSIC! Hilarious! As long as it was a one night thing it's funny, anything more than that is just silly.
Stupid Mouth, the guy has no real desire to succeed.
Lol, is it bad writing or bad acting that we've never believed Lucas really loved Lindsey??? Thus the shock of the "I Hate You". I used to really like Luke's confused in love charachter, now he's worse than Nathan.
It's about time Dan went back to being evil.
As a former basketball player, I find it very odd that Nate is having soooooo much trouble coming back. Shooting a ball is like riding a bike. His shot can't be that far off and it's nothing an hour a day of practice wouldn't remedy in a hurry. As for his conditioning, that shouldn't take very long either, it's not like he gained alot of weight.
realgenius | May 13, 2008 7:54:32 AM | #Finally, an episode of OTH where something happens! I have never been a fan of Leyton, so I just laughed when Lucas told Peyton 'I hate you'. I really hope this doesn't mean that Lucas is going to pursue Brooke now because I enjoy them as a platonic couple only.
As soon as I saw that they had cast a young and attractive actor to play Angie's cardiologist, I knew that he might be a possible love interest for Angelina Jolie-- er, I mean, Brooke. I hate how the Owen storyline just seemed to fade away. Also, I have to question if the hospital could tell Dan who was the person ahead of him on the donor waitlist. I thought that the patient's identity would have been kept confidential, but then we wouldn't have seen that CHEESY and CLICHED scene where Dan looks like he wants to smother the poor guy with a pillow. :-0
I know that most network shows have some kind of product placement from time to time, but One Tree Hill and Smallville are the worst offenders by far. I have vowed never to buy Starburst after this week's show, since the writers made Mia and Peyton say 'Starburst' like a hundred times. Also, every commercial break has to remind us that MACY'S sells Brooke's fictional clothing line.
Tamara, I also hated how the show chose to include Mia singing 'Halelujah' at the end, since that song always reminds me of The O.C. episode where Marissa Cooper was killed. Mia could have sung a different song from her album.
I enjoyed the song but its over used.
Skills and Deb they can get better storyliens and it might of been shocking if they hadnt shown Skills on the computer prior to showing deb flashing him.
CHAD is the worst actor ever I mean seriously can you deliver a line the whole him getting angry was just not played out.
Tyson | May 13, 2008 9:52:02 AM | #I was looking forward to Deb's internet lover being Tim. I liked Tim. But, as far as Lucas, I don't like him with Lindsay, but I like Peyton and Jake better...I want Jake to come back...and as for Brooke, I can't decide if I like Chase or Lucas better...Chase DID tell her to come looking for him whenever she needed a husband. Part of me wants Lucas to get back with Peyton...but then again, where will they go after that? What I really want to see is Nathan and Brooke!! It's always been Nathan and Haley, and that's just boring. Nathan and Peyton way back in first season, but that was a long time ago. Tutor girl needs to go! I doubt that'll happen, but it'd be interesting.
Mandaleen | May 13, 2008 12:59:11 PM | #I loved Skills as Deb's internet date, I was really worried that it was going to be Dan, and That would have been an overused story. Plus I love what it says in the recap that Peyton "found" Lucas in the bar, how can she not? Her studio is attached!
Plus Haley must not have had to hide things from her parents growing up. Everyone knows throwing something away in the trash in the house is a surefire way of getting caught. You take it with you and dump it at the school or on the street, or at the evry least take it directly to the curve on trashday!
Tom | May 13, 2008 3:58:44 PM | #I can't help be be apart of the Brucas sect crying out Hallelujah... my happiness will probably be short lived but I'm glad Lucas retaliated. One more 'they're mean to be' speech and I was going to tune off for good. I'm not going to believe they're it for each other until they started showing me why instead of having everyone and their mother say it each episode... Of course, if that happened, I'd stop watching but still, lol.
Vegas... it's probably one of the guys but if I had to choose from the girls, I'd pick Brooke as the most likely- she's her own boss so she can leave, plus they're both actually friends and they've been relying on each other a lot lately, so now that they're both hurting, it would make sense for them to get away from it all together wouldn't it? Of course, it would be as friends... all in preparation for an eventual reunion though I'd hope =)
Kajal | May 13, 2008 6:51:45 PM | #Prediction: Dan will jump to #1 on the donor list, and a heart will become available just as Lucas' heart starts to fail (the stress of everything going wrong with lindsay) Dan will give Lucas his #1 position. Not saying I like this idea, but it seems the direction this show is heading. Maybe jamie will have inherited the heart condition...Either way, I see Dan making an uncharacteristic sacrifice for someone.
K | May 13, 2008 11:20:49 PM | #That doctor needs to stick around for a while. For once, they've found someone in Brooke's league (she owns her own clothing line, for heaven's sake! Why would she go out with a bartender?).
Dan is looking evil again, and it's awesome.
Jamie is, in fact, the cutest and least annoying child actor on TV.
And, yes, Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah" should be universally banned from the final 5 minutes of all TV shows, but especially those of the teen drama persuasion. It's dead, TV. You've killed it. Move on.
Cat | May 13, 2008 11:39:26 PM | #i think brooke and lucas should be together and peyton should find someone else. as for lst nights episode i think it was one of the best episodes they have dne. car wait til next week.

ash | May 15, 2008 8:55:09 AM | #ooo and fuck linsey her act is terrible and brooke you have the doctor and pEYTON IS THE PRETTIEST ONE lUkes heart is confused cuz the writer drags out the show the previews lied last week to ???
ash | May 15, 2008 8:55:18 AM | #I honestly never know what to expect from One Tree Hill. It was all Leyton all the way in the beginning, then you believed that Brucas was forever, and then it's right back to Leyton. And then... Lusey? Lindcas? Whatever strange couple name that is. Eh, someone is going to die, get pregnant, have sex then regret it, get seriously injured, or all of the above in the next eppy. I'll put money on it.
Jess | May 15, 2008 4:13:50 PM | #i was alittle upset about this week's episode because i was under the impression that Lucas and Peyton were going to hook up. At least thats what the previews showed. AM i correct??
naz | May 16, 2008 8:57:43 AM | #I agree with Jess
----Luckindsey
| May 16, 2008 4:41:13 PM | #Lucas and Lindsey name put together is dumb and just sounds retarded. Please!
Carrie | May 17, 2008 12:08:52 AM | #Emkay, this ep was a bucket load of silly beans. But I'm glad that Jamie is getting a new gammpy in Skillz so Dan can get killed off and be forgotten...but we all know he will rise once again like an evil phoenix out of the flames of hell and terror will reign once again in tree hill. :( Just icky.
I'm so sick of emo lucas weeping over lindsey every five seconds especially since, ya know, he doesn't even love her and all that jazz. I don't want him and payton back together either, though, because payton is a limp-necked, lazy-eyed, slack-jawed weirdo and I'm not too fond of her. I think it is more obvious that L is diggin on brookie once again--at least I hope so. That bar tender owen is a dead-beat.
Nathan is a little baby: "waaa I can't shoot baskets! All of a sudden, half-a**ing around for 2 minutes on a b-ball court doesn't get me any better at b-ball anymore! I give up!"
Way to sell-out, one tree hill! after watching this last ep, I have a strange urge to go vote, eat some starbursts and go to six-flags! hmm...
On the next ep I hope to see:
-Brucas reunited cuz it would feel so good!
-mouth to grow a pair
-Dan get hit by a bus or at least try not to kill anyone
-jamie learning to play guitar hero...NOT
-payton moving away or get a make over
-skillz and hot-flash blondie make a baby...ew
gigi | May 17, 2008 3:00:28 PM | #
all I can say is "its about time!" The whole Lucas still loves Peyton thing is way too played out. Yes he was obsessed with her most of his life, but when he grew up and realized what love really was it was with Brooke. I actually like Lindsay though and wouldn't mind her getting Lucas if Brooke doesn't.
midnight | May 18, 2008 3:51:47 PM | #Brucas is over, they both moved on and they have good friendship. Move on.
For Layton it’s frustrating. Are we going to see something new!! No more crying, mobbing paining!!
I think if Lucas and Peyton back together, OTH will have nothing else to tell. Layton will have this blur relationship until the end of the show.
It's just T.V. people get a LIFE!
