Jaredpadalecki_thecw_s2_supernatura You know, there was a part of me that didn't think the writers for Supernatural would go this far. Maybe I am too naive and trusting for the CW. But I am getting ahead of myself.  Let's start at the beginning.

Well, not THE beginning. A lot has happened this season. But I think we all know Lilith is after Dean and the boys are running out of time. In fact, Dean is ready to take a trip to Tijuana to take in a donkey show before he sets up residence in hell. Sam is against the idea, however, and is ready to make the most of their last 30 hours together. Which is good, because Bobby somehow got the mother of all scrying towers and is ready to locate Lilith, which takes next to no time. Yet, somehow Dean feels no better. In fact, he's against them going after her at all. Which is when Sam petitions that they summon Ruby, who can confirm Lilith's identity and bring along the "demon killing Ginsu" but Dean is against this idea based on the fact that Ruby is also "Ms. Universe of lying skanks". When you're right, you're right. So, Sam and Bobby are back to square one in trying to save the elder Winchester.

Or Sam is going to summon Ruby all on his own. Whichever.

Sam and Ruby have a nice chat about how she's either lied or manipulated them from day 1, but I have to admit that she has a point when she says that she's a demon and it's part of the job description. So, she's known all along that Lilith held the contract and that she couldn't save Dean. But she points out that Lilith would have just "peeled the meet off [their] pretty pretty faces" and I have to give her the point again. Those Winchesters are awfully pretty. She does reveal that Lilith is vulnerable, since she's feeling pretty sure of herself in the final hours. In fact, she's on "shore leave", though Ruby refuses to reveal what that entails, leaving Sam with a mere "You don't want to know".

Sam tries to lay out a rough plan to her, detailing that with the hex bags and her knife they can make a go of it, but she reveals to him that he has a power inside of him that can end Lilith without lifting a finger. Which sounds pretty handy right about now and Sam wants to know all about it. Dean is less interested in what she has to say. A pretty fierce fight ensues, during which Dean manages to lift her demon killing blade. He taunts her with it, which is right around the time that she realizes she can't move. She looks up and there's a pentagram on the ceiling, trapping her - much to her very vitriolic anger.

The boys load up, though not without a healthy sense of impending danger. They discuss the last time they faced Lilith and how she had 30 demons on them with a snap of her fingers. Sam again tries to talk Dean into letting him work with Ruby, but Dean realistically points out that they are each other's weak point and the demons will keep using it against them. I have to say, even when he makes sense, I am not a fan of fatalistic Dean. He's a bit of a downer.  Speaking of a downer, they are off to figure out what demons do for fun.

It seems they become creepy, self assured murderous little girls, who take over whole families, bending them to create daily birthday parties and read inane night time stories ad nauseam. It's like she's recreating hell on earth! And in her time here, she's killed a grandmother, a family pet, has a frazzled grandfather passing frantic notes for help to the neighbors and a timid father asking for freedom. The guys are on their way with Bobby coming along. Which I like very much, actually. As he says, family is more than blood deep and I like it when he sticks close rather then just being in occasional phone contact. Plus, he sabotages the car and points out that he knows Dean is hallucinating, so they kind of have no choice. Which also makes Bobby awesome. Almost as awesome as the brothers semi-jamming out in the car to Bon Jovi. Few things are that awesome.

But jamming to 80's metal can incur dangers all it's own, such as getting pulled over. Which is when Dean finds out he's got a nifty new talent: he can see the true face of a demon that is possessing someone. Like a cop. Whom he can stab. Which seems like a mixed blessing. On the one hand, you know who your enemies are. On the other...you just killed a cop. Bobby points out that it is because Dean is getting closer to hell and they all decide to get a move on. Meanwhile, at the happy home, Lilith has discovered Grandpa's  ploy and dispatched him with a mere flick of her wrist just a moment before Dean catches a glimpse and identifies her as their target. Unfortunately, he also identifies the neighbors and mailman as demons as well.

But we know these guys don't easily give up and so they each spring into action. Bobby blesses a well and drops a rosary down it while the boys go around the back to get jumped by Ruby. Which was probably not actually part of the plan since they have no idea how she got free. She wants her knife and she wants to get Sam to safety, but the brothers are not interested in letting Dean go to the terrible beyond. It makes the coming onslaught of the demon neighbors particularly ill timed. Which is when the sprinklers go on, dosing them with Bobby's blessed water. The nifty trick of it is, it also creates a wall of water that the demons can't come through while leaving Lilith trapped in the house with Dean, Sam and Ruby. I start to think that they just may beat this contract after all.

Especially when, while sneaking through the house, Sam comes upon the trapped mother and the sleeping demon spawn. The mother desperately begs Sam to kill the little hellion next to her and Sam is just about to do it as the little girl wakes and screams right as Dean grabs Sam's arm and lets him know she's no longer Lilith. Ruby is ready to rub it in, but Sam just wants to know what he has to do because whatever it is, he'll do it if it will save Dean. Dean is less interested and he argues with his younger brother until finally telling him that it's too late. Just before the chimes strike midnight, he asks Sam to keep fighting, take care of his wheels and remember what he taught him. Ruby comes as close to apologizing as she can by saying she wouldn't wish this on her worst enemy when the growling starts.

Jensenackles2_thecw_s2_supernatural And true to dream, the hounds are after Dean. They attempt a last stand, spreading the dust of the hex bags along the doorway. Which is when Ruby demands her knife back, as if she she will sacrifice herself for Dean all of the sudden. It's a poor play on Lilith's part, making it all the more obvious to Dean that she is no longer Ruby. Her eyes go white and she admits that she sent Ruby far away. She kisses Sam and I immediately want to drop kick her. Sam attempts to bargain with her, but she points out that he has nothing she wants. And then she calls her dogs.

It's far more vicious then I expected them to show with Dean. He is shredded as Sam screams for her to stop. But she doesn't. She holds Sam back with a power emanating from her palm until Dean is still, which is when Sam can finally stumble toward her. The white disappears from her eyes and she tells Sam to stay back, looking like Ruby again, but he says "I don't think so" and lunges forward with the knife. A moment later the familiar black smoke erupts from her mouth until she collapses on the floor beside Dean.  Sam kneels by his brother's side, holding him and crying as the camera zooms in to Dean's still pupil. Which is when we see Dean, several meat hooks embedded in his body and stretching him across a bottomless pit, screaming for Sam to help.

As you can imagine, there wasn't much funny, but here were my favorite lines:

Ruby: You know, the phone works too. Hey Sam. How's tricks?
Sam: How do you get around so fast?
Ruby: Superbowl jet-pack.

Ruby: You hate being different, but suck it up. I never lied to you, Sam. Not ever. And  I'm telling you that you can save your brother and I can show you how.
Dean: That's you, huh? My slutty little Yoda.

Ruby: You're just going to die? I wish I could be there! I wish I could hear the flesh sizzle off your bones. I wish I could hear you scream!
Dean: And I wish you would shut your pie hole, but we don't always get what we want.

Dean: How did you get out?
Ruby: What you don't know about me could fill a book.
Dean: Oh.
Ruby: What?
Dean: I couldn't see it before...but you are one ugly broad.

So. Wow. I am still trying to wrap my head around the fact that in the last two weeks they've Killed Bela, Ruby and DEAN. And that we don't get to see anything else until September. It hurts a little. But tell me what you thought of tonight's episode. Were you like me, thinking Dean would get a last minute reprieve? Did you cry when he didn't? What does this mean for next season's opener? How in the world will they reunite the brothers without incurring another deal with a devil? And what are we going to do for the next 4 months?!

I'll have no fingernails left by Fall, I can tell you that! There had just better not be an "it was all a dream/hallucination" reversal of Dean's dying in the S4 premier - I want to see how Kripke gets him out of hell.
What a terrific episode!

Well, first I'd like to say I do believe this is your best recap ever. I really enjoyed it.

I'm still reeling a bit and I'm not sure how I feel about this finale. Part of me feels like it's a little too much like last season's finale. Another part of me...well, just can't wait until season 4 starts up. I can't believe they actually sent Dean to hell. And I really can't believe it ended the way it did. I spent the entire hour repeating "so d*** scared" over and over again.

The scary little girl reminded me of a Twilight Zone episode I saw once. Supernatural, unfortunalty, has figured out how scary little children are. Every time I see a little kid on Supernatural now I get the willies.

All in all, I think I'm in shock.

Lindlee | May 15, 2008 9:29:26 PM | #

They had to kill Dean but it was NOT easy to watch. There were many great moments in this ep (too many to mention really) but I will just say that Jensen knocked it out of the freaking park.

"Wow. This is a terrific plan and I'm excited to be a part of it."

Crystal | May 15, 2008 11:47:12 PM | #

Oh. My. God. The finale was...how shall I describe it?? Ahh, I cannot wait until September!! Oh Kripke, why did you have to leave us hanging like that!?! Mr. Ackles did an absolutely amazing job tonight! (But then again, he puts in a stellar performance every Thursday!) Like one of the other viewers posted earlier, I am still in shock as well. How the hell are they gonna get Dean out of hell?? Overall, an awesome ep!

Ash | May 16, 2008 12:11:54 AM | #

The finale was really good, WAY better after having to watch that silly reality type ep. It felt legit. But it was WAY more gore than I ever expected them to show with Dean, and truly I thought I read in an interview that they would never take Dean to hell because it would be too expensive to create a hell dimension. So we can only hope they wrap this up quickly, and we don't end up with several ep's in the fall with Dean in hell. Tonight's show is why I watch this show, it isn't always easy to watch, both Dean & Sam, rocked.

Lindlee, That "Twilight Zone" episode you're referring to is "It's a Good Life," with little 5 year old Anthony Freemont wishing people/animals to the cornfield whenever they didn't think happpy thoughts or make him happy. And that was exactly what I was thinking of when the grandfather first showed up to slip a note to his neighbor that said "Help Us" and every family scene following that. I kept saying to myself whenever the kid would get that mean look in her eyes that they better think happy thoughts or they're going to the cornfield!

Linda | May 16, 2008 6:12:47 AM | #

That was an awesome hour of television, I honestly never thought that Dean would go to hell I thought they'd take us to the last second and then save him, I

Dee | May 16, 2008 6:23:40 AM | #

I have been a fan since day one. I would be POed to even miss one episode. But last night was a real nailbiter. First i would put the old man to bed and just watch the ep. Sam and Dean out done themselves this time. A stellar show. But now what is next? And whats the deal with that demon that helped them? Mark ur caledar for the fall. I plan to.

Jasmin Verge | May 16, 2008 6:27:44 AM | #

is Dean technically in hell or just in the Crossroad Demon's clutches upon the completion of the year long contract term?

as Lindlee alluded to, the Lillith-family scenario appeared to be an homage to the Billy Mumy Twilight Zone ep "It's a Good Life"--a lil pre-Will Robinson as spoiled brat with terrible powers.

nitish | May 16, 2008 6:29:51 AM | #

Was a the grandmother she killed? I thought it was the babysitter?

And how can no way quote the Ruby line: dumb, spinless d@$k!

I about fell off my couch!

smiling | May 16, 2008 6:35:26 AM | #

Typo!

Gah!

"It wasn't the grandmother she killed. I thought it was the babysitter?"

Last night rocked!! I loved the show, it was amazing!! September is sooo far away!!

Jennifer | May 16, 2008 7:10:09 AM | #

Did anyone else think it was suspicious that Dean saw Sam's face changing in the very beginning? If Dean was beginning to see people's real faces, maybe Sam's not entirely human.

Eva | May 16, 2008 7:28:42 AM | #

You sort of missed the boat in your recap. Lillith tried to kill Sam with that blinding white light before she let him go (Dean said her plan was to kill him and then Sam and she agreed). She found she could not. That is why she turned tail and ran. So more to Sam than meets they eye - most certainly. Now will he figure out what happened there?

I am hoping the writers don't drag out Dean in Hell too long. It would change our Dean's devil may care attitude too much and I like him that way.

Love Bobby. Think Ruby will be back-yes. Wondering if Dean will come across Bella in Hell. Hope not.

RKM | May 16, 2008 8:42:45 AM | #

Good catch, Eva. I thought that too. But- it also could've been one of his hallucinations. So, it's hard to tell.

My jaw also dropped with the "dumb, spineless, d@$k" quote. Loved it, though. Loved all of it.

I was so excited when they had the Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas at the beginning. I LOVE the musical recaps!

Can't wait until next fall!

genniel | May 16, 2008 8:47:28 AM | #

I dug the finale quite a bit...and, yeah, I also got a real "Bill Mumy Twilight Zone" vibe from Lilith and the family.

We never actually saw Bella get killed (I tend to like a see a body before assuming anything), so maybe she's still out there for Sam to use to get Dean back. Or maybe we'll see some kind of "Great Escape" from Hell with Dean, Ruby, and Bella.

Brian | May 16, 2008 9:27:19 AM | #

Any chance Sam and Sock can get the Devil to let Dean go? Oops - wrong show! Just kidding - trying to inject some comic relief in hopes I'll stop crying over Dean's horrible death. It's going to be a long summer waiting for the next episode.

DaisyRose | May 16, 2008 11:40:14 AM | #

I didn't cry when Dean died, but only because I was too busy yelling "NOOOOOOOO!!!!" at the TV. I did tear up when telling my roommate about it though. I have a feeling that I will not be able to stop worrying about poor Dean and Sam for quite a while.

Meredith | May 16, 2008 11:50:30 AM | #

I thought last night was crazy!! I cried when Sam got down on his knees and held Dean... It was so sad, and then they show Dean tied up and everything.. I just can't wait for the next season!!

Shurressa | May 16, 2008 12:41:41 PM | #

The season finale was incredible. I've been a fan since day one and got to say in the beginning I thought it was a completely underrated show. Its still very much under the radar in certain places because its on the cw. I'm glad its going into a 4th season. Also the fact that they continually push the boundaries its great, not to mention keeping it serialised underneath with new and exciting procedural eps.

Writers you are truly doing a fantastic job. Cant wait till next season.

sim | May 16, 2008 1:03:00 PM | #

I hope Sam can get Dean out of hell. I wonder if he will try to do it on his own again or get Bobby to help him. Both Jared and Jensen did a wonderful job. As usual seeing any man cry makes me want to cry. I hate to see men cry. Both CW shows last night had that and I was a mess. Can't wait for season four.

Penny | May 16, 2008 1:21:52 PM | #

If Dean is in "Hell" he is probably going to run into a lot of demons he knows. Over the years he befriended a few and they should help him. I am concerned that they are going to bring back Bela and Ruby to help him down there. I hope not, I don't mind female characters (in fact big fan of Jo) but they did wrong by Ruby and Bela and it was to late to change them. Jensen & Jared are such great actors that Katie and Lauren paled in comparison. It's going to be a long summer :(

Abby | May 16, 2008 1:24:23 PM | #

I concur with all that this was a very good finale. It had a lot of action and all of the suspense that we've come accustomed to on the show.

I thought that Ruby wasn't killed, but that the smoke was just Lilith escaping before Sam could kill her.

Rishi | May 16, 2008 3:25:04 PM | #

It turns out Bela wont' be back, the show said she's not returning in season 4. I think the Supernatural team dropped the ball when writing Bela and Ruby. Bitchy, feisty, woman in high heels has been done so many times it's hardly interesting.

Eva | May 16, 2008 3:59:33 PM | #

I have no simphithy for this episode it sucked ass they shouldn't have killed Dean like that I mean its like he was weak or something :( dean sob sob
I burst into tears last night but that part when sam and dean sang Bonjovi that was awesome and hystarical thoes boys have some nice cords! I can't wait till season 4 I want to see Dean again
