'The Bachelor: London Calling': "What Kind of Person Does This Sort of Thing?"
Previously! on 'The Bachelor: London Calling', Marshana's attitude got her sent home, and Robin showed her own after being ousted. Four sad, sad women remain. And they're taking Matt home to Mama!
Matt, in Los Angeles, is taken to visit Shayne's (divorced) parents, one of whom - as we have been reminded ad nauseum - is alleged famous person Lorenzo Lamas. Shayne's weave tracks, by the way, may be the stealth fifth remaining contestant on this show. Lorenzo appears and squints at Matt in what he must assume is a fetching manner. And then. And then! He totally calls his own daughter out for appearing on this show just for the fame: "she wants to be a good actress, but she wants to be a star more." Oooh, snap, Lorenzo Lamas! But then, one-on-one, he pulls the big father act and says he was trying to protect Shayne from heartbreak. I get the distinct impression that he and Shayne don't know each other all that well. Then they travel across town to visit Shayne's absolutely terrifying mother, who may very well be Joan van Ark. The entire family - mother and sister included - is swathed in leopard print, with black roots and polyester extensions a-flying. Mom's Restylane has cooked up roast beef and yorkshire pudding, and later shows home videos of a little gymnast Shayne prancing around.
Then, we travel to Colorado to meet Chelsea's family. Matt reiterates that he's concerned about Chelsea's commitment to this whole enterprise - after all, last week she called him "buddy" 12 times in a row and then told him she hates holding hands. Chelsea clearly gets along with her parents really well, which is refreshing. The four have dinner together, and Chelsea's father starts the protective father routine, but Matt seems to have learned from the Lamas experience, and heads him off at the pass. By the fourth home visit, he's going to introduce himself to somebody's father as a eunuch. Chelsea is concerned that Matt doubts the depth of her feelings for him, and they do that totally awkward "I love....being with you" "I love...the way you make me feel too" thing you do after a third date.
Elsewhere in Colorado, Matt visits Noelle's family on their ranch. Lord, she's adorable. Both Matt and Noelle admit that they don't know each other as well as he knows some of the other girls. They ride horses and she curls up onto his lap and tells him that he's only the second man she's ever brought home. Awwww. Matt's riding skills leave a little something to be desired, and her family really busts his chops about it. Noelle's dad is conservative and wonders what kind of person goes on television to find a wife. Um, yeah, Noelle's dad. After dinner, Noelle's mother and one of her sisters take Matt outside to find out exactly how he feels about her and Matt admits that, while he is falling in love with Noelle, he's falling in love with "other girls" as well. Whoooooops.
Amanda has hired actors to play her parents for her hometown visit in Talahassee because, in her words, "Matt loves pranks." Fake Mom laughs hysterically at everything and gawks at the size of Matt's...feet. Fake Dad asks if they've been intimate. Oh, this is horrible. Just horrible. Fake Mom does the nipple-grab teased in last week's preview. And, of course, Fake Dad comes out to catch Fake Mom jumping Matt. Oy. Amanda reveals the prank and Matt seems - less than amused. He talks about how "impressed" he is with Amanda's ingenuity. Bye bye, Amanda! The real parents come out and are apparently perfectly normal human beings, but I think Matt's ego is too big to handle this kind of slap.
The ladies gather back in Los Angeles for the rose ceremony, and Amanda is rockin' the cleavage! She knows she screwed up. One little lady is going home tonight, and I'm pretty darn sure it won't be Shayne or Noelle. But I'm usually wrong, so please feel free to ignore me. And Mrs. Matt Grant is not...Noelle. Dag nab it! Why, Matt?! Why?!
Next week - bachelorettes in Barbados!
I am so disappointed that Noelle got sent home when shallower girls like the vapid Shayne stay behind. But I guess I'm not surprised. You?
I actually like Shayne the best and I hope Matt will pick her. I think they could have a lot of fun together.
I just don't feel any sparks between the rest of them.
Yeah, that "prank" was probably funny on paper, but in reality, I would have been really mad if I were Matt. Meeting someone's parents is stressful enough, but to have fake parents acting crazy while you try to pretend like nothing's wrong is really above and beyond. I like Amanda, but I would have tossed her to the curb after that stunt.
Cornelius | Apr 22, 2008 6:29:12 AM | #Shayne's mom seemed very nice, but her plastic surgeon should be shot. That was really sad. Maybe someone could fix some of the damage, but I don't know. She's not that old, so I'm not sure why all that surgury was needed anyway, but that's her business. It was very nice of her to go to the trouble of fixing a "British" meal for Matt.
Reggie | Apr 22, 2008 6:33:09 AM | #Hey Jordan, I heart Joan van Ark!! What kind of comment was that supposed to be?
MrRight | Apr 22, 2008 6:36:39 AM | #Noelle is awesome. I think she was too good for the show and for Matt anyway.
The World | Apr 22, 2008 7:53:49 AM | #MrRight, have you SEEN Joan Van Ark lately? If you have, you know exactly what Jordan is talking about. Terrifying!
Jeff | Apr 22, 2008 8:13:29 AM | #I too find myself warming up to Shayne. She actually has real talent; I mean back handsprings, flying leaps and splits, real dancing steps hardly constitute prancing around. I could see her rocking a Broadway performance of Chicago now, not merely as a starlet wannabe. I thought Noelle was blah, and everyone knows the kiss of death is pointing out someone is "nice" as that person's most notable quality... "Gosh you're such a nice person..." Not a good sentence to hear from a (potential) lover. I thought Amanda's prank was pretty humiliating; she just let it go too far. When he had to defend himself from the outraged fake father, that crossed a line to something uncomfortable and squirmy to watch let alone to endure. Maybe Amanda was turning the tables a little after having to squirm so much herself... I guess in the end it made me like her more, haha.
Fierce Spoiler Ahead:): Okay, I live in New York, so I notice nails a little too much, and I have to say the producers ruined the finale for me by showing him sliding the finger onto a certain, recognizably trendily manicured (lighter hues are in for Spring, I wish I didn't know that but magazine titles are unignoreable in NY) hand, while the other girls had last years darker nails... I feel bad ruining it for everyone else though, so I'll say no more.
Isabella | Apr 22, 2008 8:21:18 AM | #I agree w/the comment of Shaynes's mom looking scairy. I am sure she's very sweet, bit looking at her & the house Matt should be able to see what he would be living with 20 years from now!
gr8k8 | Apr 22, 2008 8:31:47 AM | #This is just one guys opinion.
Amanda Rocks!!! She demonstrated intelligence and a light hearted spirit. She really went for it.
1) Amanda - The Epper will take the prize, due to drop dead gorgeous looks and smarts.
2) Chelsea - dark horse if she shows more emotions she might pull it out
3) Shayne - no stable family base and too high maintenance
Oh no! Don't tell me "bad" Valene has taken over Joan VanArk. If drama is predictive of real life, she will come to herself, unaware of where she has been or what she has been doing, give a quirky little embarrassed smile, and return to her normal persona. (she's really fierce!)
MrRight | Apr 22, 2008 8:54:13 AM | #first Reggie i have to tell u that line about the plastic surgeon made me laugh so hard!!!good one.
Shayne:I kinda like her ways , she is funny and seems the kinda person u want to protect but there is something about her that makes me uncomfortable believing she really has feeling for Matt.i think her dad point it out in his actress wannabe comment and u know she is a good actress when she tries to cry while holding her father after he talked to her.no need to talk about her mom read reggie's comment!
Chelsea; another one with the kind of personality that i have big problem with, she does not really stand out.wanting so much to walk on a safe ground could actually cost her Matt.
Noelle: i loved Noelle and believe she was the one that truly deserved being with Matt but u know some like them daring and bearing it all out.
Amanda:seriously, her prank was a so bad one i had to change station for a min cause i could not take it, u let the guy being questionned , feel nervous and all ,wow u do that kind of thing to your worst enemy,it actually shows at what extent she can be extreme...that was not a prank, that was a torture.Matt will remember this forever.
one thing for sure Shayne is one of the top 2 girls...i can feel it
I NOTICED the nails too!!!!
Jo | Apr 22, 2008 11:21:05 AM | #ohh my did you see Shaynes mother,, someone needs to teach that woman how to put on lipstick,, eeewwwwwww
noshadylady49 | Apr 22, 2008 11:55:39 AM | #Shayne's mother's face was so
scarey I couldn't believe it!
Doesn't she realize? Doesn't
Shayne realize? That's enough
to scare any man away.
Go Amanda! The women are made to squirm week after week while he plays them and then gets rid of them at his whim. I hardly think it's cruel that she had him going for an afternoon.
Gina | Apr 22, 2008 12:42:57 PM | #Amanda's prank was brilliant! This is the first time I recall seeing some originality from any of the women. She created a great memory and showed that she is beautiful, down to earth, full of fun and creative. She didn't try to say "Look at me, how wonderful I am!!!" but instead put it all on the line for him to take or leave. If she does not get chosen, I hope she doesn't ever regret that move - go Amanda!
Michelle | Apr 22, 2008 12:57:10 PM | #POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT!!! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
I noticed the nails in the proposal scene, too. Also the way Matt was looking at the woman while proposing - she was not tall, because he barely lifted his head to look her in the eye. And the last scene, when they are snuggling and looking into the sunset and 'towards their future together' - you could not even see the woman, she was so small, only her hands. SO - the WINNER is SHANE.
I actually think that if he chooses her then they definitely deserve each other. I agree she seems sweet but can't help feeling that is the act she puts on, and the spoiled, attention grabbing Shane from Las Vegas was the real one. One thing to her credit though - she learned fast what works with Matt, and changed her ways drastically. Even if you do not agree that she is false now, she is so different that she must have been acting a part at some point. And she is not really that good an actress - she could not make herself cry while hugging her dad, though she did try hard enough to convince us she was. I can't believe I'm going to say it - she must be smarter than I would have ever thought.
Her mother - that POOR woman, why doesn't anyone tell her that she is making a nightmare of herself. Since Shane obviously does not mind, it leads me to think that is exactly where she is heading in a few years.
Shayne actually shows a lot of maturity despite her histrions in the beginning Who has been breaking up fights amongst the girls? Who's the one who keeps out of fighting matches at the house? Shayne!
Nabs | Apr 22, 2008 1:12:06 PM | #Ok...first Matt is hot! I like British men though (love Hugh Grant). Shanyne is warming on me, but her Mom...OMG. Sure the reason Lorenzo Lamas divorced her was that she was a MAN? Everything about her was fake...lips, boobs, extensions...yick. Amanda's joke was over the top (too over the top). However, she is beautiful, but I just don't see any personality. Chelsea, I love. Parents warm, she's a stitch...and to me, the British aren't all lovey-dovey smoochy people anyway..so why are they playing it up that she should be?
Laurie | Apr 22, 2008 1:48:38 PM | #I thought Amanda's "prank" was cruel, power grabbing, humiliating, and showed penis envy.
If he picks her he's got a lifetime of that to look forward to. I don't think he is that dumb.
He IS classy, though, for the most part, and seems to genuinely take the girl's feelings into consideration, unlike some of the previous bachelors who just had their tongues stuck down every girl's throat.
BAD MOVE AMANDA. You let all your anger show and "whipped" him before he could even meet your parents. I hope he loses you real quick. That prank went far beyond the pale of being a prank into being "sick" in my opinion.
spiffy | Apr 22, 2008 1:59:23 PM | #p.s.
I have rooted for Shayne since the time Matt saw another side of her, about the second or third episode.
She is genuine and real, in my opinion, and she has emotional intelligence and social skills that alot of people never get, even when in later years.
She's kinda quirky, but she's up front with it.
The thing I like about her the most? Is her vulnerability, her energy, the fact that she isn't so jaded from being hurt yet that she has big walls up.
I think she is adorable.
I saw the nails too. I hope it is who I think it is.
Regarding the spoilers:
TV can edit anything!!! Just because you see a picture of a mans hand (Not Matt) slipping a ring on a womans finger (not the winner), duh??? It doesn't prove anything. The producers of this show flip things and do "bait n switches" all the time.
Second - Regarding Shayne. Her parents are freaky scary. Lorenzo is out to lunch and that MOM. SCARY!!! If I looked at her mother, I would be like...."where's the door, exit stage right". Shayne has shown some signs of being a trophy but hmmmm sorry pass!!!!
Lastly - For the first time in the history of this show, some woman pranked a guy. It was brilliant! You don't know the English sense of humor. Matt will dwell on this one for a LONG TIME....and Amanda will win. (plus she showed some nice cleveage with that dress - hubba hubba).
Amanda - 1
Chelsea - 2
Shayne -3
I totally agree with the comments about Shayne's mother...where did she ever get the idea that her lips should ever been seen in public....she was as scary as any freak I've ever seen in any horror show....just imagine what she looks like in person....after she's seen this episode hopefully she will see what everyone else sees and rethink her makeup or plastic surgeon....bless her heart..looks like her daughter's would intervene...she really needs help.... they are obviously beautiful and should know what is normal...She is just way past done!!!. I would never make any derogatory comments about a person born with defects....but, this woman submitted herself to this look...if not, curse her plastic surgeon..If Matt falls for an actress, as adorable a she is or acts to be..he deserves the heartbreaks to come...or maybe he has an alternative motive...hopeing she becomes a really wealthy and succesfull actress and he won't have to work again...after all he is in banking...a wealthy wife or a wealthy ex-wife giving him alimony payments could be in his future...he's banking on something.
lizajane | Apr 22, 2008 2:25:18 PM | #I cannot disagree more to the comment that Matt's ego is too large to handle that prank.
Quite the opposite I believe that he was (after the "incident" sunk in) genuinly impressed. I know that I would be. Nothing is more attractive than having a beautiful girl come up with such a creative twist.
So my personal list. Well, very hard actually. I would possibly say that Shayne is outshinging the rest because of social skills and looks BUT I cannot imagine her shifting into a lower gear with her "career" and moving to London. So in the long run that might prove to be a real problem.
I guess Amanda would be my pick in his position. She's the best package (and her "meeps" crack me up).
So what about Chelsea?
I feel that she is not opening up to the extent to convince Matt that she really could be "the one". Also her awkwardness with the more romantic moments would worry me if I were him. Her private "fantasy night" card was a cute idea but I do not believe that this is going to be enough.
And one final word to the fingernail polish. Folks please - those producers did this SO many times now. It does not tell us anything at all. It might be right, it might be fake. We just cannot tell.
Cheers,
Tillman
P.S. still extremely grateful that he booted Robin and the drama queen two weeks ago (what's her name again?)
TillmanZ | Apr 22, 2008 3:02:12 PM | #I recall when Lorenzo Lama's was the heart throb of FalconCrest, and he was quite handsome, time moves on and he is older. Do people think no one grows older? Shaynes Mom surely looked like she fell prey to a unscrupilous plastic surgeon, however so did Priscilla Presley and Meg Ryan just to name a few. I think it was sweet of her to cook a nice dinner for Matt and she was quite supportive of Shayne, are people supposed to hide away in shame when they are no longer 26? get over it people. I have noticed Chelsea drinks too much on her dates with Matt, and slurrs her words, that would detour me if I were Matt, and her aloof side would also.Shayne broke up the petty fight between Chelsea and a few others, she shows maturity and kindness and she is secure and self assured.
