Rocker Shocker as 'American Idol' cuts to Seven
After taking a night off for Miley Cyrus Gives Back, American Idol returns on Thursday (April 10) for what we're promised will be an elimination episode. How many plugs for charitable giving will we get beforehand? Here's the website, in case you've forgotten. Now on to the recap...
8:00 p.m. The results are in and American Idol is actually starting at 8 p.m. What a sweet relief after all of the 8:58 and 7:31 starts of recent weeks.
8:01 p.m. Even more guest stars and surprises? Hannah Montana? Please?
8:02 p.m. Remember last night? I do. I was watching for all 158 minutes. But just in case you've forgotten... Did we get to a googillion dollars? And can we ban Robin Williams from live performances until he gets back on the drugs? I mean, I know we're supposed to say "No," but if it'll make Williams and Dan Aykroyd funny again...
8:05 p.m. So what's the Brad Pitt-saving soundwoman's name? You can't keep showing her without giving her some real recognition.
8:05 p.m. So far, the Idol Gives Back tally is over $60 million. Good on you, America.
8:06 p.m. This Jewish recapper isn't exactly sure why the very Jesus-specific "Shout to the Lord" is getting its second performance in two nights. There are so many fine religious songs that are directed at a general, more-encompassing, all-loving "God." One of those might bring more viewers under the Idol Big Tent (we won't discuss the atheists or agnostics who might also want to watch Idol without being preached at). Uh-oh. Cue the hate e-mails.
8:13 p.m. Puberty hasn't been kind to Zack and Cody. Uh-oh. Cue more hate e-mails. I'm on a roll tonight. Anybody got a puppy for me to kick?
8:14 p.m. Hi, celebrity lip-synching montage that didn't make the cut last night (set to "I'm a Believer"). Poor Cat Deeley. She's primetime-worthy to me. Ditto with Eddie Izzard. Dr. Phil? He should stick to mid-afternoon when it's easy to concentrate on my job and avoid his existence. And Vinnie Jones? He's the Juggernaut, bitch!
8:15 p.m. There were 31 million votes cast after Tuesday's show. Who will take their place on the Ignominious Stools and who will ride out the hour in the plush comfort of the Sofa of Love? America's Nanny Brooke White is out first and Ryan lets her read her own card, guaranteeing that she's both safe and that she'll miss her sister's wedding. How about David "The Leader" Cook? After one of the best three or four episode streaks in recent memories, David has been less convincing the past two weeks. After a discussion of David's pompousness, the rocker's sent to join Brooke.
8:19 p.m. Presumptive American Idol Winner David Archuleta isn't going anywhere. That leaves three empty Ignominious Stools and five contenders waiting backstage.
8:25 p.m. On his trip to Africa, Forest Whitaker shot a lot of footage. We saw some of it last night and we get more tonight. I get it. He's a great actor and he's got a lot of atoning to do for Battlefield Earth.
8:29 p.m. Where's Melinda Doolittle at? Just curious. I have no quarrel with last season's Idol winner Jordin Sparks, who wasn't important enough for last night's show, but who pops up singing a heavily synthesized single with former O.C. guest star Chris Brown.
8:33 p.m. Four fans bring out a pair of platinum records for downloads of two singles, plus a gold album for her debut CD. This is a direct retaliation against the naysayers who have questioned the success of recent winners. I know this because Seacrest ends the segment with the very imperative pronouncement, "Idol works!" Now stop talking about all of those recent favorites without record deals!
8:37 p.m. The week's Ford commercial gets arty, as the Top Eight throw pain at each other in the Los Angeles River to the tune of "I Just Want to Celebrate" They make the Earth at the end. Groovy.
8:39 p.m. After a brief and fruitless discussion of the high cost of ukuleles in today's ukulele-hostile marketplace, Jason Castro is through to the Top Seven, taking the news with the same goofy smile he reserves for, well, everything. How about Kristy Lee Cook? She was one of the surprise stars of Tuesday's subpar show. Looking lovely in blue and professing nervousness at every turn, Kristy is spun off to the couch. That means Syesha Mercado, Michael Johns and Carly Smithson are the Bottom Three.
8:41 p.m. I guess I'd have preferred somebody other than Michael to be there, but the other two were no-brainer picks for the Ignominious Stools.
8:45 p.m. It's former American Idol Audience Elephant Jim Carrey. He urges us to give more money. You know why? Because Bono isn't satisfied yet. I admire Bono, but who made him the arbiter of when Americans have been sufficiently generous? And as an Irishman, he's also the only guy properly suited to introduce by-the-numbers messages from Sen. Hillary Clinton, Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain. Since Obama and Clinton aren't allowed to show vulnerability until the Democratic nomination is settled, the only candidate capable of making a joke is McCain, whose crack about Florida and Michigan voters is actually funny.
8:49 p.m. Randy thinks the Bottom Three is pretty surprising. In what way, Randall? Paula agrees that the Bottom Three is "partly right, partly wrong." As always, Simon insists that America is listening to him.
8:53 p.m. Elimination time! Syesha and Carly... are safe. We were due for a big surprise in the voting and tonight we get one. Michael Johns is done.
8:54 p.m. Ryan gives Michael a few seconds of hope by reminding viewers that nobody went home in last year's Idol Gives Back week. This year? No such luck. Simon and Randy are stern and disapproving. Paula is aghast. After several weeks of singers who were resigned to their fates, Michael admits to being surprised.
8:57 p.m. I didn't think Michael was at his best on Tuesday, but this was nowhere close to his time to go. Randy urges him to keep on rocking. Paula's such a big fan and she tells him to get on with his career. Even Simon says he'll miss him.
8:58 p.m. Michael goes into the audience to sing his good-bye song. By my count, at least one of the remaining men and three or four of the women should have been gone first.
Agree? Disagree? What do you think went wrong with Michael?
And, as always, check out Zap2it's Guide to American Idol.
Completely wrong elimination. It is unbelievable that those phonies, Carly & Syesha, are safe. Not to mention the horrible Kristy Lee and the little pipsqueak AKA David Archuleta.
They really need to change the voting process so one's votes are limited and little teenyboppers can't pad the votes.
Sanchez | Apr 10, 2008 6:20:10 PM | #While I was never a huge fan of Michael Johns I was definitely not ready for him to go so soon, especially as it means I have to listen to KLC and Syesha rather than him.
After the second week of semifinals I was pretty ready to see almost all of the women gone before the men this year and it totally has not gone that way at all. Pity.
Krista | Apr 10, 2008 6:30:37 PM | #The funniest part of this article is the headline referring to Michael Johns as a "rocker."
Pat | Apr 10, 2008 6:36:17 PM | #I'm surprised that he's gone but then again..this kinda "shocker" happens just about every season. Everyone will forget about this in a couple weeks...
I liked Michael (somewhat) but like I said the other day, his mouthiness did not appeal to anyone.
I wonder what song the Top 8 woulda sung for the ensemble if one of the contestants was a COMPLETELY different religion. Either way I can't complain about the song =)
And by the way, Chris Brown & Jordin sung way worse than Carly did Tuesday
Hyvent | Apr 10, 2008 6:43:55 PM | #cannot believe this show! i sincerely believe this is rigged!! michael johns gone, but KLC still safe?? what is wrong with this picture!!
Also, Ryan should be replace. He is outright rude, especially towards Simon. Even though they say its all good between them, can't help but noticed he actually believes what he says about Simon!
and what he did to Michael John was extremely cruel!
Nigel, get a new host!
Definately the wrong choie America. Michael has a far better stage presence than some(the Arch) and also a great voice. Michael you will be missed.
michael | Apr 10, 2008 7:02:42 PM | #God when is KLC going home? David C. was lucky b/c his performance last week was pathetic. We'll miss sexy Michael Johns..
my guess...KLC (crosses fingers) is next to get the Idol axe.
abeauti18 | Apr 10, 2008 7:03:02 PM | #Any of them could've gotten knocked off this week however I think Ryan giving Michael those "few seconds of hope" was a totally classless move. Good thing they didn't send Ryan to Africa. He probably would've have dangled food in front of those starving kids only to say to you can't have it.
George | Apr 10, 2008 7:05:43 PM | #I would prefer listening to Michael Johns than the other 2 women at the bottom. What bugs me is the cheap shot Ryan took at Johns by making the crack that last year AI did not have an eliminaton during "AI Gives Back," but not this year! Boom. What a punch to the heart. Another contestant to the ER with palpitations after that low blow. It's just as I thought AI doesn't have a heart. This is all for shock and awe to gain more viewers. Do they really care about Giving Back? I want to believe that they do but it is hard, very hard. It's time for Seacrest to go.
dimabe | Apr 10, 2008 7:08:47 PM | #Was it just me, or did it look like Carly was trying to force herself to look sad and crying over Michael's elimination? Normally when someone is genuinely upset, their bottom lip will be quivering. Her whole facial demeanor, to me, looked forced and phony.
Jo-Jo | Apr 10, 2008 7:11:19 PM | #Totally wrong elimination. I got the feeling that the audience, judges and viewers at home were very shocked and uncomfortable with the way Ryan announced the elimination. I was going to donate money to them tonight. Now they ended up losing me as a viewer.
Bryan | Apr 10, 2008 7:18:45 PM | #I agree Bryan. They have lost me as a viewer.
dimabe | Apr 10, 2008 7:26:17 PM | #David C got all the rocker votes. When there are two good singers with similar styles, one always leaves early.
7 syesha
6 klc
5 carly
4 jason
3 brooke
2 david c
1 david a
I think the voters (or lack thereof) got it right. I think Michael kept shifting gears in his style and eventually it might have costs him votes. This week just wasn't his best performance.
Shocking. He had a great performance. Again, this shows you that this is no longer a talent contest but who has a bigger fan base. AI is no longer a show worth watching.
Carl | Apr 10, 2008 7:52:10 PM | #I liked Michael's interpretation of "Dream On." I really didn't expect him to be sent home yet. Good luck Michael Johns with whatever you will do after the Idol tour.
Penny | Apr 10, 2008 8:00:47 PM | #Sad to see Michael go. I guess this is about the time in the season that there's a shock elimination, though. I hope he's successful post-Idol!
Cat | Apr 10, 2008 8:55:57 PM | #Kristy Lee has got to go. Michael's was a premature elimination. I guess he'll be winning a grammy in a few years.
Terrence | Apr 10, 2008 9:06:38 PM | #My immediate thought when I read the headline was that David Cook was cut. That, by itself, would have been shocking enough but I was really upset when I found out that it was really Michael.
Although his performance wasn't exactly great, I really wanted to see him to the final four at least.
Why aren't people sick of Syesha yet? Or KLC? (though I have to agree that she did a good job this week)
Steph | Apr 10, 2008 9:07:46 PM | #Daniel - Can we really call that a celebrity lyp-sing montage. Isn't a prerequisite to the word celebrity that you have to be able to recognize them. I Barely recognized any of those people. I believe one of them was Selma Blair and possibly Eddie Izard and Cheryl Hines. Oh and Ginger Spice but that was it.
ANyone recognize anyone else in that montage?
I was half happy about the elimination because I really didn't want Carly to be eleiminated. But he's splitting votes with Cook and Casto. Syesha is the lone R&B singer so she is pretty safe until week four or three probably.
Hopefully Cook will pick up all Johns votes and we can get rid of the pipsqueak Archuleta.
Jason C. | Apr 10, 2008 9:13:00 PM | #Well I am not that shocked. HE was ok at the beginning but when you close your eyes and listen to him he is not all that. Do not get me wrong I am no AI. My favorites are David A. He has such a presence about him. I realize he might not be everyones pick because of his age and the fact that he appears to have such a pure soul but we could all stand to have a little of what he carries in his heart. My other favorite is Jason. I could sit on a beach in the Islands and listen to him all day. My guess is though that David Cook will probably be the winner because most people seem to like that style and attitude.
Trish | Apr 10, 2008 9:20:34 PM | #Well I am not that shocked. HE was ok at the beginning but when you close your eyes and listen to him he is not all that. Do not get me wrong I am no AI. Trish | Apr 10, 2008 9:20:43 PM | #This is where American Idol looses me. He was by far the most consistant with good performances. I didn't necessarily want him to win, but he was definitely in the top 3 at least!!
edgar | Apr 10, 2008 9:22:35 PM | #As has become my habit of late, I don't bother turning the show on until the last few minutes. It was a bit surprising to see Michael go, but hardly devastating. Does he have more talent than some that remain? Of course. Is this anything new for AI? Of course not. Michael went a couple of weeks early is all. Have to give him credit for taking on some of the big dogs though (and I don't mean Randy). He did fine covering Steven Tyler last week ... not great, but not bad. He's also done Freddy Mercury and Jim Morrison songs ... to better effect as I recall. Good on 'em. But even if all went to plan, he wasn't going to last much longer. Next to go? Syesha (who should probably have gone this week). I'm not a big fan of KLC, but she's been doing well the last few weeks and that may buy her a little more time. Also, Carly fans better take care of their girl 'cause she is spending way too much time upon the stools of shame.
Don | Apr 10, 2008 9:42:47 PM | #Remember people it is based on weekly performance.
I don't agree whoe went, but it is on weekly performance.
| Apr 10, 2008 9:50:06 PM | #Kristy Lee performed great this week.
She deserves to be here.
stop the hating.
| Apr 10, 2008 9:52:13 PM | #Carly shood have gone or the muppet.
| Apr 10, 2008 9:52:41 PM | #Kristy lee has been improving every week and she makes smart song choices.
I think some of the others are arrogant thinking they can't get the votes with unknown songs and really bad performances, Carly.
| Apr 10, 2008 9:56:48 PM | #I wonder if Ryan will actually apologize to Michael on next week's show? Or will he cheese it out and apologize to the general public through some stupid ET interview?
I honestly think this elimination cost MJ his chance at a successful singing CAREER. He might get an album out but that'll probably be it.
Trish I agree with you on David A. People can't stand the fact that he's only a teen and that he's probably the nicest guy in America. Personally I'm rooting for him but I don't think he's had the greatest performances the last few weeks. Mark my words though, he will blow you all away with an amazing performance in the finals.
Hyvent | Apr 10, 2008 10:06:37 PM | #I'm okay with Michael Johns leaving. While I give him a lot of credit for picking the lone song on Tuesday night that didn't have a soporific effect, it was too ambitious for him. Simply put, he did a straight up cover of an Aerosmith classic, and for anyone that isn't Steven Tyler, that means screaming and screeching. I'd prefer Idol stay away from Aerosmith altogether as some things are just sacred, but if they must then stick to the ballads.
Kate | Apr 10, 2008 10:35:23 PM | #Where is Melinda Dolittle???
I'd love to know...she was great
There was something wrong with the voting last night! I could not get through after 10 pm and I should have been able to vote until 11pm! I watch mine on DVR becuase I can't start watching it till late, but I should always be able to vote until 11pm!! So what went wrong there? Was this an issue anywhere else in America? (I live in Alaska) What if the results were skewed as a result of this trouble voting? I would have voted for Michael and Cary both!
Alecia | Apr 10, 2008 11:51:57 PM | #I don't think people have a proble mwith David A being nice. It's more that he is boring and every song sounds exactly the same. And if he attempts anything faster then a ballad he completely makes a fool of himself. He may sell records in a Miley Cyrus/ High School musical landscape. But the moment he ages into his twenties he's going to look more like a troll then a cute kid and his albums will all fail.
If the producers are looking for a more legitimate long lasting artist they should start pumping Jason. How come Jason always is one of the first three to perform. He never gets to perform at the end of the show in the pimp slot. David A. gets either the last or second tot last slot every week. Talk about favoritism.
I think the producers will have a little harder time rigging the results of the final episode this year then they did last year by tailor making the final song a song Blake would never be able to sing because David Cook can sing anything. So if the finals come down to a battle of Davids Cook still has a chance.
Jason S. | Apr 11, 2008 1:14:21 AM | #I like Ryan, but he was SO wrong in what he did to Michael. I think he owes him and us an apology. That was just MEAN.
I was surprised to see Michael go. I thought for sure it would be Syesha.
My favorite is Brooke, so I hope she stays much longer even though I think David C. will win.
My husband is agnostic and he did find last night's group Jesus-specific song insulting and inappropriate for the wide-ranging audience that Idol is sure to have. Not everyone that calls USA home is a Christian.
Nancy | Apr 11, 2008 4:19:57 AM | # I never watch the whole show because it is all so repetitive but I do tune in the last few moments to see who they are sending home and what Ryan did to Michael Johns with that line about how no one was sent home last year and then announces he is eliminated was truly revolting. I know TV has sunk to low levels to shock with cruelty but these contestants have worked their butts off and they don't deserve such gratuitous nastiness.
I'm done with the show - besides the fact that the remaining contestants don't do anything for me, the show is so bloated with filelr/ads that I just can't sit through any of it.
The good news for me today was that last year's Give Back special had more than 26 million viewers; this year, just a bit over 17 million viewers - that is a loss of nearly 10 million people who decided not to spend an evening being bored to death...good for them.
Nancy-
What about all the non Jesus songs that they sing all year long?
Get over it!! Or don't watch.
Or maybe, find Jesus!!
| Apr 11, 2008 5:17:04 AM | #Jason S-
You have got to be kidding. Jason's audience will be very limited at best. I don't know how many albums Tiny Tim sold, but I don't think his niche is huge. And he deifintely is not Jack Johnson.
As far as David A. goes, take a listen to a artist by the name of Anthony Callea, David will due just fine.
| Apr 11, 2008 5:19:57 AM | #Michael Johns had more talent than many of those left behind. I really think the judges/whoever does the record deals have in mind who they want to win. Who they can make their puppets and make THEM the big bucks. The judges have evidently already decided who they want to win and they will push people's buttons until that happens. So it's not about talent or who can really sing. It's about who they think can make them money.
Michael has the whole package. Looks, voice and personality. Michael Johns is not a young 17 year old who could be molded into what they wanted. He did his own thing in his own way and I for one, believe he did it well.
So do they honestly care he was voted off? No not really. Hopefully some recording agency will will have enough brains to pick him up and quickly.
I also agree with those who have said shame on Ryan. That was really sinking to low levels to make Michael and us believe Michael had a chance of staying. I am done. It's not about talent or popularity, it's about who the judges can make into puppets to make them sing what and how they want. I'm sure they will be able to do that wonderfully with a young kid like David A.
D | Apr 11, 2008 5:32:22 AM | #Jo-Jo - totally agree Carly looked like she was faking the entire crying thing. She is miserable, maybe her pants were too tight and that's why she was crying.
Total shocker, Michael Johns seemed like he was a genuine nice person, and I loved his queen perfomrance last week and I thought Tuesday's performance was great. And he's cute, so now we have absolutely nothing to look at. Comb over - YUCK! Smelly Dreads - Yuck! and Little David - well that's just against the law! But def think Carly should have gone before Michael. Hopefully her spanx will snap and up and smack her in the gob next week and shut her up permanently and that will be the last we see of her.
I really hope Michael Johns gets a record contract and we hear more of him, coz he really can sing
I was mightily bummed to see Michael go. ALL of the singers are awesome or they wouldn't be there but I thought Syesha or Carly's time was up this week.
On to Ryan: what is his problem?? Do the producers ask him to be a jackass or does it just come naturally to him? First, the stupid, preening "Idol works!!" crap when Jordin was on stage and then that unnecessary teaser when Michael was announced as going home when Ryan said, "this time last year no one was sent home..." WHY did he have to say that? I understand teasers leading into commercials but that was not funny. Ryan's just an Idol-whore. He just serves Idol, regardless of what it takes.
Whew! Glad THAT'S off my chest! : )
Caro | Apr 11, 2008 5:36:41 AM | #I was kind of glad to see Michael get out of Idol because, imo, the whole Idol "juggernaut" is beneath him.
He's got the talent to become a great artist instead of Clive Davis's lap dog.
This has gotten him seen and hopefully will lead to great success!
Caro | Apr 11, 2008 5:39:12 AM | #Sorry, but I never fell for Michael Johns. Nice enough voice, but bland, bland, bland. Every time he performed, my mind would wander. He'd be a nice opening act for somebody, but I don't see him hitting it big unless he's able to find a personality.
I agree with a previous poster...David C. gets the rocker vote and David A. gets the kiddie vote. That leaves Michael without a big faction.
As far as KLC, Syesha, and Carly are concerned, they will be the next three to go (in whatever order) so what difference does the voting make? I'll be happy to see the end of Brooke as well. Another nice voice, but not a lot of stage presence.
Just my humble 56-year old opinion.
Suze | Apr 11, 2008 5:55:36 AM | #Okay, I'm done with AI. That really does it. While the talented people go (and more to follow soon), what would be the point in watching the boring, unsurprising, David A who have no stage presence whatsoever doing yet another ballad? Or the unsurprising Syesha doing another Withney song? Or Jason, who as no voice at all? Or KLC whom, while she done a better job this week, is not that good a singer either? What a boring fest indeed!
Sam | Apr 11, 2008 6:14:11 AM | #Ryan is an Idiot,, and that stunt, with giving Michael hope by saying last year no one got elimated, is absolutely ridiculous and moronic,, not funny, classless at in really bad taste,,, i repeat Ryan is an Idiot
Billy | Apr 11, 2008 6:15:08 AM | #I am very happy to see that smug, arrogant Michael go. Granted there are a couple who are worse singers, but I couldn't stand his attitude. His voice was just adequate. Just don't see the big shocker here.
Kathy | Apr 11, 2008 6:23:17 AM | #Like many, don't think Michael should have gone yet and Ryan's way delivering the news was harsh and unnecessary. But I think Michael's problem is a he didnt show enough personality to be particularly loved or remembered. The fun, goofy side that came out in the goodbye clips didnt show during the live shows. And his votes are going to the other 3 males that all have distinctive styles and personalities.
Unless they start pulling out really incredible performances every week, i really think the 4 women will be the next to go (the order too hard to predict though) leaving the 3 guys as the top 3. Their fans seem the most rabid. And I still think a david/david finale is most likely.
Erin | Apr 11, 2008 7:13:47 AM | #I love how all these people come on here, saying they're through with the show because their favorite got voted off. Did you vote? If not, then shut-up and quit complaining. If you did vote, then get a life! It's a TV show, for crying out loud!
Reggie | Apr 11, 2008 7:16:50 AM | #American Idiot -- Ryan Seacrest.
His stupid comment didn't work and was not funny. He will not apologize.
I think David A. would blend in with the Zack and Cody team. I'm tired of his bouncing around, it's like a Mouseteer dance requirement.
Dreadful Locks or Carly should have gone Not Michael.
It looks like it's going to come down to the Davids and David A. winning, unfortunately.
jt | Apr 11, 2008 7:20:28 AM | #I really thought what Ryan did was very harsh, but it seems to me he seems to do that to the guys, he always lets the girls down easy, but t seems he likes to mess with the guys.
Now to give him the benefit of the doubt, we don't know if he did this on his own or if the producers had him do it. Either way, it was just tasteless.
Also I am over the religious themed songs, and to the above poster, why exactly do I need to find Jesus? I am actually a Christian, put do not feel the need to listen to Christian inspired music while watching a reality music tv show. If I feel the need I can choose my own song and not impose my views onto everyone around me.
Kennie | Apr 11, 2008 7:20:39 AM | #A copy of an email I just sent Idol at Fox:
I’m 50 and have been an avid Idol watcher since it’s inception and have enjoyed the show.
I have never written on a blog or sent an email concerning Idol before but what I witnessed last night was cruel and heartless.
In a week where you are asking us to give and you turn around and treat a contestant like you did with Michael was just plain just cruel.
Why did you find it necessary to give him false hope, bringing up last years show with no elimination, obviously, it was just for ratings, that was a new low.
I feel an apology is forth coming and I really don’t know if an apology doesn’t come that I will be supporting Idol in the future.
I feel this was a turning point, to abuse someone’s feelings like that and especially when the vibe of the show was ‘caring’ for your fellow human being was cruel.
I realize I am just one viewer and probably this won’t even get read, but Idol you truly disappointed me last night.
Paul
Paul | Apr 11, 2008 7:24:47 AM | #Reggie-
I agree with you!
| Apr 11, 2008 7:28:00 AM | #Hey Daniel,
You should write up a story about the 10 most shocking eliminations in Idol history. That'll be pretty entertaining to read. Tamara Gray would no doubt be #1 on that list.
The World | Apr 11, 2008 7:41:30 AM | #I agree with you, Paul. It was uncalled for what he did to Michael. And I feel many others should have left before him. I have seen every show since this started and this one really annoyed me. Ryan isn't as cute as he thinks he is and even if they needed to bring up ratings, being cruel to people is not the way.
Dee | Apr 11, 2008 7:42:00 AM | #Very unfortunate that Michael Johns is gone already. I'll miss him. I won't look forward to anyone else's singing except maybe David Cook, David A. and Jason Castro (sometimes, he's just interesting). I blame this on VotefortheWorst. Right now, I think they have Kristy Lee Cook up there to vote for. Every year there's a shocker and so far this one was it. I'm sure there'll be another or two. this is when I start tuning out.
Terry | Apr 11, 2008 7:49:26 AM | #PAUL: That was a great e-mail you sent to FOX, and it captures what I (and so many other viewers) felt last night. I know that "reality" shows are supposed to have shocking moments, but what Ryan did to Michael last night was cruel. How does AI expect their fans to donate money to charity out of the goodness of their hearts if they choose to be so heartless to one of their own contestants?
Granted, I don't think that Michael was going to win the whole thing anyway, but why was it necessary to give him false hope, teasing him that maybe there wouldn't be an elimination this week? It was rude and classless, and I don't know if it was Ryan's idea or the producers. I would like to see a public apology from AI and Ryan Seacrest himself.
I agree with CARO and others who said that AI producers aren't going to pimp the older contestants, who already have a distinct style and persona. They would rather have younger, moldable winners (like Jordin and possibly David Archuleta), so they appeal to the teen and tween demographic. I think that Michael does have good looks and talent, but didn't have a "hook" like David Cook or Archuleta.
Paige | Apr 11, 2008 8:00:18 AM | #I thought that it was in very poor taste to eliminate anyone. They should have done what they did last year. Let the contestants enjoy the week as they sing for charity. They can go back to business the following week.
Pete | Apr 11, 2008 8:13:07 AM | #to the no named comment at 5:17:04 AM -
This is not a Jesus themed show. If we wanted to hear songs like that we would watch a Jesus themed network. This is FOX, I want to see Fergie rolling around on the ground not songs about Jesus. (Not that I don't want to, but not on American Idol, maybe at church on Sunday)
NObama | Apr 11, 2008 8:14:56 AM | #I wrote this Wednesday morning.
"Look for Syesha, Michael and Carly in the bottom three. But a shocker like David Cook can't be ruled out. We haven't yet had the shocking elimination this year; perhaps this is the week."
Now if I can only pick powerball numbers. Michael was done in by four things, 1, the death slot of starting off the show, 2, he didn't perform particularly well Tuesday night, those last high notes in his performance Tuesday night sounded like Paula's chiuauas had hold of his kibbles and bits.
3, he lost the Rocker spot and votes to David Cook weeks ago. 4, His fans likely believed him safe and didn't make that extra vote.
What is with the booing, when they announced the bottom 3, someone was going to go; and the shock of audience when it was Micheal. he was in the bottom 3; did you believe it was impossible.
I think Carly was shocked by the announcement. Actually, I think Ryan threw her by the way he announced it. First time this year, he didn't narrow it to two first. I'm sure Carly and Syesha, both thought when their names were called, that it meant they were in the bottom 2 and Michael was safe. But Ryan threw everyone and drop the hammer on Michael early, the confusion that followed is I think why Ryan kept repeating that Michael was going home.
I agree that Ryan was cruel when he brought up last year's decision not to send anyone home on Give Back week. By that time it was clear Michael was going home; that just gave Michael and the audience a ray of hope only to be crushed a second later.
I actually thought Carly would be going home, but if the past is any indication her fans and Syesha should come on strong to make her safe next week. I wouldn't be surprised if producers give Kristy lee the death slot next week.
Bottom line, Michael insisited on trying to be a Rocker and couldn't get past David Cook's past strong performances and thus he seemed a weaker performer.
jbw | Apr 11, 2008 8:21:42 AM | #About the Michael going this week: Brooke, Syesha, Carly, and Jason should have gone before Michael. KLC is actually pretty good. I do believe it will come down to the Davids, and it won't matter which one wins, they will both get contracts anyway.
About the religious song: This country started out as a refuge for Christians and until about 45 years ago Chritian themed shows and music were the norm. The more we ignore God and Jesus, the faster we are going to Hell.
About Ryan: Yes, he is an idiot. But haven't we known that for some time now? An apology is due, but Ryan doen't have the class that Simon has, so he won't apologize.
David A. is not boring. He sings with feeling and truly has a great voice. David C. has good voice, but I do not appreciate the screaming he does at times. And, I am a rocker since the 60's!
NObama-
If we can see Fergie, we can here about Jesus. It is music.
So are you trying to be a censor? Come on now. We here songs of all different types. It is not like they had a preacher on. It was a song with a message, like most songs have. It may not be Fergie's a classy song like "London Bridge" but it was a song with a message.
I wasn’t completely surprised Michael was voted off last night. I remember when Daughtry was eliminated, people were shocked too, but it’s just part of the game the producers play. We all know (or should know anyway!!), that the results are manipulated by the producers and they vote off who they want!! I think they prefer David C. and David A. in the finals and Michael presents a greater challenge to David C. because they’re both essentially the same so they’re splitting the fans’ votes - so they had to eliminate Michael in order to allow Davic C. to have a better chance against David A. (who we all know is the “presumptive winner” at this point. This should be no surprise to anyone - this is the way they’ve run AI every year!! Remember Ruben and Clay?? That should answer some questions. As to Ryan being “rude” when he announced that Michael was going home last night -please people - give me a break!! He was reading from a cue card and his speech was written in advance. He was only saying what the producers TOLD him to say. Wish everyone here would grow up!! If you think the fans “votes” actually decide this competition, then you’ve been living under a rock or something. LOL
I didn't watch last night's show, but i don't have to, to know that Ryan Seacrest is a pompous annoying prick. I am shocked Michael Johns left, but he's far better off without the Idol stigma like Daughtry and Clay Aiken. Anyone (like Randy Jackson) who thinks playing a ukelele and singing a horrible version of a classic can sell records? Just diluted... Let's just crown that Disney lip licker the title. I am sick of AI and it's over the top orchestra, choir, annoying teenagers in the audience, and of course the devil himself - Ryan Seacrest. Simon owns 19 Management, and the show, and the artist. Ryan is just a errand boy...who the hell does he think he is??
Done With AI | Apr 11, 2008 8:47:25 AM | #Fergies songs have a message, I dont know what they are, but Im sure there is one is there somehwere. lol
NO to Jesus music on American Idol! That dosen't mean I want to ignore God and Jesus, just means I dont want to hear it on American Idol.
This Country was founded for religious freedom, not just for Christins.
Anyways, I just like to piss Christian freaks out because they think it is their way or the wrong way! I could care less what they sing. Some gospel songs I have heard on Idol have been very good.
NObama | Apr 11, 2008 8:53:00 AM | #Nobama-
Not a Christian Freak.
I am a Christian and it is interesting that songs like Fergies can be heard with there context, but one's with a religious context can't?
By your previous statement, I think it is you who wants it their way or if it isn't it is the wrong way.
Equal time is good.

| Apr 11, 2008 9:06:32 AM | #What makes anyone think that was Ryan's idea. I highly doubt he writes the script. That was the producer's idea probably.
That said I do think Ryan has been a bit of a jerk this season. Like when he called Luke Menard "Dawson's Creek" when he was desperately trying to find an audience. I thought that sort of sabotaged LUke.
KLC may be the next one to go and I totally agree she's not the best singer left in the mix....but the only place that girl is going is Nashville,Tn. You'll see KLC on the country charts. That's where her heart is anyway. She's already a Winner !!!
Big Hurt | Apr 11, 2008 9:27:07 AM | #Brooke should have gone. She is boring and I would never pay to see her.
Deb | Apr 11, 2008 9:39:05 AM | #Even if Seascrest apologized it would just be self serving in order to keep his job and wouldn't mean anything.
SO I'd feel better without a fake apology. I don't think he's losing any sleep over what anyone thinks about him.
I can believe that jerk is dating sophie monk. Talk about hot.
Jason S. | Apr 11, 2008 9:39:09 AM | #I figured the blatantly Christian song would cause some controversy. Bottom line is we have such wonderful freedoms in this country. Anyone can choose any song with any message without persecution and that's a great thing. And we have the freedom and capability to mute or turn the channel for a few minutes if we don't like a particular song about love, religion, sex or whatever. Idol isn't trying to push any certain faith on anyone. And really, even if the show was, its their freedom of speech, and those opposed to the message simply wouldn't watch. There is no way to please all 20-30 million viewers.
Erin | Apr 11, 2008 9:41:27 AM | #p.s. I agree that what they (Ryan) did to Michael was very mean.
Deb | Apr 11, 2008 9:41:41 AM | #Michael Johns should try to be singer of an established band. Like I think Velvet Revolver just lost their lead singer. Or maybe Fuel is still looking for a singer. We know they watch american idol because they offered the job to Chris Daughtry

Freedom of speech/song is great!!
Whether it be a "London Bridge" or "Jesus"
JOHN | Apr 11, 2008 9:58:39 AM | #Reggie,
Everyone is entitle to his/her opinion. To say that this show isn't worth watching anymore is one opinion based on a couple of simple facts : there is less talent, no surprises, harsh unfair critics for talented contestants who are a menace to the presumptive winner, and mostly predictable boring performances. I ask from any tv show to be entertaining, and AI fails that. It is not because I don't "have a life" as you like to say about uninterested viewers. I have standards and I appreciate quality, which is a big difference.
It was Carly's time to go. I wonder if Randy said no. Is there anyone else who thinks the pairing of Chris Brown and Jordin shows no chemistry. Btw Chris Brown has more talent in his finger than this Idol class has total.
Bob | Apr 11, 2008 10:16:28 AM | #Chris sucks as much as Carly...
Jon M. | Apr 11, 2008 10:18:31 AM | #London Bridge is SUCH a better song.

| Apr 11, 2008 10:29:05 AM | #I am stunned that Michael's gone. He should have been in the bottom three! Shame on me for not voting! And why is Brooke White still there? Does anyone except me not see she has only one style? Every song she sings is a Carol King mimic. And talk about originality!!!!!!!! The girl wouldn't know what the word meant. She went down on my list even further when she presumed she would still be there and miss her sister's wedding! We're talking about a week of "Giving Back" to help the starving, suffering, less fortunate people in the world and Brooke's "emotional dilemma" was she's going to miss her sister's wedding! Guess she's lucky she doesn't have some REAL problems to worry about!
Past Hippie | Apr 11, 2008 10:44:19 AM | #I agree, Brooke needs to go!
American Idol needs to give her back.
| Apr 11, 2008 10:47:52 AM | #It was a great shocker that Michael Johns was voted off.
The four that i am amazed that are still there are David A, David C, Kristy Lee, and Syesha. Kristy really should have been sent home a few weeks ago. As for the other 3 they are good but Michael Johns is one million times better then they are and should still be there.
Brook, Jason, Carly, are the ones to watch.
Lori-
If you are talking about Brooke, Jason and Carly are the ones to watch to be sent home next, you are right.
They all are pretty bad.
And as far as Kristy goes, she has been improving each week, which the others haven't.
She will be around a little while longer.
| Apr 11, 2008 11:03:56 AM | #I do not think that Ryan was mean last night. I am sad though, that Michael Johns was sent home. I can't comment on the rest of the show, I just tuned in at the end.
Trupen | Apr 11, 2008 11:12:08 AM | #Schoolmarm Brooke missed a golden opportunity... when Ryan let her read her card she should have said "America voted and, I'm sorry Ryan, you're in the bottom three".
Ryan Seacrest is becoming increasingly annoying, it's well past time to bring back Brian Dunkleman.

DAVID COOK
BROOK WHITE
Did the Michael Johns thing remind anyone else of Chris Daughtry??
Laura | Apr 11, 2008 12:24:12 PM | #As Christians, we have to put up with all the non-Christian JUNK that we see on TV and hear in the music...and be silent about it it seems....but just let one really good Christian song get played and WOW. Talk about persecution. How mean spirited. Really. I still love Ryan and think that it is a really hard show to do live every week that way without making mistakes and also believe most of it is written for him. He is not perfect.. just like the rest of us.

Have a great day.
| Apr 11, 2008 1:12:23 PM | #The only wrong choice is the one made by the millions of bored, apparently brain-dead Americans who tune into this show expecting it to be a showcase for amazing musical talent. Rant and rave and whine all you want but AMERICAN IDOL is an unsult to my intelligence. It's one awkward, ham-handed product plug after another with a line-up of "talent" that caters to bratty teens and holy rollers who like their television entertainment slick, slight and mind-numbingly dull. If you really want to "give back" then spend the hours you would normally be watching this junk and do something positive for the rest of humanity instead. Do volunteer work for a charity, mobilize voters on behalf of your favorite candidate or, I don't know, read a book or newspaper. Don't get me wrong, I love TV and think popcorn, escapist fare is great...when it is done well. AI is nothing more than a money making machine for FOX, Seacrest and that trio of fools otherwise known as Simon "I'm Just Earning a Check" Cowell, Randy "Dog, Dog, Dooooooog" Jackson and Paula "Spiked the Coca Cola" Abdul. To those who watch to make fun of the freak show, I salute you. To those who tune in because they think this is great television, I say "get a life."
Ron H. | Apr 11, 2008 1:44:31 PM | #That's an INSULT to my intelligence. I don't know what an UNSULT is but surely it would also be an insult to my intelligence. :o)

Ron H...you're too funny =) And I agree with your Idol gives back view
To Richard from Puerto Rico, How do you know David A's fake? I've NEVER seen him act outta line even once. Even during any behind the scenes stuff.
I don't understand why people get so worked up about the show. I'm actually enjoying all the fallout from last night's show. And I don't understand how people have watched this show for so many years and not come to expect this kinda thing.

Nannette | Apr 11, 2008 7:11:40 PM | #Is the voting rigged? You be the judge. Just query dial idol and realize that there are software programs out there that can skew the results not to mention Vote For the Worser. I hope not.
O'Mickey | Apr 12, 2008 4:39:13 PM | #What a shame. Michael Johns
is an amazing talent. The first time ever becoming invested in the show, voting, and a contestant. He didn't have to win it all, but you will neve convince his vote total was the lowest. Must be all about the money and publicity this would generate.
Michael you are a class act,
you already sing, perform, and
carry yourself like a star. I
wont be watching a show that would be so cruel to give false hope to a contestant the
way Ryan did to him. Totally uncalled for and disgusting. Michael Johns the fact that music is your passion in life, and you didn't let them
put in their little box,makes
me respect you all the more
May you garner all the success you deserve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!susie
The only reason KLC is still standing is because she chooses songs with "the good old USA" in it or "God". Very few people are going to vote against our country or God. Very shrewd on her part. Seyesha's voice is above average, but she lacks style. Her beautiful smile is why she is still in it. MJ, while not in my top 5 list, should not be gone.
