'One Tree Hill': All hail the baby fairy
Tonight on One Tree Hill we learned an important lesson: if you can't adopt a baby, just borrow one for a few weeks instead. It's easy!
Please don't touch my spoiler monkey.
Lucas kicks off the episode by letting us know that he thinks of Lindsey first thing when he wakes up every day. We get it, Lindsey + Lucas = 2gether 4ever. Peyton who? Now that Lucas is back in town after his post-altar abandonment exile of shame, he finally decides to show up at that pesky job of his and see how the team did under Skills' direction in his month-long absence. It's a cushy public school coaching job that lets you have four weeks of unplanned vacation in the middle of the season, let me tell you what. Lucas is disappointed to learn the Ravens season opening win seems to be the anomaly as they are now 4-8. Skills defends himself by revealing that something is wrong with Quentin's hand, which Quentin himself confirmed in confidence. Lucas wastes no time getting to the bottom of Quentin's injury, taking him to the doctor and getting a cast put on the wrist so it can heal for good. Quentin is extremely upset with Skills for ratting him out, and even goes so far as to call Skills "Uncle Tom." Quentin is a little brat. Skills is obviously a better person than I, because he pretty much let's the remark slide. That's mighty chill of Skills. Ooo...I rhymed!
Peyton starts the episode by reminding us she thinks of Lucas first thing when she wakes up in the morning. Noooooo. I'm shocked. She spends the rest of the episode being decidedly less annoying by agreeing to work with Haley on recording her new album. They play a partial track during one scene, and is it weird that I hope Bethany actually records this album in real life and releases it? Because that song is kind of gorgeous. Finally, the inevitable Peyton/Lucas confrontation scene happens and Peyton apologizes for perhaps maybe being the reason Lucas was left at the altar. The best part is when Lucas tells her not to sweat it because he is sure Lindsey is coming back to him. Seriously, that much confidence in a character that obnoxious is galling. Shut up, Lucas.
Nathan and Haley start the episode by affirming they both think of Jamie first thing when they wake up and finally appear to be fully back on track as a couple, doing cute things like waking up in bed with Jamie, eating French toast, and supporting each other's dreams. It's couples utopia, and I love every second of it. Jamie is as cute as ever, wearing his Ravens jersey and rapping with Quentin, but when Dan starts to show up at inconvenient times he begins to wonder why they can't be around Dan since he seems so nice. Nathan explains it's because he did bad things (Jamie's response: "But you did bad things, too, Daddy." Heh.) and Lucas breaks it down even more by comparing Dan's bad things to if he would have hurt and taken away Jamie's beloved bunny Chester. Haley encourages Nathan to get back into basketball so he suits up for a pickup game with Quentin and gets completely schooled all while being rudely trash talked by Quentin. What did I say about that kid being a brat? Ugh. Their story this episode ends by them searching for a nanny and not finding the right fit (i.e., ugly with great references) so Haley calls in someone they can rely on to be Jamie's nanny...Deb! Hooray! I love Deb. Also, won't the first Deb/Dan scene be delicious?
Brooke starts the episode by letting us know the first thing she thinks about when she wakes up is Brooke. Hee. All of that is about to change, however, because Brooke finds out she was approved to be a temporary foster mother for foreign children who come to the United States to get surgery they can't receive in their home countries. Because when you apply to get an adopted baby of your own you get considered for rental babies? I don't know, but it seems strange to me she would be considered. She will watch over them while they recover and then send them back to their parents in their home country. Brooke is extremely excited about this news and spends the day filling her house with every toy under the sun. Unfortunately she forgets the important things like food and cribs and strollers, but Haley hooks her up with Jamie's old things and sends her on her way. She has a moment of self doubt when boyfriend Owen completely ditches her for doing this, but who cares about Brooke's doubt because Chase! shows up to deliver the bad news about Owen. In case you weren't aware, I love Chase. Unfortunately it seems this is his last appearance on OTH. Boo. We also get what I think is the first Brooke/Lucas scene of the season when she calls him for advice and he comes over to reassure her that she's doing the right thing. The episode ends with Brooke at the airport meeting the cutest little girl. Although this story is completely rushed and kind of strange, I have to say that Sophia Bush is selling it. Also, I really like that they're having her get a child to care for this way rather than having her get pregnant or adopt a baby for good.
Mouth starts the episode by thinking of Millicent and then being neurotic, and I start the episode by groaning over the fact that Mouth is back. It turns out he's being offered an on-air reporting job in Omaha but is worried because that would mean the end of his and Millicent's relationship. He decides to stay in Tree Hill at his crappy job because he wants to be with Millicent and asks her to move in with him to boot, to which she immediately refuses. Ha! Um, Mouth? Never pass up a promotion in an ultra-competitive field like broadcast journalism. Dummy. It turns out she only refused to move in with him because she is a virgin and didn't want him to be uncomfortable about it. Who asks someone to move in with them when they haven't slept together, or even talked about things like whether or not one is a VIRGIN? That seems a bit strange, no? Anyway, Mouth reassures her that he wouldn't ever pressure her to have sex and she agrees to move in with him. Boy, I am not looking forward to the wacky "Millicent and Mouth at home" subplots.
What did you guys think? Are you as confident as Lucas that Lindsey will come back to him? Will Nathan ever get his basketball skills back? And are you as excited as I am for the first Dan/Deb confrontation?

Deb is one of the best characters on the show along with Moira Kelley's Karen (whose guest spot was all too brief). In fact, the "adult" characters were/are always more interesting to me than their younger counterparts. Too bad Keith's dead and Dan's just a sometimes boogeyman now. Anyway, I hope Barbara Alyn Woods' Deb is a permanent fixture now.
I'm very excited about the return of Deb! I love how she can go from lovable soccer mom to Mommie Dearest in a single episode. Oh, the drama.
I had the same reaction as Carrie to Mouth being given a storyline in this ep. Ugh.
You know, I've been eagerly awaiting the return of Deb forever, and I'm usually pretty insightful. But somehow during the time I was watching the show, the thought of Deb coming back to be the nanny escaped me. I kept wondering why they were interviewing all these young women and not some Mrs. Doubtfire type. And then Deb walks through the door. I was so happy, yet mad at myself for being completely stupid for not seeing it from miles away.
Anyway, love the Brooke story line. Love that we didn't get mopy Peyton, Love that Hayley's music is back, Love that Skills let Q off the hook for his comments for now, showing what a real man he is. Love that Nathan and Hayley actually resemble a real relationship at this point. Love the potential conflict of innocent Milli moving into a bachelor pad. She has no idea what she's getting into.
Only thing I didn't love was stupid Nathan giving up after one lousy dunk. Even Michael Jordan has been dunked on, get back on the horse you quitter.
I HATE Lindsey! Wish she would just disappear! I'm excited that Deb is back, and, yes, I'm excited to see the first Deb/Dan scene! I love Brooke this season... She's my favorite now! Oh, and I'm hoping Bethany releases an album, too! I love her music.
Good friggin night, Schwahn: What more evidence do you need? Just read these comments, which represent the thoughts of just about every OTH fan: WE WANT DEB ON THE SHOW PERMANENTLY.
Fine, your HS kids grew up and you think it's somehow interesting to saddle one with a baby. (For reference, see how that idea destroyed Murphy Brown). But WE LOVE DEB, her wacky split personality. She's as gorgeous as any 20ish girl on the show, and has FARRRRR more acting chops. Get her a great storyline and run with it, man!!! She's the ticket to success with this mess of a show. It's boring without her and Dan!
I'm not a Mouth hater like others here and I was glad to see they finally have brought back the sweet non cougar sleeping Mouth from past seasons. I can like him again.
Skills has to be my favorite character he is absolutly hillariouse with his "What day is it?" waking up moment.
Oh goody, gun toting, drug popping, house burning Deb is back!
I hope Bethany's potential album has the song "Halo" from Season 2 on it, I refuse to buy the whole album off Itunes and they won't let me purchase the one track.
How hard is it to find housing in Tree Hill that Millicent has to move in with those guys? Brooke needs to pay her more and she needs to get her own place.
For real, why is Milicent's only option moving in with Mouth? If she wants to remain a virgin for a little longer, perhaps moving in with the boyfriend isn't the wisest decision on her part. Did we even know that she did not have a viable living situation?
I noticed Barbara Alyn Woods in the opening credits, so I can't say I was surprised, but I sure was glad.
