'Desperate Housewives': Dylan's father is gonna need you to come in Sunday, too.
Tonight's episode of Desperate Housewives was much like any other--lies, betrayal, selfishness, and regret. However, there were a couple major plot twists that managed to keep things somewhat interesting, if not extremely. Oh, and I think the passive aggressive-o-meter hit a new high, thanks to Katherine's impressive efforts at manipulating Bree into planning another party with her. Well-played, Katherine--you've managed to move "passive aggressive" into an arena that's almost overtly aggressive, but without all the messiness. Definitely a noteworthy event. (The noteworthy events below contain spoilers.)
Lynette: Well, a huge shout out goes to Tony, the first reader to predict the true identity of the arsonists in the comments. The twins burned down the restaurant because they heard Tom saying that Rick was going to take Lynette away. And because they were a couple of budding psychopaths looking for an excuse to cause mayhem. I mean, seriously. They're adorable, but arson at such a young age is probably a sign of much worse to come, and identical serial killers could totally go around giving each other alibis! Think of the crime potential! Those two need some time in juvie, stat. And Tom and Lynette need some marriage counseling, stat, because they have some serious trust issues going on. Obvs.
Susan/Bree: Okay, I LOVED Bree's carefully explained strategy for boxing up her emotions. I also now understand more than ever why she became an alcoholic. Also, given Susan's crazy hormonal volcano status, I'm impressed that she didn't erupt all over Orson more than she actually did once she found out that he ran over Mike--I know his marriage is over and all, but Orson should consider himself lucky. Mad props to Mike for forgiving Orson, and mad props to Bree for not forgiving him (at least for now). I mean, god, if anyone would be weirdly understanding about a situation in which you had such a need to control the outcome that you resorted to attempted manslaughter, it would be Bree, the biggest control freak ever. And he still didn't tell her!
Katherine/Dylan: Well, anyone who follows casting news would have recognized the police officer as Dylan's father immediately, since Gary Cole was announced as having the role a few weeks ago. So the scene where he pulls her over and is caressing her picture and all didn't seem quite as creepy to me as it was probably meant to, since I already knew she was his daughter. I'm totally not on board with him, though. I mean, the phrase "she gave as good as she got" in the context of domestic violence is kind of a red flag, no? And, of course, we had the tense violins of villainy playing in the background when he got Dylan to agree to keep their newfound relationship secret from Katherine. Oh, Dylan. So stupidly trusting. And if Dylan's father is all fine and well, then who's in the secret woodland grave?
Gabby: Sigh. Okay, maybe it's just because I'm an animal lover, but I definitely ceased to find Gabby's selfishness endearing this week. I'm totally with Edie, in fact--Gabby needs to treat Carlos with some respect, or release him out into the wild to find a woman who will. Stealing someone's seeing-eye dog = NOT COOL. Even if the dog is kind of replacing you. And even if you really wanted a helper monkey. (Which, yeah right. The day Gabby gets any kind of animal that requires diaper-changing is the day Gabby is no longer Gabby.) To be fair, though, maybe I'm expecting too much. Maybe I should just be happy that Gabby didn't poison Roxie, or something.
Is Gary Cole really Dylan's father? Is he up to something nefarious?
Bree needs to forgive Orson. She covered up Andrew's hit and run over Mama Solis. IMO, she's being a hypocrite.
Morgan | Apr 27, 2008 9:49:39 PM | #Whatever happened to the gay couple? Haven't heard anything about them, and I thought one of them knew a secret about Katherine. Unless that secret was about her current "ex"-husband and that psycho girl patient that died in the tornado. I thought the secret had more to it than that...
gus | Apr 27, 2008 9:51:43 PM | #Yes, I know they explained away Mike's son as now having millions, but I sort of miss seeing Zack, part evil/sly, part innocent, or at least I feel slightly cheated out of some father/son/cucko stepmon/lusting after stepsister Julie drama, but this show has never been kind to the kids, Andrew, Danielle, Zack, the twins, Edie's Trevor, all screwed up or disappeared.
John | Apr 28, 2008 6:25:10 AM | #Boy, what a continuity boo-boo regarding the newspaper photograph of Katherine and Dylan. Two weeks ago at the end, you see the creepy hand red-cirle the photograph of Dylan, then last night's episode while panning down inside his patrol care, you see the red circle was around both Katherine and Dylan. A slip up, unless he gets lots of papers and like to circle things.
John F. | Apr 28, 2008 6:58:12 AM | #ok, this was the third episode back post strike and i do not feel DH has recovered. I have been giving my shows 2 episode graces to get back to normal but i dont feel DH has. I find myself just watching to find the plot twist and to figure out what Katherines secret is...not really enjoying it so much. Although i did like the stuff between lynette and tom. Tom is my fav on the show and i truly believed that he didnt set the place on fire....hello...its tom. The scavo kids i find that funny that they did and a little creepy! I didn't like that the story of orson hitting mike just ends the way it did with the exception of bree having to deal with it as far as her marriage goes.....It seems cheap especially for those of us that invested so much time last year to the story. I don't know....i am still intrigued enough to keep watching but....i'm getting bored
MEEKS | Apr 28, 2008 8:42:07 AM | #Morgan, I don't think Bree can't forgive the hit and run. I think she is unwilling to forgive him for keeping it a secret. Andrew told Bree right away that he hit Mama Solis. 2 completely different situations.
I agree with Meeks that it seems like DH has lost its touch. It appeared in the beginning of this year that it was going to be a season shock full of surprise and intrigue - well that lasted about 2 eps. Now I too am just watching to see what the mystery was. I'm not sure if I'll be next in the fall.
Rishi | Apr 28, 2008 9:55:17 AM | #I still find it kind of creepy the way Dylan's dad (if it is her dad) acts toards her.
EG | Apr 28, 2008 10:35:35 AM | #I always wondered when they were going to deal with the Orson hitting Mike thing. And I always dreaded it because I love Orson. He and Bree are just so perfect together. I hope they find a way to keep him around and with Bree.
Sue | Apr 28, 2008 10:44:21 AM | #Anyone else think Gary Cole isn't really a cop in this? After all, the way we saw his hand in last week's episode, he didn't really strike me as being a cop. Plus, if he was a cop, wouldn't he know where Dylan lives and why would Katherine ever return if he was a cop when she left in a hurry?
And seeing as he's not dead, what was all that stuff about Katherine forcing Adam to lie about the father when Dylan found the note saying Katherine had killed the father?
And who's in that grave that Kathering was crying next to two episodes back?
The thing about the twins being responsible for burning down Rick's pizzeria doesn't make sense. Lynette and Tom were at that function and so they would have hired someone (likely Mrs. McClusky) to babysit. So are they telling me that those twins could have gotted what they needed to set the fire, get on their bikes, ride to the other side of town, set fire to the pizzeria then ride back home all without Mrs. McClusky knowing? And of course someone would have had to babysit considering there's a four year old child in the house. Lynnette and Tom know better than to leave a child that young along with those brats.
Francine Fishpaw | Apr 28, 2008 1:51:49 PM | #Does Gabrielle have a single redeeming quality? I am so utterly sick of her spoiled, rich-girl shtick. Her sense of entitlement rivals Paris Hilton's...and, as much as I loathe the twittering, vapid, untalented waif, at least Paris has the genes that come along with self-entitlement. Gabrielle is crossing the precipice and I don't know if the writer's can bring her back.
The twin arson thing does bring up potential for an interesting story, but what kind of idiot babysitter would not notice that these two loud brats weren't at home to begin with?
Am I wrong, or did Mike push Orson off of a building? Might that be the reason he so easily forgives?
Bree is the best thing about this show.
Michael | Apr 28, 2008 3:38:53 PM | #Michael, I'm sick to death of Gabby too. She's as unlikeable as Lynnette has become in the past year or so. I can't stand either of them. You know it's strange when the show's two biggest bitches - Katherine and Edie - end up being the most likeable!
Francine Fishpaw | Apr 28, 2008 4:11:17 PM | #Regarding who's in Katherine's grave. My theory is Dylan's not Dylan. I think the real Dylan is the one in the grave, I notice the grave was kinda small. Back in the season 4 premiere when Julie said to her mom 'thats not the same girl I knew', I believe she's right, I think Dylan was kidnapped as a child and that's why Katherine took off in a hurry.
Just a theory...
I think we all can agree that Tom & Lynette's twins are mischievous, but they've never struck me as particularly malicious. Personally, I'm betting on Kayla having a larger role in the fire that destroyed Rick's place. After already losing her mother, she most likely has major abandonment issues, and I could easily see her being manipulative enough to put the idea into the twins' heads in an attempt to keep her hands clean.
