'Desperate Housewives': Live nude sleepwalkers!

Marciacross_desperatehousewives_s4_Things heated up this week on Desperate Housewives as old mysteries bubbled back up to the surface, and new ones began to take shape. Also, Kyle MacLachlan was naked and Gabby fought a dude in a wheelchair. So, um, something for everyone, right?  Riiight. (Spoilers ahead...)

Orson: "A man," it seems, "is only as sick as his secrets." At least, according to the not-so-inspirational sign at Mike's rehab facility. And since Orson is now sleepwalking naked, mumbling guilty stuff about hitting Mike with his car, we can assume that he's pretty sick thanks to his pretty big secrets.

So what's the deal, here? This plot is fairly old by Desperate Housewives' fast-paced standards. Do we think that they ran out of good stuff for this season, and are fishing around for loose ends from past seasons to fill out the remaining episodes? Or was the long-term plan always for Orson to eventually go crazy with guilt?  Either way, I'm glad it was Julie who overheard the actual confession of hit-and-run guilt and not Susan, who would probably concoct a crazy scheme involving powdered Ambien, a hidden tape recorder, and naked blackmail photos. And a pratfall.

Bree and Katherine: You know, this plot reeeally didn't go where I thought it was going to go (murder by salad fork). So props for keeping things interesting, Desperate Housewives. While co-hosting a black tie fundraiser, Bree and Katherine go from scary Stepford friends, to scary passive-aggressive rivals, to scary aggressive rivals (serving someone spoiled dip is never okay in my book, Bree), to scary Stepford friends again thanks to Katherine's mad pop psychology skillz. But for reals, is anyone else terrified that if these two are working together, rather than against each other, they might actually achieve world domination? Because seriously. Yikes.

Gabby and Carlos: I know I keep saying it, but I totally love these two. I think it might be because I'm a bit jealous of how selfish and self-serving Gabby is able to be, though I hate to admit it. Always getting your way looks like so much fun! I mean, she got into a physical altercation with a dude in a wheelchair over a handicapped parking space. There aren't enough italics in the world to express the craziness of that. And then she somehow manages to go from leaving Carlos in the car as she gets her manicure done just so she can have a good parking space, to giving a heartwrenching, and incredibly sympathetic speech about her life as the wife of a blind man. Eva Longoria is seriously underappreciated, if you ask me. I don't know if anyone else could pull off selfish and sympathetic in practically the same breath like she can.

Felicityhuffman_desperatehousewives Lynette and Tom: Oh, dear. So Rick, Lynette's former something and Tom's former restaurant manager, is opening up a competing restaurant on the same block. Tom handles it the mature way, of course, by throwing a brick through the dude's window. And then possibly burning the place down. But probably not, since it's Desperate Housewives and things generally aren't what they seem. I don't have any strong feelings either way at this point, but since it's Lynette's plotline I'm giving it a pre-emptive thumbs down. You know, statistically speaking.

Dylan: Wooooah. So just when Julie convinces Dylan to lighten up and chill out on all the "my dad was murdered, probably by my mom" stuff, Dylan manages to attract the attention of a crazy, red sharpie-wielding stalker! Is it her dad, not dead after all? Someone from Chicago who magically managed to get a copy of the Fairview paper? Probably not a fellow high schooler, given the beer cans and such. Yay, new mystery! (Or related mystery. Either way, yay!)

So, did Tom finally snap and burn down Rick's? Who is Dylan's stalker? Will Bree and Katherine remain BFF?

I love Rick! I'm glad he's back.

I thought it was fairly obvious who burned Rick's place ... the kids. At least, that's the way I read it. They overheard Lynette and Tom fighting and decided to take action.

Oooh, good call, Tony! That hadn't occurred to me, but I bet you're right.

Liz | Apr 21, 2008 4:36:02 AM | #

WOW..I did not think of that Tony..Good call! I thought Rick might have done it himself to frame Tom maybe but I like your theroy.

I thought Rick did it himself as well. (Frame Tom to get him out of the picture, collect the insurance money and use it to seduce Lynette.) I don't know how I feel about it being the kids, although it's no dumber a storyline than Tom throwing the brick through the window in the first place, so i think I could live with it.

Judging from the previews it looks like Bree and Katherine are back to their old ways next week. Which makes this the sixth or seventh time we've seen them learn a valuable lesson about friendship and then completely ignore it. I'm personally beginning to tire with this relationship. It's time for them to choose sides!

And on a side note to Liz: I thought that it was pretty clear that Bree intended to tell Katherine that the dip was spoiled, but Katherine insisted on "tasting" all of the food. Really, she brought it on herself (I'm still not sure why Bree didn't bring that up, instead of caving at the end of the episode.) And to be honest, Katherine was particularly bitchy last night. Deliciously so.

I was amused by the little nod to the San Antonio Spurs!
Great call on the kids being the culprits. Wish I had thought of that, myself. I may pretend I did with others!
The thought of Bree & Katherine pairing up is REALLY scary!
I think it's going to be Dylan's dad who was marking the photo. Of course, I'm one of those who thinks she isn't Dylan #1, so maybe it could be whomever she was stolen from.

When I heard that Gary Cole was going to play Katherine's ex-hubby, I was disappointed because that guy is dull as dishwater. Then, last week, when we saw what seemed to be Katherine killing the abusive ex-hubby, I figured Gary's role was going to be a flashback. WRONG! He's alive. And now I see why they wanted Ray Liotta for the role. He's going to be looney tunes.

Now I'm wondering who the hell that is in the hidden grave Katherine was crying over last week.

Could it be the real Dylan? But Dana signed a five year contract so it can't be the real Dylan in the grave otherwise Katherine would go to jail. Unless they come up with some bizarre way of allowing Kathering to bury her daughter in the bushes and kidnap another.

Good to see Shawn Pyfrom back again. He's way under used and that's ridiculous considering he's good for some vindictive behavior and cutting lines. When they bother to give him anything to do. Too bad they gave up making him a bastard and want to make him boring just so they don't piss off the gays.

I'm hoping Carlos isn't blind permanently because they just about used about that entire storyline in the past two weeks. How many times are they going to be able to go to the blind well each week?

Tom possibly burning down Rick's pizzeria is an interesting turn.

Good to see Kyle MacLachlan got something to do. Especially considering he's used to playing leads and on this show he gets little to do.

I'm so sick of Lynette and they make Felicity Huffman look like shit all the time. A couple of times last night she looked good but then she'd take off her wig and she'd be made up to look like something that got dredged out of a swamp. I can't imagine she enjoys being made to look so ugly.

Could the person, the chef/caterer who told Bree about the spoiled dip, known the dip was spoiled because Tom had already gotten sick from sneaking a sample of it? If so, then Tom's alibi could be anyone who might have seen him doing homage to the porcelain throne in the men's room, just as Bree witnessed Katherine doing. Lynette could have only witnessed Tom's prolonged return from the men's room because he became ill too suddenly to take the time to stop and tell anyone else where he was going besides warning the chef/caterer.

So sad to read Housewives lost all there fall ratings momentum and are down nearly 4 million viewers. As an avid viewer last night's episode was on the weak side !!! Who cares Orson hit Mike with his car! I'm only now a little depressed he didn't kill him now that would have caused some emotional distress.
Loved the Bree/Kathryn "we are the same person" speech and Gabi's "woe is me" speech to Carlos. Eva Longoria-Parker's comedic and dramatic edge is very well defined and makes what should be an unlikable character the complete opposite. I doubt Tom burnt down Rick's resturant but i can see Rick setting the fire himself only to blame Tom...
And the red marker at the end reminded me of Housewives Season 1... just the right touch of mystery at just the right moment...

I love Orson! So glad to see him have a story now! Same with Tom, my other favorite husband. Can't wait to see how that plays out. Love Gaby, she's so good and Eva is an amazing actress.

I can go on but I love this episode.

Kyra | Apr 21, 2008 6:30:48 PM | #

How interesting that you got suckered in my something about nude men. Just like the same DH fans will go see Srah Marshall because Entertainment weekly boasted it had male full frontal. I went into the wrong business. Women today are easier to con than ever. Empowerment rules --- other peoples' bank accounts. Good.

jason | Apr 21, 2008 8:07:18 PM | #

Ok, does anyone else think this jason character is making any sense? I'm thinking not.

Anyway, loved the show! Didn't you guys love Bree and Orson teasing Susan about "naughty" dreams? Too funny! I can't wait to see how the Dylan storyline pans out. Katherine...I just dont like her, and I don't agree that she and Bree are alike. Bree may be an OCD control freak, but she is likeable. Katherine just seems conniving and sometimes, downright mean! But, it makes for good t.v.!

Can't wait 'til the next show!

Please...

Did ANYONE notice the two product placements (intentional or not) for In-N-Out Burger in that episode???

I'm from the LA area and noticed the In-N-Out beverage cup in Carlos' hand after Gabby finds him with the kid and he says "he was hungry and got a burger."

Then a second time at the very end of the ep when the a "crazy, red sharpie-wielding stalker" where there's another In-N-Out Burger cup (along with the other junk) as he clears his table with his arm.

Someone tell me they caught that as well.

I don't have a problem with revisiting the Orson/Mike runover plot, in fact I hate it when shows leave something that huge hanging forever. Soaps do that all the time, ignoring what brought a character on in the first place and pretending it never happened. I find that cheap and uncreative.
