Finalewatch: 'Kyle XY' prom night semi-unspectacular

Amanda It was truly a magical night on Kyle XY because 1) it made cynical Lori a romantic, 2) Jessi finally began to think less selfishly before acting and 3) something bad happens to Ablanda!

Spoilers ahead, just like the moment of truth at the end of prom night -- not that I'd know!

Prom, prom, prom. A show of hands of people who remember their proms fondly? I went stag to mine, wore a short green cocktail dress, got a corsage from four friends and had a blast, unlike the people who scrambled to find dates they would rather forget. Not that I'm being snide or judgmental.

Let's just say, that expectations of what should be can spoil the evening, as Kyle learned from Nicole, despite his copious research. And I must admit, my expectations for this episode were a bit let down. I expected a stronger conspiracy story intertwined with the prom story, but alas, it was mainly prom angst, touchy-feely stuff and a rather expected ending. Let's sum it up, shall we?

Jessi - She gets along with Sarah like a house on -- err, slightly warmed by friction. Honestly, where is the chemistry? They should either be finishing each other's sentences or fighting because of their similarities. I didn't expect lukewarm. Ugh. Sarah wants to leave Seattle, and since that's the best hope of "family" Jessi can expect, she's reluctantly leaving. But she still does Kyle a good turn, finally learning what it is to put someone else before herself.

Kyle - Our hero is all flustered to make this the Best. Prom. Ever. but luckily he doesn't have to contend with the bye-bye unicorn, giving up his virginity issue. After a disastrous mistake after picking up Ablanda's dress, he gets help from Jessi and a smoldering advice session (whew!) from Nicole. Honestly, the hot women are everywhere and he wastes his ardor on Amanda? After bidding adieu to Adam (who says Ladnoc is watching), he has a nice cryptic meeting with Tom Foss who sends his messages of doom yet again.

Lori_prom Lori - Flirtation and realization of her potential dawns in the presence of TA Mark, who not only shows her that her song works, but reveals that he's only 19. That young pup! I was disappointed at how thin and uninspiring her song was. I guess I'd prefer "She Could Be You." Lori adores Declan, but oh God, he's a backslide, and she tells him so. Even though he understands her and acts cool with her decision, did you see that heartbreaking expression of dejection on his face?

Josh - Andy hints at the big finish to prom, so of course Josh worries about his sexual performance since he never, you know, did "it." Stephen catches wind of Josh's intention, and gives an extremely awkward, yet somewhat adorable speech on "why to wait, but if you decide to make the most monumental mistake of your life, for God's sakes, wear a rubber." Josh finally backs down, and Andy says she wasn't planning on being a cliche anyway.

Ablanda
- She had "LAMB" stamped across her forehead the whole time -- as in "to the slaughter." I mean, really, she was someone we wouldn't miss, but Kyle sure would. After her prom angst about bad decorations, spiked punch and leaky roofs, did I really care if she was snatched? No. Also, as soon as she said those words, "I love you" to Kyle, I knew she was so asking for bad news. So yes, she was the one who went missing.

Highlights:

- Revelation that Lori wasn't always a cynic and loves the YA novel, "Priscilla's Perfect Prom." Yes, it's fake, but they better write it now.
- Lori referring to her sexuality as the "Tragerporium"
- Andy's horrid makeup job = "vampire/clown war"
- Awesome slip and fall by Josh.
- Jessi RE: being nice to Amanda: "I've had a near-death experience. It's going to take a few days for me to return to normal."
- Kyle doing a line dance. Pure joy.

Disappointments:

- Sarah is such a downer: "I wonder if it's worth having good memories ... you resent the good moments."
- Ablanda never broke out of her shell. I mean, she was having major prom dilemmas, and she was still just whiny. I wanted her to get angry. I wanted her to at least utter some sort of peep, show resistance when she was taken. Hell, I'd have settled for her leaving behind a shoe.
- "I love you." Really? No, I mean it. Really?!?
- Lori looked great. Ablanda wasn't bad. But Andy? I kind of wanted her either really hot or really subversive. Hair up in a sunny yellow dress? Not so much.
- Lori's song. I really expected a helluva lot more. If not singing, the lyrics.
- Very little quality Hillary.

Speculation:

- My high school locker room didn't have a huge vanity lit by makeup mirror lights.
- Lori: "That Nicole Trager: She's pretty good." Kyle: "Yes, she is." Eww?
- Hillary is just ripe for a slight reform. What if she goes for Declan next season?
Kyleprom - Um, so Kyle floats with Ablanda stepping on his feet, very reminiscent of Superman floating Lois. Does Amanda even notice? Did they discuss powers yet?
- A blue Ladnoc ring was left at the scene. How convenient. Is it actually Ladnoc? Did they grease their fingers? Is it a plant? Is it Brian Taylor? When will the first ransom message come?

Your thoughts on Jessi's future, Amanda's abductor, the Declan/Lori/Mark triangle, Kyle's options or the overall episode? How about your prom?

Boo to ABC Family for not running the 12am encore like they usually do. I missed it and I am very sad..

- Andy's horrid makeup job = "vampire/clown war"

Thanks. I thought she said vampire-clown *****.

Probably not on ABC Family.

Why is Ablanda the only one running prom? I know she had help at the end (even though they all bailed out), but doesn't the school have like an entire committee with adults on board?

The Jessi/Kyle interaction when they were saying goodbye to each other is the reason I watch this show. They really did a great job. It was one of the best moments on the show....

Right next to Declan being rejected by Lori! YES! Ya'll know how much I couldn't stand Declan. Lori did a great job there too.

I'm tired of all the Andy/Josh miscommunications. This is like the millionth time Josh has misunderstood her intentions. They should break up!

Hanh: I also found it strange when Kyle floated with Amanda. Like wah? Huh?

I started to retract and think that maybe Jessi would be abducted and that Sarah was with Ladnoc. But the moment Kyle left her outside by herself at night (wah??) was when I knew it would be Ablanda. And what was up with the weird TA/DJ Mark interaction with Kyle? Was that just me?

Hillary was barely featured and didn't win prom queen!!!!

Gus great catch about the TA's interaction with Kyle. It did seem like he was up to something. He was 15 year old senior which implies that he is incredibly smart.. Maybe he is a member of Ladnoc.

I guess Hanh, I think I was also a victim of expectation, because I was hope for more intrigue throughout the episode. I like the episode, I think that they did a great job showing how the event affected all the characters and I loved Steven pre-Prom parental freak out. And I really liked the new more mellow Jess and her interaction with everyone (to bad it to a near death experience to get her to be likeable) But after all the build up, the ending seemed very anticlimactic.

I can't wait for the new season. I want to see how Kyle explains Amanda's disappearance to her mother. He knows that Landoc took her so it seem unlikely that he would go to the police.

Was not a overly exciting episode, but was good. Plenty of laughs and prom cliches.

Andy's makeup was "vampire-clown *****".

I guess, Lori won't be bathing anymore, because she did it yesterday and it would a backslide. If you don't like Declan, fine; but that was a lame attempt to break up with someone.

I would have liked to see more reaction from Amanda, when Kyle started floating. The lights flickering is one thing, flying is something else; of course Amanda referenced Superman herself.

Interesting question about DJ-boy, I agree he is up to something. Hello he was still in the gym; when Kyle started floating around.

Does appear that Ladnoc has Amanda; honestly do you want to **** off Kyle? However it could be Brian; in a whole you took my girl, I'll take yours, kinda thing.

Whoa, Nicole and Kyle had the tension flying in the episode. Lori and her closed store; but still encouraging window shopping was hilarious.

The Jessi and Kyle stuff was very good. First time in a long time, I actually liked Jessi.

Poor kyle he now must face the monster known as Amanda's mother, and he has to wait till summer.

"A show of hands of people who remember their proms fondly? I went stag to mine, wore a short green ****tail dress, got a corsage from four friends and had a blast, unlike the people who scrambled to find dates they would rather forget. Not that I'm being snide or judgmental"

Lori Trager is that you?

@ jbw

Um, yeah, it must have been "vampire-clown *****," which makes more sense, but hey, I'm listening to it from my computer speakers and can't rewind to check.

Stephen gets all the father-son time with Josh, but definitely Nicole and Kyle's interactions don't feel familial.

Ha, ha, ha. Actually, it wasn't the cynical Lori side of me speaking. I had a blast at prom, but of the 5 other couples I was with, only one set actually enjoyed themselves. The rest told me they regretted going with the person they found at the last minute. It's all about the expectations! Hasn't Nicole Trager taught us anything?

The 12 AM replay is on tonight (Tuesday). Thats why I come to Zap2it, the schedule that other sites screw up.

Nope, it's not just you.

Next season we find out TA Mark's a bad guy and Lori gets her heart broken.

I wouldn't say I was disappointed in the finale, but I did think there'd be more intrigue, something a bit more cliffhangerish to keep us biting our nails till summer. But it was a nice episode.

This 2nd half of the 2nd season wasn't very action-packed, but might be because the PTB of Kyle XY weren't expecting to have to prepare the second 13 episodes. Anyway, I'm hoping Jessie is gone as a series regular. The constant back & forth-ing between her and Kyle as well as the focus on all her angst shifted the lens off Kyle and the conspiracy of Latnok, and I'd like the show to go back there. I'd also like to see Foss back, and hope he makes more of an appearance in S3!

I'm still waiting for an update on Jessi's former fake sister. What was her name again? I kinda enjoyed her character, and she seemed to be planning something earlier in the season...
