After many years of threatening to secure the Beatles catalogue, Tuesday (March 11) night's episode finally sees American Idol tapping into the Lennon-McCartney songbook. It's the start of the Top 12. There's a new credit sequence (lots of scary close-ups of pop singing avatars). There's a new stage (big and, um, big). But what about the singers and their interpretations of some of the finest compositions of the past 50 years?

Syeshamercado_americanidol7_top12paSinger: SYESHA MERCADO
Song: "Got To Get You Into My Life"
My Take: This theme night is really dangerous, because these are great songs, so great that even Simon probably knows them. Syesha's accompanied by a lot of brass from the newly elevated band and the arrangement is fairly jazzy (closer to the Earth Wind & Fire cover than the original). That means that much of the melody has been entirely changed. The problem for me? I, um, like the melody of this song. It's been made more rhythmically complicated than vocally, which is fortunate since Syesha starts off well out-of-tune. I guess she delivers on what's asked of her -- a little sass and generally sticking with the pace -- without standing out.
Ford, GM and Simon Say: Randy identifies the Earth, Wind & Fire arrangement and tells her that she was over-thinking and while he liked a lot of it, it was just aight. Paula says Syesha found the pitch in the middle and sounded great from there. Simon thought it was better than aight, but he warns her to get over her nervousness.

Singer: CHIKEZIE
Song: "She's a Woman"
My Take: Chikezie's just about the last contestant you'd expect to show up accompanied by a banjo player, wearing a sweater vest and going all honky-tonk and bluegrass-flavored. He starts off nasally, but when the song goes a little lower, he's fantastic and the more rock-infused the arrangement gets, the more Chikezie improves. I think this arrangement is probably very true to what Lennon and McCartney were doing at that stage in that career, borrowing and adapting American traditional music and seeing Chikezie bring it full-circle is great fun to watch. More than anything, Chikezie uses every inch of the expanded stage. Chikezie was in danger last week, but a performance this memorable ought to keep him secure for a week or two.
Ford, GM and Simon Say: Randy was thoroughly entertained. He thought the arrangement was dope, raving "Chikezie smashed it." Paula rather cogently says he started off in O Brother Where Art Thou territory. She's all praise for his risk-taking. Simon's surprised to agree with his comrades. Chikezie is bouncing around the stage like Cuba Gooding Jr. on Oscar night.

Ramielemalubay_americanidol7_top1_4Singer: RAMIELE MALUBAY
Song: "In My Life"
My Take: This is my Bubie Ida's favorite Beatles song, one that the family manages to sing at nearly every gathering in her presence. So basically, I hear "In My Life" and I think of birthday parties and my Cousin Ellen doing harmony and Ramiele doesn't do anything to change my perception. She sticks to the melody and can't seem to escape the over-singing rut she's been in for the past couple weeks. Thought she pushes some of the notes, she sounds pure and in-tune throughout, but this was the wrong performance to put after Chikezie.
Ford, GM and Simon Say: Randy calls it both pretty and pretty boring. Paula leads with praise for Ramiele's appearance, which is always a bad sign. She calls it pretty safe and tells Ramiele to stop holding back. I'm on the verge of praising how sober Paula seems tonight, she ends with, "The whole world needs to see what we hear in your voice." Simon says he was bored to tears and that he expects better from her.

Singer: JASON CASTRO
Song: "If I Fell"
My Take: Back on his guitar, seated on a stool, Jason looks mighty tiny in the middle of the huge new stage. The song is understated and sweet and Jason's well-equipped to deliver understated and sweet. He's pretty good at making the most of his limitations. He falters, though, when he tries to show that he has more range. He goes into a falsetto at near-random points in the song and every time he hits that falsetto, he closes his eyes, curls his lips and makes an "I'm singing mighty high!" face (not to be confused with his usual "I'm mighty high!" face). Jason is very much the college senior who takes his guitar to the freshman common rooms because he knows it makes the dewy-eyed coeds go weak at the knees. How far will those dewy-eyed coeds take Jason in this competition?
Ford, GM and Simon Say: It was one of Randy's favorite songs and so he wasn't sure Jason needed so many falsetto touches. Jason's exactly the sort of singer who makes Paula swoon. She says she feels his heart and that the audience feels his heart. Simon compares it to a "student in a bedroom at midnight." I think my analogy is better, but whatever. Simon isn't sure that Jason will have made the same impact this week as he made with "Halleluyah" last week.

Carlysmithson_americanidol7_top12_3Singer: CARLY SMITHSON
Song: "Come Together"
My Take: I liked the version of Carly we saw with Ryan tonight. She seemed loose and funny for the first time since this show started. Carly brings an entirely different tone to "Come Together" than what fans of the Beatles or even Aerosmith versions are accustomed to. I quite approve the difference right up until the end when Carly goes into her trademark yelling. Even if I wish that she'd delivered just a bit less intensity at the end (perhaps she should have traded some to Ramiele), I can't dispute that this is a much more confident Carly than we'd seen in past weeks, almost giving the sensation that she decided to go on auto-pilot until the Top 12. She's locked in and ready to go now, though. From my couch, it sounds like the most rapturous crowd response of the evening.
Ford, GM and Simon Say: Randy calls her strong, confident and stellar. Paula thinks she was already watching a star. For the first time, Simon thinks Carly chose a song that lived up to her ability. Then, in an effort to make this feel like a competition, Simon compares Carly to Kelly Clarkson.

Singer: DAVID COOK
Song: "Eleanor Rigby"
My Take: Oooh, did you hear the way David used "quasi" in his clip package? He really does love words. I'm not sure if David's version of "Eleanor Rigby" is more glam or grunge and what his jacket with the up-turned collar has to do with either. He's left his guitar behind this week, but he gets a huge assist from the band, which provides a wall of sound, as it were. David keeps throwing back his head and reveling in the flashing lights like he's having a tremendous time pretending to be a rock god. And it's a part he's now played well for two straight weeks, sounding great even on the big power notes. David's still a bit too smarmy for me to like him yet, but I'm growing to really respect him.
Ford, GM and Simon Say: Randy thinks David proved you can rock out on Idol. Paula wants to make it clear that there's more than one horse in this race and he's her favorite dark horse. Simon thought it was brilliant. "If the show remains a talent competition rather than a popularity competition, you actually could win this entire show," Simon announces. Tonight's theme? David Archuleta doesn't have this sucker in the bag.

Brookewhite_americanidol7_top12partSinger: BROOKE WHITE
Song: "Let It Be"
My Take: Wait. I finally figured it out. Brooke White is January Jones' character on Mad Men, or maybe she's the January Jones character after she stumbles upon a folk record next season? The instrumentally versatile Brooke tickles the ivories this week, albeit carrying only a stripped-down portion of the piece. She conveys earnestness marvelously and audiences seem to be responding well to that so far. This is a right-down-the-middle cover of the song, but she's very solid. Is there anything distinctive about her voice? I haven't heard it yet, but as the Conrad Birdie hit says, you've gotta be sincere and Brooke is uber-sincere.
Ford, GM and Simon Say: Randy admires how heartfelt and simple her performance was. Brooke's in tears immediately, tears that wouldn't play for anybody else on this show. Paula says Brooke finds an emotional connection that makes people fall in love with her. Simon loved the song choice and says Brooke's believable. Ryan also reveals that Brooke has been playing with bare feet, which has played well for female Idol contestants in the past. Nobody, however, needs to see David Cook's feet, which I'd imagine are hairy like a hobbit.

Singer: DAVID HERNANDEZ
Song: "I Saw Her Standing There"
My Take: A pizza bistro! David Hernandez worked at a pizza bistro! Darnit! Anybody who says otherwise is just wrong, wrong, wrong. David becomes the first contestant to leave the new Idol stage and rush into the audience. No, you immature fools, he doesn't give anybody in the crowd a lapdance. Grow up. Pizza bistro! David's voice may be too velvety for the Chuck Berry-tinged arrangement. The mixture of the smoothness of his voice and his cheesy eager-to-please enthusiasm makes David come across as a bit of a theme park performer.
Ford, GM and Simon Say: Randy thinks David can really sing, but that in this case he over-sang and lost him. Paula also thinks David overdid it, too many runs. Simon says "no" three times and calls it "corny verging on desperate." Worst of all, he says it wasn't "cool" and mutters something about a "rabbit in the headlights." Ryan addresses David's "stressful week" in the vaguest way he can.

Amandaovermyer_americanidol7_top1_2Singer: AMANDA OVERMYER
Song: "You Can't Do That"
My Take: I'm not a fan of the striped pants Amanda was wearing at her Idol photo shoot and that she's wearing tonight, but the feathered version of the streaked hair is pretty good. Amanda then delivers exactly the sort of performance that the people who hate her will hate, but reminds me why I want to see a couple more months of her. I just asked if Brooke's voice is at all distinctive. I don't need to ask about Amanda. You wanna know how Janis Joplin would have covered "You Can't Do That"? Well, now you know. I never said Amanda has a unique voice, but I dig it. You can smell the whiskey and cigarettes on her breath through the screen. That's a compliment.
Ford, GM and Simon Say: Randy says she took a Beatles song to a Southern bar and rocked it out. Paula is blown away by tonight's talent. Simon preferred last week and calls her on some of her slurring. Paula interrupts Simon. Simon tells her to shut up. Paula tells Simon to be respectful of her. Simon tells Paula to be respectful of him. It's a whole thing.

Singer: MICHAEL JOHNS
Song: "Across the Universe"
My Take: John Lennon and I agree on "Across the Universe." It's one of my favorites. Before saying any more, can the producers make the kids in the mosh pit stop waving their arms on every ballad? It's obnoxious. Michael's got a smidge too much closed-eyes passion emotion for me to watch, but when I close my eyes, he sounds great. Michael isn't breaking a sweat here and yet his voice is 10 times bigger than anything somebody like Jason Castro could ever hope for.
Ford, GM and Simon Say: Randy wanted something bigger to happen, saying it's a bit sleepy. Paula, usually in low-step with Randy, disagrees again and says it's brilliant. Simon can't remember Carly's name, but he knows Michael should have been more like her.

Kristyleecook_americanidol7_top12_2Singer: KRISTY LEE COOK
Song: "Eight Days a Week"
My Take: I can't explain why, but I start giggling almost as soon as Kristy breaks into her country-inflected version of "Eight Days a Week." This is the most energy she's showed in weeks (she's been ill), but the arrangement is desperate and frenzied. In fact, I'm going to put almost all of the blame on the arrangement, because Kristy's voice is properly countrified and she looks darned purdy.
Ford, GM and Simon Say: Randy goes a different way. He liked the arrangement, but wanted fewer runs. Paula didn't enjoy it. Simon compares her to "Dolly Parton on helium" and says it was horrendous. Meanwhile, Simon and Ryan get into their third or fourth shouting match about nothing.

Singer: PRESUMPTIVE AMERICAN IDOL WINNER DAVID ARCHULETA
Song: "We Can Work It Out"
My Take: Sure, the judges have gone out of their way to present plausible alternatives to the juggernaut that is Presumptive American Idol Winner David Archuleta, but on the first night on the big stage, who got the pimp slot? Oh yeah. You know it. David appears to lose the lyrics early into what is apparently the Stevie Wonder version of the song. Then he falls into mumbling several times later in the song. Is he being forgetful or just dropping words? The former, it seems, because he's distracted and out-of-synch for the entire first half of the song and even if he recovers the melody, he looks in a daze. I've been talking to friends for the past week about what David would have to do to open up the competition. And this is the answer. One bad performance alone wouldn't have done it, but a bad performance on a night that three or four other singers stood out? That makes things interesting.
Ford, GM and Simon Say: Randy wasn't happy with the vibe, saying it was forced and didn't quite work. Paula calls David on botching the lyrics. Simon promises to treat everybody fairly and judges it a mess.

TONIGHT'S BEST: This was a very good night for the Idol Top 12. We got great performances from Chikezie and David, plus very very good performances from Carly, Michael and Amanda. I'm going to say Chikezie was my favorite, but there are plenty of other acceptable answers.

IN DANGER: If the last female position in the Top 12 really came down Asia'H and Kristy, this week's silly performance may well be enough knock Kristy out. Ramiele and David Hernandez are likely to join her in the Bottom Three, though I wouldn't be surprised to see Syesha sneak in also.

Agree? Disagree? Sound off on the performances from the Top 12...

You know, it's only when you hear all the different variety of songs that were sung tonight that you realize how amazing the Beatles were. Most of the Idols did them justice tonight as well. My favorites were Karly and Dave Cook, with Chikezie, Brook and Amanda not too far behind. Kristy's effort was a major blunder. If she was going to change a Beatles song to country, she should have picked a slower song. Her voice couldn't keep up with the nusic tonight, so as Simon said, she ended up sounding like Dolly Parton on helium. Dave A's effort was pretty awful as well. How can a supposed seasoned performer like him forget the words. He's lucky it's the final 12, and not later in the competition, or he would have been on his bike. I think Kirsty will be going home though, with David Hernandez and Syesha (due mainly to going first) also in the bottom three.

I love Brooke and she's one of my favorites for the prize but I gotta say David Cook was unreal tonight...I would (and may) buy that single.

Archuletta was horrible and he's lucky he's got a lot of built of cred.

Chikeze's performance was great to watch.

I don't think KLC will go....too many country fans. The Dolly Parton comment alone probably got her more. What's with Paula mimicing Randy's EXACT thoughts??? Except of course when she defiantly "disagrees" with him. I liked that she tore KLC a new one though:)

Archuleta totally sucked...Ramiele was boring, but has an awesome voice...Hernandez chose an awful song for his histrionics...and Kristy's song's arrangement was horrendous. Bottom 3 should be Archuleta, Hernandez and Cook. Chikese rocked!!!

You thought Chikezie was the best tonight? I thought he was the worst. I hated the way he sang the song in at least 3 different styles, and quite nasally. I think he is in danger of elimination, along with Syesha, Kristy, David H, and maybe even Amanda, although I think she was one of the best tonight.

Holt shnikes how the mighty have fallen.

David Archuletta's performance may have been one of the worst performances ever on Idol. Bad enough for the best of the worst show.

He forgot the words not once, not twice but three times and came offmore like Donny Osmond then Stevie wonder.

Abd this was after basically saying he had never heard and didn't like the Beatles. If there is any justice in this competition David would not only be in the bottom three but should be going home. I sincerely believe it was five times worse then any performance Sanjaya gave last year

And I couldn't believe they game him the final pimp slot for the second time. Talk about favortism.Brooke or Jason C. have not had the final slot once yet and Archuletta gets it the second time.

Brooke was probably the best performance and her Let It Be should have had the final spot. Second best performance was probably Chickezie. He really srepped up his game.

as Simon would say I can't believe it but Paula was making more sense tonight then Simon was. Did I hear Simon call two LEnnon Mccartney songs boring? Or maybe he just meant the performances of them were boring.

Jason was pretty good too. I think PAula was right and Simon was wrong. The thing with Jason is he is a little green. He hasn't performed that many times. But his choices are good. He doesn't hit every notes but he has a good recording voice and his performance skills will only get better.

It's funny I was thinking the same thing about waving hands in the crowd. I was embarr***ed for the crowd when they were doing that. SOOOOOOOOOO Lame.

David Cooke is definitely making a bid for front runner now the the Emperor David A. has been caught with no clothes

Hell based on last night performnances the finals could shape up to be David Cooke and Brooke.

With Carly, Jason Castro, and Chickezie being dark horses.

I can't believe I actually agreed with Paula about Michael's performance... I thought it was appropriately understated and terrific. Randy & Simon wanted big, but we've already seen him belt songs like "Light My Fire." He handled "Across The Universe" beautifully. Plus he looked hot :)

I thought it was about what we should have expected in the first week of the top 12 - i.e. about 1/2 good and 1/2 bad performances. What was unexpected was some of the people were in the opposite category of what we would have expected.

I am really sick of Randy Jackson's patronizing comments when singers who aren't those that he's praised every week do well. Eg. His "Who knew you had that" comment he threw Chikezie's way tonight. He's done it in the past as well and it always annoys me. You would never hear him say something like that about David A.

David A., KLC and Jason Castro should be the bottom 3 - but I think KLC, David H. and either Castro or Ramiele will be. I think Syesha will be safe from the bottom 3 this week b/c while she wasn't very good she didn't get a boring comment tonight.

Lastly, when Ryan was holding Brooke's hand and she was still holding him at arm's length you would've figured he would've let go of her hand but no he stayed in stalker mode the entire post song interview.

Well, even though a few of the guys did absolutely HORRIBLE (i.e. Jason Castro, David Hernandez, and (surprisingly) David Archuleta), I'm sure they can all take comfort in knowing that it's definitely a female that will be leaving the show tonight.

What a choice between very poor performances from Syesha, Ramiele, Brooke, Kristy Lee, Amanda.

Yes, Ramiele was as boring as boring could be. Amanda mumbled and screamed her way through, not allowing me to understand one word she sang. Syesha was just lifeless. Kristy Lee was just overall terrible (a shame for the young hottie), and Brooke added nothing whatsoever to "Let it Be", singing it exactly as it was originally sung. BORING there too.

I am actually glad that David A had a bad week. He's extremely overrated. Let this be a true competition and people - stop voting for him because you think he's cute!!!! Of course Dialidol.com shows him as the only "safe" performer which means this really is a popularity competition. There are some great singers here and let's have one of THEM win. Go Carly!
