'Gossip Girl': The morning after
So no beating around the bush, so to speak, on Gossip Girl. Chuck did indeed divest Blair of her chastity belt in the back of his limo. The question is: What will be the fallout?
Spoilers looking all kawaii in a sailor suit.
Despite a hilarious confession to a Catholic priest, Blair (who's not of that faith) doesn't seem too broken up about losing her virginity. Sure, she wants Nate back and warns Chuck that last night never happened, but dare I say it? She looks happy, alive ... less uptight. Draw your own conclusions.
Strangely enough, it's Chuck who's not faring well. He admits that he *gasp* likes her and is jealous of her thing with Nate. He has butterflies. He hates it. It's so ridiculously delicious. What lengths will he go to in order to have Blair all to himself? Would he betray his best friend ... again?
Said friend is encouraged/guilted to reconcile with Blair to cement the Waldorf (i.e. Eleanor's account) good graces. Despite a promising phone call, he's still balking at giving her the family engagement ring and even avoids her birthday party, opting to take a walk with Jenny. Yeah, I know -- random and completely ill-advised. Chuck takes Nate's absence to make a wager with Blair, with another torrid night together on the line.
Meanwhile, little Jenny has brought home her totally hot, young mom Allison for some nice Humphrey awkwardness around the breakfast table. I'm not caring for this plot at all, especially since it looks like Rufus is going to give her a chance. This isn't going to work. Dan is definitely dubious, but he has his own problems. He has his own awkward situation balancing his platonic (no, really) friendship with Vanessa and his burgeoning romance with Serena.
His solution? Get the girls together at Blair's 17th birthday party so they can become BFFs, and all will be right in the world. Uh, Dan, hate to break this to you, but the transitive property does not apply to friends. Nothing huge happens, but Dan is once again reminded that he has very little experience with women and vows to give Serena the proper attention. Oh, and they actually do get along ... for now.
Incidentally, I loved the idea of a Japanese-themed party. The anime, the sailor suit costumes, the juicy sushi, mmmm. Guitar Hero was a bit of hit-over-the-head product placement, but I love the game so much, I forgive the show.
As midnight rolls around and Nate doesn't show or call to wish Blair a happy birthday, she gets a special present from Gossip Girl herself: a cell phone photo of Nate hugging Jenny (whose face is obscured). So yeah, Blair cheated, but she does really tug at the heartstrings when her face falls and she admits that she and Nate are over. Chuck is of course there to comfort her, and she's more than willing to have her bruised ego stroked. Unfortunately, Serena spies them going at it.
Lovely highlights:
- Blair asking for punishment for trysting with Chuck: "[How about] putting that thing with the teeth around my thigh like Silas?"
- Blair: "You don't grant birthday wishes, do you?" Priest: "I'm a priest, not a genie."
- Gossip Girl: "Speak of the devil, and he doth appear wering his trademark scarf. Careful B, hell hath no fury like a Chuck Bass scorned."
- Chuck: "What's on your mind?"
Nate: "My mom."
Chuck: "Sounds Freudian."
- Blair pulling Chuck's hair and telling him to murder the butterflies in his stomach.
- Kati about the mystery girl in photo with Nate: "I hope the slut totally gave him Herpes."
- Blair eyeing the gift box Chuck gives her: "Is that our sex tape?"
Whew? What are your thoughts? Will Blair regret her actions with Chuck again? What do you think about Nate and Jenny?
Enjoyed the Episode
Gossip Girl: Chuck is the gift that keeps on giving!
Tyson | Nov 14, 2007 10:14:31 PM | #I'd been avoiding this episode but I caved in and watched it tonight. It's actually entertaining (unlike, say, One Tree Hill). It's funny, in a good way, hearing Veronica Mars narrating.
edgar | Nov 14, 2007 11:02:11 PM | #Loved the epidose and the chemistry between Chuck and blair is explosive. I want nate to find out. I hope Jenny and Nate dont get together as in the books.
XOXO
Thanks for spoiling that for us Mariela...not all of us have the read the books...
C | Nov 15, 2007 6:00:15 AM | #This was a great episode for sweeps month. I feel more chemistry between Blair and Chuck than between Serena and Dan. In fact, I loved all the scenes with Blair, especially the "confession" to the priest.
I really did not expect Rufus and Allison to get back together so soon. I bet that Lily will be jealous as soon as she learns that Allison came home. As for the other parents, I still can't stand Nate's parents and Blair's mother.
I have not read the books either, but it seems like the writers want Nate and Jenny to hook up eventually...that is, after Nate stops being so emo. ;-)
Paige | Nov 15, 2007 7:30:51 AM | #Hmm, so I know everyone's all about either Nate or Dan and everything.. but Chuck has seriously grown on me! I absolutely loved him in this episode :)
I'm very over Vanessa though. She STILL irritates me. I say this every week but.. she actually annoys me.
If they had portrayed Vanessa like they did in the books.. well that would have been something. But tv Vanessa is soooo needy and I don't feel sorry for her at all, although I'm probably supposed to.
Please! Tell the girl to move on!
Nicki | Nov 15, 2007 8:24:56 AM | #I LOVED this episode. Blair is BY FAR my favorite character on the show! I loved her response when Dan showed up to the party with that annoying Vanessa. Priceless!
I didn't want Rufus to give in to Allison so easily. She ditched her family! I'd rather see him with Serena's mom, but then that would make Serena and Dan's relationship kind of weird.
I like Chuck & Blair together & can't wait to see what Blair does when she learns that Jenny is the one with Nate.
This show gets better and better! I love all the plot twists and turns. I agree Vanessa is so needy, Her character just doesn't fit the show. I think that she needs to go. I really like Blair and Chuck together, tne have that steamy lust think going on. Selena and Dan are cute, but the don't go well together. I also don't like Nate and Jenny together. She seems to immature for that relationship. And I don't like Nate and Blair together as well, kinda dull if you ask me. This show is excellent, I can't wait for the next episode. It keeps you wanting more! The writers really get you hooked. And what are the books the series is based on? I would really like to read them. Could someone please tell me what they are so I can go out and buy them? All I got to say is: Hurry up wednesday, I need my Gossip Girl Fix!

The books are actually based on the Gossip Girl series, lol
they're written by Cecily Von Ziegesar.
C - I don't know if this will make you feel better, but I've read that the series is not following the plot lines of the books. So if Nate and Jenny do get together, I don't think it will necessarily be because they did in the books. And, it certainly seems like they are going there based on last night's ep.
| Nov 15, 2007 1:08:25 PM | #I've never read the books either. I'm sure I'll get around to them eventually.
I called the Blair/Chuck hookup a while ago. I even called that it would be an opportunity for Chuck to be "nicer." I look forward to seeing where this new twist in the storyline leads.
Why should Blair be upset about no longer being a virgin? I know CW shows like to belabor the storylines of female characters losing their virginity, but I think it's refreshing that Blair isn't (so far!) being made to act like it was a major decision or that she has to "pay" for having had sex.
She wanted to have sex with Nate her first time, but he's not the right choice. I'm not entirely certain that Chuck *is* the right choice, exactly, but at least she picked an experienced mentor. And it sounds like she had a good time, which is as it should be the first time anyone has sex. Go Blair.
Blair had some great lines and stuff to do in this ep, but, in my opinion, her delivery wasn't always solid. I think Leighton Meester is a good actress, but sometimes she slips and seems more like a sweet actress saying lines and doing business than she does a snotty Upper East Side teen with an attitude to match her bank account.
I'm not that into the fate of Dan and Jenny's parents. Seems to me that Ma has an awful lot of 'splain' to do. So far there's been none that's been satisfactory enough, in my eyes, for Pa to take Ma back, but, then, I'm not a fictional character on a CW teen drama series. What do I know?
Vanessa needs to get a life away from Dan. She really, really does. Preferably an interesting one. But, since her sole reason for being right now seems to be to threaten Dan's love of Serena, I guess she's perfect.
Uh-huh.
Berlin | Nov 17, 2007 10:26:48 AM | #okay so i have read the books and noirmally i am a diehard fan of blair and nate. before watching the show they were the only couple in the book series that i actually cared about. However, in the book series, nate really does love blair, he's just a complete d*ckhead/idiot. They are soulmates ... in the book. In the tv series he only likes her at best. The two have don't have real chemistry onscreen so far. Nate and Jenny ,however, do. I find myself hoping that the'll hook up! i think they'd be really god together. Although, she is a little young for him (he's 17 and a she's 14).
kate | Nov 24, 2007 11:40:52 AM | #I think chuck and blair have some hot chemistry.
god damn blairs a lucky,
i would do anything to get in chucks pants.
PLEASE DONT READ THIS IF YOU DNT WANT TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS
I love the new series of Gossip girl and cnt wait until next series but i have read the books and hope the second series dont end up like that because, the book has a big twist and it is rubbish it makes you think why bother reading it if it ends up like that. because dan becomes gay and nate ends up fleeing the country claiming to love both serena and blaire which is rediculous
i think persnally the couples should be
jenny and nate (they would be great together)
and the rest shood go there separate ways,,
