"Ghost Whisperer" They mostly come at night...mostly

Jenniferlovehewitt_ghostwhisperer_2 Tonight's episode of Ghost Whisperer started with Melinda and Jim camping, and Melinda looking far too beautiful to be a girl who put on her make up with a compact balanced on her knees while smoke from a campfire blew in her eyes. Some girls get all the eye lashes! And all the thieves rummaging through their camp gear. A moment later, the rummaging ragamuffin catches sight of them and takes off, leaving them to make chase. When she finally falls and they catch her, I am nearly taken aback by how much she reminds me of Newt, from Aliens - one of my favorite movies of all time. And just like Newt, the dirty little blonde girl refuses to talk at first. But there's nothing like a mention of Children's Services to loosen a tongue. She tells them her name is Becka (note: Newt's real name was Rebecca!), that her parents died in a car accident, and that she ran away from foster care about 3 weeks ago. She begs them not to make her go back and they decide to put off the inevitable by going to sleep. Which is when we find out Becka is being haunted by a young boy as she wakes up screaming with him telling no one in particular "She's mine".

The next morning, Jim wakes Melinda to inform her that Becka is gone. When they find out she not only took all their food, but also their car keys, they are off and running again. Luckily, the truck is stuck in the mud. Unluckily, Becka is gunning the engine and the dead boy is with her. When Melinda yells at him to go away, Becka looks over in amazement and can only say "You saw him too"! They take Becka back to their house, where Melinda asks about her ability. When she asks what she said to her parents after they died and she has no answer, it's pretty clear she was lying about them being dead. In truth, they think she's sick and take her to see doctors and force her to take medications in attempt to control her visions. They call her parents and let them know they have their daughter. They jump on a plane, of course, and Melinda realizes she has about 24 hours to teach Becka all she knows about ghosts and helping them cross over.

She takes Becka to the antique store and tells her to look at the vintage clothes while she talks to Delia - who seems less disbelieving then usual, but still wonders if teaching is wise. Meanwhile, by the dresses, Becka is surrounded by the whispers of the dead and shrieks when she finds the dead boy behind the rack. She runs out of the store and Melinda chases her again. When she catches her, she tries to convince the scared girl that she must face the boy's ghost and figure out what he needs. Becka admits that she knows his name is Daniel and that he died in an accident. They meet up with Prof. Rick, who is excited to meet Melinda's young protege, but Melinda redirects his energy towards trying to find out if Daniel was a passenger on the plane that crashed (the same one the killed Andrea, I suppose).  Unfortunately, she doesn't redirect his focus before he can let slip about the voices Becka heard in the basement and their connection to the untold numbers of trapped souls in the tunnel, which can conveniently be accessed by a hole in the wall. I have a bad feeling that will come back to bite someone this episode.

Speaking of bad feelings, Melinda takes Becka back to the woods to make contact with Daniel, who promptly appears and is less than pleased with Becka for leaving him. Which is fair, because she is equally displeased with him for not leaving her. All thoughts of helping him cross over are abandoned as she screams at him to leave her alone, adding that she doesn't care why he's caught here. He retaliates by sending her a vision of her arms on fire. She screams, he disappears and Melinda tries to figure out what the heck just happened. Back in the safety of her home, Becka explains that she doesn't care why Daniel is stuck, since all he wants to do is scare her. Melinda comforts her about the unfairness of her ability, but implores her to help, not only because he will keep haunting her if she doesn't, but because she can. Becka finally agrees and begins telling Melinda everything about the vision Daniel sent her.

While Becka rests, Melinda does some digging and finds out that Daniel died as result of a car collision. He died on the scene and his parents died at the hospital. Which explains his paranoia about being left behind. Melinda heads home to tell Becka, but when she arrives Becka's parents are already there. Becka runs out and exclaims that she told her parents the truth - that she was just like Melinda and only pretending to see ghosts to get attention. Melinda nervously agrees while Becka's parents pile praise on her for getting through to their daughter. Melinda goes inside to help Becka pack and Becka thanks her for not busting her. When Melinda tells her she can't ignore the ghosts, Becka denies it, saying now that she knows it isn't her fault, she thinks she can. Besides she isn't brave enough to actually deal with them.

Of course, that works as well as we all thought it would. But Becka is more brave then even she suspected, because when Daniel appears to her again that night in her parent's hotel room and tells her that "the man" knows about her and where "they" are keeping his parents, she agrees to help him. Back at Melinda's house, Becka's parents show up, looking for their daughter. Melinda all but explodes at them, yelling at them for not believing the daughter and admitting that she sees ghosts too before running from the house. Jim tries to clean up the mess, telling the stunned couple that he understands his wife may seem crazy, but that she's their only hope for getting their daughter back. When the alarm company that monitors the store calls Melinda to ask if she wants them to call the police, she tells them no, and goes to the store herself. She gives Prof. Rick a call, who remembers letting slip about the tunnel entrance in the basement and tells her that Daniel was drunk when he died.

At the store, the children are already in the tunnel and Melinda goes in after them. As the voices nearly overcome her, she has a flashback to her grandmother telling her to listen to her heart and the soul she needs to hear most will find her. A moment later, she hears Daniel's parents and from there finds Becka and Daniel, surrounded by lost souls. She tells Daniel he can go with his parents, who said they came to the tunnel because a man told them if they crossed over they would never see their son again, but who both see the light now that they've been reunited with him. Sadly, their son doesn't see the light and doesn't want to leave Becka. Melinda explains to him that his parents didn't leave him, they died somewhere else and they explain that their death wasn't his fault. But it isn't until Becka tells him that him going will show her how to be brave that he does cross over with his parents.

Back at Melinda's house, Becka's parents admit they want to believe her but that it's just too much. But when Becka interrupts to tell them that a man has wanted her to tell them something for a long time and goes on to recount that he died of an aneurysm, and that he had wanted her parents to meet for a long time but they both kept saying no while he kept imploring them to "have a little faith". This, of course, is a friend of her parent's who died before Becka was born and thus, they are convinced of her ability. Before they leave, Melinda asks Becka why she ran away to Grandview and she can only answer that it felt right. When Gabriel shows up later that night, we are left to wonder what his involvement in it all is.  After all, there was plenty of hints about "the man" telling souls what to do - mostly involving them staying put. But all he will reveal is that he thinks his sister is missing the big picture, because she doesn't have all the answers.

What do you think those answers might be?  Is Gabriel not as dark as we thought, or is he even worse than we've ever suspected? Don't bad guys always have facial hair? Speaking of hair, how does Jennifer Love Hewitt get hers so shiny?

I liked the episode. I loved the part when Jim tried to explain to Becka's parents why Melinda was upset, because I love to see how supportive and understanding he is. As much as I like to see Payne and Delia, I didn't really see a purpose for them to be on last night's show. Melinda and Gabriel's conversation; I hope that doesn't mean that she will become evil.

I enjoyed last nights episode. It was interesting to see how compassionate Melinda was toward Becka. I heard Jennifer on a talk show recently where she said she is claustrophobic,so last nights episode made me appreciate her acting ability. I am happy that Jim has had more screen time. He is important this show. I would still like to see more Jim and less Payne. The young girl who played Becka was very convincing.

I enjoyed last nights episode quite a bit. The mythology is defiantly getting darker as the episodes progress or should I say themed episodes. I still think GW needs to work on keeping the mytho flowing threw out bits and pieces of all the eps rather then just a few. To name a few "Don't Try This at Home," "No Safe Place" and "Double Exposure" it is just not enough to keep new fans that are interested in the mytho to keep returning till they are fully addicted or loyal enough to just return for the heck of it.

One they I felt cheated from this ep is the lack of Grams, Little Mel and Gabriel it said guest starring but from what they showed felt like stints. The scene where Mel confronts Becca in the bathroom about embracing her gift defiantly could have used a flashback imo. Otherwise a nice suspenseful builder for the last episode to air till December 14.

ok, i'm confused. is mel's brother dead, is he a ghost? i only watch this show occasionally and i don't understand why gabriel is there? is he trying to convince melinda to cross over to the dark side? i remember that the father is dead and using the brother ... but why? and i thought delia belived in melinda's powers? what happened there? anyway i agree, more husband, less jay mohr.

It's a hard thing to except, she never said she'd fully excepted it but that she'd try to understand it from her perspective.

Gab, isn't dead. He's alive and kicking. Get Season 2 on DVD and watch the last 3 eps and you'd be caught up.
