'Private Practice': I pity the people in Connecticut
Ah, the dream sequence. It's the television writer's greatest tool. It can pave the way for a myriad of possibilities, from the ridiculous to the sublime. Or it can be interrupted, repeatedly by the dreamer falling out of bed. What is Addison sleeping in? A twin?
Spoilers lay ahead like a bad dream.
Addison doesn't masturbate. And there, readers, is the big character development moment this week for our heroine. In her dreams, of course involving an elevator, Pete compliments her, or rather, her big brain, and then she falls out of bed before anything happens in dream-land. This is why she's wound too tightly? Will the magic of the showerhead relax Addison? I never thought I'd have to ask these questions of a TV character, but there you go. Pete, Mr. Holistic, is going to have to figure out a way to connect Addison's big brain back to her body before she's in any way ready for a real relationship. Good luck with that, Pete. I'm pulling for you.
I'm glad Maya, Naomi and Sam's daughter, is back. And what a nice way to balance Addison's lack of getting any! Bring in the sexually active 13-year-old and her sexually active friend! I've been hoping for a good storyline for Naomi, but this is like the ultimate passive storyline – there doesn't seem to be anything going on with her, other than her bubbling resentment for Sam, and she also doesn't know that her daughter has been sexually active for a year with several partners. What is she doing with all of her time? And where was Sam for any of this? Addison absolutely should have told both Sam and Naomi that Maya came to her, that she was examined, had blood tests run, and on and on, and Naomi was right to be mad at her for how the situation with her minor child was handled. Maybe it will be a good twist to their relationship for the future. And I didn't believe Maya in the end. She's no little girl. Hopefully we'll see more of her. (A golf clap: The actress that plays Maya [Shavon Kirkey] is a dead ringer for Audra McDonald. Nice job casting!)
Poor Violet. I really feel sorry for her, and not because of that President Clinton fantasy. But I digress. I've realized that Alan is the classic evil ex-boyfriend/user. She's not just broken, she's shattered. In the spotlight of Alan's attention, she's even less capable of functioning, much less being a therapist. Cooper told Violet to "get help", which was appropriate, but two minutes later he mentions Maya's drool, and wherever it may have been now. I shudder. If Violet is going to need a savior, and if it's predetermined to be Cooper, give him some dignity now. That's what both of them are lacking in order to give them any weight as likeable characters, and believable doctors. In order to be flag-wavers for their future relationship, you have to give them a modicum of strength, an ounce of self-respect. And that is applicable for any of the characters - Addison and Pete, Naomi and Sam (I'm still betting they have a future re-fling), Naomi and Dell, whoever.
And I've realized that in order to like this show, I'm going to have to suspend disbelief in a big way – none of them are going to act in a grown-up manner, either professionally or personally. They're going to act like kids, being fools as they bump around "finding themselves" and enabling each other to continue the juvenile behavior.
The Shonda Rhimes rollercoaster of good and bad continues. We were doing so well.
Other thoughts:
- I've just finished watching the show, and I have no feeling or memory retention at all for Sam and Violet's patient, the wife and mother who had been attacked. I don't think I could care less about that storyline.
- Oh wait, I forgot about Dell and His Circus of Speculum Mishaps.
- I've met President Clinton, and all politics aside, his cologne is perfect. He smells really good.
What do you think? Did you like it? Did you care? Do you feel Addison and Pete's chemistry? Have you ever met a President?
I watch a couple minutes of the show and kinda got bored I really think they should end the Pete/Addison relationship he's really goofy and if you have ever seen that sitcom he was on Wings by the way, he was goofy on that too they should bring her a young man someone in his mid 20s or early 30s.
Dillon M Casey | Oct 25, 2007 4:45:18 AM | #But I thought Maya said that she wasn't like her friend, that she was still a kid?
EM | Oct 25, 2007 6:02:08 AM | #Fantastic episode. Best so far. Everything worked perfectly.
This show is hitting its stride.
It was Maya's friend that was sexually active. She was the one that had the ectopic pregnancy and gonorrhea, not Maya. She was just covering for her b/c they were scared and didn't know who to turn to or what to do. The reviewer's wrong. Maya's still a virgin according to the show.
YIP | Oct 25, 2007 8:09:03 AM | #Well according to what Maya is telling us. But, I do love this show now. Took a while, Bu Im on board.
Ray | Oct 25, 2007 8:17:02 AM | #The thing that bothered me most is that Addison was in a dilemma re: Maya because of patient confidentiality (which I think is a non-issue since she is a minor) but then had no problem divulging Maya's friend's status to Naomi and Maya, BEFORE even talking to the the girl's parents.
Carrie | Oct 25, 2007 9:11:39 AM | #What I said was I think Maya is lying.
And Carrie is spot on. It's all over the place.
Kiley | Oct 25, 2007 9:24:19 AM | #I did not enjoy this episode, to me it was cheesy. But I want to point out that Cooper told Addison that California has strict laws, stating explicitly doctors cannot violate the confidentiality of a patient, even if the patient is a minor. Addison did the legal thing in not telling Naomi.
Jenn | Oct 25, 2007 9:48:13 AM | #And It was Naomi's Daughter who called her and told her what was going on. So, Addison didnt really tell her anything her daughter might not have already told her.
Ray | Oct 25, 2007 10:15:17 AM | #I was under the impression that at the end Maya rescending her statments about being sexually active, that it was just her friend all along. She did tell Naomi she wasn't doing what her friend was doing that she was "still a kid" or something along those lines.
ave | Oct 25, 2007 10:38:48 AM | #Hello, Doctor-patient confidentiality. Someone stated it above - it doesn't matter if the patient is a minor and her mother is your best friend, you are bound by the law NOT to discuss her case with her mother. Now you can go around hinting and say "If I were you I'd really ask your daughter if she's having sex or not" but even that is getting too close to breaking that confidentiality code.
Totally realistic for Addison Not to tell Naomi.
As a pediatrician, I can tell you that Addison's covenant at that point was w/her patient. Eventhough she's a minor, she does not need parental consent to be treated for an STD. If we told the parents, it would discourage kids from ever coming in to be treated. We all know kids shouldn't have sex, but unfortunately they do. That is why the doctor-patient covenant applies to this situation in most states.
On the upside, I'm pleased to see that they've started to flesh out Charlotte King's character. Turns out that Charlotte is more than just the rule-toting b*tch from the nearby hospital. She drops to watch that sprinter? miler? run on a treadmill just so Charlotte can say that she saw the runner run before that runner's image was pasted on a Wheaties box.
Actually, I'd love to see Naomi and Charlotte get closer. It would reveal more interesting things about both of their characters.
At the end, Addison gets a showerhead that looks like a cousin to the East European one Kramer got on "Seinfeld." Does that mean she isn't going to give Pete a shot?
anlette | Oct 25, 2007 12:52:30 PM | #In regards to the patient who was attacked, I believe that they are saying she was a patient of the clinic's but not that she had been on the show (until this ep) - i.e. you memory isn't failing you. I'm also going on the assumption that all the patients are just 'walk-ins' and that many (if not all) have been patients there for a long time.
Rishi | Oct 25, 2007 3:06:51 PM | #I was so with that patient who wouldn't let Dell touch her because he was way too hot. He wouldn't be coming near me either unless I got better benefits!!
And is it me but I've never had a shower head that active - is there a special brand out there?!
Sirius | Oct 25, 2007 7:14:28 PM | #What I'm wondering is if Addison is such a great doctor wouldn't she be able to tell the difference between some who is a virgin and someone who has been sexually active? If Maya hasn't been having sex Addison should've known that from the exam.
Riley | Oct 28, 2007 3:06:32 PM | #I know I'm extremely late in watching this, but I just hafta say...I HATE the men in this show. Well, not all of them. But namely Pete & Sam are both jerks. How Pete smirks and makes fun of Addison, enjoying making her uncomfortable while taking pleasure out of her feelings for him. Sucks.
