I always feel like somebody's watching... the 'Ghost Whisperer'

Jenniferlovehewitt_ghostwhisperer_2 I've often laughed at Melinda the stalker on this show. She's always tracking people, looking up relatives, jumping in on conversations. And the people aren't that phased when she drops the fact that she sees ghosts. Man, I'd like to visit Grandview.

Funny enough, though, real stalking is what this week's episode is about. And even though this show is about ghosts and creepiness, this story actually scared me more than usual. And I was rooting for the ghost. World gone mad, I tell you.

Spoilers right ahead…not following you. And the big one is at the bottom.

Melinda meets an attorney, Shane, with an attached ghost, Colleen, who happened to be his victim when she was alive. She, in the afterlife, is going to do the same thing to him… stalk him forever. Go ghost! But Shane is not scared of ghost Colleen, and in fact "breaks up" with her when he decides to pursue Melinda instead. Shane systematically targets Delia and Jim, to try and get Melinda to himself.

And for the first time that I can remember in this show, Melinda works with the ghost to get even with the living. No, not a lot of talk from Melinda about moving on into The Light after she starts getting stalked! She teams up with wandering soul to get the living guy! Together, they get into Shane's office to copy the computer files he's been keeping on his victims. While they are there, they realize the modern art prints on Shane's wall are blown-up pieces of Colleen's crime scene pictures. Egads. They then send copies of the photo, along with emails and other unsavory pieces of information, to Shane's entire law firm and client listing. Stripped of his own power, he caves. In the end, the detective that helped Colleen when she was alive – and who carried a torch for her – gets him for identity theft, and Melinda helps Colleen cross over, after an agreeably melancholy ghostie moment. It's like Law & Order meets Ghost Whisperer.

But then, THEN, Melinda finds out Shane has committed suicide, and he shows up to haunt her forever… but instead he gets sucked in the strange door in her basement. Artful tie-in back into the overarching plot of the serious evil underneath Grandview! The stand-alone episode detour has come full circle, grasshoppers! And from the teaser, the dark spirits are back next week, just in time for Halloween. Exclamation point! Huzzah!

Colleen (played by Sarah Utterback who was very good, and she was good on Grey's Anatomy as well; yes, that's where you've seen her) has some great art direction. When she's empowered, strong, and working with Melinda, she's in full color, but when she's scared of Shane, she's gray and removed. That was a nice touch.

And I kind of like the ghost as a sidekick thing. I know Melinda is the lone ghost ranger, but having a dead assistant would be a fun twist on things. It would free up some of Dr. Payne's time to teach, or whatever he does.

Other random thoughts:

  • An episode without Jay Mohr is always a sad episode.
  • Still the computer helps along with the storyline. It's becoming a consistent method of storytelling in this show, and it works because the producers extend it into the "real world" internet. Is it real or is it geek?
  • Please, writers, give Jim (David Conrad) and Delia (Camryn Manheim) something to do! They're both being wasted! It probably takes longer to get make-up and hair done than it does to say their lines!
What do you think? You ready to dive back into the Where's My Dad? and the Who Are the Creepies Underneath storylines? Or do you want a longer break? And are you going to watch the Ghost Whisperer producer's séance online on Halloween?

Comments

"No Safe Place" was absolutely surprising to say the lease. It was defiantly better then the Season Premiere, which at the time I thought was great.

I'm hoping next weeks episode can top this because if it can then yeah! for the rest of the season :-p.

I liked this episode. I really liked seeing more Jim this week up to this point in the new season his participation seemed to be lacking. Delia's scenes showed how she is becoming more understanding of Melinda's gift which I liked. She also had more than one scene which was great. Colleen was an interesting ghost and Shane was creepy. They only have four main characters and they can't seem to be able to give all three of the supporting actors sufficiant time on screen. After weeks of barely showing Jim and Delia they now leave Prof. Payne completely out of the story? Other shows can keep track of more characters than that and keep decent running storylines for all. That I hope can be improved upon.

This show is such old news, everybody's got a ghost whisperer on their show these days (see upcoming House episode) so who cares?

Dennis | Oct 19, 2007 10:25:34 PM | #

Dennis, then isn't Medical dramas also considered "old news" as you put it towards Ghost Whisperer? Please trying watching it before bashing it, it is after all considerate to those that actually like the show.

I love this show!! Did anyine see the CSI Miami "ghost whisperer" themed show? Tim Speedle's ghost helped solve the crime but they explained it off as Delko's brain damage form being shot. On the fashion front, all wardrobe choice seemed appropriate.

Jeffrey and Don thanks for defending Ghost Whisperer from Dennis. I saw what he wrote last night and I think you both put him in his place maybe now he will no longer put us, the fans down for liking it. We have as much right to like Ghost Whisperer as he does House.

The worst episode yet. This show gets worse every week. It exists only as a showcase for Jennifer Love Hewitt's breasts. It is now being beat every week by Deal or No Deal in the ratings so I'm sure it will be cancelled real soon.

Greg, Greg, Greg, guess you've migrated from imdb.com to Zap2it. To get facts straight since Deal or No Deal debuted back in late 2006 (GW still in it's last half of Season 1) it has always often beat GW, but their both still on. So repeating yourself here and on imdb.com doesn't says anything about which show goes bye bye. Also your prediction has failed for two years in a row so it doesn't quite make you a reliable predictor of these things.

I'm not trying to be hard but I'm see his comments on imdb and if you've seen then you'd want to say the exact same thing.

GOoooo Jeffrey! Man, Greg, get real life and let fans actually post about the show... it's all so one-sided.. It seems like your a hater of the show... so don't even bother to watch it.

Great episode btw and the twist at the end shock me but it was a great conclusion.

Jay mohr is great but he's annoying. it was great not to see him in the episode( i think he wasn't in it).
