Parkman steps up on 'Heroes'

By Rick Porter

October 15, 08:27 PM

Greggrunberg_heroes_s2_240 Heroes narrowed its focus ever so slightly Monday -- even though yet another new character made her debut -- and the result was possibly the tightest episode this season. That's good.

Then again, Adrian Pasdar shaved and we spent entirely too much time with West. That's not good. Still, I think the former outweighs the latter tonight.

(Spoilers for the sadly Hiro-less but blessedly Peter-free episode coming up.)

The biggest and most important information came courtesy of Parkman's investigation, and to this I say: About time. About time Greg Grunberg got a compelling story for his character, and about time Parkman became a central figure in the show's ongoing narrative after spending a good portion of last season as part of the JV.

Investigating Kaito Nakamura's death, he and his partner -- who, by the way, is named Bryan Fuller  -- interrogate Angela Petrelli, who offers up a bogus confession. Fuller is happy enough to close the case, but Parkman knows she's lying, while she mentally urges him to let it go, lest people "find out about all of us."

If the alternative is all the previous generation ending up dead, though, is that such a bad thing? And Angela, even if she is having major regrets about her life, doesn't seem like the noblest person around -- so whatever or whoever she's protecting must be pretty freakin' big.

Parkman enlists Nathan's help in trying to turn Mrs. Petrelli around, and the newly de-bearded one also offers up a group photo from which the torn image of Kaito and Angela was taken. The whole gang is there -- both elder Petrellis, Linderman, Kaito, Charles Deveaux -- and, interestingly, to us anyway, Stephen Tobolowsky's Bob. Parkman, however, zeros in on the guy at the edge of the picture: It's his dad, whom Matt hasn't seen in 20-odd years.

Oh, but that's not all. When Matt asks Molly for help in finding his father, she freaks out. Papa Parkman, it seems, is also the guy who's been haunting her dreams. She eventually relents and agrees to find him, over Suresh's objections, only to be ... what? Sucked, Freddy Krueger-style, into a nightmare? That's what it seemed like, anyway, although she's still conscious enough to send a mental distress signal to Matt.

Giving Parkman a past like that makes the character exponentially more interesting. The stakes for him now go up a great deal, and that can only be to the good of the show. Heroes has been at its best when it allows its characters to become more than just their abilities, and this story has the potential to do that for Parkman.

We already know a fair amount about Claire and her relationship with her father, so I'm less enamored with the shopworn story she's involved in, sneaking out to be with a boy and lying to dear old dad about it. Or maybe it's just the boy. It's not just me, right? I mean, maybe I'm just getting old, but his particular brand of teenage romanticism ("I know you can heal, but I never want to see you hurt," after which my notes say "ewwwwwww") makes me want to punch the kid.

Danadavis_heroes_s2_240 Elsewhere, we met Micah's cousin Monica (new regular Dana Davis), who's got big dreams about getting out of New Orleans but, at least according to her co-worker, trouble putting them into action. Of course, now that she realizes she can do anything she sees someone else do -- whether that's carving a rose from a tomato or copying Rey Mysterio's signature move -- maybe that'll change. That's kind of a cool ability; I wonder, though, if her skills will be limited to copying regular folks. If she sees Nathan fly, could she take off too?

(And did you notice that Monica's manager at the burger place was Big Mike from Chuck?)

Maya and Alejandro also got more interesting this week, though only because they crossed paths with Sylar (who for now has re-assumed his given name, Gabriel Gray). So I guess that wasn't an island he was imprisoned on last week, just a remote spot three days' walk from wherever in Mexico the twins came across him.

Sure, it's a contrivance, with Maya blabbering on about Chandra Suresh's book and how they need to find him and all that. And yes, we had a Travels with Sylar story last season. But I think watching Sylar manipulate them and try to hold his hunger for their powers in check could be entertaining.

One more thing: HRG and the Haitian are on their way to Odessa ("Texas?" "Ukraine.") to track a lead on the paintings. Not much else there at the moment, but given what's in the first and last pictures in the series, the other six are probably worth finding.

Having dealt with Parkman and the twins, Heroes next week will try to make Peter's Irish sojourn cool via the introduction of Kristen Bell. Works for me.

How about you? Psyched to see Veronica Mars with powers? Happy to have Parkman front and center for once?

Comments

Veronica Mars looks to be quite witty still, which is good for me. Too bad she's in Peter's storyline (I don't like Peter). I guess we'll see Monica grow, but so far her powers are a little bit similar to Peter's. Ok, so with the twin's storyline...how the heck did Sylar manage to meet up with them? I hope they go into this on the show...that was way to convenient. Also, I remember from last season that when we saw a close up of Sylar's blood dragged into the sewer there was a cockroach right? Well there was also a cockroach next to the car-thief Jersey guy. Anyone think this might be some clues???

Oh yea, and I was so happy to not have to listen to Hiro and Peter this week! But I think that means that we will be getting more of them next week :(

gus | Oct 15, 2007 8:47:23 PM | #

What's with all the expositional dialog this season? I mean the characters sit down and talk about stuff we already know. It gets annoying. The new character is not well written you could see that she going to beat someone up tonight from a mile.

Jim | Oct 15, 2007 8:49:33 PM | #

Welcome back Heroes, these past few weeks have beeen sad. I can't wait for Kristen Bell next week...

Sophomore slump no more!!

DG | Oct 15, 2007 9:20:20 PM | #

I really liked the introduction of Monica this week, because it gives me a fresh look on the show and the Katrina ravaged New Orleans angle is very interesting. I am kinda upset, Rick, that you didn't mention Micah or the "big" reveal of what happened between Parkman and his wife. I thought that also helped rounded out to his character tonight.

Mark O. Estes | Oct 15, 2007 9:20:32 PM | #

I was SO glad not to have to deal with Hiro's lame storyline this week! I missed Peter, but having Kristen Bell finally come up next week more than makes up for it!!

eahilbert | Oct 15, 2007 11:18:10 PM | #

I too liked that they explained why Matt isn't with his wife anymore.

I don't like the fact that Dana Davis got opening credit right away rather than at least 1/2 a season of guest starring first (the way Jack Coleman did last year) - heck Ando (James Kyson Lee) didn't get opening credit until this year. The Haitian still doesn't get opening credit. I'll have no problem if Kristin Bell gets opening credit next week b/c she's earned that through her previous work, Dana Davis has/had not. JMO.

What's funny is that Hayden is the only Hero who hasn't missed an episode and Jack Coleman has only missed 1 ep and he wasn't even a permanent star at the beginning of last year. Everyone else has missed at least 2 episodes (now that Hiro missed his 2nd tonight).

Rishi | Oct 16, 2007 2:27:46 AM | #

This episode is definitely better than last week.

I love Nathan in this episode. Adrian Pasdar brings so much to the show that it's a shame he's underused.

Did anyone else notice that the stolen car which Sylar and the Wonder Twins are driving is the same car that was stolen from Claire? It was a Nissan Rogue and had California license plates. Seems too much to be a coincidence to me.

Also, I love the show but why would Sylar murder the poor guy with a brick? Seems amateurish to me with all the powers that he has.

Me | Oct 16, 2007 5:20:50 AM | #

Sylar doesn't have his powers anymore- that's why he boinked the guy with a brick. I think it is also why he is going by his pre-hero identity.

Beth | Oct 16, 2007 5:38:08 AM | #

Mix feeling for me.

So glad I don't have Hiro on my tv screen this week. Why can't they just kill him off, sigh.

But sad to see no Peter this week, BOO. But I'm looking forward to next week :)

Jett | Oct 16, 2007 6:21:20 AM | #

I think the show has finally just about got over retelling the heroes stories from last season for anybody who may be new to the show, which is very good, because it was getting on my nerves. To Me, I think you must have missed last week's episode. The Rogue is almost assuredly Claire's and Sylar has through some yet unknown process lost his ability to use his powers at all.

Kevin | Oct 16, 2007 6:22:24 AM | #

I liked the episode and I thought the Parkman dad was a good twist.
I think Sylar knows he's evil but he hasn't connected why yet? I wonder if once he sees the "Sylar" on his watch if it'll trigger something? He still creeps me out. I actually think he's more dangerous right now because he doesn't know what he's capable of.

I don't mind Claire and West. It's giving her normalcy that her family life can't. She can't talk about who she really is even with her parents and West gives her that out. I just hope he is on the up and up. I think it's normal for her to start questioning her dad again. She's been silent for 4 months and is acting like a typical teenager. ;)

Can't wait for Elle's first appearance next week. I clapped when I saw the previews and my husband just looked at me like I had lost my mind. LOL

Julie | Oct 16, 2007 6:23:26 AM | #

Did anyone else notice that the woman standing next to Parkman's father in the picture was Joanna Cassidy? I assume we will be introduced to her character sometime this year. Does this show have the largest cast in TV? Just too many characters and story lines.

SteveB | Oct 16, 2007 6:26:51 AM | #

I liked where they are taking the Parkman storyline. He was the 'B' plot for far to long last season.
I am sooo tired of Claire. I couldn't care less that she misses cheerleading or that her parents are on her case all the time. So much teenage angst! You can regenerate! Life could be a whole lot worse! I don't love West and could use alot less of this storyline.
Missed Peter and Hiro this episode, but I loved Nathan. I want to know more about his family situation... what has changed since his wife was healed by Linderman last season, why did she take the kids and leave... I need more info. Especially since I have always been a little suspicous of the wife.
Oh and who thought Claude (the invisible man) would have been in the picture with the 12?

Mandy | Oct 16, 2007 6:48:33 AM | #

I don't see what your problem is with the Peter story line. I think it's pretty interesting. I really want to know what happened after the explosion, and Peter really does seem to have the ultimate power of them all.

I also don't mind West. He doesn't annoy me, and I'm sure he'll figure greatly eventually.

About Monica - she seems so far to be only able to copy what people on t.v. do. I don't see any indication that she copies what real people do. Maybe it is in the same vein as Micah's power - technologically related.

Sue | Oct 16, 2007 7:09:32 AM | #

First, anyone notice Claire's new boytoy (is his name ADAM West? -- part biblical and part Hollywood) resembles "the missing Petrelli trioplet" more than Clark Kent?
Second, 6-1-9, good sign that the seriously fake and the fakely serious sports-entertainment industry is getting a bit more mainstream attention.

Third, wouldn't it be funny if the heroes traced their origins to ONE being with all (or most) of one generation's abilities considering a few of the abilities seem to be overlapping?

Fourth, writing-wise, Sylar should have said he knew the son of the doctor, who was continuing his late-father's work. Sounds less conniving that way. (And what's with the watch? My bunny-ears didn't catch the time; did the Doomsday clock turn up or down?)

Good to see Heroes coming down from EPIC proportions and into fleshing out characters.

It is a bit weird that I actually look forward to the "lulls" of Heroes instead of the season climaxes (premiere and finale) because they offer better answers and resolutions?

pakopako | Oct 16, 2007 7:14:37 AM | #

Unless this has already been posted and I've missed it: Why has no one seemed to care that HRG, according to Isaac's painting, is going to die because of Claire and her fly-boy? Even though I'm still not sure I quite trust him I would nonetheless hate to see his character gone. Anyone else agree? Or disagree, for that matter?

Lee | Oct 16, 2007 7:19:33 AM | #

I don't really get all the complaints, in general. I have watched since Day 1 and have not been annoyed with this season at all.

I don't think they are repeating themselves to the point of being annoying. This has always been a slowly unfolding show that gets better and better as it continues and, as with the first season, this season started back at square one to begin building all over again. Just appreciate this show for what it is, one of the best ones on television.

As for the Claire and West storyline, they are teenagers. This show is also aimed at teenagers, so you have to make allowances for what the day-to-day lives of those characters would be. West does not annoy me at all, he is just a kid excited to have found someone that can understand him. I DO think after last night's episode, though, that he is going to turn out to be evil. There is something in the way he was talking to Claire on the Hollywood sign that felt wrong, like it was leading to something. We'll see.

And how can anyone be dissing Hiro's storyline? It is going to become exponentially more important when it is revealed (at least by my theory) that the murderer is David Anders character.

Travis | Oct 16, 2007 7:27:30 AM | #

So, is Nathan in Congress or not? His kids are living in DC...

PhilipDC | Oct 16, 2007 7:29:21 AM | #

Lee--Noah (aka HRG) and Suresh are aware that Noah is in the painting. And Noah is very much worried about what is going on in that painting, and that is the reason he has forbidden Claire from dating. That's also why he and the Haitian are headed out to find the rest of the paintings. Personally, I think it will turn out to be different than what he is expecting, though, and won't be Claire at all.

And I also agree that West is not on the up and up, just read my previous posting.

Travis | Oct 16, 2007 7:31:36 AM | #

It's NOT the same guy from CHUCK you racist, you think black people all look the same?

The World | Oct 16, 2007 7:45:26 AM | #

Pakopako - are you saying West is resembles one of the "missing Petrelli" "triplets"? I hope not, because that would make West Claire's uncle, and that would just be icky.

Sue | Oct 16, 2007 7:58:58 AM | #

this second season is unbearable now. Did they fire last year's writing staff or something? what happened? how did the plot lines and writing become so cliche and thin? It just boggles the mind on how bad the writing is this season. It's as if all the terrible hollywood bigwhigs and execs saw this shwo was hot after the first season and decided to get their dirty shallow hands involved and ruined everything.

Dan | Oct 16, 2007 8:10:54 AM | #

The guy who played the restaurant manager is definitely the same guy who plays the store manager on Chuck. Unless he has an identical twin. I don't know why the statement would be considered racist.

The Store manger on Chuck is Mark Christopher Lawrence. The same guy who was in this episode of Heroes. Check out the credits.

Do you think Maybe the guy West saw with the HRG might be Bob, the new guy Suresh is working for? Dosent he have HRG's on?

If not, I also kinda think West might be playin' for the bad team also.

Ray | Oct 16, 2007 9:32:33 AM | #

Like usual more questions and fewer answers. The Parkman reveal was neat, and might lead to an interesting conflict between matt and his dad over Molly. Also, once Molly gave matt the freaking building his Dad was living in, that was enough you don't need the apartment number.

Wow, Sylar is with the Wonder Twins; and yet I don't care.

Pakopako:, Sylar was looking at the watch, because it said 'Sylar' that is where Gabriel, got his name last year. The Twins asked his name and he said Gabriel and glanced at his broken watch. Because he is broken without his powers and thus no longer Sylar.

So Micah's Cousin has what in comics is called
"photographic reflexes" I guess she will be renting some Bruce Lee movies soon.

Not loving Claire and her secret love affair with West. Where is Nikki? is Ali Landry shooting a film; would like to know about her illness story? Would prefer to see more of Hiro or even Peter's "who am I' storyline. Which returns next week with Ms. Bell playing an evil agent.

jbw | Oct 16, 2007 9:55:05 AM | #

This episode was fantastic and im finally glad they left Hiro out of an episode. I guess im one of the few here that can not stand his storyline in Japan and felt that the last 3 episodes wasted to much time on it. Hopefully they rap it up soon because I find it boring as hell. Matt and Nathan were great last night really enjoying the storyline thats going on there.

Claire and her creepy boyfriend were the only letdown this episode. Is Hayden Panettire required to be in every damn episode?

Kelly | Oct 16, 2007 10:09:47 AM | #

Last night show was alright. I like Micah, Matt, Molly, West, Bob, Bennet and Claire’s storyline. They all seem to be progressing the season nicely.

My biggest problem was with Sylar. I just don’t get it. How does he meet up with the wonder twins? So he’s just going to have the Life and death power, too! Please someone stomp out the roach, already!

I would have been happy to see a Linderman Character return than a Sylar Character return.

I’m not look forward to a Peter return. I was really disappointed with his character storyline last week. I hope Kristen Bell can save that storyline.

Monica is a great addition to the show. I hope we see her become the Hero/Vigilante Type we need for some good kick ass episodes.

In the center of the 12 elders picture wasnt that Kensai? I didnt tape the show so I couldnt rewind it. Can anyone confirm

James | Oct 16, 2007 10:27:41 AM | #

I'm thinking, how they'll explain Peters appearance in Ireland... Right when he was about to kaboom he used, or the explosion caused, Hiro's powers to bend space and send him away. Something like that, anyway :P

Patrick | Oct 16, 2007 10:38:51 AM | #

The Guy Standing nxtto Angela Petrelli is Arthur Petrelli. His photo is ment to be distorted so there is a chance that hes out there alive!

Peter Allan Ker | Oct 16, 2007 10:43:13 AM | #

Steve B... you weren't the only one who picked up on Joanna Cassidy in the picture of the 12. Interesting casting, since we already know she can do Sci-Fi via her role in Blade Runner.

Mike | Oct 16, 2007 10:52:47 AM | #

Let me get this straight..

HRG (while working for the company) tracks West and does the kidnap/neck poke to him. HRG then moves his family to the same town West lives in.

There's something fishy going on with either HRG or West.

Scott | Oct 16, 2007 11:20:28 AM | #

I thought this was an extremely enjoyable episode (even if some of West's lines to Claire were super cheesy, but hey, for high school kids, they would probably work).
But ok... if Claire was a cheerleader, wouldn't her family go to the games to see her? I just think her lie has an expiration date on it.

I find it interesting how torn people are on what storylines people do or don't like. I actually have enjoyed Hiro's story quite a bit (although I think it probably should have ended last episode). And I like Peter, but his story felt a bit like filler.
Oh, and Parkman is now awesome.

And I thought it was pretty easy to figure out what Monica's power is. As soon as she made the tomato into a rose, I realized she could emulate anything she saw (like the obscure comic character Taskmaster). I'm pretty sure she won't be able to copy powers, though. Cuz then she'd be too much like Peter.

Billiam | Oct 16, 2007 11:34:57 AM | #

Doesn't Bob also wear Horn Rim Glasses? I thought it was Nikki/Jessica struggling or holding on to Peter in that painting from last week.

MenOnO | Oct 16, 2007 12:00:09 PM | #

I did something during this episode I hadn't done since I began watching the series from the beginning, I turned it off about half way through the episode!
Like most fantasy shows, you have to put up with a lot of contrivances and flimsy explanations. Also there are usually too many obvious plot points and cheesy characters, but the saving grace is that shows like "Heroes" should never be uninteresting and last night I had to finally admit that this season has me completely BORED!
The new characters are all tiresome (Yippee! A new hero from New Orleans, isn't that so topical and inspiring?!) and the storylines are lame.
This isn't a sophomore slump, this is a career ending injury!

Will | Oct 16, 2007 12:13:00 PM | #

I love how anyone presuming to say anything about how a person of a certain ethnic group who just might have been in two different shows on the same night is considered a racist. We have come so far in this country...pity the distance has been driven mostly in reverse. Anyway, I won't give that idiotic comment by The World several posts up any more time than that, as it deserves less than what I've already given it. For the episode itself, I give it higher marks than the past few, mainly because Hiro wasn't in it. Don't get me wrong, I've been a Hiro fan from day one, but really, his storyline could've been wrapped up in ten minutes. As for Claire, I'd like to know if she is going to end up like Maia on The 4400, where she was touted as one of the most important characters on the show, yet mostly is on with little to do. I'd watch Hayden Panetierre reading from the phone book for several hours, just because it would be her, but still...unless and until her character's presence is explained beyond that of the obvious (18-25 male population watches show, hence blonde goddess to occupy their dreams, etc), they need to place her storyline on the back burner for awhile. I am also glad that Mohinder (love that name) and Parkman are getting the most interesting of the storylines. I still think that Molly is either a conduit who is being used by the villain to find the people in the larger photograph (since her ability is being able to find anyone, anywhere), or she herself is the villain. I know that would fly in the face of the usual goings-on of shows like this, but it certainly would be a new spin on things. Even if Molly is unaware of what she is doing, I'd much rather see her being used to off members of the previous generation than some smoke-and-mirrors boob who hasn't even been cast yet. Anyway, and finally, I loved the parental dilemma of Claire's father, who had to decide which was worse...Claire rejoining the cheerleading squad, or Claire dating. As an improper and somewhat ick-ish aside, since Claire's power involves her being able to heal from any injury, does that mean she'll always be a virgin? Just wondering...

Dark Disciple | Oct 16, 2007 12:15:42 PM | #

I thought it was very purposeful how they showed the picture of the 12. The two on the right were barely shown, but you can see them if you freeze the frame. Arthur Petrelli was distorted so they can hire practically any actor of that age, weight, and height to play him in future episodes (not that I've heard anything). They intentionally focused on Joanna Cassidy along with "Dad" Parkman so we could get a good look at them both. Again, I haven't heard anything, but they must have both actors under contract to appear later in the season. Finally, they totally and consistently covered the person on the far right so we have no clue to what he/she looks like. They'll probably photoshop someone in once the story line gets to the point that they hire an actor to play the role.

Greg | Oct 16, 2007 12:18:34 PM | #

Correction to my earlier post: The two on the LEFT were barely shown.

First off, I really like the Peter storyline.

In other news, no you are not the only one who does not like West. I hope he is revealed as being EVIL because he is very annoying. As is Claire for lying to her Dad, btw, but I still like her.

I am SOOOOO psyched that Matt has a great storyline. That last scene was so creepy and good. Come back Molly!

Can't wait for the Nathan / Peter reunion, whenever the hell it may happen.

Crystal | Oct 16, 2007 12:56:42 PM | #

I enjoyed the episode a lot--easily the best so far--and I love the New Orleans storyline. All the characters--let's hear it for Nichelle Nichols!--there are very appealing.

Im surprised by the negativity twds Claire. I think Hayden P. is a wonderful actress--I certainly always look forward to her work. I have warmed up to West--I will admit to being very moved by his "never want to see you hurt" line.

Actually, if Im wearied by something, it's Matt and Mohinder's antagonism. I dunno how I feel about Matt--he veers bw being likable Everyman to obnoxious, heavygoing bumbler.

Im not terribly intrigued by the Peter and the Hiro storylines, though Im surprised at the negativity twds these characters. Also, I really like the twins! Theyre the only "good" heroes whose powers are truly ambiguous and frightening.

david g | Oct 16, 2007 1:09:51 PM | #

Monicas "Television Mimickry" ability seems interesting, I can't wait to see the extent of her abilities...

Timex | Oct 16, 2007 1:58:51 PM | #

I'm guessing Elle's power is the lightening ability that we saw Peter use. I say that only because I'm thinking she had something to do with putting Peter there since she says it's her mission. I don't know, just a guess!

gus | Oct 16, 2007 2:04:00 PM | #

I think the guy who freed the wonder twins from jail was sent there to do so and get them to the states. Hence, driving Claires stolen car. Perhaps HRG gave him the wheels? As for Sylar's happenstance to meet them - I wouldn't put it past him to lay there knowing they were on their way. Otherwise, it's just too conincidental.
Obviously there is a generational thing going on here w/ powers. Wouldn't be surprised if fly boy West is a Petrelli (Which would be weird because so is Claire!) Maybe that's why HRG wants to keep his kid away from him!

Reese | Oct 16, 2007 2:14:26 PM | #

Dark Disciple - are you serious? Don't tell me you are that naive, perhaps 15? Perhaps you should learn the facts of life from adults. What you are implying really doesn't happen.

A Woman | Oct 16, 2007 2:25:00 PM | #

What is it with you people always complaining about everything? It's a t.v. show for cripes sake. It's entertaining. As much or more so than most shows that are on. It's not a masterpiece, don't expect it to be. Think of the task - writing a show, with new episodes by the week, answering some questions but not all so people keep coming back, for who knows how long. They're really like soap operas at night. And you've got to be a little off to not really like a show, but then care enough to turn to a blog to trash it. I just don't get it. It's fun, and it's fine. You try doing it.

What was with the lingering emphasis on Micah's hand on Monica's back? Was there some sort of transference going on there?

SansMerci3 | Oct 16, 2007 2:46:02 PM | #

James, I wouldn't doubt that Kensai is in the 12, in fact I expect it...

A spoiler (**WARNING**) I heard said that Kensai is related to Claire and has lived until modern day.

This is why we are spending so much time with Hiro and Claire right now, leading up to this big reveal.

At least, if we can trust the spoiler. (I heard this on E!)

He was wishing that he could fix/manipulate her as he does with electronics. This would be an interesting evolution of his abilities. In fact, it would make sense (after all, what would Micah's ability give him in Kensai's day?)

I think this season we are going to see further evolution of powers. Nathan, I predict, has gained the ability to absorb powers. Matt's father seems to have some strong ability of the mind. In fact, if Matt's father is so scary, is it possible that Matt's powers could evolve such that they could rival that of Ted's?

I hope that Peter's jack-of-all trades ability will be downplayed this year in preference of a 'jack of all trades, master of none' senario. He will find that yes, he can use powers, but he cannot master them as can the original bearers.

I don't think Monica and Peter's powers are similar at all. It looks like Monica can only mimic skills, as seen by her copying the wrestling moves and the tomato rose. I doubt she'd be able to mimic powers as well. I'm surprised to see that a lot of people are discontent with the season so far. It seems like they're on the same course as the first season, and I'm really enjoying it. I'm really warming up to the new characters as well. I can't wait to see what direction they take Monica and the twins.

Normally, I wouldn't respond to a comment from a person who identifies themselves as "A Woman," but I thought the post was so funny, I had to reply. No, I'm not naive, nor am I 15 (praise all that is unholy for that); I just get tired of people finding offense where none was intended. That's all, nothing else. The lesson from this for me is, simply, I shan't respond to idiotic comments like that one or this one in the future, and just focus on the show. Otherwise, this site will turn into a virtual dodgeball game, and we really don't want that now, do we? (Oh, and if you can show me a 15-year-old who can write as well--relatively speaking--as I can, I'd like to shake their hand. Also, I'm 38, so the adult you would be referring to, "A Woman", would be me.) Bye now!

There are 14 members of the company. Not 12. A manor spoiler for you!

Carl | Oct 16, 2007 4:04:07 PM | #

Sorry lol, typo, there are 13 members of the company. The image that we saw in 'The Kindness of Strangers' of the company was one of many. If you compare the segmented pictures of Angela and Hiro's father you will notice that to the right of Hiro's dad there is a white shoulder. In the one we saw 'Bob' was stood next to Hiro's father. This could indicate that the picture was taken more than once.

I want to go on record as loving both the Hiro and the Peter storylines (but not so much the actress that plays Peter's Irish love interest). Hope we get some more good Irish crime plot lines, but it seems unlikely as Kristen Bell's character may disrupt the ol' gang.
I think Hiro's staying in Japan will turn out to include a wonderful plot twist we will all come to know and love.
I think Micah's "fix it" power is similar to Sylar's original "I can sense what is wrong with something" power -- which lead Sylar to the evil abilities to steal powers by murdering folks.... but maybe it will lead Micah to something good, since he has been shown to have a good nature... but, on the other hand, both of his parents have been / are criminals ... hmmmmmm....

I am SO psyched to see Parkman taking a front and center role! I LOVE Greg Grunberg and I've loved Parkman's character all along even if people thought he was flat and boring. I love the eternal good guy though, I just do. I especially love the complexity with Molly this season. I just adore seeing Parkman hug her and comfort her as if he was her father. It makes me happy. :)

Last season was soooo lame and predictable (the ending of which I predicted with uncanny accuracy; and which got yanked from these postings because of it).
You think with Jeph Loeb on board, the storylines would be interesting, logical, and entertaining. NOT!
Whatever happened to using less flamboyant powers, but making their use with an interesting twist? Like the guy who's nose hair when pulled turns into needle-like spikes? Or the frigid girl who causes both men, women, and animals have disabling orgasms at a touch? How about the anti-beano kid that produces highly noxious and flammable gases? C'mon already!
Lest we forget, we live in a world filled with stories of aliens, tech run amok, and superhero stories. Anyone who has superpowers wouldn't be looked upon as freaks. They'd mostly get a few moments of fame, then treated as a novel yet ordinary event. Heck, even OJ can walk around (or used to) and be himself. So, all this conspiracy and hiding is not realistic. If I could fly and catch bullets with my toes, I'd be out there in Vegas making the hard cash and boinking the ho's.
Get over yourselves, Heroes producers and fans! Until you mainstream the concept, put the heroes in the everyday, mundane limelight, make mine Marvel (or even DC). At least the heroes their are already outted!

Morgan | Oct 16, 2007 6:53:58 PM | #

Normal people with extraordinary abilities is what Heroes is about. I don't think these abilities are that extraordinary. Birds fly, animals have armor and great strength, fish breathe underwater, chameleons blend in invisibly, spiders spin webs and have spider sense (lol. I threw that in!).
I too, would like to see either really weird powers not thought of in comic books that have a practical purpose and unusual applications.
By the way, I think Bob - the Midas Touch - Goldman (should be his surname, but probably isn't), should be able to turn stuff into gold or anything else (including the various phases of matter: solid, liquid, gas, and plasma). He's like a bald, Element Lad.
If you look closely at Heroes, this is really more like the Legion of Superheroes comic book during it's dark era, and less like the Watchmen novel.
I've pretty much lost interest in Heroes for the reason that it's too much like Days of Our Heroes Lives.

In the future that Hiro visited last season following the would-be devastation of New York, we learned that Parkman had become a father and that his child was gifted, too. It doesn't seem that the altered outcome with the Flying Brothers Petrelli would have changed the child's paternity.

And a theory on the significance of Nathan's sons in D.C.: Perhaps his (ex?) wife was appointed to serve in Congress in his stead?

Goph | Oct 16, 2007 7:22:57 PM | #

slyar should be dead move on to new people and new bad guys why can't hollywood kill off more people in TV shows they always do a good job killing black men try killing a few other folks too. new actors and new plots "GreysA" should have had all new people too you think with reality TV being so popular year after year Producers would get it. Its the concept not the actors people like. (actors are cheap if they only work a year instead of 5+ asking for more money every year

Best show so far this year although that's not saying much considering how slow they've been. The Wonder Twins' story finally got interesting with Sylar now tagging along. I want to know what the heck happened to Nathan. Did he somehow pick up the ability to heal or what? I can't wait to see what happened right after he took off with Pete. Parkman definitely got a whole lot more interesting now with this little nugget and i guess the wife and kid will now be completely out of the picture. I suspect that Nathan stepped down and perhaps the wife did take his place, so we might see her again.

steve | Oct 17, 2007 9:39:39 AM | #

Why do people think Nathan has the power to heal? I'm thinking he sees a reflection of his brother Peter. If Peter managed to survive the blast (which was always theorized in the show), then he should have receive a lot of damage. Nathan then must have seen Peter's face deformed, and it scared Nathan since Nathan was not use to seeing someone with that amount of damage still alive (he went into shock like when people see a dead mutilated body...only in this case the body was still alive!). I think the bigger surprise is how did Nathan survive the blast?

BTW, one poster mentioned it in passing, but since nobody has replied since: Consider that Monica's power May be to mimic any skill she sees ON TELEVISION, not in person.

HRG's moving his family to a town whose high school just happens to have another kid with powers. Sylar's lying in the road in front of M&A's car.

I hate these "coincidences," if that is what they are. If there is a reason for them in the Heroes universe, I'll listen, but the producers better not wait too long for some clues. Same goes for the cockroach. I do not want to see Heroes turn into Lost!

Red | Oct 17, 2007 12:49:29 PM | #

Everybody here seems to be missing the point of the Claire/West/HRG plotline. HRG (OK, Noah) is desperately trying to prevent the fulfillment of a prophecy -- and, as is traditional in literature -- he makes things worse.

In the 8th painting, the girl in the BG (who certainly looks like Claire) is wearing a cheerleader's uniform and kissing a boy. Noah thinks: Keep her away from boys, and it won't come true. So not only is she even more interested in West (lure of the forbidden, etc.), but to cover up seeing him she's going to have to join the cheerleading squad.

this ep was the best so far this year, but still not up to last year's quality.

i was sorely disappointed to see sylar lying in a road in civilization when last week's show gave the appearance that he was totally isolated somewhere. what a scam! that needs a definite explanation. what makes me think we won't get it?

also the coincidence of meeting the twins was a terrible plot point. if we're to accept that, the writers are really getting tired. there were none of these problems last season.

though i like claire and the hrg storyline, i'm not seeing a thing happen in the last 2 shows. what? this was supposed to be developing claire's romance? didn't we already see claire's duplicitousness last season? do we need to see it again?

anyone who'd have an inkling of trust in the kid west is toooo naive. he's been irksome since he was introduced. he's written that way.

i didn't even realize hiro wasn't in this ep until it was mentioned here. that's how much i missed him. the japanese stuff is too slow and dumb, imo. i did wish to see peter, tho, cause i'm so used to seeing him in every ep. but i can do without his storyline so far, too, so it wasn't a big miss.

i like the new character with the power to duplicate tv actions. i'll be looking forward to seeing more of her. i always like seeing micah doing whatever. look how much he's grown! he's a very compelling kid actor.

KR | Oct 17, 2007 7:31:10 PM | #

What are all these complaints about coincidences? Did you not watch last season because that's completely the norm for the Heroes universe. They're all connected somehow and have a part in a shared destiny. Remember Ando watching Nikki on his computer in Tokyo? Nathan landing at the same restaraunt in vegas where Hiro just happended to be sitting? Peter just happened to have a crush on Isaac's girlfriend? Suresh's blood just happens to be the cure for what ails? And Peter jumps in Suresh's cab out of all the cabs in NY? I can go on and on, but I think you see my point. There doesn't need to be an explanation, that's just the way things work.

J | Oct 18, 2007 11:26:34 AM | #

aha, j! you are correct about that. i had totally forgotten all those incidences from last season. thanx for refreshing me.

KR | Oct 18, 2007 8:24:55 PM | #

ahh... that cockroach thing someone said earlier is brilliant! It's very true that there is some clues with that... Probably something about how cockroaches look destructible, but they will be the only things left after a nuclear blast.

Anyway, i was very sad not to see hiro but it was a nice little twist about Parkman although he does get on my nerves. If he dies, it's not the end of the world. How sad that he pushed Molly to find his dad... we all knew what would happen to her.

Monica is a great new character. Good choice on actress. I like her ability and i think she only gets it from television. I'm hoping it's not the same as Peters.

BTw, I think Sylar does have one natural gift. He just may never have discovered it. In the beginning Suresh came to him and there has to be something special about him. he can't simply be a killer.
