'Heroes': They say that cat HRG is a bad ...

By Rick Porter

October 29, 08:39 PM

Jackcoleman_heroes_s2_240Monday's episode of Heroes was called "The Line," and I'm wondering if the show means "line" as in a thing you stand around in while waiting for something cool, because that's pretty much how I felt.

Several story lines were building, building, building, but if there was a real payoff to any of them -- and no, Claire getting over on the head cheerleader doesn't count -- I must have been looking at my screen while taking notes.

(Spoilers, such as they are, about to commence.)

What good there was came largely from Jack Coleman as HRG, who confronted confronted an old colleague (go-to Russian actor Elya Baskin) about Isaac's missing stash of paintings. His interrogation of Ivan gave Coleman a chance to sink his teeth into the amoral, remorseless HRG we haven't seen for a while, and as Coleman almost always elevates the material he's given, it was fun stuff.

Erasing an older man's memories is kind of a heavy card to play, and it made the stakes in the two former Company men's confrontation that much higher. And good for the show for having the stones to let HRG commit a vicious act at the end of their confrontation, after he has the information he wants. HRG doesn't have to be nice to be a character we want to see -- in fact, he probably shouldn't be.

It would've been nice, though, if the cache of paintings had told us more. I feel like there's a continuity error here; HRG has already seen the first painting in the series, which depicts Kaito Nakamura's death, and the last, which shows his own. He and the Haitian were on the hunt for the middle six, but we barely saw glimpses of two of those.

The camera pans across the following: a hand holding a vial; a woman (Niki?) pounding on a window or a wall; Hiro and Kensei doing battle (marked as No. 6 in the series); someone (Suresh? Sylar? Alejandro?) with a bandaged nose, pointing a smoking gun (No. 7); and the dead HRG. Off to the right in the wide shot is a painting of a freaked-out-looking Peter with a shadowy figure over his left shoulder, while to the left is a dark scene that gets no direct shot but appears to depict a woman. (Your thoughts, of course, are more than welcome in the comments).

Staring at the paintings, HRG wonders aloud, "What does it all mean?" A couple of them, it would seem, have to do with Suresh's work at the Company, but if there's a cohesive narrative in the series, I don't yet see it.

The night's other major story took us back to feudal Japan, where Hiro has convinced Kensei he's really a hero, and they manage to rescue Yaeko's father from the evil White Beard, who had been forcing the father to make him guns. Nothing could be that simple, though; after Hiro blinks Yaeko away from a bullet, she realizes he was the one who saved her from the bandits and who has been behind Kensei's change of direction. They kiss, and of course Kensei sees them, and of course out of spite and a misguided expression of love he turns Hiro over to White Beard in exchange for, presumably, Yaeko's hand.

I'm still not entirely sure where this is headed, how Hiro's actions in the past will affect the present-day stories. It does feel like it's about time, though, to wrap things up.

Speaking of, a brief run through the other storylines visited tonight:

Miloventimiglia_heroes_s2_240 Peter: He remains unaware of his past, but Peter at least has the sense to follow his painting to Montreal, Caitlin in tow. They find a building with the Godsend sign on it, a cache of artifacts and a note from one "Adam," who informs Peter that he was right about the Company. Since Elle is looking for him, and this Adam character is warning him about it, some of Peter's lost four months had to have been tied up with Company business.

Peter also supplies us with the setup for next week, wishing himself into an evacuated (and unconvincingly CG'ed) Times Square, circa June 2008 (which may have been what the painting of him showed). We learn from the teaser that 93 percent of humanity is gone and it's up to him and other hero-types to fix that.

The Company: Suresh -- surprise -- has ethical qualms about giving Monica a modified strain of the virus that could take away her power without harming her or, you know, kill her. Though his smashing of the case containing the strains is not the most politic of arguments, it apparently gets through enough to Bob that he lets Monica head back to N'Awlins, exhorting her to do some good with her new abilities. (He also gives her an iPod loaded with cool stuff to copy; I wonder if that scene was written before NBC cancelled its iTunes deal.)

Bob, meanwhile, is off to hunt down Adam Monroe, who's presumably the Adam from Peter's story and, Bob says, is a danger to the Company. So he leaves a curiously and creepily chipper Niki to watch Suresh.

Claire: She and West concoct a scheme to humiliate head cheerleader Debbie, involving him flying and Claire being dropped and broken on the school steps. Conveniently, Debbie's been drinking, so the cops write off her terrified rant as the ramblings of a drunken teenager, and she gets kicked off the squad to boot, opening a place for Claire.

That's an awful long way to go to give Claire a cover story for her dad, so it's good that it also illustrates how arrogant West ("I can fly. That makes the whole parental guidance thing a non-issue.") is becoming about his power. It also further solidifies my view of the character as a complete tool.

Sylar and the Wonder Twins: More good eeevil from Zachary Quinto here, as Sylar convinces Maya to use her power to do away with some Minutemen types as they cross the Mexico-U.S. border. Alejandro doesn't like what's happening to his sister, but Sylar loves the effect he's having on his new protege. "She's a shiny new toy, and she's all mine" has to be one of the more chilling lines delivered anywhere this fall.

For all that, though, we're not much further along than we were this time last week. Six episodes into the season, I was hoping for a little more than that.

Were you as well? Did Heroes spend too much time setting up future events this week, or were you happy with what developed?

Sophmore story lines at it's best. I wonder if this show will flunk it's second year? Or will it make the grade and make it to its junior year?

This is one uneven show. HRG shooting Russian- awesome; Claire's storyline- not even CW worthy. Totally agree with you about her boyfriend. I can't wait for Sylar to get rid of the twins and make himself useful. Regarding Hiro- he gets Yaeko out by teleporting, yet Kensei is right there to watch them kiss... how is that possible?

AC | Oct 29, 2007 9:12:53 PM | #

It's been slow, but it's still moving at a quicker pace than Season 2 of Lost was...remember when they decided to show the descent into the hatch from about 16 different points of view over about 11 episodes? (sadly, that's barely an exaggeration). Just as Lost was able to pull through a slow sophomore slump, I have faith that Heroes will to. It feels like they are building up to something epic, now they need to start paying off. Next week's episode looks pretty interesting, though I'm confused if the whole thing is gonna take place in the future (ala 5 Years Gone), or just the Peter storyline...in which case it could get really confusing, have Hiro in the past, Peter in the future, and everyone else in the middle.

Chris | Oct 29, 2007 9:15:33 PM | #

I must admit that I'm disappointed at tonight's reveal about 93% of humans dying. Why do this to us? I felt things were finally making sense, and now we get this entirely new dilemma that is way to similar to the NYC explosion, only at a larger scale. Is anyone pissed about that??

And we get yet a new character in the mix - Adam Monroe. Great.

The other thing that bugged me also was mentioned by AC. How did Kensei defeat his enemies and walk his way over to find Hiro and Yaeko kissing? My only guess is that Hiro also traveled into the future, but the writers never really clarified that to us...

When I was watching this episode, I kept feeling that the story would cut at the best part, only to return back into a disappointing reveal.

And I'm also tired of being reminded how certain Elder Heroes and The Company workers are just "trying to help the greater good" even if it means killing some heroes. We got it during season 1, let's not bash it over our heads again. Please.

In all, last week's episode was great! This week's episode was sucky. Let's cut Claire's, Hiro's, and Peter's "save the world" storyline please. But keep Sylar's, Monica's, and Bell's stuff.

gus | Oct 29, 2007 10:46:56 PM | #

Oh and Matt's, almost forgot that one.

gus | Oct 29, 2007 10:47:58 PM | #

Sylar's speech was great, I tell you great! It's not delissicio, it's DELIVERY! (sorry, I couldn't resist)

I also loved the execution by HRG of Elya Baskin's character. I liked that they didn't (let's be pc here) chicken out.

Lastly, wasn't the cheerleader's name Debbie Marshall (Jackie was Claire's cheerleader friend/rival in Texas)?

Rishi | Oct 29, 2007 11:18:48 PM | #

too bad claire can't grow her pudgy stump of a body into a Real Cheerleader's physique - than there would be no need to the fly dump and roll game they had to play on the head cheerleader to get that tree stump a spot on the cheer team.

The season is called Generations...

It's been my instinct that nothing interesting will be revealed or connected unless we're talking about a certain 12 people.

Seemingly, the further you get from talking about this earlier generation, the more dull the storyline seems i.e. Claire and what's his name.
(While I'm on that, I hate that they're writing Claire so stupid. Last season was about her learning not to be stupid and she seems worse off now that when we first met her.)

I hope if ever become a deranged psychopath I monologue as well as Sylar... I like his character a lot, but I keep feeling like... he died last season.. he was last season's bad guy... if he's back he can be bad, but the same old head-hunting nastiness is gonna get stale. Also the whole "you complete me" vibe of los hermanos won't last... I'm sure Sylar isn't fond of someone that can turn off the tears of terror.

Hiro wants to save history; but it doesn't look like it. How long can we bear it without a Masi Oka "Yatta!" We're supposed to accept that love is budding everywhere for Hiro, Peter, Claire... but I can't because I don't know the other halves... the Princess.. Irish Caitlin... and whats his name... They may love em by Episode 2, but I need a little more convincing.

Noah Bennet née HRG is back in top form. Why the Haitian can pick a memory to erase but not pick a memory to look at isn't the point. Noah's moment of insensitivity gets us our full series of paintings. I'll deal with it. Thanks HRG! Did I see a dead Claire on the school steps in painting 2/8? Maybe Claire's plot isn't so useless.

Finally, Peter makes contact with a different time zone and finds out he has to save the world, again! Luckily, he's got a little longer than 5 weeks this.. about a year if I'm remembering the time line correctly. But a year is quite a short time for 6 billion people to drop dead... Luckily someone still finds it important to print the daily newspaper. Maybe its much later than the paper said.

Overall, good things come to those who wait. "Four Months Ago" is right around the corner and I'm sure it will connect all these storylines to the one common purpose: a virus is going to kill the world... the old heroes are the key to stopping it.. let West get sucked into a jet engine...

P.S. Niki.. You can keep me honest whenever you want.

JL | Oct 30, 2007 12:14:47 AM | #

So the evil cheerleader starts the episode by asking:

"Do you realize how agonizing it is watching you people?"

Not a bad summary for the season so far!

Another scene of NY under attack? (or evacuated, I suppose.) Couldn't they have at least picked a different city so it feels slightly different than last year? I'm giving it two more episodes to get better or I'm out.

Can't wait for Lost to come back...

Willie Lumpkim | Oct 30, 2007 12:47:24 AM | #

it's the virus that's killed everyone in the next year or so. someone will spread it to normal humans.

Lost whoops Heroes sorry ass | Oct 30, 2007 1:40:53 AM | #

Actually the first painting was already in posession of someone in NYC if I recall. There were only 7 paintings in the warehouse.

Francesca | Oct 30, 2007 3:28:59 AM | #

Stop comparing this lame show to LOST. HEROES looks cheap, is paper thin and has one of the most insufferable leads in Hiro. Honestly, die in feudal Japan so we don't have to listen to your fingernails on a chalk board voice any more. LOST is epic, cinematic, well written and stocked with rich characters we care about. Sorry HEROES has to resort to killing off one shallow character after another to keep the shell game going to the geek chic crowd that is tuning in to the show in ever smaller numbers.

Ron H | Oct 30, 2007 3:32:15 AM | #

Mentioning Heroes in the same sentence as Lost is insane. Sorry, but even the suckiest episode of Lost still beats the best of Heroes. Having Heroes get the Emmy nom over Lost was one of the dumbest things I have ever heard of.

Having said that, I am a Heroes fan but the leaps of faith that I have to continuously take each week are getting tiresome.

For example, Hiro can stop time but instead of just pausing everything and rescuing Yaeko's father that way, they walk through an army camp in broad daylight with seemingly little resistance. And then, Kensei just happens to run into Hiro and Yaeko after the leap at the perfect time to see them kiss. Give me a break.

The whole Claire Bear and Screechy (sorry, he is just as annoying as the old cartoon character) story line is simply nonsensical. He doesn't seem to hide his flying at all yet no one ever sees him. The head cheerleader is caught drinking, suspended from school and kicked off the cheerleading team all in one night. Talk about being guilty until proven innocent.

Come on writers, start moving things along. I really don't want to relegate Heroes to PVR status.

| Oct 30, 2007 4:53:10 AM | #

I believe the 93% has something to do with the .07 that Linderman talked about, right?

tiff | Oct 30, 2007 5:03:19 AM | #

ok, first of all stop comparing Heroes to Lost. There is no comparison and even though it took a month for Lost to show the same scene in the hatch in season 2, that was still 100 times more suspenseful and compelling TV than Heroes has ever had. The problem with Heroes is that they have too many stories going separately at the same time, so you see 4 or 5 unrelated(at this time) stories at the same time and you only have about 7-8 minutes of time to devote to each of them per episode. They should never have added any more characters.
That being said, i'm in the minority on the whole Claire storyline. yes, we've already seen the cheerleader story, but we haven't seen her be tempted by the dark side. West is a punk, but it will be interesting to see how far he can push Claire. I suspect she may start to believe she's better than all the puny humans. That could make for some interesting stuff down the road.

steve | Oct 30, 2007 6:07:26 AM | #

Did anyone notice the old godsend flag at Adam's place? This makes me think that Adam Monroe is Kensei.

This season is called generations because it's incorporating the lives from three generations (four if you count Kensei as another generation). You have the last generation in the company, the current generation in the adults (like Peter and Matt) and the future generation in the kids (like Molly or Micah). I think the battle of generations will soon heat up.

I see this episode as a more transitional episode than we're used to. Think of it as giving us the backstory to the next episode, where we see Suresh's fears about the virus being realized in the future.

I'll bet they reveal Adam Monroe as Kensei in the next few episodes to tie everything together.

Yossarian | Oct 30, 2007 6:08:03 AM | #

Sorry about the double cheerleader name. Debbie is correct, forgot to change that when I uploaded the post (fixed now).

Rick | Oct 30, 2007 6:10:14 AM | #

I think the mutation of the virus is what kills off 93% of humanity. And so the current group needs to stop the company from doing more research.
Could have definatley done without the Claire storyline. Why is she in every episode, no one cares!
Also, loved the return of the old HRG, but that storyline really had me tearing up. That is a cruel form of torture for an old man. And then to kill him in the end? Classic HRG.

Mandy | Oct 30, 2007 6:36:17 AM | #

what's going on here? A virus. Come on. What is this X last stand meets the 4400. Heroes season 1 was incredible but now i feel like I'm watching something on CW. I'm giving it one more episode and I'm out.

Rob | Oct 30, 2007 6:53:11 AM | #

The thing that bothers me most about Hiro is that he can travel through time, so if you mess up, just go back a minute or so and don't do it again! More Nikki, less West.

Ken | Oct 30, 2007 7:08:42 AM | #

Hate to say it but, it's just not doing it for me. Everything feels forced or cliche. I'll keep watching but I'm losing interest. I missed last weeks episode and didn't even feel like I'd missed anything. I'll keep watching for now but it all seems so pointless.

Loved that comment from the poster about at least someone feels its important to keep printing the newspaper. Hysterical.

sac | Oct 30, 2007 7:15:25 AM | #

When the episode opened with Peter, I knew it wasn't going to be good. This is the first episode of Heroes I've felt disappointed in. It's sad, because I liked first season Claire and Peter, now I can't stand their characters.
More importantly, why add all these new characters and the 98% of the population dying [aka Five Years Gone plot]. why not focus on the past generation and their characters. One of the best episodes of the season was last week when we meet Matt's dad.
Oh maybe the third season will be better.

eva | Oct 30, 2007 7:43:12 AM | #

i hope i never have to hear or read about a Heroes -vs- Lost contest. Lost is by and far the best show ever. HEROES WILL NEVER ACHIEVE anything lOST HAS. iTS LIKE COMPARING A rolls royce to a ford car, theres is just no comparing.

tiff said:

"I believe the 93% has something to do with the .07 that Linderman talked about, right?"

If Linderman really said that, then tiff, you are a genius. For those who don't know, .07 is the same as 7 percent (93% + 7% = 100%, duh).

What is frustrating me about Season Two is the complete abandonment of the "relationships" formed in Season One, like when Matt and Nathan met in the police station earlier in the season, and they acted like they had not clue who the other one was, at first. What? Have none of the group that was united at the end of Season One been keeping in touch with one another?

In other words, "THE TRANSITION" from Season One to Season Two has been very choppy and disorganized.

I'm not worried about the storyline, because I know it's headed somewhere, but I am pissed off that Six Episodes into Season Two I still don't know what happened up in the air when Nathan and Peter flew off at the end of the first Season!

Where did HRG's wife come from? His wife and son disappeared at the end of last Season. I didn't see anyone rescue them from "the company."

It's like the writers want us just to forget most things that happened in Season One, but they want us to remember "NY City" by reusing the same "sets" that they used in Season One?

What is NBC counting on? Everyone being focused on NY next year because of a Giuliani versus Rodham-Clinton Presidential Election?

Well, if that's the race for 2008, I won't be participating in that foolishness, and I might not be watching Heroes at that time either if they don't begin adding to the plot from last year.

tiff's "Linderman said .07" statement, may be a connection to last year.

We'll see.

ST | Oct 30, 2007 7:57:07 AM | #

Sadly you believe Lost moved slower than this. It took the first 2 episodes to show the hatch POVs and they were spread the second episode was about the raft. You people have no clue when you bash Lost how stupid you sound. It has flaws yes, but at least when they do show something twice it surprises you. Anyway it is 1000 times more interesting than seeing Claires character regress as are just about everyone else on this show. That said this episode was alright and a little better than any this year. Thank God for Jack Coleman

doeboi214 | Oct 30, 2007 8:00:18 AM | #

This is to all the He-man "Heroes" haters.

If heroes moved along quickly like everyone is whining about, then you would complain about them missing things. Dare I bring up that we aren't even a 1/4 through the season! I hope that the next 2 episodes go just as "slow" so that all of you that keep threatening to stop watching just go away!!

You are all right to not want this to be compared to Lost. Heroes is in a league of it's own. Aside from it's similarities to other shows, it takes on the life of it's own!! The more characters, the better chance for having more story line. (ie. the longer it has the chance to last)

I don't mind the build up! And if you were as interactive with Heroes as they would like you to be, you would find some answers on the web. I think the writers should keep up the pace. Just as last season, I know the true excitement is coming.

As for the Hiro hater, you really need to keep in mind that he is trying not to disrupt time and stay true to history. He doesn't want to change the stories. How would that go, "All of a sudden the sword smith disappeared!"?
I don't think you guys really think through your complaints. I think you should reserve some of that criticism for when you start writing your own TV dramas!

On another note, I must admit that Peter going in to the future kind of brings me back to last season. I hope that they are not creating a duplicate plot. I look forward to things taking a different turn. The idea that no matter what they do, the world is destined to turn out the same is a little disturbing.

Kisha | Oct 30, 2007 8:12:57 AM | #

LOST IS LAME. Talk about boring TV. Comparing it to Heroes brings down the show

| Oct 30, 2007 8:13:48 AM | #

As I recall Linderman said ".07%". That translated is still .07%. NYC does not hold 7% of the world's population!! So, added to the 93%, that only equals 93.07%.

Kisha | Oct 30, 2007 8:21:59 AM | #

Maybe the previous generation made the Shanti virus and created the corporation.

kristen | Oct 30, 2007 9:31:32 AM | #

Not bad tonight, at least we got to see what the main story line for the year will be, 'stopping the virus' and saving 93% of the world.

HRG returning to form was great also. Didn't care for Claire's story with West, one it was boring; "oh lets get the mean head cheerleader". Honestly why is the head cheerleader always such a Beyowtch? Since 'Heroes' is partially based on the X-men series of books, seems like West is definitely lining up with the 'Magneto' world view, " you have a power that makes you better than her".

Hiro what have you done? Part of the problem is last year, Peter, Claire, and Hiro were discovering their powers and learning about the secrets that exist in the 'Heroes Universe'; in that, they represented us the viewers as we learned what was going on also. This year that is gone and Peter, Claire and Hiro seem less; although Peter's amnesia seems to relate to many fans who have no clue what is going on.

Sylar hurry up and kill the wonder twins. The border patrol vigilantes; no agenda there.

jbw | Oct 30, 2007 9:35:12 AM | #

Like many of you, I'm completely underwhelmed so far. I hope the producers and writers are reading your comments and making necessary improvements.

*Tepid to Mild Spoilers about storylines ahead*

Bottom line: Season One bought a lot of goodwill with me, and I'm prepared to see where they're going. I know they're building a storyline, and most signs point to it starting to become clearer.

- The "4 months ago" episode is only a few weeks away which will fill in the rest of the blanks and get us grounded in the present. This'll be key in kicking off the main storyline I hope, and possibly a return to some good reveals/cliffhangers at the ends of the episodes.

- Hiro's storyline in the past is set to wrap up in the next couple of eps as well.

- HRG's got his paintings and is pretty keen on figuring out the message.

- Peter's got a connection to someone the company's hunting.

- Sylar's stateside now, so we should see that ramp up quickly enough.

My only real complaints are with Claire's and Monica's storylines, which seem like they're mostly filler.

I *love* the suggestion of Kensei being a Highlander-esque (bad guy who's road to evil began because of Hiro. I hope that's the case, I kinda miss Sark.

I'm happy to give this show a ton of room to grow, and I hope it pays off.

As an aside: I just don't see the point of debating someone's preference (Heroes vs Lost). Both good shows, wildly different subject matter/setting, what's to compare?

PS - Loved Kensei's line when he's stabbed by the guard "I knowwww.... Not very fair is it?"

Stan | Oct 30, 2007 10:01:15 AM | #

I've enjoyed the last few eps. of Heroes, including last night's. I agree that it has been slower this season and some characters aren't as exciting, but every episode can't be mind-blowing... let it build for a bit and see where it goes.

The dark painting off to the left (#2 in the series) was Claire lying on the steps broken after West dropped her in their attempt to freak out the mean cheerleader chick. So, that one's already happened as well. And I wonder if the next one (the hand holding the vile) was Bob giving Mohinder the virus to test on Monica?

Since I'm the one who first brought up Lost (apparently a bad idea), let me explain. I LOVE Lost, it's my favorite show on TV, and probably my second favorite show ever (nothing will ever beat Buffy.) I also love Heroes, probably my second favorite show on TV right now. Heroes is moving slowly right now, and a lot of people are complaining about that, but I have a ton of faith that the writers are gonna pull all these storylines together and turn it into something epic. I think the flashback episode that is coming up in a few weeks will really set things in motion, as we'll finally understand what is going on, and it will set the stage for the rest of the season.

My comparison to Lost was not that they are similar shows, but that Lost went through what many people considered a poor 2nd Season. Most people hated the introduction of new characters (the tailies), and thought the storyline was getting spread too thin. People forget because of how well Lost ended last season, but even after the fall "pod" of episodes, a LOT of people were abandoning Lost , and Entertainment Weekly did a cover story about Lost in which the writers acknowledged that fans were disappointed in the show and promised that it would get better. Pretty similar to what people are saying about Heroes now. If you like Lost more than Heroes, good for you; if you like Heroes more than Lost, good for you too. They are both great shows. I don't see the need for fans of either show to berate the other show, I was merely pointing out that Lost also hit a slump at one point.

Chris | Oct 30, 2007 10:36:40 AM | #

Also, one twist for the future. We assume that future 93% of the world is dead; is a result of the Company playing with the Shanti virus and it crossing over. Suresh lays out those bread crumbs quite nicely. However what new characters are all about diseases and people dying, the wonder twins. Might the thing that causes the 93% dead, come from the wonder twins or Sylar once he eats her brains.

jbw | Oct 30, 2007 10:46:04 AM | #

I actually enjoyed this episode quite a bit, (and have been enjoying the whole season). The only storyline I didn't like last night was Claire's. Their prank was over-the-top ridiculous, and I guess I'm just not all that interested in high school clichés.
And although most disagree, I find the Hiro storyline to be very entertaining. It's been really fun. Well, until Hiro decided to break history, and then Kenzai (sp?) turned on him.
I realized that even though Parkman's storyline is easily the most engaging so far, I didn't really miss it that much.

Finally, are the writers robbing a bit from themselves? We have a mysterious person we have yet to meet (ala Linderman) and another post-apocalyptic episode next week (although I do love me some post-apocalyptic goodness).

Billiam | Oct 30, 2007 11:06:42 AM | #

I'm giving this season one more hour of mine time then it's over. All the Story lines are weak. Most of the interesting characters are dead or out roaming around picking their nose somewhere. Clair and fly boy are not worth the time we're forced to spend with them. And will Nicky ever get her powers under control? It's seems like a re-run of last year with her. Also how lame and weak can they make Suresh act each week seems to be a challenge they are consistently rising to. And lets not even get started on those terrible Irish accents we were forced to listen to these past weeks. I was actually relieved when the bother ate it, his *accent* was like nails on a chalk board. Hope the sister is next.

Here's the summary of next episode (spoilers, but just ones that NBC released):

Peter and Caitlin learn about the endstage affects of the Heroes virus. Many of the Heroes work together to fight the nightmare-man. West meets HRG. Hiro and Kensei's journey comes to a head.

Sounds pretty sweet and important. I'm guessing its effect will be on the level of last year's "Homecoming" and like last year, will be followed by a flash back episode (which I'm not less excited about, but we will see).

Glad to see some stuff fall in place this time around. My guess is that Hiro, by changing history, has created the one who is killing all the old company people.

Heroes v Lost? Both enjoyable, both involve multiple character paths & timelines to follow. nuff said

Was I the only one that got the "Lines" title? I took it to mean the line you cross over, or refuse to cross over. I think every story had a line that was crossed (or not).

HRG - very obviously crossed the line in murdering the Russian. Same with Maya - murdering the guards for her own benefit.

You can argue that both Claire and Hiro crossed the line, putting themselves and those around them in danger by using their powers for their own benefit.

Kensei crossed over the line from Hero to Villian.

Mohinder and Alejandro both refused to cross the line, and stood up for what they believed in - Mohinder to greater effect than Alejandro.

I can't think of a line Peter crossed, unless you want to say that he crossed from being passive about his past, to actually embracing it and looking for answers.

I'm enjoying this years Heroes. I think the idea of the Generations is interesting, and forces you to think - obviously something happened with the older generation to make them believe they needed to allow the bomb to go off last year. What was it? Is it something similar that will divide our Heroes generation (Peter, Hiro, etc) onto one side (belief) or the other. What does that mean for the younger generation? (Micah & Monica)

Sylar's story needs to go slow because him getting his powers back too soon is not believable. We know something is trying to come back in him, we saw the roach last time and heard the clock noises again when he as in the car. I don't see the need for Claire this season, last season she may have been the star, "save the cheerleader.." and Sylar having got her power showed how important it was to not have him kill her. HRG seems to be the only tie in to the other heroes. Parkman, I'm glad didn't die last season and is having a strong story line. Monica is a new Peter story. Look at me I'm meant to be special and embrace my powers. Peter needs to help that irish chick find her pot of gold and let her go. Bring Hiro back, I miss the Hiro/Ando combo and what's with people not being able to control their powers. Micah can control his, but Hiro has a hard time. Parkman adjusted to his power and Molly never had trouble, or West as well.

I love shows that make you go "what the heck?", but only when I'm comfortable there's going to be a payoff in the end. Lost used to have that, but it's gone too far into left field since the end of Season 2. Heroes, however, I have great faith in, and each new log on the bonfire of the various plotlines makes me giddy; I can't wait to see Hiro battle Kensei, I want to know everything about this virus and it's impact on the world; I want to know who the Elder Heroes are and why they're being targeted, and I can't wait for the episode that shows what brought Peter from exploding in the sky to working with this mysterious Adam.

My only regret is that it seems HRG is going to die at the end of the season a la' Isaac Mendez. The fact that they are making him less sympathetic again is strong evidence, and the fact that Claire is kissing her boyfriend over his dead body, after what looks like being shot by Mohinder, looks like he turned against her or the Heroes entirely.

What I've been finding interesting this year is how, even with amnesia Peter's ability to use his 'aquired' powers has become instinctive. Last season he still had to concentrate somewhat in order to control them. Which if you think about it is a clue on how he spent those missing 4 months

Yet another week, yet another comment by somebody who expects all young girls/women to look like scarecrows with tits. Hayden Panetierre is a fine example of womanhood, and while I agree she might not have the physique of the typical California-style cheerleader, most of the girls I've seen in Midwest high schools don't either. Girls like Hayden are what the ideal of females in Hollywood SHOULD be, not the concentration camp survivor clones that clutter up the airwaves on too many other shows nowadays. As for the episode, this was the first that I did not stay completely riveted on since the pilot. I drifted here and there because the plotlines are starting to get a little trite, dull and redundant. While I do prefer to see HRG back to his normal bad-ass self (the notion of having the Haitian steal the Russian guy's memories of his deceased daughter was actually very terrifying), the character has been all over the map this season. Unlike some, I'm not going to do the "one-more-ep-and-I'm-out" routine, but I do hope the writers start making tighter episodes. The season has been a mushy mess thus far. Oh, and I do wonder why anyone would compare a show like this with "Lost" anyway. While the nimrods who consider themselves "experts" (like over at TV Guide.com) like to lump the two shows together, they're really not of the same genre at all. Anyway, I still like the show, still think Hayden Panetierre is uber-fine and will continue with the show until it reaches its end. That's called loyalty. Kinda like those who still root for the Chicago Cubs.

LOST sucks!!

I guess that is why I never watched it after a few episodes. So my advice to all the LOST fans just wait for LOST to return and Stop posting on HEROES show recaps. I've never posted on LOST recaps because I don' t care about LOST.

JL great point about all the love storylines. I'm glad I'm not the only one not buy it. I know last season some wanted each of those characters to have a love interest. It's just hard to believe (except for the Claire/West) they all would fall in love so fast.

How do the "Series of 8" paintings relate to any of the storylines? Meaning, what was the purpose of needing to find them? I forgot what the first painting showed. I understand that HRG/Noah wanted to find all of them once the last painting showed him dead, but why did he need to find any of them to begin with? Was it ever mentioned?

gus | Oct 30, 2007 1:08:40 PM | #

Wait, I now remember the first one showed Kaito dead. I thought the 8 paintings would depict the deaths of the ElderHeroes, but one of them shows Claire dead on the steps. So what's the whole point in showing Claire dead in one of the paintings? Why were these 8 paintings even hidden? How did The Company know these paintings were connected anyways? This whole plot sucks now.

gus | Oct 30, 2007 1:15:20 PM | #

HRG believes the "Series of 8" would reveal who/why/where he was going to be shot. Talk about a self-centered character. I guess it's now tied between Sylar, Matt and HRG. Obliviously the twist was it shows a whole bunch of things. I believe it was Eden that told HRG that Issac's Painting is not a “Magic 8 Balls” or something like that. They can only show what could happen in the future or has happened.

I thought that Alejandro understood some English and if not wasn’t his sister near enough to over hear when Sylar was speaking to Alejandro.

The Good Guys are good, the Bad Guys are bad, and the ones you don't know about are doing both. Okay, so now we're completely confused. Perhaps this is the way Tim Kring and the writers wanted it.

I tell you what, though -- any more season-ending cliffhangers with a Deus Ex Machina solution and I'm turning my TV off on Monday nights. Chuck is already wearing thin and Journeyman is looking more and more like Early Edition with tachyons.

i guess i'm the only one who appreciates the show... btw, heroes is so much better than lost.. That's why i see so much promotion for heroes over lost. Btw, where is that show? I thought it would premiere in nov. wow. Look lost fans, stick with your show and you stick with yours

Heroes is slow these last few weeks, but im not surprised. ITs not sweeps. Tonight it is, so watch out.

Besides look at the character developments and underlying themes. In lost, they were all connected but they try to make it look realistic. This is a show about superheroes, so of course it stretches reality.... If you wanna give up on Heroes. Go ahead. Just don't come here and berate a show that some of us love still.
