'Ghost Whisperer': Bloody Mary - It's the urban myth, not the drink

By Kiley McMichael

October 05, 06:58 PM

Jenniferlovehewitt4_ghostwhisperer_ It's a classic kind of Ghost Whisperer episode tonight, with a good creepy storyline, and several good buttinski Melinda moments. Ah, October is here.

Melinda, luckily for me, opens the episode with a nice recap of last week. She remarks that she needs to track her father down, and she also mentions the angry City Hall Archive Ghost, who warned her of the spirits down below, coming to get her. While it's a nice recap, nothing much from last week is featured in this episode, so the spoilers start here…

We cut to a girl in a dorm bathroom at the university, scared of her reflection in the mirror. She starts screaming. Jim is the paramedic on the call, and the girl, Allison, has slipped into a catatonic state, nearly scared to death. The last thing she was heard yelling was "Bloody Mary."

Melinda goes to Rick to find out more about Bloody Mary, who tells her that Bloody Mary myths are all over the Internet. He also mentions RUbloodymary.com, and an adaptation of the myth says that when you see Bloody Mary, you go into a state of catatonia, where Bloody Mary drives you mad for three days, until you die on the fourth day.

Melinda goes back to the hospital to talk Allison's friends, Jenna and Sloane. They say they weren't there when Allison collapsed, and they don't know what happened, specifically, but Jenna says that Alison "heard the noise." During their talk, Melinda sees a ghostly apparition in the reflective surfaces.

Rick comes in again to elaborate on the Rockland U version of Bloody Mary, which is tied to a Grandview version. "Mary" lived in town 150 years ago. She fell ill, and was declared dead. However, when she was buried, a string was attached to her hand, trailing up to the surface, and finally attached to a bell. Mary's parents, so grief-stricken at the death of their child, got too drunk that night to listen for the bell. But, of course, the next morning, Mary's bell is found on the ground. When they dig her up, she's truly dead, with scratch marks all over the lid of the coffin.

We cut to Jenna, Alison's friend who mentioned the "noise," waiting for an elevator. Just before the elevator doors close, she hears a bell, and looks up to see her own reflection, with a ghostly image behind her. She starts screaming. As she is sent off to the hospital, Rick and Melinda inspect the elevator, discussing the fact that the common thread throughout mirrors running through all version of the myth.

Melinda sets up a bunch of mirrors, and then calls Bloody Mary herself. She sees an apparition, but is interrupted by Delia. She runs upstairs and calls up RUBloodyMary.com. She does some quick checking on the victims' websites, and finds a webcam on Sloane's page. While watching the site, she sees the apparition cross in front of the screen. Proving once and for all that absolutely everyone is on the Internet.

Jenniferlovehewitt_ghostwhisperer_c She pays a visit to Sloane, and reveals that she can see ghosts. Melinda tells her that together, they can stop the haunting. Sloane scoffs at Melinda, telling her that it's all true, and mentions a girl named Rachel, one of Jenna's roommates, who died from seeing Bloody Mary. We flash to a scene with Rachel turning in front of a mirror saying Bloody Mary. Bloody hands come out of the darkness behind her, and a glass she's holding shatters in her hand as a little bell starts ringing. Sloane says that Rachel was in a coma for three days, and then died on the fourth day. Sloane is sure that she is next, and won't allow Melinda to help. Melinda leaves, and as she walks down the hall, we see the reflection of an eye on the doorknob, watching both Melinda, and Sloane, left alone in her room.

Melinda goes back to the City Hall, to look up anything having to do with Bloody Mary. The angry archive ghost comes back, and tells her that that while Mary is real, the myth, of course, has been warped. He says the doctor who pronounced Mary dead was her own father. And the parents didn't get drunk, but the father, fearing for his wife's own health and sanity, carried her from Mary's grave with the help of some morphine. When the doctor returned the next morning to the bell on the ground, he dug Mary up only to find her fingers bloodied, and her fingernails buried deep in the lid of the casket. Interesting detail!

Melinda goes to the cemetery, trying to reach Mary. She gets a call from Rick, who tells her how to get into Mary's old house. After turning in front of a mirror, she hears a tinny bell ringing, and a bloody hand reaches through, out to her. The spirit screams, shattering the mirror. Melinda tells Jim what happens, but, ever the detail freak, she says that the hand had all it's fingernails, and that the bell just didn't sound right. She believes that the ghost is Rachel, back to exact revenge on the other girls.

In a the usual gutsy Melinda move, she confronts Rachel's parents. I love Melinda's connections. She knows how to get a hold of everyone. They tell her that Rachel had a hard time making friends, and that she had a bad heart. She wore a heart monitor, in fact, that had an alarm – a pinging bell. She goes back to Sloane, and forces her to talk more about Rachel. Sloane reveals that she was the girl coming out of the darkness who scared Rachel, technically, to death. Nothing like dying of fear just to impress a bunch of girls. Melinda listens to Rachel talk about the freedom she has now that she's dead. With the help of her parents, Melinda helps Rachel let go, and cross over. Allison and Jenna wake up in the hospital.

But the last moment of the show remind us that the real Mary isn't at peace yet. Always another ghost to help.

Final Thoughts:
- I'm liking the cross-promotion of Internet sites. Last week we had "And Shame the Devil," now Bloody Mary. I venture to guess Snopes is getting some hits too.

- Nice Gothic feel to this episode, and it was nice to have a story that wasn't all about Melinda's father and the major plots.
- As a British literature and history major, I'm always glad to have a new interpretation of the Bloody Mary myth. But I wish Payne would have brought up who the original Bloody Mary was. Alas, alack.

Comments

It's wasn't scary at all but it was great non the less, as you said yourself it's always nice to see a new twist to an old tale. The serial aspect of the new season is really holding up well, defiantly glad the writers/producers have decided to go this route. Also the ghost that appeared at the end, was that really Rachel???

Last note, it's nice not having the "My names Melinda, I just got married..." thing IMO it was always wasted secs to having much more Ghost Whisperer :p.

The 4 days cycle reminded me too much of The Ring's 7 day cycle.

Someone on IMDB pointed out the elevator scene was very similar to something in The Grudge.

Overall I thought the episode was okay, but I just wish they would've talked a little more about the actual Bloody Mary.

Zzzzzzzz....

Delia got as much screentime in this episode as I'd like to see of her in one season, a few seconds. Same goes for Jim as well. Both are boring, and I could careless if both suddenly died on the show.

We all know both their deaths would pass as easily as Andrea's, which Melina has seemed to forget as if it were nothing.

Jess | Oct 6, 2007 7:28:13 AM | #

I will most definately stop watching this show if Jim is killed off. He is my favorite character. What is wrong or boring with having a loving and supportive husband? Jess, what do you want Melinda to do, mention Andrea every few minutes?

TrupenI | Oct 6, 2007 10:58:08 AM | #

Like I said last week I like Jim and Delia so I really don't like to hear people giving them a death wish. I would prefer that they got more screen time than the professor, but I like him too. Give all the supporting characters a chance. We all know this is Melinda's story, remember she told us that every week for the first two years, but she does need the support of those she cares about.

Remember when Ghost Whisperer can on the air? It was suppose to be this more family-friendly version of Medium. It was meant to be based on resolving "loose ends" left for living relatives and be this very cheery, happy, bland show.

It's amusing to see how much the show has veered away from these conventions and decided to make it into a cheap little horror show like the ones that debut at the cinemas on a weekly basis. And, for some reason, these episodes still feel like they're following a template. Melinda sees a ghost, the ghost haunts her, she reaches out to the ghost, the ghost gives Melinda a mission, Melinda tracks down family and/or friends, Melinda communicate between the ghost, everybody weeps, everybody laughs, The End!

Don't get me wrong, I really don't think that the show has gotten worse. After all, the show features one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood Jennifer Love Hewitt. When she isn't showing the normally-mandated cleavage shots on screen, all she can do is giggle and act at the same level as she did in her teenage horror films. It's hilarious to listen to Hewitt, one moment she'll be commenting on how her boobs have a career of their own (a point which is gaining more relevance with each showing of Breast... Ghost Whisperer). The next moment, you'll read how she bothered that people only likes her for her boobs and insists she should be taken seriously as an actress. Sure, the world needs more of her masterful acting as seen in the Tuxedo and those crop of TV movies.

It was so bad at the beginning it's an amazement for how it survived two seasons. Breast.... I mean Ghost Whisperer should have been cancelled by now. By looking at recent ratings, all the show might be is a whisper come next spring.

I will never expect Ghost Whisperer to get the ratings of Gray's Anatomy or C.S.I. so I don't think it's in danger of being cancelled.

You know? Normally I don't watch G. W. but the morning of the Mary episode I not only watched it that night, I also taped it! It was creepy,
and the back story about the bell and the girl being scared to death was at least original. the episode was definitely an attention generating story. IF anyone wants to see a 10Times SCARIER version of the Bloody Mary story, try to get hold of the Bloody Mary episode from the tv show, SUPERNATURAL! NOW THAT WAS A VERY "Scare you to death" episode!!! (one comic spoiler--I'll mention is that in the episode Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared P) accidently break a mirror when they are trying to get into the locked up for the night shop where the Family mirror of Mary's is stored to be sold. And as the search begins for the Mary's mirror Dean turns to Sam and asks: "okay broken mirror, is that My 7 years bad luck, or yours?" Definitely a chilling horrific episode (get a load of Mary craawling from the mirror as Samara crawled from the tv in The Ring)--isn't Stop-ani-motion fantastic for atmosphere??? :)

How funny, the second comment, left by Jess, criticized Melinda for letting Andrea's death pass easily as if it were nothing. Does Jess realize the show is called Ghost Whisperer and that Melinda has been dealing with death her whole life, or is Jess simply retarded? LMAO! Jess I'm sure Melinda has learned how to get over grieving for loved ones by this time. I mean she's had this gift since she was a child after all. Don't be such an idiot.

The term "Bloody Mary" actually derives from Mary Queen of Scotts who loved to behead her subjects. So much so that she earned the nick name Bloody Mary.
The story about the 'dead ringer' though is correct. I knew a person that ran a casket making company locally and he had, long ago, had requests for a casket that was made with a snorkel like tube than ran to the surface to provide air and it had a bell with the cord on it so they could ring it.
I love studying where all of these old terms and sayings came from.
