A head-scratchin' 'Prison Break'

By Daniel Fienberg

October 22, 07:03 PM

Williamfichtner2_prisonbreak_s3_240They're going backwards on Prison Break. Returning on Monday (Oct. 22) after one week-long baseball hiatus and before a second week-long baseball hiatus, Prison Break delivered a placeholder episode that saw Michael make no progress at all in his escape aspirations, but sure left viewers with plenty of questions.

[Spoilers... They're coming... Watch out or they'll get ya!]

Monday's episode was utterly baffling to me. Nothing happened and almost no information was given, but I've at least a half-dozen questions that won't be answered until the two-hour Prison Break event in two weeks (if then). The only real purpose to the episode was to regenerate bafflement amongst fans who might have been wavering after Dr. Tancredi's untimely decapitation.

So here's what we're wondering (and feel free to venture your guesses):

1) Mahone, Michael and Whistler had a "Eureka!" moment as they watched a guard deposit his coffee cup on the ground. They all had the exact same thought at the exact same moment like it was the most obvious thing in the world. Ummm... Why don't I get it? Is the point just that the guard has a routine they can exploit? That they can poison him or something? Why am I not as impressed as they were? "If we get to that cup, we get to the man," somebody said. Well sure. Have at it. This strategy is taken from the Underpants Gnomes School of Business ("Step 1: Collect underpants. Step 2:... Step 3: Profit!").

Danaygarcia2_prisonbreak_s3_2402) Lincoln spent a long time digging on the beach. Despite all that digging, he only created a hole deep enough to insert a small cooler. He flashed the cooler's contents to Whistler's girlfriend who only speaks English phonetically and said that it was their get-away vehicle. She looked shocked. So what was in the cooler? And why is Lincoln such a pathetic digger? And why did he barely cover the hole? And who buries anything at the waterline? And why is Sofia so useless and lazy?

3) What was Whistler doing in Nice in 1997 with the ambassador? And which ambassador? And why did the new inmate call Whistler "McFadyen"? Is that the biggest coincidence in the history of the world or was it all part of some elaborate plan?

4) Who are the folks in the black SUV? What are they asking Sucre to smuggle in? And in what absurd universe would you have to pay a prison gravedigger in a third-world country $5000 to smuggle something into prison anyway?

5) At what point is the stuff with Lechero's contact on the outside and the Hooker Nun going to dovetail with the season's main plot? And should the writers be concerned that the Hooker Nun is the show's most sympathetic character now that Sara's head is in a box? And, actually, what did Linc do with Sara's head anyway? And what was up with the notes Susan B. Anthony was taking in her morning phone call with Linc?

6) Why was Haywire only a one-week hallucination for Mahone? And will Michael be visited by the ghost of the rat he set up to get killed by the Sona guards? He should have a ghost-rat friend, just like the Jesus Figure in The Green Mile.

Other quick thoughts from this week's episode:

  • Line of the episode: "There's a bad joke about Sara somewhere in there." [Susan B. Anthony after making a crack about Linc and Michael being in over their heads.]
  • Second best line of the episode: "In this world, sister, we are all prostitutes. You are a queen." [T-Bag, reassuring the Hooker Nun about her place in society. He's creepy, that T-Bag, particularly with his new Greaser haircut. Chronologically, I think we're less than three weeks since he bleached his hair last season. What's up with that?]
  • Third best line of the episode: "This is why my friends don't visit Panama." [Sofia, to the intrusive police guarding Sona's perimeter.]
  • Is Bellick suddenly wearing Zubaz? Nice.

So, what were your thoughts on this week's episode?

Are they trying to develop a romance between Linc and Sofia? Did he bury Sara's head (I know that makes no sense, but not a whole lot does right now)? And why didn't he bring a shovel? I am pretty sure they want to poison the guard, but like you, I don't see how. Haywire is no longer in the picture because Mahone is getting high.

I don't know what to make of PB any more, and frankly I think I'm watching out of sheer habit. I'm not even sure exactly what happened in the latest episode. DID anything happen? The "storylines" seemed to have no point whatsoever. PB went from an intruiging drama to an over the top curiosity -- but it was still enjoyable on that level. Now the show seems to be spiralling out of control, as if the writers themselves are simply making crap up as they go along, with no real idea of how to resolve their story. I guess I'll watch to see if the show simply implodes upon itself.
At least the Star Trek Enterprise (Dominic Keating) guy is getting work; he had a small part on "Heroes" tonight as well.

Despite the negative review and or negative comments, I thought the show was good. I can't wait for the 2 Hour Broadcast in 2 Weeks.

My sister loves it this year, she asked me what I thought about it. I said I wasn't sure because I'm not sure what's going on. I too noticed that Dominic Keating was on "Heroes" last night. By the way, I think they are getting out of control on Heroes as well, too many people to keep track of and they are all over the place.

I delete this show every week from my TiVO without even watching. I can't even bring myself to watch. The moment Michael went BACK into prison on the Season 2 finale, I was officially finished with the show. Bye, Wentworth and your eyes. I'll miss your eyes the most. Sigh.

For the last 4 weeks I have Tivo'd this show and watch it in 10 minutes. They need to get out of prison soon. This is so boring this season. Who cares what Linc buried in the sand, that the tide is going to carry away?

I for one can't wait to see how Michael engineers a prison escape around a discarded paper cup. Maybe there's an inflatable raft in the cooler but it would need a motor to get away from guards shooting at them.

its gonna be interesting, but why is there a 2 hour show following the off week? are they cancelling the show or something? on the preview of the show, it said something about being the end. the episode wasn't that great though overall, and i agree that nothing really happened

enough already, the writers are all nuts! they are destroying wat they hv created. stupid assholes!

I have same thought with OG, the first 2 seasons were great because i think the story was already written and finished even before filming it. it was well thought

i think the 3rd season got botched because of storyline changes because of MiSa plus they are just trying to stretch the story which should have finished already in just 2 seasons.

i think this will turnout like smallville, interesting at 1st then got boring.

I am not quite sure what to make of last night's episode. Why was whistler and mahone with the evil woman? And where are they all going together? I'm not quite sure that sarah is even dead. The picture of her head was not that convincing. I'm thinking that michael will go looking for whistler and find sarah somewhere alive. Maybe it is just wishful thinking or maybe they left us completely confused for a reason. If anyone has a clue regarding the last episode I would love to hear about it.
