'Gossip Girl' invites us to brunch

Leightonmeester_gossipgirl_240 That Gossip Girl is such a tease. If there's not going to be any sex or drinking in an episode, I need something. And if there's talk of brunch, I expect to see a lot more eating going on.

Spoilers served up in a salmon mousse with a bit of beluga caviar on top.

The whole episode revolved around the few lazy hours before and during a huge-ass brunch that Chuck's dad, Bart Bass, was throwing for his foundation. Apparently, it's yet another chance to see and be seen, especially in odd attire that's in between classic and eccentric.

Chuck was rockin' the gold bow tie with his white suit, but Blair took the cake. Her white eyelet lace dress with bell sleeves was very pretty, but what was with the gift bow in her hair? She obviously hasn't heard Coco Chanel's rule for accessorizing.

But I get ahead of myself. Before BrunchGate, we see the Humphreys trying to deal with Last Night. Jenny is worried about what Chuck would say about her and thus seeks out Blair for guidance. Dan is kicking his own butt for his lame wave goodbye to Serena. The golden girl isn't doing well either once she confronts Blair and realizes her BFF (former by now) knows about her buffing the barstool with Nate. Oops.

Penn Somehow, Dan and Serena end up at the brunch and it's on like Grey Poupon (which, by the way, is great with a salty ham). Through accident and machinations, Nate, S and B end up in Chuck's private suite and then troop down to the dining room for less privacy foer their spat. There, Chuck and Dan join them. In the end, Dan pushes Chuck into a food display (Chuck's Injury Count: 3) and leaves his dream girl behind once he finds out about her cheating ways.

THE GOOD

- All kidding aside, I'm enjoying Blair's retro-Victorian look. It's odd, but kind of works for her -- that veneer of innocence and respectability. We all know the Victorian Age hid some really nasty proclivities.
- Dan and Jenny's sibling interaction is pretty cute and heartwarming. Too bad Jenny is too stupid to listen to her brother.
- Dan: "I live in Brooklyn. It's not the Ozarks. No offense to the Ozarks."
- Chuck is just so deliciously smarmy. The two women he took to bed are his employees, so it's natural that they should get him coffee the morning after.
- Dan had a Cabbage Patch Kid named Cedric? Ah, that's blackmail fodder right there.

THE BAD

- What was that nasty green shake Chuck was making? And what did he add to it with a dropper?
- Ooh, don't you just want to suckerpunch Dexter, that snooty concierge at The Palace?
- Jenny: "Nice flowers." Blair: "They're hydrangeas." Okay, I know this is supposed to symbolize Jenny's conversion to the dark side when she buys hydrangeas at the end of the episode, but that was an asinine exchange.
- The parents are killing me. Who cares?
Nanzhang_gossipgirl_240  - Kati and Isabel need real personalities and fashion sense. As it stands, they remind me of Cinderella's stepsisters, Anastasia and Drusilla.
- Serena is waaaay melodramatic throwing away her phone because of the sad memories associated with it. At least donate it to needy Jenny before going out and buying an iPhone. Sheesh. How wasteful.

Was this the best brunch ever? Who do you still love?

I loved the episode, so intense and entertaining

I also love Dan

I love the drama and appreciate the fact that Serena and Dan didn't get back together at the end. Dan needs a reality check...he put her up on a pedastal and when he finds out she's human, ditches her? Lame.

I'm loving Gossip Girl so far, but I have to agree that the parents are lame characters.

By my count, I think that Blair has worn 3 "gift bows" in her hair up to this point. I think it will be her signature style, just like Chuck loves his scarf.

I still love Dan and Blair, and I think they would be an interesting couple in the future. ;-) Serena and Nate seem pretty boring, so maybe they deserve each other!

I also hated that Serena threw away her phone at the end. I know that she's wealthy and can afford a new phone, but as you said there are charities that collect old cell phones for abused women shelters!:-(

I have been loving GG so far, but I agree that the parents are annoying characters. However, I still love Dan and Blair, and I kind of hope that they might be a couple in the future. Serena and Nate are so boring, maybe they do deserve each other after all! ;-)

By my count, Blair has worn three "gift bows" in her hair. I think it will be her signature style, just like Chuck's lovely scarf.

I also noted that Serena wasted her cell phone when she just threw it out. If she really is trying to become a better person, she could have donated that phone to a charity that collects for abused women's shelters. :-(

can someone please tell me who plays bart bass...chucks dad?? its KILLING ME

Seriously, do people really dress like that? I found the upper crust fashions to be trying very hard. Chuck's dad must have borrowed that jacket from Capt. Kangaroo.

I do agree with Jade, Dan should have gotten over himself. Serena didn't cheat on him, and it's painfully clear, since we've been hit by the anvil that Serena is "reformed", and is now less inclined to behave so wickedly.

In fact, this show is feeling like the OC crossed with Star Wars. Blair and Chuck are the Sith, Dan is Han, and Jenny is the impressionable Skywalker choosing between the dark and light side.

Go Dan. All I have to say.

Can we please not judge a whole episode because she threw away the cell phone. You guys are being pretty petty with that argument. It was symbolic, that is what writers for shows do. They tie in cheesy songs and actions that evoke emotions. The show was great and if the one thing you can find wrong is that she didn't donate her cell phone to a battered women's shelter....well then there is no use arguing. Lame.

Ratings for last night's episode are in, and they were bad. 2.55 million viewers. That's a loss of 950,000 viewers from last week. Don't get too attached to this show.

It's on The CW for lack of better or worse so I doubt a 2.5 will make them decide to axe GG after all VM never broke the 3mill mark when it was on UPN and it lasted 2 seasons, with the same President.

Anyways it was also against 2 highly anticipated shows ABC's PP and NBC's BW.

I agree to a certain extent with Jeffrey as I think the CW would have expected the audience to shrink this week as it was up against the premiere episodes (either season or pilot) of 3 shows this week. I think after another 2-3 weeks we'll have a better feel for where GG is in terms of viewership. I'm not sure if there is an encore this week on Sun. or not but if there is that will help with the people who perhaps watched one of the other shows and perhaps even DVR'd another.

I'll say this though, it's never a good thing to lose 1/4 of your audience from week 1 to 2.

I'm just glad I don't have to choose b/w those 4 shows (it is on Tues. at 7pm where I'm at).
