'WWE RAW' Feb. 24 recap: The Undertaker and Hulk Hogan return
Previously on: "Elimination Chamber" put the "Wrestlemania XXX" building blocks in place. Randy Orton vs. Batista, Daniel Bryan vs. someone and John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt.
The big news: The Undertaker has returned to "WWE RAW" and all is well in the professional wrestling kingdom. It was expected that Undertaker would return Monday (Feb. 24), and WWE wisely held off until the main event for him to make his appearance.
As has been rumored, it's going to be Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar. This came after Paul Heyman complained in the ring that Lesnar wasn't getting the respect he deserved and should be considered the No. 1 contender to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Heyman said Lesnar didn't want just any match but wanted to make history. Suddenly the gong hit and it was on.
Lesnar and Undertaker have fought before, back when Taker was a biker, and always had good matches. Seeing them go at "Wrestlemania" should be a sight to behold. Lesnar didn't say a word but his facial expressions were well-played. He showed the proper fear, but also the brashness he's known for. Undertaker signed the match contract by stabbing Brock's hand with a pen, then chokeslamming him through a table. Welcome back, Taker. You were missed.
Hulk Hogan's return to WWE was less notable. It was nice to see him back, and the crowd ate it up, but as he's a host who can't wrestle, there just wasn't much for him to say. Hogan opened the show with a promo that was more of less a WWE Network commercial and left, never to be seen again.
Batista and Alberto Del Rio had another match, but this time Orton caused a distraction so Del Rio could win. After the match, Randy pointed out all the boos Batista got, which of course led to more boos. Batista said he was fine with it. The crowd isn't, though. If this match goes in the main event slot at "Wrestlemania," the crowd might throw garbage at the ring.
That's especially true since WWE is indeed going forward with Daniel Bryan vs. Triple H. Bryan beat Kane, called Triple H a coward and challenged him. It should be a great match, and Bryan should most definitely win, but it seems like working him into the title match would be a much smarter idea.
As for Cena, he called out The Wyatt Family and they answered in kind, beating him down in the ring. Later, during Roman Reigns vs. Bray Wyatt, both sides got involved, before Dean Ambrose caused a disqualification.
Odds and ends:
- No Cody Rhodes and Goldust, which is unfortunate.
- The Usos were smart enough to superkick Road Dogg during his mic spiel.
- Jack Swagger just can't catch a break. At some point, the Real Americans will have to dump him.
- The crowd loved Hogan, but he needs a bit more substance next time.
- There were CM Punk chants throughout the night.
- Other than Hogan, Undertaker, Punk and Bryan, the crowd didn't care about big chunks of the show
- Alberto Del Rio beat Batista
- Big E. beat Cesaro by disqualification
- Sheamus beat Christian
- Daniel Bryan beat Kane
- Emma beat Summer Rae
- The Usos beat The New Age Outlaws
- Bray Wyatt beat Roman Reigns by disqualification
