'The Vampire Diaries' 100th episode: Candice Accola teases the big Klaroline reunion and more
"The Vampire Diaries" fans are a loyal and vocal bunch (and proud of it!). And one very loyal and vocal subset group of those fans know they have something big to look forward to in the 100th episode airing this Thursday (Jan. 23): Klaroline reuniting.
Klaus and Caroline shippers have been waiting for these two to share the screen again ever since Joseph Morgan left to star on his own spinoff series, "The Originals." While Klaroline fans don't know exactly what's going to happen when Klaus makes his way back to Mystic Falls, they do know that whatever happens is going to be a game-changer.
"It's interesting how their relationship built over the past couple of seasons, because it's almost like she hated him so much that she didn't know if she wanted to just grab him by the throat and throw him through a door, or just like kiss him," Accola says. "I think that was the awesome tension that the fans really loved about their chemistry, because you just couldn't tell -- is she gonna smack him or throw her arms around him?"
While we are under strict orders from The CW not to reveal a single thing about their encounter, we did wonder if this will open the door for Caroline to make her way down to New Orleans for a crossover on "The Originals."
"I personally would love to go to New Orleans but I don't know if that's in the cards," Accola says. "I have no idea. I think there's a lot going on in New Orleans without me heading down there to complicate things."
So how does Accola feel about the Klaroline reunion? "Honestly, I'm happy as long as the character is always evolving. As soon as she gets confident in herself, I hope she falls down and hits herself hard and has to get back up again," Accola says. "What I love about Caroline is that her experiences and what she goes through are very human -- her insecurities and how she gives her opinion when it's not asked and how she sometimes does things without thinking about them and how she's had to learn to take responsibility for her actions."
She continues, "As far as her relationships go, I think as long as she's learning and growing or hurting, as long as she's evolving in some sort of way emotionally, then I'm open to it because I love working with all those boys. At this point I feel like everybody's made out with each other."
One relationship that fans would love to see grow even more is the friendship between Caroline and Stefan. "I really love the friendship that has grown between them," Accola says. "I think that whoever is enjoying the Caroline and Stefan scenes, there will be a lot more of them this season."
Accola promises that if you've ever been a fan of "The Vampire Diaries," then the 100th episode is for you, no matter who you 'ship.
"The writers were really excited about this episode," Accola says. "I know [executive producers] Julie [Plec] and Caroline [Dries] have done so much to make this episode special, not just for everyone behind the scenes, as it has been, but for the viewers especially. I think that they're really going to appreciate the 100th episode. A lot of heart went into it and I think that they really wanted to celebrate the fans with this episode."
Making it to 100 episodes is a rare thing for a series to achieve, and Accola was excited for the wrap party later that weekend. "Celebrating 100 episodes is so special. It's a very, very special night," Accola says. "Not only are the actors here but the producers are here, the writers are here, and all the executives are here and the crew is here. That's what makes it so great."
While she couldn't reveal much about the 100th episode, Accola did tease that Katherine's fight for survival now that she's dying of old age will give fans an interesting look at the life of Katerina Petrova.
"We're really going to have an opportunity to understand Katherine in a new light," Accola says. "It's a really great look at this character, because if you really look at it, she's the root that started this whole thing. The only reason Stefan stopped in Mystic Falls was because he thought he saw Katherine, the only reason Damon returned to Mystic Falls was because he was looking for Katherine, the only reason Caroline is a vampire is because of Katherine, the only reason Damon and Stefan ever became vampires was because of Katherine, so she's kind of the root."
She continues, "And Elena is her doppelganger, so it kind of all brings it together. We're really going to get to know the root of this group in a new light, and we're going to learn more about her, and what she's going through as a human."
There is one scene in particular near the end of the episode that features all of the cast -- a rarity when working on a show with a cast as large as "TVD" -- and Accola couldn't wait to film it.
"I brought my camera to work today," Accola says with a laugh. "I'm really excited, it's a great day, it's a great weekend, we're all celebrating. This has been my first television series that I've ever worked on and the fact that I've been fortunate enough to be part of a series that goes to 100 episodes, because a lot don't, and that is an accomplishment for us all."
Accola is happy that she can celebrate with her fellow cast members who have become like a family over the past five years. "We were all young and at different places in our lives when we started this series," Accola says. "We've all seen each other at 6 in the morning when we're waking up or 6 a.m. when we're going to bed. We all know each other's annoyances, we know how to bug each other, we know what someone will be bugged by, what someone won't be bugged by, we know what each other eats, what we each other likes, don't likes, we already know if someone walks into the room to turn the air up because they're going to get cold, or we have to turn it down."
She continues, "It's weird because we didn't necessarily choose to work together. We get hired for a job, we're placed in a city that we never chose to necessarily live in, and we're here as long as the show is successful, so the family that's been built and the roots that have been planted and the connections that we've all made, we'll all know each other forever and we'll always have this time together."
"The Vampire Diaries" 100th episode airs Thursday (Jan. 23) at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
