HBO picks up 'The Newsroom' Season 3, says it's the last one
Operation Genoa evidently didn't derail Atlantis Cable News entirely.
HBO finally confirmed Monday (Jan. 13) what Emmy winner Jeff Daniels signaled in a tweet several months ago: The Aaron Sorkin-created TV-news drama "The Newsroom" will get a third season, though it also will be the final one. It's expected to begin its run this fall.
Cast members clearly were hoping for the renewal. "This is rich ground, and there's a lot of stuff to get into," co-star Sam Waterston -- alias ACN president Charlie Skinner -- told Zap2it earlier. "These circumstances are rare, so I hope and long for a third season."
Thomas Sadoski, who plays news producer Don Keefer, also indicated to Zap2it he was anticipating the pickup from HBO: "To every question I've asked of them [about being renewed], they've said, 'Yes.'"
A multiple Emmy winner for "The West Wing" and an Oscar winner for "The Social Network," Sorkin wrote all the Season 2 "Newsroom" teleplays, even taking the unusual step of backing up to revise and reshoot the earliest episodes with HBO's blessing (and financing).
Though "The Newsroom" plays around with timelines, its last round presumably will deal in part with the personal status of anchorman Will McAvoy (Daniels) and his "News Night" executive producer Mackenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer), since the characters got engaged in the final moments of Season 2.
"Emily is just a joy," Daniels told Zap2it last year, "and that makes it so much easier, We're friends, and we work hard together before the day [of filming a scene] to run those lines, so that the viewer can believe these two characters have known each other for years."
Co-stars John Gallagher Jr., Alison Pill, Dev Patel and Olivia Munn also are expected to return for "The Newsroom's" closing season. The show has also brought former "Office" showrunner Paul Lieberstein -- who certainly has experience writing a workplace romance from his days on the NBC series -- as an executive producer.
